Members say Yes

Club Members overwhelmingly voted in favor of the Club’s acquisition of a key property adjacent to Lake Naomi. The Club received 78% of the ballots sent and 94% voted in favor of purchasing the property (2305 votes in favor and 153 not in favor). The Membership has recommended many good ideas for the property. Now the Membership, Committees, Boards and Management can plan what would best benefit the Club at this location. This past week the property has been cleaned up making the corner more attractive. There is no time pressure to make any major changes; the Club will have the opportunity for due diligence to determine what will best meet the needs of the growing Membership. Currently the Board of Trustees, in concert with the Board of Governors, are assembling a task force that will consider all the proposals and report to Membership, Board of Governors and Board of Trustees. If you have an idea you would like the task force to consider you can email it to admin@lakenaomiclub.com or drop it off at the Administrative Office. Thanks again for participating in this important vote. It is very reassuring when 78% of the Membership take the time to make their voices heard. With the support of the Members, the Club has made major strides during the last four years in securing its boarders by purchasing the Mountaintop Lodge Property, the Park at Club Beach Property and most recently the corner commercial property at Routes 940 and 423.

Lake Draw Down On Tuesday, October 15th the Club will begin the 2013 draw down of Lake Naomi. This process takes place every 5-10 years in order to address both Club and Member maintenance concerns. The Club will be focusing on projects pertaining to the spillway, the dry fire hydrants, many shoreline repairs, marina improvements, permanent lake markers etc. Please be aware of the following: -Because the lake is very shallow marinas will dry up quickly. Lake access will be very limited during this time for this reason. -Most marinas will be occupied by maintenance working on time sensitive projects. Please stay clear of this work and projects in progress. -Water near the dam will be moving quickly and have a strong current over the spillway. Please use caution. If you have any questions please contact Scott Hall at shall@lakenaomiclub.com.

Watercraft Storage Alert The Water’s Edge Boat Racks, Canoe/Kayak Racks and Floating Dock rental period runs annually through Columbus Day. That means any watercraft still accessible after Columbus Day must be moved to a hitching post available at either West Beach or Tall Timber Lake. Boats on hitching posts may remain until November 15th. Any watercraft left on any boat racks after Columbus Day or on Hitching Posts after November 15th will be removed and delivered to it’s owner’s property. The service fee for watercraft removal is $100.00. No special storage arrangements will be made, this is simply an effort to get the boats off club property in a timely manner. IMPORTANT NOTE: Because 2013 is a draw down year there will be NO extensions to these dates. Boats will be promptly removed from racks as Maintenance must begin their list of projects in Marinas and beaches as soon as water recedes. PLEASE adhere to the required dates, your cooperation will benefit the overall membership in allowing Maintenance to focus on their draw down projects rather than boat removal.

Community Center Maintenance Visit the Community Center Café The Community Center is scheduled to be closed for major maintenance each year during the two weeks prior to Thanksgiving week. In 2013 the dates are Monday, November 11th through Friday, November 15th. The pool will remain closed through Friday, November 22nd. Members will be notified via the weekly email blast in the event there is a change in the dates of the Community Center close down.

The Community Center Café is open year-round and offers another option for those Members wanting something to eat without a long drive. If you’ve never taken a moment to look at the menu, why not make a point to stop in this season. As expected, the Café serves the usual burgers, chicken tenders and fries, but also has many healthier options. There is a selection of salads, wraps, sandwiches and flatbreads as well as protein smoothies to revive you after that long workout. They also look forward to offering a revolving menu this winter that will take advantage of different ingredients to keep the options interesting. Normal hours of operation are Friday and Saturday from 11:30 AM until 7:00 PM and Sundays from 11:30 AM until 4:45 PM. The Community Center Café also offers extended hours during all holiday weekends. Don’t have time to sit and eat? That’s okay. You can always order to take home or call 570-646-8585 and they will have it ready to go when you arrive.

Breast Cancer Rally Recap Once again the Lake Naomi-Timber Trails Breast Cancer Rally Committee did a fabulous job by raising over $74,000.00 for their charity, the Linda Creed Breast Cancer Organization. The foundation supports local women who are uninsured or underinsured to receive free mammograms, cancer treatment or expenses incurred during treatment. This year, the addition of the 5K Walk/Run on July 13th, brought a new dimension to the rally experience. Sarah Naughton and Sarah Van Gilder lead the event which was held at the Pinecrest Pool. Over 300 men, women and children participated on the foggy, warm morning which had a carnival-like atmosphere. The Tennis Event was well attended the following Wednesday. Wendy Valentine organized the team tennis format for the rally day with prizes contributed by the women of Team Tennis and the tennis pro Bobby McKee. Every court was filled and the women enjoyed a bright sunny day with good friends for a good cause. It was hot on the golf course Thursday, but the women played on. Bob Millard, the golf pro, did his usual great job starting the women off with score cards and a shotgun start. There were refreshments on every hole provided by the Club which was welcomed on such a scorcher. The Clubhouse that evening was filled with excitement. There was a collection of gifts for the silent auction, raffle baskets, 50/50 and items for a live auction as well. Among the guests was a survivor recipient, Linda Zelinsky, who shared with the attendees her experience with dealing with breast cancer and the financial hardships the Foundation helped her with. It put a face on all the hard work done by the army of volunteers. Funds were also raised by the Sponsor Book and the “Pink Pages” which encourages local merchants and entrepreneurs to advertise within the Lake Naomi-Timber Trails Community. We encourage Members to support those who support us and to use these merchants whenever possible. If you are interested in advertising in the “Pink Pages” please contact Eileen Chimerine at eileenpt@ aol.com or Holly Lehrer at hollylehrer@comcast.net. Going forward, the Committee is always looking for volunteers to help with the upcoming rally in 2014. New ideas are encouraged and new members are always welcomed. If you are interested in being part of this worthwhile cause and working with a dynamic group of women, please contact Laura Bacon at lbacon50@gmail.com, Nancy Mills at nancy9614@aol.com,or Debbie Lenderink at debra.lenderink@gmail.com.

Not only did you give a small donation when you walked through the door, but the artists gave 5% of the monies they made that day to the food pantry as well. All the vendors love this show, love our community and would love to return again and again. We were thrilled to present the Top of the Mountain Ecumenical Food Pantry with a check for $5,635. THANK YOU Swim Team Parents! Although the Club is very lucky to have many volunteers, a special THANK YOU is in order for the parents who volunteer to run swim team competitive meets. There is an extraordinary amount of work involved in pulling off a swim team meet. It’s not just the amenity work the coaches do like clearing the pool, setting the decks and putting in the lane lines & flags. It’s the numerous tasks that require many hands during the meet that would not be possible without our volunteer parents. Parents perform the following for each home meet: Announcer, Starter, 6 Timers, Runners, Lane Judge, Score keepers, Ribbon Writers and general organizers. That totals anywhere between 18-22 parents to volunteer at every home meet AND 15–18 are needed for some of the above at all away meets. That is a lot of people! We counted no less than 30 parents who gave their time for the team this summer. THANK YOU to you all. A special THANK YOU also goes out to Regina Lenihan and Kathy Hall for teaching the new volunteers and making sure every detail was not missed. Kathy also took tons of photos this season and presented a fantastic Slide Show at the end of season party. That show can be viewed at www.youtube.com/lakenaomiclub entitled LNC Swim Team 2013. Also thank you Shannon Kaplan for being the point person for organizing all the volunteers this year. It’s no easy task making sure we get enough people to help at each meet. LNC has the best parents, we appreciate them all!

LN Pool Special Events 2013 Pool Special Events included the annual Big Splash Party which included many different activities the entire family could enjoy like kayak races, a penny scramble, an in the pool blow up boat race and tug of war. A pie baking contest was featured and the traditional Big Splash competition ended the day with both kids and adults flipping and tricking their way to try to win the coveted trophy and title for the season. On Saturday, August 3rd Members of all ages came to the pool in cowboy hats and bandanas for Wet n Wild Western Day. A “Cowboy Grub” buffet and the “Saloon” were available for all to enjoy along with the country music, line dancing and plenty of games like barrel racing and the cow chip contest! Live ponies were just outside the pool for children to take pony rides and provide the perfect photo op for the summer. The chili cook off was a hit as was the final Horseracing of the Season. This is the only time of the summer horseracing takes actual bets as this money was collected for the LN-TT Breast Cancer Rally. This year horseracing earned over $600 for the cause. Here are a few pictures to tell the remainder of the story…

Congratulations Swim Team The team of 131 swimmers had a successful season bringing in a 4-1 record thanks to the enthusiastic coaching of Nick, Lacy, Kevin and David, and of course Head Coach Tyler Dolph. This year’s focus was on building a team, which is what the coaches strive to promote beyond improving stroke and improving times. Not only did the kids swimming progress, but all the swimmers had fun, and fun is what it’s all about! On Friday, August 2nd all swimmers were honored with a pizza party and awards ceremony. Five swimmers won special awards for their exceptional effort throughout the summer season. The Elizabeth Duer Award was given for being an allaround good sport to Lizzie LeChard. The Most Improved Female Award was given to Maggie O'Connell. The Most improved Male was received by Luke Sperling. The Sportsmanship Female Award went to Colleen Lenihan and the Sportsmanship Male was awarded to Justin Taunton. Congratulations 2013 swimmers and award recipients!

Seeking Higher Performance Most tennis players who spend time on the court, in my opinion, seek a higher level of performance each time they play. We all have different degrees of desire and motivation to improve – for some that means investing in themselves by taking individual/group lessons, seeking other instructional outlets (books, videos) – for some it means arranging more opportunities to play. Whatever your current level of performance is at this point, I encourage you to continue to strive for a higher level of performance in the three areas of tennis development – physical, mental, and emotional. Identify which area or areas you seek to improve, and commit to its development. Any addition or modification to one’s game or playing style will take time. Know that learning can occur at any level of development – whether you are a budding junior star, or a super senior. McKee Tennis will be developing additional programs for all levels of players to help each one reach that Higher Performance. One, two, three day Higher Performance programs will be offered, and we are excited about how these programs will help your overall game and experience. Look for more information throughout the year and into 2014. In the meantime, keep playing!

Tennis Tournaments 2013 As the 2013 tennis season draws to a close, we would like to recognize our Club Championship Tournament players. At the Adult level, we again used the two-flight format and had many new players join the competition. The Adult Singles Tournament was held over two weekends early in the season followed by the Adult Doubles Tournament held in its entirety the following weekend. We had numerous spectators for all rounds of play and especially great attendance for stadium court finals. Our Junior Tournament saw an increase in players and we hope to keep that trend going nextt season. Recognition and awards for all tournaments were given on Sunday, August 18th at our End of Tournament Celebration held at the Community Center pavilion. RC Laser Summer Regatta The RC Laser, Fleet #9, summer regatta was held on Saturday, August 10th at the Administrative Office Marina. Although the winds were challenging, the competition was spirited with a 12 race series and 2 throw outs for every 6 races sailed. That may sound like a lot of races but it’s what works for what are effectively 1/4 scale sail boats. Since the skippers are all located in one area on shore, the race course radius is limited to the limits of where everyone can see all the boats and course buoys. The scoring for the regatta is typical: 1 point for first, 2 points for second, etc. Then the skipper with the lowest score wins the regatta. Note that a 12 race series with two throw outs equates to a (potential) perfect score of 10 (10 firsts equals 10 points). The results by skipper were: Bill Clausen ................ 21 John Whipple .............. 23 (tie) Sue Neely ..................... 23 Russ Romano .............. 25 Dean Neely .................. 39 Congratulations to Bill (former Lightening skipper) for his great sailing. Unfortunately all of our Members were not able to make it to the regatta. RC sailing is a sport for everyone. If the boat capsizes, the skipper does not get wet rather the boat self-rights and continues sa sailing. Plus one does not need to have storage for this boat, al all of the pieces go into a bag and away you go. Finally RC sa sailing is very social because all the skippers are grouped al all together on the shore, rather than being separated on the w water. During the winter season the fleet continues to sail -- in the po pool at the Community Center. The Winter Regatta typically ha has a contingent of world class RC sailors joining the local M Members. It has come to the called ‘The Indoor World Sailin ing Championship’. For more information, contact the Fleet Captain, John W Whipple, johnhwhipple@me.com

22013 Ladies Team Tennis Results The 2013 Ladies Team Tennis competition had sixty-five regular players and nine substitute players rounding out six teams for five great weeks of play. In keeping with Lake Naomi Club’s season-long 50th Anniversary Celebration, teams were named after female tennis stars of the past! Team captains Susanna Kopchains, Naja Slipsager, Cathy Zabrowski, Jacquie Kelley, Marilynn Putriment and Joanne Kolenovic, along with Committee Member Mary Buono did a fabulous job organizing and managing their teams to a down-to-the-wire finish! Last Sailing Opportunities On Saturday, September 14th sailors came out for the last scored regatta of the season appropriately named “The Frostbite Regatta.” High winds, waves and 47 degree temps in the morning made it a less than an inviting day so only a few “die hards” made it onto the water. Sue Neely, John Whipple and Jim Kellerk made it out to race, but Jim gets bragging rights for lasting the longest! The last scheduled sailing opportunity for the season is on Saturday, October 12th when sailors will be gathering for an informal social sail to enjoy the lake’s fall beauty. No registration is necessary however an email sent to msensenig@lakenaomiclub.com would be appreciated, just so we know how many boats to expect. Start time is Noon at Club Beach near the sailing marina. Enjoy the late season sailing!

Golf tips, Etiquette, and Explanations by Bob Millard, Golf Professional Putting is undoubtedly the most crucial aspect of the game of golf. Many players neglect their short games especially putting and head straight to the range to work on the full swing. I have always believed that if you have only one hour a week to practice your golf game, you are better served practicing your short game with an emphasis on putting. Any golfer just taking up the game should spend the first couple of months practicing their short games, once a player is fairly proficient around the greens, it’s time to work on the golf swing. There are several things to keep in mind when practicing putting. The most important element of putting is working on your speed. Controlling the pace of a putt is paramount in holing more putts. A rhythmical and smooth stroke will create a motion where the players speed will be more consistent, eliminating three putts and reducing strokes on your score. Too many times the player takes the putter back the same length, regardless of the distance of the putt and speeds up accordingly. This method will lead to inconsistency and years of frustration. The proper way to putt is to lengthen your stroke for longer and uphill putts. A good rule of thumb on most putts is to keep the speed of the putter head constant. Light grip pressure is another important factor when putting; this will produce the maximum amount of feel for the player. Holding the club too tightly robs the golfer of sense of touch and makes the motion uneven. A stroke that is short and choppy will not hold up under pressure. Some other key components to a repetitive and solid putting stroke are keeping your head still and eyes over the ball. Having a stroke where the putter goes straight back and straight through, or on a slightly inside to square swing path is the proper path the putter should follow. Taking the blade outside and cutting across the ball will create side spin and make the putts go off line. With the speed of the greens getting faster and more undulating, it’s essential to use the big muscles in your chest and the arms when putting. A player should strive to have minimal hand and wrist action in their stroke. Another characteristic that all good putters share is the ability to keep their lower body still and not transfer any weight when making the putting motion. With some practice and applying these principles, you can impress your friends and hole more putts.

Golf Notes As the autumn sets in, it’s time to reflect on an eventful year. The Lake Naomi - Timber Trails Breast Cancer Rally was another successful event with an amazing $74,000 raised. My hat goes off to all the ladies who devoted so much time and energy for this great cause. Tip Golden recorded the only ace of the year, when he made a hole-inone on number 7 on May 19th with Penny Antrim, Carol Burnham and Jim Burnham witnessing the shot. Mike Zilligen successfully defended his 2012 Club Championship with another title. Mike Cunningham won again as he captured the Men’s Match Play Championship. Seekie Drysdale played some outstanding golf on the way to winning the Ladies Match Play. I would like to thank the following Golf Shop Staff for all their hard work and dedication: Ron Gray, Carole Kudlick, Larry Arfsten, Gerald Keiper, Zack Rotz, Kirk Brower, John Callichio, Bobby Rigby, Ryan Spencer, Alex Semaan and Harry Hughes. A special thanks to the interns for the 2013 season: Chris Dowling and Justin Hensley. Bob Millard PGA Golf Professional

Platform Tennis Season Platform Tennis was created to replace tennis play so greatly missed during the months of inclement weather! With cooler temperatures coming outdoor play is not over! Lake Naomi Club Members should be gearing up to play Platform Tennis at the Logan Steele Community Center. The Platform Tennis court is designed to be skid-resistant with a heating system underneath to melt the snow and ice. The court is one fourth the size of a tennis court and is enclosed by a twelve foot high taut wire screen which is an enclosure as well as play area. Yes, the Platform rules state you’re permitted to play the ball off the fencing walls which is a not only a major difference from traditional tennis it is also very fun! This sport is easy to learn and suitable for men and women of all ages and abilities. The APTA (American Platform Tennis Association) offers both Junior and Adult League and Tournament play in all populated areas including Philadelphia, New York and throughout New Jersey. Racquets and balls are available for check out at the Reception Desk. Athletic shoes are the only other item required to play, however, eye protection is highly recommended. All Members are permitted to play and there are no court fees associated with Platform Tennis. Generally speaking the courts are available for walk on play, but reservations can be made in advance by contacting the Community Center receptionist at 570-646-8585. The Reception Desk also keeps a Platform Highlights sheet as well as the Official Rules for Members who wish to use them. Additional information can be found on the APTA website at www.platformtennis.org or by contacting tennis professional, Bobby McKee who would be happy to share his knowledge with any Members who have questions about the game. He is most easily contacted at rdm@mckeetennis.com.

LNC Softball 2013 The Lake Naomi Softball Club concluded another terrific season over Labor Day Weekend. The Softball Club, which met every Sunday beginning June 30th, saw over 50 members and guests lace up their cleats, dust off their mitts and, as Springsteen said, try to recapture their Glory Days. 2013 was a particularly busy and exciting summer for the league. In addioard the league also added dozens of new entries to the tion to team jerseys and a scoreboard, already crowed and rather unique "Lake Naomi Softball Rulebook." For those interested in playing in 2014, the season will kick off Sunday June 29th at the field behind the Community Center with batting practice beginning around 10:30 and the game at 11:00. Teams are chosen on the field each week, with a mission of making that day's contest fun, competitive and of course, safe for everyone who may feel like a kid.......but isn't! Let's Play Ball For additional information about the Lake Naomi Softball Club, please email LakeNaomiSoftballClub@Yahoo.Com

Fall Tree Planting Tips From the Environmental Protection Committee With the fall season approaching, many Lake Naomi & Timber Trails home owners will be making landscaping plans. And whether you’re planning a major planting initiative or just a modest fall clean-up, the Club’s Environmental Protection Committee has a few suggestions to make regarding tree planting and maintenance. First, if you’re planning to add new trees to your property, give high priority to the use of native species, i.e., trees that naturally grow in this area. A number of local nurseries can help you select appropriate species that are compatible with your landscaping goals. Native trees typically don’t require fertilizers or insecticides to thrive; they have evolved to occupy a healthy niche in the Pocono environment, they are non-invasive, and they blend attractively into the natural environment. Ask your nursery for some recommendations. (River birch are my favorite.) To help newly planted and even established trees get enough water, use bark or chip mulch to a depth of just two to three inches up to the bbase of the tree. Don’t pile the mulch around the lowest several inches of ttrunk; that only attracts fungal and other undesirable pests. And use only “natural” mulch, not mulch that hhas been dyed; the dye releases undesirable chemicals into the soil. For trees you’re going to plant, dig yyour hole wider, rather than deeper. Native species know we have little N soil, and their roots tend to grow “out,” rather than “down.” Finally, if you have to prune your trees, avoid pruning the tops unless absolutely necessary (such as for power lines). HAPPY GARDENING!

Please Don’t Feed the Ducks Although one of the wonders of Lake Naomi and Timber Trails is living in nature, we have to report there can be down sides to this harmony… The Mallard Ducks on the beaches have become very accustomed to living among humans – mainly because our humans are feeding them. The problem with this situation is the feces that follows the feeding. PLEASE don’t contribute to them reducing our swim areas water quality! Thank you! 11

Meet Me at the Lodge Fall is in the air and October is right around the corner. Now is the perfect time for apple turnovers, pumpkin pies, spice cupcakes with maple frosting and harvest cookies. Lake Naomi Club Q & A Is it true that some of the ballots for the Commercial Property were disqualified? Yes. With every vote that the Club has taken there is always a small percentage of votes that have to be disqualified. The main disqualification is when the ballots are not placed and sealed in the separate yellow ballot envelope. The ballot is first verified by the return address label and then the envelope is opened and the yellow envelope is separated so that there is never an opportunity to identify the voting Member. The other disqualification that occurs is when a Member writes their name on the ballot. Again, the voting process is to be totally unanimous. Remember it is very important to follow the instructions so that your vote is always counted. Would the disqualified votes change the outcome? No. There were a small number of disqualified ballots. Interestingly the yes and no disqualified vote percentage were very close to the qualified vote percentage. How has the Club Membership fared with the continued economic downturn? Regular Membership as of September 7, 2013 is 1623. Last year at this time we were bragging about hitting a record number at 1606 and 2012 finished at 1612. For a similar period in 2011, the number was 1604. With the downturn in the economy, are properties still selling in Lake Naomi and Timber Trails? Yes. Through September 7, 2013 the Timber Trials and Pocono Pines Community Associations have issued 69 total resale certificates (required by Pennsylvania law in order to transfer property in a Planned Community). Eight of these are for houses in Timber Trails, fifty-six are for houses in Lake Naomi and five are for unimproved lots in Lake Naomi. These numbers are very strong when compared to other areas of Monroe County. Membership ID Card automatically transfer to my 2014 ID Card? No. The value added to your 2013 Membership ID card will NOT automatically transfer to your 2014 ID card. Therefore, we recommend that you spend any value you have on your 2013 ID card prior to getting your 2014 ID card. If a member still has value on their 2013 ID card, it can be transferred to their 2014 card but only if the card in still in their possession.
