MEET THE LOCALS

W

e all have our favorite local hangouts — the ones you go to because the bartender knows your name and the waitress knows what you want without having to ask. You know what to expect and you won’t be disappointed. But with hundreds of restaurants and bars around the Lake area, it’s good to divert from the usual and try somewhere new. I tagged along for a few interviews and photo shoots at several different restaurants for our feature story on local diners. Most I had been to before but not for quite some time. Each place comes highly recommended and are known local hotspots. When I lived in Eldon for a couple of years I would occasionally walk to Whittle’s for a bite to eat and to play a game of darts. The food is impressive — my dart score is not. One of the things cpatires@lakemediaonline.com I like the most is that every month they roll out a specially-themed menu that in the past has been everything from Asian to a unique selection of burgers. The chef clearly puts a lot of thought into it. It gives you the chance to try something new and keeps regulars happy by mixing it up. Just down the road from Whittles are two drive-ins we feature in this issue as well. Both have chili cheese dogs that people travel from all over the Lake area (and beyond) to order. I personally like the loaded tater tots but because these are also topped with chili, I usually get one or the other. As you can see, I don’t always follow a well-rounded diet. Thankfully I’ve moved to the Lake and away from such guilty pleasures but have found a few more local hangouts to enjoy. As we transition to another season here at the Lake, like most people I’m moving away from waterfront establishments to more roadside locations. We hope to find you enjoying some of our featured “dives” and if you see me out and about throwing darts, feel free to give me a few pointers.

Boat owners restore vintage boats, bringing them back on the water at Lake of the Ozarks

W

hen Robert Pollack and his son-in-law Jim Mader purchased the “oldest cruiser on the Lake,” they thought they made the deal of a lifetime. After looking at the 1935 25’ Richardson located in Gravois Mills, the two agreed it only needed a few months of work and would be out in the water by Spring. Four years and 6,000 hours of labor later, it was once again sailing on Lake of the Ozarks. From stem to stern, the restoration was a complete overhaul. Armed with a stack of Wooden Boat magazines, their primary resource

for information in the 1980s, the two embarked on an adventure to restore the Richardson back to its glory days. The boat was moved to Jim’s backyard in Stillwell, Kansas where they’d spend many weekends working on the project. In 1982 it was successfully launched on Lake of the Ozarks.

Restoration team After the restoration of the Richardson was complete, Bob McQuain became Jim’s brother-in-law. They shared a mutual interest, and from that point on, they were a two-man boat restoration team. When Bob was young he remembers building a wooden boat with his Dad, establishing an appreciation for the

antiques. In the mid-80s he purchased a 1959 Chris Craft that had sunk on Lake of the Ozarks. It was his first restoration project. Ten years later, with additional knowledge and the help of Jim, they had to restore the boat again but were more confident in their skills after traveling to many boat shows together and taking instructional classes across the country to improve their knowledge and technique. Bob says they both own “plastic boats,” but explains that a sign in their workshop reads “If God wanted us to have plastic boats, he would have made plastic trees.” “We both know the art of wooden boats is being lost,” Bob says. “We are proud to keep it going.”

LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

13

The second restoration of the Richardson started about 10 years ago when they replaced all of the white oak frames. Rebuilding the frame was tedious. Jim says the construction type has been used to make boats for thousands of years. “It is truly a pleasure to sustain an old trade,” Jim said. They had to build their own steam box where the oak is placed inside for about five hours before it can be removed, bent into shape and secured in 15 minutes. The bottom planking was redone, the top was recovered and the engine was rebuilt but maintains its original power traveling about 8 miles per hour. The family now owns several other antique boats: a 1962 28’ Chris Craft Constellation, 1959 17’ Chris Craft Ski, 1952 20’ Chris Craft Riviera, and a 1926 26’ Indian Lake Dart. The Dart is currently being restored while the Riviera is waiting on restoration. The 1959 Chris Craft Ski gets the most use pulling grandchildren from behind on tubes, skis and knee boards. It stays inside the Gravois Arm only to venture out in the morning before the Lake gets too choppy. Out on the water in one of their restorations, they’ll get many thumbs up and while docked their most frequently asked question is about maintenance. Since most of the fleet is over 50 years old, it takes 10-12 coats of varnish to keep it in glossy condition every five years but Bob points out most fiberglass boats need a good buffing every five years, too.

A look at the restoration process of the Richardson. A local television crew came out to document the journey before it was launched into the Lake in 1982. PROVIDED PHOTOS

This 1935 25’ Richardson is likely the oldest cruiser in use on Lake of the Ozarks. It was originally brought to the Lake after it was purchased by Union Electric to tour dignitaries when the Lake was being filled. It’s been on the Lake all its life. The only original wood on the boat is the cabin roof, the bulk head and one half of the keel. Everything else was replaced during one of two restorations that took place over the years.

LAKE LIFESTYLES // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

The boat was acquired in 1978 after Jim Mader’s family shared cocktails with the boat’s owner at a waterfront restaurant on the Gravois Arm. Mrs. Wilke Dye, the most recent owner, said it needed a lot of work after her husband passed, and she was concerned that no one would be interested. After looking at the boat the next day, Jim’s family became the proud owners and the Richardson was taken back to their home in Stillwell, Kan., where Jim says they began a “huge learning process.” They kept their promise to Mrs. Dye that they’d maintain the family name and called the boat “Do or Dye.”

1957 Chris Craft 26’ Sea Skiff Growing up in Massachusetts, Steve Bradbury was always around wooden boats. In 2012, Steve and his wife, Elizabeth, were spending the summer in Empire, Michigan when they met Frank Hagerty who was well-known for his love of old cars, boats and motorcycles. That same year, they decided to purchase a classic boat of their own. They found a 1957 15’ Lyman Outboard Runabout with a 35 HP Johnson Golden Javelin motor. As far as they can tell it is the original package (boat, motor and trailer), as delivered in Boyne City, Mich. in 1957. The boat is called Wood Duck I, and is often seen towed behind the couple’s 1957 Lincoln Coup when they take it on the road to shows. In 2016 they decided to spend more time at Lake of the Ozarks and realized the 15’ Lyman was a bit too small for a summer of boating. They began to search for something bigger and located a Chris

Craft Sea Skiff through a dealer out of Clayton, New York. Sea Skiff boats have a reputation for good handing and performance in rough water so they bought OLD JER that same summer. OLD JER was taken to Ball Boat Works in Maple City, Mich. where structural repairs and cosmetic work was done until April 2017 when it finally made its way to the Lake.

“We stopped short of a full restoration since we consider the boat a ‘daily driver,’ as a car enthusiasts would say,” Steve said. The boat was renamed Wood Duck II. It is powered by a Chris Craft Model M engine, a 6 cylinder flat-head rated at 130 HP (often called a Hercules engine). “We enjoy the boat. As reputed, it performs well in rough Lake of the Ozarks summer conditions,” Steve says.

CLASSIC BOATS LOTO Vintage boat enthusiasts won’t have trouble finding other boat owners who love to share their stories of restoration fails and successes. Classic Boats LOTO is an informal group of vintage boat owners, meeting a couple times during the season to have cruises and raft ups. Their goal is to keep the connection and enthusiasm of classic boats alive — all while having a little fun. Most are also members of The Antique and Classic Boat Society (a national group) and are part of the regional chapter Heartland Classics. And it always brings admiring comments from people who stop to learn more about it.” The boat is stored and serviced at Redhead’s Performance Marine where Steve says it’s probably the slowest boat there and they’re proud of it… Wood Duck I has never been on Lake of the Ozarks, but Steve says it might be introduced this fall.

1964 25’ Lyman Hardtop Mark Engstrom became interested in vintage boats about 15 years ago when he met someone who restored several of them. His first purchase was at an estate sale — a 1959 Alumicraft. After enjoying the boat for awhile, he sold it to a man from Texas who grew up skiing behind the exact same type of boat. This summer, Mark found a 1964 25’ Lyman on Lake Erie and loved the way it managed the large waves on the Great Lakes. He was familiar with how a Lyman handles since his good friend and fellow 20

LAKE LIFESTYLES // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

Lake of the Ozarks boater, Skip Langell, also owns one. Skip’s has a convertible top, but Mark was looking for a hardtop. This boat was already in great shape and only needed minor work to get in the water. The Lyman now sits docked at his home at the 10.5 mile marker. “What I love most is gathering with others who share the same interest,” he said. “Whether it be wooden, fiberglass or aluminum, they all offer their own style and classic looks. I purchased two of my old boats for less than $800 and put minimal expense, but lots of love labor, into them.” These same boats may sit next to something shinier and more expensive at boat shows, but they still get plenty of attention. Mark has a 1958 Star Craft Jet Star with a 50 HP Evinrude Fat Fifty engine, and a 1964 Lyman Hardtop Sleeper with a 327 Gray Marine engine. Both are kept at Lake of the Ozarks. His 1960 finned aluminum boat “Texas Maid” is currently waiting to be restored.

Mark also owns a 1958 Starcraft speedboat made of aluminum with fins — thus the name Tin Fin. PROVIDED PHOTO

Golf Q&A

Ask the

Expert BY PAUL LEAHY

I tend to leave the majority of my putts short, and if I do get one to the hole it goes way past. How can I improve my lag putting? George T., Lake Ozark I talk to my students about pace a lot and how important the pace of your putt is especially on longer ones. I believe pace is more important than the line for any putt over about 20 feet. If you are changing the pace of your stroke from putt to putt it is very difficult to control the distance. First look at your grip pressure and make sure you are holding the putter lightly as you need feel and touch to be a great putter. The goal is to hit each putt with the same tempo, and more importantly, the correct tempo. A good way to check your tempo is to count to yourself “one, two, three, four,” taking your putter back on three and swinging through on four. Watch your grip pressure and work on the pace of your stroke, and you will begin to control distances much better.

What advice would you give a senior golfer to help them enjoy the game more? Jim P., Montreal As we age we lose distance, club head speed and the ability to elevate the ball like we once did. The first thing I would do is take an honest assessment of your game and know when to move up to a different tee. A lot of times it’s a pride thing but if you find yourself hitting woods into greens or not able to reach some holes in regulation, the game will become frustrating. We all would like to hit it as far and play the game the way we know we once could, but life happens. Move up a tee and enjoy hitting scoring clubs into the greens again and making some birdies. Another key element is to keep your body in golf shape. When we were younger we were more active and more flexible. Most of us will never be as flexible as we were in our 20s but doing some stretches or yoga a few times a week will keep you in golf shape and enjoying the game for years to come.

I’ve heard about the PGA Junior League on the golf television broadcasts. Is the program offered here at the Lake and how do I get my grandchildren involved? Grace R., Osage Beach The PGA Junior League is offered in the Lake area at the Eldon Golf Club and at Lake Valley Country Club. PGA Junior League is a flagship program of the PGA of America and most teams play between March 1 to July 31. The program is for boys and girls 13 and under. They compete in a team format versus individual competition similar to a youth baseball or soccer team play. Some programs have expanded to include youth 17 and younger in certain locations. The program focuses on fun, recreation, good health and sportsmanship. For additional information, visit www.pgajrleague. com or contact Eldon Golf Club or Lake Valley Country Club. GOLDEN YEARS GOLF Hitting the green after 60 and beyond BY PAUL LEAHY

LAKE LIFESTYLES // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

L

ake of the Ozarks continues to be a great place for retirement and golfers from around the Midwest have begun to take notice. The Lake has been a popular place to vacation for years and the kids who vacationed here with their parents are now retiring to the Lake. The Lake has everything a golfer would need in retirement; plenty of affordable golf options, a great cost of living, healthcare, all four seasons, a variety of housing options and the No. 1 recreational Lake in the country! The majority of our golfing members at The Oaks at Margaritaville are reaching retirement age or are already there. Talking with many of them they echoed a common theme about why they chose the Lake of the Ozarks to retire. The vast majority of them have been coming here since the 70’s and 80’s. Coming with their parents, and then bringing their own children to experience this special place. Iowa, Illinois, Kansas and Missouri seem to be the most popular spots of those relocating to the Lake for retirement. Close enough to get back to family or friends but far enough south to get out of the winter chill. Another common theme is the affordability and variety of the courses in the area. Retiring to other popular destinations such as Arizona or Florida will bring warmer temperatures in the winter months but it will also come with a higher price tag. Golf memberships at the Lake are considerably less expensive than those you typically find in major metropolitan areas or in popular southern or western retirement communities. The weather at the Lake can be challenging at times, but all in all we have nine months of pretty good golfing weather and most avid golfers will play 12 months a year. Another common thread, as I spoke with our members, was the friendly staffs and residents of the Lake. Midwestern hospitality is a key element in the lifestyle here at the Lake as visitors and full-timers enjoy the welcoming feeling they get when dining or shopping, and especially at local golf courses. These gentlemen also mentioned the friends at the Lake. These guys play between 100 and 150 rounds of golf together each year and that is what golf and especially retirement golf is all about. Spending the day doing something you love with great friends.

A group of members from The Oaks at Margaritaville Lake Resort. They play between 100 to 150 rounds of golf together each year. PHOTO PROVIDED

They all also mentioned the small-town feel of the Lake but there are still plenty of activities to fill your spare time. Fishing and other aquatic activities are a big part of Lake life. Most retirees to the Lake enjoy the water, recreational opportunities and beautiful views that it provides on a year-round basis. The most important factor for retirees that love the game of golf are the golf courses themselves. The Lake has a multitude of options to choose from and all are very reasonably priced depending on the time of year. Retirees have many options to play competitively as well, with all the courses offering various forms of league play and tournaments. Several traveling leagues play all the golf courses, and a charity tournament or other forms of open-to-thepublic events can be found almost every week between March and October. All the courses are within 30 minutes of one another and traffic to get to these venues is considerably lighter than battling Naples or other similar areas in their peak seasons. We all want to retire and be in a place where we can enjoy the fruits of our labor. The Lake has everything one might need to be happy and fulfilled. Start making plans today so when the time comes you are ready to enjoy the rest of your life. Do your research and find that perfect retirement spot, and kick back and enjoy the great game of golf, your friends and family, and everything the Lake has to offer!

Casino trips and excursions close to the Lake BY CHARIS PATIRES

Once or twice a year, Karen Calvert hops on a bus and heads to Downstream Casino to play the penny slots. Taking along a friend, Calvert and a bus load of her fellow Elks Lodge members, will stay overnight for a quick getaway to enjoy everything the casino and resort has to offer. Organized by Karen Iverson, of the Osage Beach Elks Lodge, the trips normally take place in the spring and fall, and anyone from the public can tag along. For about $95 a person each participant gets the ride, overnight accommodations, $20 of game play, and a dinner buffet upon arrival. Calvert says Iverson makes the trip fun by having games (with cash prizes), snacks and drinks ready to go for the bus ride down. It makes the 3-hour long trip more enjoyable, she says. Iverson is planning the next trip in October. The bus holds about 50 people and usually fills up fast. More information is posted on Elks Lodge #2517 on Facebook.

TRIPADVISOR

HERE’S A LOOK AT A FEW OF THE TOP CASINOS WITHIN DRIVING DISTANCE: DOWNSTREAM CASINO Located on the Missouri/Oklahoma/Kansas borders, Downstream Casino offers a full casino, lodging, entertainment and shows, golf and a spa. Every Tuesday Downstream Casino has a bus that picks up Lake area passengers for a one-day trip to the casino. Pickup is at 7:45 a.m. at the WalMart in Camdenton. You’ll have all day to play before departing the casino at 6:15 p.m. to come back home. They also have other routes with pick-up locations in Butler, Nevada, Lamar, Lebanon, Warsaw, Springfield and Branson. The ride is free, and you’ll receive $10 to play and a free lunch buffet. First-come, first-served. No reservations needed. Once there, and if you get tired of gambling, you can take a shuttle to the Eagle Creek Golf Club to play a round at this 18-hole championship course (although that might be more than you can pack into one day). Mickey Mantel’s childhood home is also in the area. Or stay at the casino and relax at the spa with a massage, facial, manicure or any of the other treatments offered so you can leave feeling rested.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE Ever stood in three states at once? There are a few tri-state markers across America and one is located right next to Downstream Casino. On your way to the casino, look for the marker, and make a quick stop for a picture. You’ll be standing on the borders of Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE The only remaining Spanish Mission style depot left on the MKT Railroad, the Katy Depot is a must-see. It’s been fully restored and the trail head for the Katy Trail is located there, too. Home to the chamber of commerce, stop in and pick up a copy of the self-guided walking trail guide. There are more than 400 sites on the National Registry of Historic Places in Boonville so a walking tour would be a great way to spend the afternoon.

ISLE OF CAPRI Just an hour-and-a-half from the Lake, Isle of Capri is another casino and hotel that has it all. There are three on-site restaurants, plenty of rooms for staying the night, a 24-hour fitness center, and entertainment. Test your luck at any of the 20 game tables and the 900 slot and video poker machines. The casino is located near the downtown area of Boonville where there is a lot to see and do, so even though it is close to the Lake, we recommend making it an overnight trip. It’s right off of the Katy Trail (bike rentals are available), and there are lots of boutique stores for a unique shopping experience. Car buffs can schedule a tour of the Lewis Miller’s Mitchell Collection museum, home to the most extensive exhibit of its kind. AL GRIFFIN

HARD ROCK HOTEL It’s as close to Vegas as you can get. Escape to Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Tulsa, Okla. There are over 450 rooms and suites at this casino with state-of-theart amenities. The casino has more than 2,600 electronic games, a poker room and table games spread out along the casino floor. The Spa at Hard Rock is open daily featuring a wide range of services. Even the pool is open until 12 a.m. While in Tulsa, there’s plenty to do. Concerts, performing arts, parks, shopping … plan your trip to coincide with a special event or find something you are interested in seeing. The world’s largest collection of art and artifacts from the West is found at the Gilcrease Museum. The Tulsa Zoo and Living Museum is also a big hit with visitors. The Gathering Place is a new, interactive riverfront park that is free. There are more than 100 unique experiences and it has been called a one-of-kind place to visit.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE The Philbrook Museum of Art was a private home built in the 1920s. There are fine dining options, casual dining and places to get a quick bite to eat. The Buffet is a favorite where you’ll get to sample cuisines from all over the world. There’s still plenty of entertainment found off the casino floor with an 18-screen movie theater and arcades. The Star Pavilion has a lineup of entertainment and is equally impressive. In September, comedian Bob Saget, and musicians Queensrÿche and Air Supply will perform. In October Gladys Knight and Montgomery Gentry are scheduled to make an appearance. Adults can check the kids into Kids Quest where they will experience all kinds of activities while they get away to enjoy small batch craft beers, take in a show for the night and check out the craps table.

rent Solomon recalls the night his father, Al, bought Chevy’s. Al ran up a huge tab. The dollar amount caused him to holler, “What’ll it take to buy the place?” The answer was just right, and Al purchased it on the spot. Today, Brent and his daughter Sloane carry on Al’s tradition with Al’s special wings and pizza just off Jeffries Road along Osage Beach Parkway (West). It’s in the corner of an L-shaped strip mall, home to Chevy’s Bar & Grill and Pizzeria. Outside is a motorized bike for deliveries to Margaritaville and places nearby. On the sidewalk is a new bench seat, the back made from a Chevrolet pickup truck tailgate. Inside is a cozy bar where people gather for pizza, wings, beer, burgers and

sandwiches. A meaty pizza from Chevy’s includes house-made Canadian bacon or Italian sausage — and plenty of it. Chevy’s doesn’t skimp on toppings. The pizzas are rich in ingredients and taste. Solomon takes special pride in Al’s wings. They’re brined in a house-made pickle juice, rinsed and rolled in Panko breadcrumbs, fried crisp, then dusted with Cajun seasoning before serving.

Even without sauce, they deliver a bite that pleases. Monday nights at 7 p.m. are Xtreme Bar Bingo nights at Chevy’s with great prizes given weekly. On Friday and Saturday nights, there’s live music playing. Around the perimeter of the room are games and a well-lit pool table. MARSHMALLOW PEPSI RIVALRY IN ELDON CREE-MEE DRIVE-IN

S

ince 1952 — yes, almost 70 years — the Cree-Mee Drive-In has been the go-to place for a classic diner meal, particularly to order a foot-long chili cheese dog and fries. Even on a recent Monday afternoon Cree-Mee was doing brisk business. One woman said she loves ice cream, but can’t buy it by the half-gallon and take it home because she’d eat it all too often. She stops by Cree-Mee and orders a “baby” cone — a soft-serve twist in vanilla and chocolate that was still at least 6 inches above the top edge of a sugar cone. She said this satisfies her love for ice cream until the next time temptation overtakes her. A young couple — 20-somethings, most likely — stood waiting for a large chocolate shake. He said he’s a Cree-Mee shake fan because of the size as well as the flavor. The styrofoam take-out cup is a little bit wider, a little bit taller, and a little bit less expensive, in his opinion. He’s been eating and sipping at Cree-Mee since he was a kid so he’s an experienced consumer. Another couple, of retirement age, lives near Jefferson City. They used to stop at Cree-Mee when they rode motorcycles, but on this day they drove by car just to

32

LAKE LIFESTYLES // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

taste the flavors from decades gone by. They ordered the advertised and popular chili cheese dog with a side of fries, then washed it down with a cone. They smiled, satisfied, and said, “Just the same.” Three different customers carried out bags of chili cheese dogs for their own tables or for a breakroom meeting at work. They declared the burgers are just as good, but that foot-long dog appears to be a best-seller and an Eldon favorite. The Marshmallow Pepsi is made with marshmallow cream and soda pop. It foams and fizzes, is served over ice, and it’s neither too sweet nor too creamy. It’s a smooth blend, and is the one recommended when asking, “What’s Cree-Mee’s best-selling drink?” The old-fashioned banana split is just as tempting, however. It’s three tall mounds of soft-serve with the customer’s choice in toppings, including raspberry or strawberry, chocolate or hot fudge, and pineapple or butter pecan. Lonnie Albertson bought Cree-Mee in 1977, and since then, the restaurant has been a family business. Jodi Gregoire, Lonnie’s daughter, was born the same year, and today, she still works the window and kitchen. Jodi’s sister works in the back of the house; she keeps the books. Through the years, Lonnie’s parents, siblings, and grandchildren have all

learned to work and support the family business at Cree-Mee. Jodi is quick to add that employees not related by blood or marriage are still family. In fact, people refer to Jodi’s extended family as her “Cree-Mee grandbabies.” She attends showers, weddings, and farewells. She’s there for all of them as they are for her. Perhaps that’s why customers sing praises for Cree-Mee’s customer service.

CREE-MEE DRIVE-IN

801 S. Aurora St., Eldon Open Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday & Saturday 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday 11 a.m. -7 p.m.

ELDON DRIVE-IN

J

ust 413 feet from Cree-Mee is the Eldon Drive-In. Its sign declares it was first to tempt Eldon with “the original marshmallow Pepsi.” Cree-Mee, on the other hand, leads with its “World Famous” Chili Dog. Both drive-ins list a chili-cheese footlong dog and marshmallow Pepsi on their menus, and both satisfy loyal customers with them. Still there are differences. The biggest difference may be seating options. Cree-Mee has a drive-up window, but only outdoor seating. At Eldon Drive-In, customers can choose between the drive-through lane or indoor, air-conditioned booths. Nearby are games and in one corner hangs a television tuned to the Game Show Network. Tabletops gleam with lacquered advertising. Another difference is quantity. While a foot-long chili cheese dog is — well, a foot long at both drive-ins, the baskets of fries differ. Cree-Mee’s fries are crinkle-cut

ELDON DRIVE-IN

607 S. Aurora St., Eldon Open Monday-Sunday 8 a.m.-10 p.m. (Except for approximately 6 weeks in winter)

and thus stockier than the thinner fries served at Eldon Drive-In. That stocky fry may explain the apparent difference in quantity. Eldon Drive-In appears to serve more fries per basket than Cree-Mee, but no one should let that dissuade him. Both servings of fries are more than two people can enjoy without overeating and suffering. Eldon Drive In’s banana split is a dessert that four or more could share. Each of three soft-serve ice cream mounds towers above a clear plastic bowl lined with banana halves and set inside a larger cardboard tray thoughtfully provided to

catch drips, slides, and melts. On top of the ice cream are Mount-Everest sized swirls of whipped cream, perfect pillows for a smattering of chopped nuts, pastel sprinkles, and three maraschino cherries, one for each topping flavor below. The list of toppings at Cree-Mee and the Eldon Drive-In is about the same length and includes raspberry, hot fudge, and butter pecan. The hot fudge was warm enough to flow like lava, but not so warm as to melt the ice cream beyond enjoyment. The butter pecan had complete pecan halves stirred into a buttery caramel, and the raspberry tasted of fresh fruit. All in all, it was a delight — just as delicious as an identical one sampled at Cree-Mee, but just slightly more delicious because of whipped cream, a rich addition. Customers at Eldon Drive-In are fans because of owners Dwayne and his son Brian Basham. Those eating inside on a hot summer day mentioned the family as one reason they order their burgers, chili dogs, fries, and ice cream at the Eldon Drive-In. Customer service is the other reason everyone mentioned. Tom Helms has been the manager at the Eldon Drive-In for 15 years, a fact that speaks volumes about him and his employers. Helms likes working there, and he counts himself lucky to be included when the drive-in closes for six weeks each winter so that the Bashams and he can soak up some Florida sun. The rest of the year, they serve drive-in food seven days a week.

Val’s serves delicious pancakes in sizes that inspire people to snap pics so folks back home will appreciate just how much value Val’s gives to customers. A pancake from Val’s is larger than a dinner plate. More important, it’s light, fluffy, golden, and sweet before syrup is drizzled across the top. Eggs poached, over-easy, scrambled, and folded into an omelet are equally popular at Val’s.

A pork tenderloin weighing in at onehalf pound before breading is just as likely to require photo proof. Served with a bun; crisp, mild onion; dill pickle slices; lettuce and tomato; the tenderloin could feed the whole table. If cut into pieces and stacked in between that bun, the height would require jaws wide open to taste crisp-fried breading over mild, white pork. Hostess and Aunt Darlene Burgerson shows guests to their tables while Val herself, her daughters, and a granddaughter serve and bus as needed. They are the sassy servers — lively and quick to bring big platters for a big appetite, always served with a side of smile. Val’s success is due to loyal customers who appreciate good food and good service. They arrive several days every week for breakfast, brunch or lunch. On weekends, crowds average 400. Some come for breakfast served during all open hours while others wait for lunch items available at 10:30 a.m.

FUN, FAMILY, AND GOOD FOOD

n September 1, 2011, Dave Whittle opened his retirement dream: a bar where he could spend quality time with friends. Brothers-in-law Mike Scott and Tim Ochs soon joined the management team. Eight years later, Dave’s dream come true is doing well. Although Dave passed in April 2019, his wife Tabatha and family keep the Whittle’s Pub & Grub dream alive. Located in downtown Eldon, Whittle’s is one-half bar hosting camaraderie and pool, and one-half restaurant. Across the street is leased open-air space where Whittle’s hosts block parties with a cash bar. One is set for Whittle’s 8th anniversary on September 6th and will feature Kansas City’s Amarugla Ridge Runners. Another will be on September 28, for Eldon’s renowned Turkey Festival when Whittle’s will add Elvis to the daytime fun with Helen Russell and Company, then keep the party going with Pure Drive from from 8 p.m.-12:30 a.m. On October 8, in honor of Eldon High’s homecoming and alumni events, Whittle’s will present Ghost Town Salooners. Well-known for consistently good food, Whittle’s still varies its menu month-to-month, creating special sandwiches in July or barbecue choices in August, all under the direction of managers and head cook, Tracy Fry, who’s been with Whittle’s since day one. At all times, Whittle’s offers 11 delicious burgers beginning with ½ pound of fresh beef. The hot wings arrive dressed in Whittle’s own house-made sauce and served with Whittle’s own ranch dressing. The Cowboy Burger has a touch of tangy sweet barbecue sauce, also made in Whittle’s kitchen. The restaurant’s claim-to-fame food is a 10-ounce pork tenderloin locally sourced and hand-beaten before being dipped in a beer batter from wet to dry twice before frying. Special pricing during the restaurant’s anniversary will honor this menu star ordered at least 125 times weekly. Whittle’s began serving breakfast in July. Manager Tim Ochs says the portions for menu items such as omelets,

fter spending 19 years in retail Stacey Martin decided to purchase a restaurant. Located about a mile from her house, Stacey noticed a For Sale sign on a restaurant located by the Camdenton Square and decided to look into it. It became official in March 2018 when she closed on the property. Her son, who is stationed in the military, came up with the name Scuttlebutt — a Navy term for gossip or rumors. The one-room bar and restaurant has a simple menu which completely changed when Stacey took over. People seem to enjoy the

broasted chicken dinner, cooked under pressure until the skin comes out crispy yet moist inside. Another popular item is the Pork Tenderloin Basket, a 7-ounce, handcut and hand-breaded pork tenderloin cooked until golden brown. Once a week chef Eric Cross comes up with specials which runs the gamut when it comes to options. Whether it is a Korean beef dish or a reuben, regulars love the experiments he comes up with in the kitchen, especially the burgers. Often knock-offs from fast food restaurants and other popular chains, they are full of flavor and are fun ways to enjoy

more than just your typical burger and fries. Diners have enjoyed the Scuttlebutt Bomber (similar to White Castle’s sliders) as well as their version of a Big Mac. Behind the bar, Dawn has been bartending at this location for the last 12 years. She serves up a popular drink called the Scuttlebutt Shot made with Spanish liquor and heavy cream, which comes in a tiny beer mug. It’s not unusual to see a lunch crowd buy a round. The restaurant rolls out a select menu from 7-11 p.m. but it still has plenty of options including a number of appetizers as well as a few baskets and sandwiches. First responders receive a discount on food. Be on the lookout for the pig light. When illuminated (once or twice a month) that means they are serving pulled pork or brisket, but for a limited time only. For entertainment, there are four dart boards and a couple of televisions around the room. One Sunday a month a dart tournament is held and every Wednesday there is a blind draw dart tournament. Karaoke is on Saturdays, and on Tuesday nights either trivia or bingo is played.

oody’s is THE go-to bar for locals. After other places close, cooks and servers head to Woody’s to wind down before heading home. Open seven days with Happy Hour from 4-7 p.m. every day, when football, basketball, and baseball rule the airwaves, Woody’s nine TV screens will have the game on. The place is packed, says Denise Evans, the day-shift bartender, a job she’s held for almost 12 years because it’s a “homey bar,” adding “it’s a little bit country and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll.” Zach Odell bartends for the night shift. He says he’s happy to work at Woody’s because Mark Kelley is “the best owner-operator ever.” Loyal customers Lon and Judy Whitesell agree. They come in almost every day for a mug of beer because Woody’s is such a “nice place,” according to Lon. People shoot pool and get to know each other, he says. Judy rates the place “a double, even a triple 10.” Kelley has owned Woody’s since 1996. He attributes the bar’s success to games and sports. Not only do people come to Woody’s to watch games, they play shuffleboard, virtual golf tournaments, pool, and darts. Woody’s serves NO food, but people are welcome to order or carry in. La Tapatia Mexican Grill next door delivers to Woody’s. Every person along a crowded bar and at high-top tables drank from a bottle or mug of beer. That seems to be the drink of choice in this bar that is definitely not smoke-free, but beer and good feelings flow freely at Woody’s.

bar with her sister Tammy Wilde, who was also an original owner. “We have so many repeat customers,” Angie says. “People you know by name when they walk through the door. Personal service and home-cooked meals are a big draw.” The four page menu has lots of stickto-your-ribs food but favorites include: fried chicken, grouper sandwich and the portobello mushroom appetizer. They hand-bread everything from the chicken strips and tenderloin to the onion straws, and make 100 percent real mashed potatoes. Many people rave about the fried potato salad. To keep everything fresh, as much as possible is purchased locally, including beef from Tom’s Slaughter House located right cross the street. With non-smoking inside, it’s a family atmosphere so feel free to bring the kids. hen Angie Boagden and two other investors purchased a closed-down restaurant located down A Road in Camden County 12 years ago, they knew it was a leap of faith. Today, however, Angie says she wouldn’t have it any other way. It might seem a bit off the beaten path, but Willowes is only a 2-mile detour off of Highway 54 in Linn Creek. So close and so worth it. It’s got everything you could want — home cooked meals and friendly service in a neighborhood setting. Angie answers a burning question asked frequently, “How did you come up with the name?” She said when they were going to the bank for a loan all those years ago they had to think of a name quickly and came up with Willowes — because they knew they “will owe forever.” Today Angie owns the

From Condo Living to On the Green

T

hree years ago Steve and Stephanie Englert sold their home in O’Fallon and moved to Lake of the Ozarks. The Lake was their second home for many years, a place they would bring their family down on weekends and to vacation. At that time the couple preferred condo-living, but with retirement drawing near, they decided to look for something different. They sold their boat and their condo, and moved to Old Kinderhook. The ambiance, beauty and manicured greens made it an easy choice. Built by Thomas Construction, the home is all on one-level, with no steps, and is spacious. The couple says they particularly enjoy the amenities and getting to know their neighbors. Besides golf, Old Kinderhook has an 84-guest room hotel, rental cottages, villas and homes, fine-dining and other restaurants, a spa, marina, ice skating rink in the winter, and other services.

ABOUT THE HOMEOWNERS Steve worked for Schnucks in St. Louis, retiring as a division manger. Stephanie also worked for the grocery store chain as a meat department trainer. With two sons and a daughter still living in the city, they didn’t want to move too far away when they retired, so the Lake was the perfect location. They also have nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Steve likes to golf while Stephanie prefers to stay busy with volunteer work. They both serve on the auxiliary board for Lake Regional Health System, are active in their church, and enjoy fishing and traveling.

► Stephanie says she loves how well-built the three-bed, 3.5bath home is and has an open-air design with high ceilings, lots of windows and 8-foot doors.

▼ While the couple didn’t get to customize their home, they didn’t see the need to make very many changes after moving in. They did restain the upper portion of the cabinets a lighter color.

▲ The wall of windows in the breakfast nook gives you a glimpse into the wooded backyard, and the golf course and waterfall off to the right. ◄ The rooms are spacious, as seen in these photos of the master bed and bath.

LAKE LIFESTYLES // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

▲ Steve says the course is meticulous maintained and their lot is private with a patch of woods acting as a buffer from those playing on the course. The home is in between the 3rd and 4th tee. Most nights they like to take a golf cart ride around the property with their dog to see the wildlife, and relish the peace and quiet the resort community has to offer. ► Thomas Construction built their home as a spec house, right off the main thoroughfare as you drive into the community. It’s located next to a waterfall — the backdrop used by many guests for photo shoots, especially weddings.

A Golf-Cart Ride to Work

wice a week Ron Tussey pulls his golf cart out of the garage and drives to work. It’s a short commute to his part-time job as a Ranger at The Cove at the Lodge of Four Seasons. Originally from St. Louis, and later, Jefferson City, Ron and his wife, Lisa, purchased their home on the golf course in 1998 for the sole purpose of retirement. While Ron retired in 2003, Lisa continued to work up until last year. “Homes away from the water give you more bang for your buck,” Ron says. “If we didn’t live on the water, we knew that we wanted to live on a golf course. Single-level living was also a top priority.” While both are enjoying retirement, it

54

doesn’t mean they don’t keep busy. Ron works Fridays & Saturdays at The Cove and they both volunteer for a number of local organizations. Lisa plays a lot of golf and particularly enjoys tournaments in the Lake area. Ron sticks to the courses close to home, The Cove and The Ridge. He also spends his free time volunteering. He is chairman of the Architectural Control Committee for the Four Seasons Property Owners Association, and is vice president of the Horseshoe Bend Special Road District. Both Ron and Lisa co-chair the volunteers for the annual HK’s Golf Tournament held in June, and they co-chair with another couple the Elk’s annual golf tournament, which raises money to provide scholarships to five Lake area schools.

ABOUT THE HOMEOWNERS Ron was born in Muncie, Indiana while Lisa was raised in Columbia, Mo. He earned a bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering and went to work for Westinghouse in Muncie. In the 70s he was transferred to St. Louis for eight years before being transferred again to Jefferson City. He retired in 2003. Lisa is an Industrial Engineer and also worked for Westinghouse. Up until last year when she retired, Lisa was commuting to Jefferson City for her job as a Statistics Analyst for the Missouri Office of State Courts Administrator.

When the couple first moved into the home they were located on hole No. 3. The course has since been reconfigured and they now sit at hole No. 12.

▲ ► Ron and Lisa found what they were looking for pretty quick. After just two weekends with realtor Mary Albers, they walked through the front door and knew this would be their new home. The white-washed wood ceilings and screened-in porch were major selling points. Lisa also needed a space for her corner-shaped China cabinet which she found a spot for in the dining room. They also wanted to be close to fine restaurants and near a marina to keep their boat.

◄ A wall of bay windows in the breakfast nook provides sweeping views of the golf course in their backyard. Lisa hand-made the curtains which were designed specifically to optimize the view.

56

LAKE LIFESTYLES // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

▲ ◄ Lisa took advantage of the cool spring to expand their outdoor garden. An atrium inside is full of plants, provides access to the backyard and also has great views of the golf course.

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY Construction industry growing, cities seeing additional development — a look at Lake area marketplace trends STORY BY CHARIS PATIRES

L

ake area municipalities are reporting an increase in sales tax, county officials are seeing an uptick in assessed valuation, and applications for construction permits are climbing — all good indicators of strong and steady growth. According to an economy overview provided by the University Missouri Extension, local population and jobs have been trending upward and are expected to continue to rise. The construction industry is listed as the third largest growing industry in Camden and Morgan counties, coming in number five in Miller County. Add to that, the real estate market is booming and the tourism industry continues to thrive. Things are looking good at Lake of the Ozarks. Let’s take a look at what some local officials have to say about the Lake’s growing industries.

CONSTRUCTION & GROWING MARKETS Based on permits filed through the city of Lake Ozark, from January to June of this year, $10.6 million in estimated construction is scheduled to be completed. One of those permits was for a new commercial education building for School of the Osage, estimated to cost $6.6 million. Other projects include new commercial and residential buildings, as well as remodeling projects. The city of Osage Beach saw a total value of $5.5 million in permitted construction projects filed from January-June this year. Some of the bigger commercial projects include(d) a $1 million remodel of the former Osage Beach Lodge, a $350,000 remodel of the Holiday Inn Express, a $400,000 commercial addition at Dugan’s Paint,

and a $600,000 remodel of Parkway Bay Condos. There were 130 permits filed that included plans for many new residential construction, remodels and commercial projects. According to Camden County Assessor Marty McGuire, the county has been experiencing small and steady growth for a number of years. Camden County has a total assessed valuation on real estate of $1.357 billion. That includes residential, agriculture and commercial real estate. Personal property (cars, boats, docks, etc.) is valued at $295 million. McGuire says looking back, values have steadily increased each year but there has not been a big “boom,” which he says is preferred. Steady increases make for a more stable economy. Morgan County Presiding Commissioner Tony Stephens says they are seeing commercial growth in the northwest part of the county. Several new businesses have gone up along west Highway 52. The Mennonite community continues to increase in both population and business growth. Three new restaurants within the city limits of Versailles have opened in the last four years and several other businesses in town have expanded or opened additional locations within the county. “I feel Morgan County as a whole is showing growth in business and is steady in population growth. I think this year is going to show good numbers from people continuing to vacation and spend more time in our area,” Stephens said.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT According to Jeana Woods, president of the Lake of the Ozarks Regional Economic Development Council and the Osage Beach city administrator, the two issues they’ve been focusing a lot of attention on is housing and the workforce. There has been a large need for more affordable housing that meets the demand for all demographics in the area, she says, and it proves that the area is growing. Connecting those who can build with those who can buy/rent is key. “We have a lot of workers, and we want them to live where they work,” Woods said. “That builds stronger communities.” According to a recent housing study done by LOREDC, more families are migrating to the Lake. The area has an exceptional quality of life to offer with a low cost of living, great schools and large park systems. While there has been some notable projects with in the city that are making affordable housing available, many significant commercial projects have also been in the works. She points to a few commercial projects such as a $500,000 expansion at Miner Mike’s and the new construction taking place at School of the Osage. There is also the Osage Beach Commons project, a 13 acre retail project that is still 62

LAKE LIFESTYLES // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

in the planning stages but will offer new development and leasing opportunities for businesses. It will be located near the Osage Beach Marketplace off of the Passover Road exit. Woods says developers are very strategic in filling the gaps in the market by providing products and services that will meet the demand of the area. Also, earlier this summer it was announced that Old Navy would be coming to the Prewitt’s Point development next to Target in the spring of 2020. Plans are to build a 12,500 square-foot store. “We’ve definitely seen an increase and investment in the community in the commercial and industrial industries,” Woods said. The biggest project has been the announcement of Arrowhead Development, a 226-acre, five-phase project that has a diverse mix of retail, entertainment, and residential components planned on land located down Route KK. The first business to open within the development is the Arrowhead Senior Living facility. The assisted living community provides certified staff on duty 24 hours a day, licensed health care services, homecooked meals to residents, medication management, therapy and other services. In addition to the assisted living and skilled nursing wings, Arrowhead will also be building an independent living residence in the future.

The next phase of the project could be the construction of a tournament-sized soccer complex, spearheaded by the Lake of the Ozarks Convention & Visitor Bureau and Tri-County Lodging Association. According to CVB executive director Tim Jacobsen, discussion has been taking place for several years over building a soccer complex at Lake of the Ozarks. A spot was selected within Arrowhead Development after evaluating locations around the Lake and thanks to the donation of the land by developer Gary Mitchell. Proponents of the facility say a soccer complex would funnel new visitors to the area, brining them to the Lake during the “shoulder season,” in the spring and fall when most competitive teams play. A feasibility study shows that a 12-field soccer complex could draw hundreds of traveling teams (and their families) to the Lake, resulting in a $75 million economic impact for the Lake area each year. If all goes as planned, the complex would move forward if voters approve a 3 percent lodging tax increase on the November ballot. The increased lodging tax would pay for construction of the complex. “It would bring families to Lake of the Ozarks who wouldn’t be here,” Jacobsen said. “We know how the cycle works. People come to Lake of the Ozarks and experience it, and come back.”

T

wo lifetimes lived for the love of music. Two musicians performing for the Lake’s great fans. They are Sax on the Beach, a duo easily recognized by one saxophone and one pink guitar. Bill Ehelebe plays the sax and keyboard. Now and then, he adds his voice to the mix. Haley Powers’ contributions are her voice and her pink guitar. Fans also know Sax on the Beach for its repertoire. Bill’s favorite tunes are from the ’60s and ’70s while Haley loves the ’80s and ’90s. They’ve taught each other to sing from all of those 40 years, but they are also the kind of performers who care about their fans’ favorites. They add to their playlists when they prepare for weddings, learning new music from the 40s or this week’s top

10 — just what the bride, groom and their guests request. As the duo’s name implies, some of Sax on the Beach’s standards are coastal tunes, including “Under the Boardwalk” recorded by The Drifters in 1964. Another from 2017 has a similar effect — “Havana” recorded by Camila Cabello. One more from 2017, “Feel It Still,” brought people to their feet to rock the beat one night this summer at Papa Chubby’s. Part of the Bill’s musical power is clarity. Each note made with metal, reed, and breath is well-defined — as precise as Haley’s vocal notes, full of volume, range, and expression. The duo’s love for music, performance, and collaboration are front and center. Bill and Haley, quite simply, do what they do very well.

TEACHING HISTORY AND SINGING SONGS Haley joined the family business. Her father, Bobby Preston, played lead guitar across the U.S. his entire life. Her mother, Becky Powers, and sister, Anda, played and performed at the Lake when Haley was just four and five. The mother-daughter duo, first known as Crossfire, invited little Haley on stage to sing and feel the love audiences deliver with applause. Haley liked that love, and it set her on a path to sing for her supper. Her mother has passed, but her sister, now from Rolla, still performs with Cricket Alley while Haley is one-half of Sax on the Beach. Haley also had a dream to become a history teacher, a dream delayed longer than the one to perform. She married a man named Adam and became a parent to daughter Ava. Now, in 2019, she will join the Waynesville School District to make both dreams her reality. She vows never to leave music behind, however. Haley sees a direct link between teaching history and singing songs. Both tell stories. Both bring to life what we humans have been and hope to be. She plans to carry that love of story to waterfronts and classrooms; they’ll just be in different formats. One will be set to music, and the other will be drawn from books and discussion. Music is Haley’s passion and brings her great joy. She and partner Bill both love what they do. They often say they get paid to move equipment, but they sing for pure joy. “If music can make us feel happy, then we can use it to make others happy,” Haley says. Her original pink guitar was an old, clunky one, passed down from her father. It didn’t have the greatest sound quality, but it served the purpose as she began performing. When she used a different guitar — one more traditional in color — fans asked where the singer was. Haley, who was standing right on stage, realized her guitar was more memorable than her face so she has stuck with pink guitars ever since. She’s now on her third one, this one sparkly and good for good sound. A pink guitar and saxophone are the images on the cover of Sax on the Beach’s second album. The first was titled Sax on the Beach. The new one is Even Beachier

and has 15 cover songs from the 1960s to the present day. It sells for $15 — just $1 per song. Produced by Bryan Herzog in a Camdenton studio inside Potter’s House, Bill and Haley are proud of the product and give credit to Herzog’s professionalism for the quality of the sound delivered on vinyl or plastic.

PLAYING TO CONNECT WITH THE AUDIENCE Bill hails from St. Louis where he began playing music in grade school and later in bands, including one featuring Missouri native, Michael McDonald, well-known from his time spent in vocals and on keyboard with The Doobies and Steely Dan. After Vietnam-era service, Bill and his wife Sue became regular weekend tourists at Lake of the Ozarks for many years. They loved the life here so much that they took a chance, pulled up their big city roots, and moved here full-time. They both found work and found the schools good ground for the family that came along. Now that their children are adults, Sue has retired from a career as an RN with Lake Regional, and Bill completed a career with UPS so he walked back on stage for a well-deserved “encore.” He returned to his first love: music.

About 13 years ago, he met and began playing in a four-person band with Haley. They became a duo about 11 years ago because, as Bill put it, they share the same goal. They play because they love to play, and they love to connect with audiences through their music. Haley also notes that Bill is a “SUPER talented sax player.” Sax on the Beach is a seasonal act. Bill goes to Florida to spend time with his son and grandchildren through the Missouri winter. He keeps his talent sharp by playing at Open Mic nights or as a fill-in sax player with local bands. However, Sax on the Beach is wellknown and in demand year-round for weddings, catered events, and family reunions so Haley performs as Strings on the Beach with guitarist Lee Shalinsky if Bill is in Florida. Bill re-teams with Haley when he returns to the Lake. It’s a great gig for both of them because a sax is unique in most bands of two and because their repertoire is huge, thanks in part to Haley’s gift for remembering lyrics after hearing a song just twice. More important, they simply love to make music for the Lake’s great fans. They want them to sing along, bob their heads, tap their fingers in time to the tunes, and get to their feet to move with the beat. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

Wedding

azzling etails Tradition, unique design and a rooftop ceremony make for the perfect fall wedding STORY BY CHARIS PATIRES PHOTOGRAPHY BY MITCH PHELPS/ADVENTURE THEORY MEDIA

Erinn Brue and Steven Steffen met on Cinco de Mayo in 2013. At the time, her best friend had started dating his roommate, so they had met up for drinks at a bar called the IceHouse in Omaha, Nebraska. They started hanging out and by the end of the summer, they officially began dating. After several years together, the couple purchased a home and before they moved in Steven had planned to pop the question. To celebrate Erinn’s 30th birthday the couple had plans to go out to celebrate with family but swung by their house to measure the yard to build a fence. He took the opportunity to get down on one knee to propose — at the place where they would start their lives together. He secretly planned a celebratory dinner/engagement party with both sides of the family. “I was completely shocked and we had an absolute blast,” Erinn said. “The whole day was amazing and it is still one of the best and most fun days of my life.”

Erinn and Steve share many of the same values and goals. “We also have a lot of the same interests, so we have a lot of things to do together,” Erinn says. “I think we have mutual respect and trust, and truly feel like we are a team.” The couple went with a vintage/country theme for their wedding. Lace, tan and cream colors, burlap and a dark red/ wine accent color was chosen for much of the décor. The tables had burlap lace runners with either flower or candle centerpieces. An Irish tradition of tying the knot was done during the ceremony. It represents the couple as individuals and the qualities they bring to the relationship. When the ropes were tied together in a fisherman’s knot, it represented the vows made that day. The knot will be left tied together to symbolize the marriage and how, like the knot, it will become unbreakable and only gets stronger when pressure is applied. Each layer of the cake had a different flavor: chocolate, red velvet or carrot cake. The cupcakes were a mixture of those as well.

Steven’s family vacationed at Lake of the Ozarks growing up and the couple took several trips to the Lake when they were dating. They decided to get married at the Lake because it was a good location for a destination wedding within driving distance for guests. The wedding was set for September 29, 2018 at the Lodge of Four Seasons. During a boat ride about a year after the couple started dating, they drove by boat past The Lodge of Four Seasons and were impressed. “We both thought it was a cool venue and a good place to have a wedding one day se we just kept it in the back of our minds for when we got married,” Erinn said. The couple lives in Omaha, Neb. Steven works at LRS Healthcare as a senior staffing manager while Erinn has been an ICU nurse at Lakeside Hospital since 2011. They spent their honeymoon in Hawaii.

The ceremony was held on the Lakefront Terrace with the reception on the Rooftop of the Lodge. Their friend Ben Cannon performed the ceremony. The bridesmaids wore long, lace, dark red dresses. Erinn’s Maid of Honor was her sister, Meghan Molitor, and her bridesmaid was Abby Long, her friend from collage who introduced the couple. The men wore gray/tan suits. Steve’s co-best men were his brother, Dustin Steffen, and long-time friend Andy Havlovic. The flower girl wore a white, lace, longsleeve dress with a dark red headband, and the ring bearer wore grey pants, a cream shirt and red suspenders. Listening to their friends and family give a toast, and their first dance together were some of the more memorable experiences that day for Erinn.

78

LAKE LIFESTYLES // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

One of the most touching parts about the wedding was what her family did to carry on the tradition of “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” For something old Erinn had used a detachable lace sleeve from her Mom’s wedding dress to wrap around her bouquet. Something borrowed was the bracelet her sister wore during her wedding. Something new was a French bulldog charm that was attached to the bracelet to remember their dog that had passed away unexpectedly before the wedding. Something blue was a message and the wedding date sewn on the inside of Erinn’s wedding dress by her Mom. All of the groomsmen are in a fantasy football league that they take very seriously. As a gift to the ones who have won the league over the years, they received a championship ring and a display case.

Wonderland Camp celebrates 50 years of service In 1969, Charles J. Miller had a dream he was determined to make a reality and he did. Miller and his brother-in-law donated more than 200 acres to carve out a place for campers with disabilities to come experience the great outdoors. Working with various groups and the Missouri Jaycees, by 1972 the first campers were enjoying the outdoor experience. Located off Highway W near the crossroads of Miller and Morgan counties, the camp offers weekly sessions throughout the summer on 230-some acres. A fully accessible camp that includes residential housing, medical facilities and miles of winding accessible trails throughout the woods right down to the shoreline. People will all types of disabilities attend each summer. The camp staff is there to put each camper first and to make sure they have the time of their life. The facility has a huge intricate tree house, a swimming pool and many other amenities. While fundraising events and other activities took place throughout the summer, the big bash to celebrate the success of Wonderland Camp is scheduled for Sept. 14 with an anniversary party at the camp. The party will run from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. with doors open to the public with tours, and challenges on the road climbing wall, along with other activities.

Retirement Section

YOU’RE RETIRED …

NOW WHAT?

A day in the life of a retiree at the Lake

H

ave you retired and just can’t figure out what to do with all of your free time? I can understand if you want to sit in a lounge chair and sip your favorite beverage, but eventually you’ll get bored. After awhile you might be wondering “where is everybody and what are they doing?” There are many ways retirees enjoy spending time at Lake of the Ozarks. If you are on a budget, some of the things we list are free. Others are available for a minimal fee — a small price to pay to meet a few new friends and become active in the community.

JOIN A CLUB Did you know there are so many clubs or associations to join that are full of retirees? The Lake of the Ozarks Idiots Club was founded by two retired educators and is now one of the largest charitable groups at the Lake. Working through Lake area school districts, social agencies and civic groups, the club helps to provide a variety of needs for children that would typically go unfunded. They provide assistance for things like purchasing an instrument so a student can join the school band, pay for gas for them to go back and forth to work, or even send them on a shopping spree for new clothing. Membership is only $5 a year and the club has social gatherings from the end of April to October. The Newcomers/Longtimers Club is made up of a group of women, who meet regularly each month for activities such as cards and games, luncheons, book clubs and happy hour. Their 2019/2020 season

STORY BY KAREN THORNTON

Kick-Off Party will be held September 26 from 4-6 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Osage Beach. Plan to attend and find out all that this group has to offer. A Google search will result in a Lions Club or Elks Club close to you. There are also two American Legion Posts in the area — one in Lake Ozark and another in Sunrise Beach. Gary Mook, 77 years young, is a lifetime member of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) and actively involved in the American Legion Post 624. The American Legion is a veterans organization with fundraisers held to benefit veteran’s programs. When Mook settled down at the Lake, he spotted a fireman (about his age) and said, “I want to do that,” so he became a volunteer fireman and first responder for the Gravois Mills Fire Protection District for 12 years, becoming a Lieutenant before he hung up his hat. Mook retired after 30 years of military service. His family has had a presence at the Lake since the 50’s. He met his companion through an on-line connection and they both enjoy golf with the Legion’s league. Although they live lakeside, there is hardly time to enjoy boating as they both stay busy with their many “fun” volunteer projects with the organization.

The VFW also has a Lady’s Auxiliary, the largest organization in the world dedicated to providing services for women. There are many social opportunities through the Legion. They offer inexpensive, all volunteer, home-cooked means on Wednesday and Friday evenings. If you like to ride bikes (the big ones) the American Legion Riders have chapters all over the United States. There are about 20 chapters in Missouri alone. The Sunrise

Beach VFW offers Tai Chi for seniors on Mondays from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Instructor Elizabeth Barrett has a background in martial arts and exercise, catering to the 60+ age group. There are three Elks Lodges in the area, all community service driven. They provide scholarships to local youth and operate a Christmas basket program that helps about 120 local families. Elks member Frank Scarpino is retired

from a 37-year career with General Motors as an International Locomotive Sales Manager. Frank and his wife Jacki lived in Hinsdale, Ill. and enjoyed coming to the Lake for 32 years prior to his retirement in 1999. He had an early retirement and just wasn’t ready to sit still. Through their years visiting the Lake, staying at Lone Oak Point Resort, they became close friends with the owners and enjoyed the area. Within a year of settling down they were told about the Elks Lodge 2705 in Sunrise Beach and became members. Frank and Jacki were educated on the function of the Elks realizing it wasn’t just about comradeship and good food — it was also about giving back. It became a busy life for the couple. When Jacki was working as an Medical Technologist at Lake Regional Hospital she became a member of the Lady Elks, and Frank became an officer at the Lodge. It wasn’t too long before they both became involved in the Elks’ Drug

Awareness Program and Frank became State Chair. They both keep busy by volunteering for the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, and through activities in their church. Frank is also a member of the Knights of Columbus, who recently contributed $50,000 to their church’s “Mother of the Shrine” project. The Scarpino’s enjoy what they do and wonder how they fit it all in. “It’s what keeps us young and ready to go,” Frank said. Because of Frank’s previous career and flying all his life, they now take time to drive through the country to appreciate the beauty, but always enjoy coming back home to the Lake.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER Located in Lake Ozark, the Hope House is a worthy cause with “boots on the ground” workers keeping the not-for-profit running. They started by handing out flip flops to people with no shoes but today the non-profit runs a food pantry, thrift store and provides emergency assistance to those in need. Lake Regional Health System offers many opportunities to volunteer through the Lake Regional Health System Auxiliary. Hundreds of volunteers pitch in to help support the hospital’s efforts to provide exceptional care for their patients. Volunteers do a number of things from staffing the gift shop, helping patients check in, or organize the annual Hospital Ball. If you want to put all of your years of business knowledge to good use, Lake of the Ozarks SCORE is a great place to volunteer. They match mentors with small business owners to help them grow their business. SCORE counselors are knowledgeable in a variety of industries and have the business expertise that will help others start or run a successful business. Animal lovers out there will have no problem finding the right place to spend a few hours each week. There are several shelters located all over the Lake area. Local shelters always need help sorting donations for their thrift stores, walking adoptable pets, organizing events and performing other tasks to find these animals forever homes. There are plenty of organizations that need a helping hand in the Lake area. Find something you are passionate about and volunteer!

The Missouri Master Naturalist program is an educational and volunteer service program for adults. The Lake of the Ozarks Chapter meets the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Central Bank in Camdenton. They offer a variety of “outdoorsy” activities including monthly kayak meet-ups at Ha Ha Tonka. The last one of the season is September 14 from 8:30 a.m.-noon.

Elizabeth Barrett teaches a Tai Chi class at the American Legion in Sunrise Beach.

GET OUTDOORS Ever thought about becoming a Missouri Master Naturalist? If you love the outdoors it would be a great way to learn about the area. Offered by the University of Missouri MU Extension, Master Naturalists regularly meet to hear from speakers and to discuss kayaking, fishing, gardening, and anything to do Mother Nature. If you enjoy gardening, the

Master Gardener program will teach you everything you need to know to plant in Missouri. Trish Barrett has been a part of the Missouri Extension Program for almost five years. Before moving to the Lake in 2012 to retire, she was an active Master Gardner in Washington, D.C. and decided to look into the local program to see how she could become involved. “We need to continue to learn after

retirement. No matter how old you are.” Barrett said. “A gentlemen called the Extension office at 82 wanting to know if he was too old…No… There is something for all ages from the day you retire.” Lake resident Carolyn Soloman became a Master Naturalist several years ago. Once the class has been completed, participants are required to give back 40 hours each year and continue education in the field of conservation. Through her relationships with the county, Soloman became a part of the Morgan County Extension Board of Directors and is involved in the Master Naturalist Kayak program. The group meets the second Saturday of the month during the summer at 8:30 a.m. at Ha Ha Tonka to provide instruction and encourage others to kayak. She also assists in the Missouri Stream Team, in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Conservation. The group tests for healthy water quality in local streams. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

87

Soloman also is the Lake Regional Hospital Volunteer Coordinator. Currently, and at the age of 72, she maintains a job as the manager of the Westlake Aquatic Center. “We are never too old to learn,” she says. “Be open and get to know other people.”

CHURCH FELLOWSHIP There are many houses of worship in the Lake area so it is easy to find one closest to your home. Most churches have fellowship dinners, lady’s and men’s groups, Bible study, fundraisers, field trips, and a variety of opportunities to meet and mingle.

FIND A HOBBY

Whatever it is you like to do, you will find others with similar interests. Like to dance? The Lake of the Ozarks Swing Dance Club meets once a month offering dance lessons as well as themed dance events for a toe-tapping good time. What

The Lake Area Community Orchestra performs a series of free concerts each season. If you are wanting to dust off that musical instrument in your closet, it’s a great way to rediscover your talent.

LAKE LIFESTYLES // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

about woodworking? There is the Lake Area Woodworkers Guild that meets several times a week. Enjoy playing cards? The Lake Area Duplicate Bridge Club meets three times a week to play. If you are a theater buff or like to paint, the Lake Arts Council can hook you up with organizations to join and events being held in the community. No matter your interests, I assure you there are others who enjoy many of the same things. Just take a look around, ask around, and you just might be surprised with what you’ll find.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC If you used to play an instrument or sing in a choir, the Lake of the Ozarks Community Orchestra and the Lake Area Chorale are always looking for new members. They are active year-round. If you’d rather be an observer, the Lake Jazz Band brings in talented musicians to perform at their monthly socials. There’s also the Lake of the

Ozarks Blues Society hosting monthly jam sessions and meetings. The Lake of the Ozarks Jazz Society is another amazing group to meet new people and listen to great music. All of these groups have more information found through the Lake Arts Council.

MEET OTHER RETIREES Senior centers are more than just a place to sit in a rocking chair. They area a social center with a hub of activities. Most of the senior centers in the area have a weekly lunch program at a reasonable cost, offered to the general public. The Central Missouri Area on Aging (Aging Best) has 30 senior centers within the organization that offer a variety of programs including craft projects, oil paining and woodcarving taught by qualified teachers who provide all the supplies. Many of the projects completed are sold or raffled for donations to support a charitable program.

STAYING ACTIVE INTO RETIREMENT

S

Tips & community resources that will keep you moving

taying active is important as you get older. Being inactive leads to serious health issues and seniors with more leisure time may find themselves falling into bad habits. According to the World Health Organization, adults aged 65 years and older should do at least 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity physical activity (walking, housework and chores, gardening, sports) and 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity (running, aerobics, fast cycling) a week. For additional health benefits the WHO also recommends another 5 hours of moderate-intensity physical activity per week. Seniors should work on building strength, improving balance and getting some cardio activity into their daily lives. Like everyone of any age, they should also follow a well-balanced diet. Here are a few ways you can improve your health and wellness through resources available right in your own backyard. Class times and dates are subject to change, so make sure you call ahead for more information.

Walking is a great activity for seniors because it is low impact but keeps you moving. When the weather is nice there are lots of paths and trails in the Lake area to explore. The paved walking paths along Horseshoe Bend make it easy and convenient to log a few miles. walking trails. It’s a great way to enjoy the fall colors! A walking club is offered at the Eldon Community Center. It’s free to participate and is held year-round. For questions, call 573 392-2156. The Tri-County YMCA has an indoor walking track. Available to members and non-members with a day pass. It is important for people of all ages to have an estate plan in place, more so for seniors It is important for people of all ages to have an estate plan in place, more so for seniors. It surprises people to know that if you pass away with over $40,000 in probate assets and don’t have appropriate estate planning documents in place, your assets will be tied up in probate court proceedings for a minimum of six months. In addition to the inconvenience and stress, there are significant expenses with probate court: publication requirements, court costs, and attorney fees. If the assets are complicated, it can take well over a year. The best way to maximize the benefit to your heirs and beneficiaries is to speak with a qualified attorney. Many of the estate planning clients I counsel

are overwhelmed and procrastinate estate planning simply because they just don’t know where to start. That’s where I come in. It’s my job to make this a stress-free experience. No one looks forward to having the “after I’m gone” discussion, but once we sit down and explore options, clients usually feel more comfortable and a sense of relief. I have been a licensed attorney for eight years and have six years of estate planning experience. I’ve handled estates of all sizes. Even clients that think they may have meager assets can benefit from an estate plan. Examples of documents that I recommend and frequently draft for people include: trusts, wills, non-

probate transfers, healthcare directives, and powers of attorney. Estate planning can be especially important when you and your spouse have a “blended” family. Missouri’s laws of intestacy do not include step-children or unmarried significant others as heirs. I offer free trust amendments within one year of an initial trust. It is important to me that people feel confident in the choices that they’ve made, so I offer this incentive to encourage them to make changes when appropriate. If you’d like to learn more about your options or get started on a plan, please give me a call.

Stroke Care: Minutes Matter To get the best care when you or a loved one is having a stroke, you need to have speed, expertise and experience on your side. As a state-designated Level II Stroke Center, Lake Regional provides all three. Two keys to reducing stroke-related disability and death are fast diagnosis and treatment. Lake Regional also offers: • A 24/7 acute stroke team. The team includes neurologists and others experienced in stroke diagnosis and treatment. • Excellent coordination with emergency medical services personnel. This allows care to start before the patient reaches the Emergency Department door.

• Fast access to brain imaging services. That cuts the time it takes to diagnose a stroke. The sooner a diagnosis is made, the sooner treatment can begin. • Ability to perform thrombolysis with TPA, a life-saving treatment that can immediately break up a stroke-causing clot.

Support for stroke recovery

Recovery time after a stroke varies — it can take weeks, months or even years. If you have had a stroke, rehabilitation therapy may help. Rehabilitation begins in the hospital and continues after your release as ordered by your doctor. Lake Regional’s services for stroke survivors include neurology, a skilled nursing facility for intermediate

care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, home health and a free support group for stroke survivors and their families. Many stroke survivors also benefit from Lake Regional’s Chronic Care Management Program, which helps patients with two or more chronic conditions navigate their health care for better outcomes.

National recognition

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association has recognized Lake Regional Health System for following the latest research-based standards for stroke care. Learn about our Get With The Guidelines Achievement Award at lakeregional.com/strokecenter.

A COMMON FRUSTRATION FOR MEN LEARN THE FACTS, IMPROVE QUALIT Y OF LIFE BY ANITA HARRISON

M

en might not be familiar with the term “benign prostatic hyperplasia,” but there’s a good chance they have or will have this condition. Most just call it an enlarged prostate, and it affects about half of all men older than 50. “It’s normal for the prostate to continue to grow as a man ages, and this condition doesn’t seem to increase the risk of prostate cancer,” says Lake Regional Urologist Eric McQueary, D.O. “But an enlarged prostate can press against and pinch the urethra, the tube that carries urine from McQueary the bladder. This pressure can cause pain and some frustrating problems.”

SYMPTOMS OF BPH INCLUDE: • A frequent, urgent need to urinate • Needing to go at night • Difficulty starting to urinate • A slow or interrupted urine flow • Dribbling after urination ends • Feeling that you still need to go • Incontinence (leakage) • Pain during urination or after ejaculation

These symptoms sometimes signal other problems, including bladder infections, prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate gland), or even bladder or prostate cancer. “Men should tell their doctors right away if they have symptoms,” Dr. McQueary says. “It’s the only way to know for sure what is going on and to get the right treatment.”

100

LAKE LIFESTYLES // SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

WHAT TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE? For mild BPH symptoms, simple steps might provide relief: Reduce fluid intake; exercise the pelvic floor muscles; and steer clear of caffeine and alcohol. If these don’t work, a doctor may prescribe medicine to shrink the prostate or relax muscles near it to ease symptoms. Another option is tissue-removing surgery, which can be very effective in relieving symptoms but is often delayed to avoid potential side effects, including urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Lake Regional Urology provides another option, a minimally invasive procedure called UroLift. “The UroLift System has an excellent safety profile and provides a first-line treatment alternative to drug therapy or invasive surgery,” Dr. McQueary says. “Importantly, the UroLift System provides fast relief from BPH symptoms, while preserving sexual function. Men choose this treatment for better overall quality of life.”

HOW TO BRING UP SENSITIVE SUBJECTS Some conversations can be hard to start, but honest communication is a must for receiving good health care. Speak up using these tips: 1) Keep up with your regular checkups. Having an established relationship with a trusted doctor can make difficult conversations easier. 2) Plan to be direct. You might be tempted to be vague, but the conversation will go better if you provide clear information. Prepare ahead of time. Ask yourself: • What exactly are my symptoms?

• Are the symptoms constant? If not, when do I experience them? • Does anything I do make the symptoms better? Or worse? • Do the symptoms affect my daily activities? Which ones? How? 3) Take notes and ask questions. You need to understand and remember the doctor’s answers. Make sure the treatment plan is one you can and will follow. Event Spotlight

THE BIKERS ARE COMING The 13th annual Lake of the Ozarks BikeFest will be held September 11-15 BY CHARIS PATIRES

The ultimate biker experience comes to the Lake every September. Vendors and entertainment, and of course enjoying the fall weather on two wheels, makes for a fun event that draws people to the area. Last year, an estimated 75,000 motorcycles and 125,000 people were in attendance, according to the Lake of the Ozarks Convention & Visitor Bureau. A new 2018 Harley-Davidson Softail Fat Bob will be up for grabs during the Passport give-a-way. Participants have several days to hit all 24 stops, get their passport stamped and turn it in by deadline to be entered for a chance to win. One of the vendor village locations is at the Lake of the Ozarks Harley-Davison in Osage Beach. Not only is it a great spot to shop for all your gear but Dog Days always

sets up under a tent in the parking lot serving food and drinks with live music. Luby’s Plaza on the Bagnell Dam Strip will also be the site of a vendor village.

BIKEFEST TIPS √ Be prepared for all types of weather. It may be hot or it may be cold, so dress appropriately. √ It is required to wear a helmet in the state of Missouri. √ There is a lot of traffic that week, so keep an eye out for bikers and use caution!

WHERE TO RIDE A popular ride for bikers is the loop around the Lake. Starting at Bagnell Dam, head north on Hwy. 54 and take the first exit in Eldon (turn left and head into

Every single month out of the year there are fishing tournaments held at Lake of the Ozarks. Yes, even in the winter. A total of 515 tournaments are expected to be held from one end of the Lake to the other by the end of this year, judging by the number of regatta permits filed with the state. The busiest months are June and July with more than 70 tournaments each month, although some fishing experts would tell you those aren’t necessarily the best months to fish at the Lake‌ In October, the largest event will take place, the Big Bass Bash, drawing as many as 1,200 boats with anglers hoping to take home the $100,000 grand prize.
