WELCOME TO THE

Shootout Wow!

What a pesky year it’s been so far. Our lives have been drastically changed since mid-March because of a virus that has altered the course of how we go about our daily lives. Some say what we’re experiencing now is the “new norm.”

But we don’t see it that way. We have faith in the resiliency of the American spirit.

One great example of that is the 32nd annual Lake of the Ozark Shootout that will be held – fingers crossed – Aug. 29-30 at Captain Ron’s Bar and Grill in Sunrise Beach near the 34.5-mile marker.

The show must go on.

And so it will.

For more than three decades, the Shootout – which originated in 1988 headquartered at Shooter’s 21 in Osage Beach – has been a philanthropic event benefitting Lakearea rescue teams and other charitable organizations. Just last year, $357,000 was raised to benefit 32 different groups that directly or indirectly impact our daily lives at a place we’ve come to call our little Paradise of the Midwest.

The Shootout is organized and managed each year by hundreds of volunteers. Yes, that’s right, volunteers. People who step away from their businesses and daily lives to help create what is considered the largest unsanctioned boat race in the United States. Powerboat Magazine has named the event one of the nation’s eight “must-see” boating events.

We’re not surprised. It’s an event not to miss.

Even if you can’t get there by water, there are multiple locations hosting watch parties; the local media will broadcast the race; there are a plethora of race-associated events for the whole family.

Our pride in the Shootout runs deep, as you might already suspect.

RACE COURSE Spectators coming to the Shootout by water will find some changes to the no-wake zone. The normal no-wake zone runs from the 31-mile marker to the 36-mile marker from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29 and from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30. This year on Saturday, Aug. 29, the no-wake zone will be extended to the 21-mile marker from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Please observe the established no-wake zone, but on Saturday, also the extended no-wake zone. The Lake of the Ozark Shootout’s goal has always been to continue to have one of the safest events on the water and to protect not only the participants and spectators but also the local residents.

32 YEARS OF THE SHOOTOUT “It really hasn’t affected us much,” Duggan explained. “We’re still expecting a fairly large crowd.”

The major national boating races and events have cancelled due to COVID-19 fears, so Duggan said that has actually helped focus more attention on the Shootout. Sponsors who have put money into race teams still want their name recognition so some are coming to the Shootout. Some racers who haven’t been here for a few years are expected to be back.

Two popular events from recent years have been rescheduled because of the coronavirus. Duggan said the MakeA-Wish Foundation boat rides and the Treasure Hunt will be held conjunctively in May 2021.

He noted that the annual Shootout Golf Tourney, held recently, raised $15,000 with 92 golfers. “All of the sponsors have been fantastic,” Duggan said.

For 32 years now, the Shootout has been a major boat race at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Other race events have come and gone, but the Shootout has remained steadfast.

The first race was in 1988 when a group of boaters decided to establish bragging rights for their boats – who had the fastest over a one-mile course. Today, dozens of internationally known race crews descend on the Lake and tens of thousands of spectators line the racecourse to watch history being made.

The course has been shortened to three-quarters of a mile for safety reasons but that hasn’t diminished the enthusiasm, the camaraderie, the spirit of competition. And the event has been transformed into 10 days of activities to help raise funds for rescue and charitable organizations.

Last year, $357,000 was raised to support those important entities that serve the Lake.

Volunteers, the heartbeat of the race, are fewer this year. Duggan said 825 volunteers stepped up to lend a hand last year though he expects fewer this year because of coronavirus concerns. Many of the volunteers are older and may be more susceptible to COVID. “Without them, we wouldn’t have an event,” Duggan explained. “When we expanded to not just a weekend event but to 10 days of events we had to have help. Previously, it was volunteers from the fire departments and rescue crews but expanding the race left many departments under staffed.”

From an historical perspective, this year’s Shootout is especially significant because it’s being held in the shadow of COVID-19 – the coronavirus. This pandemic has changed the way we go about our daily lives, but it hasn’t thwarted the Shootout.

Organizers contacted various organizations and offered to donate some of the proceeds from the race if they would help. And they did.

Organizer Ron Duggan, owner of the host location Capt. Ron’s Bar and Grill, says COVID has had little impact on the Shootout. Yes, the number of volunteers is down and, yes, some minor adjustments have been made.

With the addition of 6 new events to complete a weeklong schedule of activities, the committee set a new record by donating $70,000.00 to 20 different charitable organizations. The goal of the new committee was to make it a week-long event instead of just a weekend. 2010 saw that happen as they added a Treasure Hunt, a Mini-Shootout, a meet and greet with the Racers during the Shootout on the Strip, Puttin’ on the Wish Rides, a fantastic Fireworks display, and an additional Concert featuring David Ball on Monday night that provided much needed food items to a local food pantry.

2011 For the first time in three years a new champion was crowned. Canadian Bill Tomlinson and Ken Kehoe driving a sleek turbine powered Mystic named “My Way” ran 8 times and tied the course record of 208 mph on three different runs. A record of over 100,000 fans witnessed the record setting week as $70,570.00 was donated to 20 different organizations. Another record of 493 Volunteers donated 5727 hours to make this event the largest community event of its kind.

In the 5 years since the event was moved to Captain Ron’s, the Shootout organization has donated over $322,000.00 to Lake Area Charities and continues to grow each and every year.

short of amazing. Events all week were packed. The Street Party which now became known as the Shootout in the Park was a tremendous success with over 8,000 people eating, drinking and conversing with all the race teams at the Laurie City Park. The new Shootout Hall of Fame had 10 new inductees from all aspects of the 25 years of the Shootout.

There were very few dry eyes when Sue Morgan unveiled the new Bob Morgan Memorial/Shootout Hall of Fame at Captain Ron’s, complete with a flyover in the missing man formation as America the Beautiful was sung. The Racing was nothing short of spectacular as racers set new Shootout records including Joe Sgro’s 152-mph as top V, Dan O’Keefe’s 95 mph as top PWC, and Brad Rowland amazing 114 mph as top Pontoon. It was only fitting that on Sunday morning, the second run of the day, set a blistering new Shootout record of 224 mph by Bill Tomlinson and Ken Kehoe in My Way. And as great as all of that was, the Shootout Committee set an unprecedented amount of giving for the Shootout by handing out $115,000.00 in checks to 22 different Charities and Fire Departments.

The Shootout is alive and well and looking forward to the 26th year in August of 2014.

From the lowest of lows to the highest of highs. The Spirit of Qatar absolutely smashed the old record that My Way had set just one year prior, but it wasn’t without a little drama of its own. On its first run, a third of the way down the course, the parachutes deployed and caused a little tension with its crew, but they safely guided the Mystic down the remainder of the course and established a new second highest speed at 210 mph.

Later on that day, the Spirit of Qatar blew away the field and all records by making an unbelievable run of 244 mph. With twice the horsepower of My Way, it was a run that was anticipated, but seeing it was amazing! In between runs, however, was the lowest point of the 26-year history of the Shootout when Joel Begin’s boat, throttled by Mike Fiore, flipped end over end at the finish line. Rescue crews did a tremendous job of securing the scene and getting both men to the hospital. It was reported later in the day and again on Sunday, that Joel was able to walk away from the hospital the next day and that Mike would fully recover. On Tuesday after the Shootout, a day after hip surgery, Mike Fiore passed away and the entire Shootout family mourned his tragic death. The Shootout family and friends will always remember Mike and his contributions not only to the Shootout, but for his value and dedication to all of powerboating.

With Performance Boat Center coming on board as the title sponsor and a record set for donations at the Auction, the Shootout committee donated an incredible $175,000 to 31 different organizations and charities. After 8 years at Captain Ron’s, the Committee has donated $747,747.00 back to the com-

munity. Top Gun accolades went to the Don Onken family as the newly sponsored American Ethanol Mystic powered its way to a piston powered record tying performance of 208 miles per hour. Mystic owner John Cosker and performance boat guru Myrick Coil set the standard for 2015 and made the entire Onken family beam with excitement. The weather was perfect and crowds were amazing and any thoughts of a down year, were immediately squashed. The Shootout is alive and well!!

the 28th overall year of the Shootout, it just seems amazing that the records continue to fall for this event. American Ethanol, owned by Don Onken and his family repeated as Top Gun, by setting a record for a piston powered boat at an amazing speed of 217 mph. Piloted by Slug Hefner and John Cosker, this Mystic excited the crowd of almost 70,000 people on Shootout Saturday. Along with many other records, a new standard for the amount raised for the charities was established as the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Committee donated $195,243.00 to 34 different organizations, fire departments and charities. In the 9 years this event has been at Captain Ron’s, an amazing $943,000.00 has been donated back to charity.

2017 Note: The 28-year history of the Shootout 1-mile course is in the books, and beginning in 2017, all new records will begin with a ¾ mile course. Be the first to set a new record at each classification and be a part of the 10th anniversary at Captain Ron’s as we surpass the $1 million mark of donations.

After a rough start last year, Don Onken’s American Ethanol was the fastest boat to run the course of the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, taking home it’s fifth win in as many years.

Driver Tony Battiato and throttleman John Cosker took the honors hitting a speed of 201 mph in the 50-foot Mystic catamaran. Cosker has been with the race team for each of their five wins. In 2018, Cosker and Battito took Top Gun honors with a run of 204 mph.

Diana Dorhauer

Diana Dohauer has become a familiar face among volunteers for the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. Her ties to the event go back to the days when the annual race was held at Shooter’s 21 in Osage Beach. More than 20 years later, with her name displayed in the Bob Morgan Shootout Hall of Fame, Dorhauer says she continues to look forward to the excitement and camaraderie in 2020 as she did years ago when she first got involved.

Shootout isn’t just about races for Dorhauer, it’s about being a part of something bigger, something that pays it forward and gives back to the community. That’s what keeps her coming back every year, welcoming the racers and helping raise tens of thousands of dollars every year.

“Being a part of such an incredible event that gives back to our community is amazing. Being able to donate back into our local charities and knowing they benefit from everyone’s hard work makes it so worthwhile,” Dorhauer said. “The race has a great history of being unique which brings racers from all of the world. We’ve also had a pretty great core group from day one. It has evolved throughout the years, but having that and having a great history of giving is why I think it’s been so successful.”

Although Dorhauer seems to have found her niche handling registration, when she first began volunteering she was often working on the water-side of the race. Doing inspections on the boats. She also helped with the on-site plaque engraving.

Dorhauer’s husband is who first got her involved. The Shootout has always benefitted local fire districts. As the former chief of the Osage Beach Fire Protection District, Jeff also has a long history of being involved with the Shootout.

Despite having been involved for over two decades, Dorhauer said she never loses her enthusiasm and always looks forward to that last week in August every summer when the hours of preplanning come to an end and it’s time for the races.

“It’s always fun seeing the people I’ve met through the years from all over the country. Our registration team has been together for several years as well, it’s always fun to come together and be a part of the Shootout year after year.

It’s never dull for Dorhauer. Watching the racers arrive, meeting up with friends who come back year after year and watching some of the fastest boats in the country is always exciting and, in the end when the list of charities with their donations is done, it is well worth the investment of time. It feels good to be involved with something that has given over $2 millions back to the community she said.

It may be her personality that makes Dorhauer so well-suited for her Shootout responsibilities. She is quick with a smile and to strike up a conversation. She enjoys being around people and it shows not only in her work with the Shootout but in her business as well. She is definitely a people person. She runs a salon in her home and always looks forward to working with her clients.

Dorhauer also works at HyVee in Osage Beach.

Even though she has a busy schedule, she and her husband still manage to find quality time together, often heading out on Sunday afternoons when the lake quiets down, meeting up with friends or traveling to Michigan to visit their two children.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES WILL BE HONORED AUGUST 25, 2020 They come from all types of backgrounds, racers, broadcasters, volunteers -- all with a common goal of making the annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout a success for race teams, spectators and the charities who benefit from the hundreds of man hours it takes to put an event of this magnitude together and each year, a handful of those die-hard supporters are honored as inductees into the Shootout’s Bob Morgan Hall of Fame.

Named in honor of racing legend Bob Morgan, the Hall of Fame is an honor to those who are chosen by the Shootout Committee.

WENT FOR A FOUR-PEAT AT 2019 SHOOTOUT

Last year when Steve Lee threw a leg over “Lets Dance” and started down the course at Lake of the Ozarks 31st Annual Shootout, he was attempting to reach the rarified atmosphere of holding the Top Gun Award in his PWC Modified Open Class for the fourth year in a row. Steve currently holds the race record with his 2017 run at 83 mph. But he says he can go even faster.

He might not have hit 83 mph but he did take home the trophy in his PWC5 class.

His 2014 Yamaha Wave Runner started life at 260 HP but with Steve’s modifications, it currently develops about 425 HP. In the Modified Open Class, the only limiting factor on technical improvement is the budget, and Steve says there are still some tech upgrades to explore. In fact, he’s confident he can break the 100 mph barrier.

Lee chose Yamaha because of the large displacement engine other brands do not provide. He says the Yamaha has a great reputation for reliability also. That is not only important when competing, but great for an everyday PWC on the lake since “Lets Dance” is the daily fun ride for Steve.

At 57 years of age, Lee’s competitive spirit found him racing in closed-course PWC races. These are like dirt bike Moto-Cross races but on water with wave runners. It was a short leap to straight line racing against the clock in the Shootout.

It was also a natural leap since Steve was a full-time resident at Lake of the Ozarks until a few years back when he moved into the full-time RV life on the road.

Lee may return to the Shootout this year to defend his title, and for those who ply the lake on PWCs for fun, they might find themselves sprinting along beside the fastest wave runner in the world and not even know it.

Pack headphones or earbuds to shut out other tunes while enjoying your own, or settle in and learn to love something new.

Start the day with cell phones, tablets, and sound systems fully charged. Also pack chargers to keep these electronics running.

Load movies and music onto phones and tablets. Little kids can tire and may need to chill with a movie.

•

Modeling dough that sticks to itself, not electronics, clothing, or boat surfaces will help the littlest ones stay busy.

Wear sun protective clothing such as rash guard shirts over sunscreen, or use clothing with an ultraviolent protection factor (UPF), especially on those who may burn easily.

Throw in a UPF hat with a wide brim to protect exposed ears, noses, and necks.

•

Toss some zinc oxide and aloe in the bag to treat any place that becomes red or tender before the day’s end.

•

Add some ginger or peppermint chews to settle tummies stressed by a full day on the water.

STAY HYDRATED TO STAY COOL Swimming or paddling depletes our body’s resources faster. So does sun exposure. Shootout rafters should: •

Hydrate well the day before.

•

Be sure to drink water every hour spent on the boat or in the water. Because consuming alcohol affects a person’s ability to absorb and retain water needed for hydration, drinkers need to consume water as often as nondrinkers.

•

Put some sparkling, fruit-infused waters on ice to help kids avoid sugary sodas that don’t hydrate.

EASY MEALS ON THE WATER Swimming and paddling also deplete the body’s energy so food on board is essential.

•

Fruits and vegetables, dried and fresh, will help hydrate and provide a boost of energy while filling tummies.

•

Sealed packages of tuna or salmon can be tossed in a beach bag for a protein kick.

•

Crackers, marshmallows, or pretzels dredged in peanut butter will keep kids full and strong.

USE BEST PRACTICES Whether boating to and from the Shootout or rafting up through it, remember best practices.

•

Children under 7 MUST wear a life jacket at all times when near or on the water, but a life jacket is a good idea for all.

•

Sobriety leads to good decisions. Designate a sober captain to watch over the boat and deliver everyone home safely.

•

Be a good neighbor. People will use rafted boats as stepping stones to move across the water. Smile and throw down a towel for puddles.

•

Account for all things in the water at day’s end. Those things include loose bow and stern ropes that can wrap around and stall propellers. Other things in the water could be people, floats, and debris. Be a good citizen and pick up trash for the good of all, then abide by the no-wake rules as you relax for the ride home.

THE VIEW FROM THE COCKPIT MAY CHANGE But the Need for Speed Never Leaves

Roger Leas spent years looking out of the cockpit of drag racing boats in races all over the country, but he secretly wanted to explore scale models controlled by radio signal. On a weekend in 2007 with some buddies, Roger had a chance to play with a radio controlled (RC) truck, and he was hooked. Even though Roger ended his entry into drag boat competitions in 2004, his heart was still in fast boats so it was natural that he chose a boat for his first RC purchase.

Living at Lake of the Ozarks, Roger found several guys who played with serious RC model boats. Their regular meeting place was Osage Beach City Park, so he was poised for success when the Mini shootout event began in 2009. Roger’s interest in fast scale model boats coincided with the beginning of the Mini Shootout.

He has been involved in the race every year since the first one in 2009.

Roger currently holds the world record at 95mph for RC boats in the Catamaran class with gasoline power. RC boat classes are divided by propulsion either by gasoline or electric and by hull design as V-hull or Catamaran. According to Roger, electrics can attain more speed because they are capable of much higher RPM than traditional gasoline engines, but Roger finds gasoline-powered boats more satisfying to run because of its technical challenges.

The only other competition Roger participates in are the RC time trials in Huntsville, Alabama every year.

That event, like the Shootout, is strictly a set course where the boats run in a straight line for fastest possible speed.

In addition, like the big boats racing in the Shootout, the RC mini boat performance depends on water conditions. A four-inch wave plays havoc with a 3-foot long boat.

Lightweight RC boats need glass smooth water for best performance.

Roger says there are some technical issues where a driver can affect performance. The propeller is one. Roger buys raw, unfinished props and fine-tunes them to fit his boat and the conditions. In fact, Roger hand assembles his boats from components, starting with a basic hull from Areomarine Hobbies.

Roger’s enthusiasm is infectious. He’s brought others into the RC boat racing world. His wife is a regular competitor as are several of his friends. The reason may be Roger’s collegial nature. He puts the event and fellow competitors in the spotlight ahead of himself. In the truest spirit of competition and good sportsmanship, Roger Leas puts the event, which raises money for charitable causes, and his fellow competitors, who want to hold a speed record, first when talking about the Mini Shootout.

The Mini Shootout is a three-day event held at Ha Ha Tonka Spring August 16, 17and 18 this year. It begins with a meet-andgreet on Friday night, a great event in its own right, said Roger.

This year it will be held at Bridal Cave, August 16, starting at 5 PM. There will be live music, food trucks and a chance to meet and talk to drivers who will have their boats on display.

Although the Mini Shootout is a fun way for all RC boat owners to show off their boats and their driving skills, those competing for Top Gun awards, the fastest boats in each class, will be running last each day. On Saturday at 4 PM and on Sunday at 3 PM, spectators will witness a model boat three feet long skimming across the water at dizzying speeds, running faster than most big boats can attain.

That’s where Roger hopes to be. The need for speed never leaves Roger Leas.
