She began her career as a radio jingle writer, then upon graduation from college with a degree in Writing from Missouri State University, worked as copywriter for a variety of advertising agencies in Springfield and Kansas City. She had the opportunity to write for some high-profile clients, including Tyson, Helzberg Diamonds and Lodge of Four Seasons. As reporter and editor of a local smalltown newspaper, she spent over 15 years interviewing and telling the stories of unique people in all walks of life.

Marie, her husband Stan, and their two children have been coming to the Ozarks every summer for the past 28 years. The family made their dreams come true recently when they purchased a lakefront home in the Four Seasons neighborhood. Marie not only gets to continue enjoying this life with her husband and children, but also with her granddaughters Layla and Harper.

Simply the Best AS WE ENTER THE SUMMER SEASON AT LAKE OF THE OZARKS, there’s no better time to focus on

the local businesses that make our area so great. And there are a lot of them! It’s our annual Best of the Lake issue and it seems that our locals and business owners deserve extra accolades this year. There really was no time to slow down during COVID. If anything, we got busier than ever and businesses found themselves growing to keep up with demand. Anybody who owns their own business knows how difficult it can be, especially in a tourism-driven market. I have a lot of respect for the business owners I know in the area. Most are hands-on, spend long hours taking care of customers while giving back to the community, and are rising above the challenges of employee and product shortages. They deserve some recognition. Our Best of the Lake winners list is a great place to start. It’s a resource for finding just about anything you are looking for whether you are visiting, live here full-time or just spend weekends at the Lake. I’d like to congratulate each of our winners this year. You’ve been voted The Best by our readers and have earned a well-deserved pat on the back. While our focus is on who our readers chose to be among The Best, we couldn’t help but include a few of my favorite stories in this issue. I’m particularly fond of Ozarks Amphitheater and all of the great shows they have been brining to the Lake area. For anyone who hasn’t been to a performance at the outdoor music venue, it is a must. There are plenty of internationally-known artists coming, so check out the schedule. I always love it when we can do stories with a purpose. We’ve featured a local artist who you can see each week at the Camdenton Farmers Market on the Square. She not only sells her own work but also items made by Haitian artists. All money goes right back to these artists as a source of income and helps fund mission projects. I grabbed a few handmade pieces that made great gifts for the people in my life and hope you consider doing the same to support a good cause.

4 lakenewsonline.com

Finally, we can all probably agree that one of our favorite things to do this time of year is to get out on the water. Whether it’s boating or kayaking, you’ll find stories that are informative and helpful as we all enjoy the sunny and warm months ahead. Stay safe and have a great summer at the Lake!

n 2021, Condé Nast Traveler declared Ha Ha Tonka State Park to be Missouri’s best state park because of its “caves, cerulean blue sinkholes, and a large natural bridge.” Right here at home, visitors know the park’s features also include a deep, fish-rich, no-wake cove known as Spring Cove. The spring feeding the cove is the state’s 12th largest, releasing 56 million

gallons of that “cerulean blue,” ice-cold water into the Lake daily. It can be seen from overlooks high above, near the castle’s ruins. It can also be seen from a paved walkway at the cove’s head. From there, hikers can ascend 316 steps to other vantage points showing the spectacular waters and vistas for which this park is known and loved. Ha Ha Tonka’s Park Superintendent, Ryan King, is proud to oversee Ha Ha

Tonka. He recently earned the Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) one and only Rock Star Award for his efforts to keep the park open and safe through the challenging days of 2020 and 2021. King notes those days were “exciting,” too. People gravitated to the state’s parks, reacquainting themselves with Missouri’s rich natural gems, excited to be outdoors, but crowds endangered their experience so King col-

laborated with the Ha Ha Tonka team. Together, they planned and worked long hours to prevent overcrowding so the maximum number of people could truly enjoy the open-air. One special open-air opportunity is to see the park from the water. Kayaks are available to rent at Spring Cove. Paddlers will enjoy a peaceful pace, the scent of native plants in bloom, and perhaps a statuesque heron posing on a nearby log. Paddlers will also enjoy toning core muscles and strengthening the upper body. Benefits from exercise is one reason Superintendent King became a kayak instructor, certified by the American Canoe Association. Park visitors can take advantage of his training for a modest $5 fee. The money reserves a place in Learn to Paddle courses for those who want to know more before venturing out on their own. It also maintains and buys kayaks. Training is not a requirement, however. One piece of advice King emphasizes is the Lake’s pace. On Saturdays, for example, the cove is busy with boaters coming and going, coving, and fishing. Kayakers will be just one of many using the cove. Traffic is lighter other days of the week. Ha Ha Tonka also offers stand-up paddle boards. Boards are fewer in number and there is no training for their

song, the occasional fish slapping the water, and good physical exercise for all ages. From the cove, paddlers will see the castle high above, the tall water tower, and Missouri’s landscape—great state gems for all to gather.

use. A dozen kayaks are available daily. The number available for both boards and kayaks require planning ahead and making reservations. Paddlers can leave the cove, of course. One destination is the 13-mile Big Niangua River Trail (BNRT), accessible by kayak. Maps online guide paddlers to places motorized boats cannot go. Paddlers can enter Onyx Cave or study the Gauge House once used to measure the height of the river. DO’S AND DONT’S OF BOATING ON LAKE OF THE OZARKS Rules every boater should know before heading out on the water Story by

MARIE KROLIKOWSKI

8 lakenewsonline.com

P

ersonally, I have been comfortable at the wheel of a boat for the past 40plus years. I’ve boated a number of waterways — everything from small lakes and rivers to Lake Michigan. I’m fully aware of what the terms can, nun, port and starboard mean. I know it’s necessary to run the blower prior to starting the boat. I’ve pulled skiers, docked the boat, and loaded the boat onto the trailer. In spite of my experience, I was humbled to score a meager 88 percent on the Missouri boating test. The minimum for passing is 80 percent. The moral of this story: there’s always something new to learn. Those of us who boat the Lake of the Ozarks know there are times when we simply glide across the water with barely another boat in site, and other times when the number of boats and waves makes it extremely challenging. Mark Niedergerke,

CHRIS PATIRES

explained, are novice boaters who are not familiar with navigating a boat or boating rules. An equally concerning issue is intoxicated drivers. Aside from knowing your boat, the rules, and remaining sober there are other factors in boating safety.

“Boating etiquette and boating courtesy are important,” Beck said. “Drivers need to be mindful of navigation rules, no wake buoys, and the wake they leave behind and the impact it has on other boats and the environment.” He went on to explain that it’s necessary to give anchored or stationary vessels a wide enough berth, a minimum of 100 feet if possible. It’s advised not to anchor in the middle or a channel or in the middle of the lake, and not to ski or tube in the middle of the lake either. “As captain, your guests need to listen

to the rules,” Beck said. “Passengers need to stay seated when the boat is underway, and wearing life jackets is highly advised. Don’t let your passengers ride in places on the boat where it’s illegal, and don’t overload your boat with too many passengers. The capacity plate on the boat indicates the maximum weight capacity as well as the maximum number of passengers the boat can safely carry. And again, have a designated driver.” Many of the boating accidents at the Lake, Beck said, are due to inattentiveness and not knowing the navigational rules. These include ignoring the nighttime speed limit, driving too fast for conditions, and just not paying attention. The majority of the injuries reported are broken arms, spinal compressions, and neck injuries from people standing while the boat is hitting hard into waves. “Out of all the waterways in the state of Missouri, the Lake of the Ozarks contributes to half of all boating accidents, DWI’s on the water, and injuries,” Beck

ST OCK P HOT O

a sales associate with Formula Boats of Missouri in Osage Beach, said the key to taking the rough waves is knowing your boat. He provides on-the-water orientation for the boats he sells, and said most dealerships at the Lake will do the same. The “sweet spot,” the position where your boat moves best across the water, varies among the different types of boats. “Finding that spot takes practice, but every boat has one,” Niedergerke explained. “It’s a balance of speed and where you set your trim. When you’ve found it, you can hear it and you can feel it.” Although a heavier boat will take the impact of a wave better, these strategies will prove to be effective with any boat. Niedergerke added that drivers need to look ahead and try to read upcoming wave patterns. Taking the wake at a 45-degree angle helps smooth the impact as well as slowing down for the bigger ones. Niedergerke knows that even the most qualified drivers can run into issues, and suggests checking the weather forecast before heading out. What starts out as a sunny day can quickly turn into a storm. Other advice includes remaining sober behind the wheel, keeping your head on a swivel to know what’s going on around you, and to know the rules of the water. Keep an anchor on your boat in the event you break down, and extra line in case you need to be towed. In addition, make sure life jackets are easily accessible for all passengers. Niedergerke stressed that all drivers would benefit from a boating safety education course. Doug Beck, President of the Captains Association of Missouri and Co-Chairman of the Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council, couldn’t agree more. A main safety concern at the Lake, Beck

• Operating a boat while intoxicated is a criminal offense subject to a fine and/or time in jail. The offense is defined as operating a vessel with a BAC of .08% or greater • The minimum age for operating any watercraft in the State of Missouri is 14 years-of-age unless under the direct, on-board supervision of a parent, guardian, or other person 16 years-of-age or older. Parents and guardians are legally responsible for the underage operator and their actions. • Children under 7 years-of-age must wear a personal flotation device at all times, unless confined in a fully enclosed area such as a cabin. • The speed limit at night is 30 mph. • Riding on certain bows, gunwales, railing, on the top of the seat, back, and decking over the back of a motorboat is prohibited. • It is illegal to operate a boat or personal watercraft at speeds greater than “idle speed” within 100 feet of a dock, occupied or anchored vessel and buoyed area. • It’s illegal for PWC operators to: - Weave through congested waterway traffic - Jump the wake of another motorboat when visibility is obstructed - Become airborne while crossing the wave of another motorboat and within 100 feet of the motor-

boat creating that wake - Operate at greater than “no wake” speed within 50 feet of any other vessel, PWC, or person in the water - Every passenger on a PWC while underway must wear a USCG-Approved personal floatation device • An operator of any vessel or PWC commits the offense of leaving the scene of an accident if he or she knows injury or damage has occurred, but fails to stop and give the other party or law enforcement their name, address, vessel registration number and driver’s license number. • All vessels shall display from sunset to sunrise proper navigational lights when underway. No other lights, continuous spotlights or docking lights shall be exhibited. • Motorboats shall carry on board at least one United States Coast Guard approved fire extinguisher. Some vessels are required to carry two fire extinguishers. • All vessels from 16 to 40 feet must have a sounding device, such as a horn or whistle. Vessels over 40-feet must have a sounding device and one bell. • Navigation Rules dictate if you are the Stand-on vessel or the Giveway vessel. They also dictate what to do when meeting another vessel head on. Refer to the Missouri Water Patrol website for specifics. • As of January 1, 2005, every person born after January 1, 1984, who operates a vessel on the Lakes of Missouri must possess, on the vessel, a boating safety identification card issued by the Water Patrol Division of the Missouri State Highway Patrol or its agent.

added. “Many people simply drive their boats incorrectly. Just because you can drive a car doesn’t mean you can safely drive a boat. It’s physics and takes into account the movement of the boat, the wind, and other environmental issues. There’s an average of 100,000 boats on the water on major holidays and weekends.” Brian Geier, a Missouri Trooper who patrols the Lake, has seen his share of boaters disobeying the laws. Intoxicated drivers, Geier said, cause the majority of the accidents on the water. Running a close second are those who are inexperienced and who don’t pay attention while driving. “Designating a sober driver drastically cuts down on the number of accidents and injuries,” Beck said. “Also, be familiar with your vessel and how to operate it. Know where you are at on the Lake and let others know where you are going. It happens often where people go out and don’t know how to get back to where they started.” Boats are stopped by Water Patrol for a number of reasons, including wake violations, lighting violations at night, no visible registration and erratic driving that poses an immediate safety threat to

Members only pay for fuel if required. The $200 Unlimited Gold Membership assists boaters stranded on the Lake and also provides dock to dock service. To ensure safety for yourself, your passengers and other boaters, take the time to learn your boat and how to best handle the waves. Pay attention to your surroundings and other vessels. ing 2.5 hours a week reduces your risk of a heart attack by up to 40 percent, which for any avid golfer should be well attainable with just one or two rounds of golf per week, depending if you ride a cart or walk. The mental health aspects of golf can’t be overlooked either, especially over the last two-plus years of the pandemic. The social nature of golf, even during the last few years, has been one of the few places you could physically have some social interaction with others without having to wear a mask. Lack of social interaction can lead to depres-

sion, anxiety, stress and other mental health issues. Playing golf outside in the fresh air has been proven by numerous studies to help alleviate stress and will restore and rejuvenate your mind from mental fatigue. I believe the social nature of the game spurred a resurgence in the popularity of the game over the past couple of years. People were locked in their homes for days and months on end without interacting with others besides via Zoom, increasing the popularity of golf. People started flocking to the golf course to see friends, interact and be

olf is inherently not thought of as a strenuous workout, so what kinds of health benefits can you actually get? Most sports like football, basketball and tennis are considered high-impact sports. Golf, on the other hand, is low impact but actually has many health benefits high-impact sports don’t have. Golf is especially beneficial if you walk, but riding in a cart can also provide some necessary and beneficial long-term health benefits. The low impact workout of golf is much kinder on your joints and can lead to a lifetime of enjoyment. Golf’s health benefits can continue throughout your lifetime where those high-impact sports we loved as kids will not. The motion of the golf swing can keep your body active and your muscles stretched and strong to prevent nagging injuries in your back and joints as we age. If you walk and play you can expect to walk anywhere from three to six miles, and you can burn anywhere between 350 to 475 calories each hour you play. With every swing you make, you are using and testing your arms, back and core muscles. Most players will make between 30 and 50 full swings in 18 holes, and this coinciding with walking will be a great full body workout. By playing golf and staying physically fit you will be able to play into your senior years. Studies have proven golf lowers hip fractures by 35 to 68 percent in older people. Diabetes is lowered by 30 to 40 percent and stroke potential is lowered by 20 to 35 percent. Walk-

Golf courses may not have been on the front lines of the pandemic, like healthcare workers, police and others directly involved in curbing and curing the virus, but we believe we played a vital role in the mental health of many. We provided a safe space for them to enjoy the outdoors, interact with friends and clear their minds of daily stress. Golf provided that outlet for stress and anxiety and hopefully we helped a lot people deal with the daily grind in a more positive and meaningful fashion. Golf also mentally challenges you and keeps your brain sharp. You must keep focused, plan moves and execute strategies. By keeping your mind active, you focus more on your game and less on things that are stressful or sad. Playing golf releases “feel good” endorphins to combat anxiety and depression. A 2009 Swedish study concluded that golfers have an increased life expectancy of about five years. Golfers came to the course to get away from the pressures of life and in turn helped their mental and physical wellbeing in the process. Now that the pandemic is in the rear view mirror, golfers continue to head to the course for fun, relaxation, social interaction and a healthier lifestyle. What are you waiting for? Located 15 minutes from the strip, in an exclusive golf community in Henderson, Nev., this property is home to professional athletes, politicians, musicians and more. Designed by Robert Trent Jones and son Robert in 1998 it has matured into the place to live and play for the who’s who of Las Vegas. With more than 70 golf courses that call Las Vegas home, there is a plethora of courses to choose from offering everything from high-end, forecaddie-required masterpieces to the daily fee value-player courses, and everything in between. Top Golf Las Vegas is also an option. Centrally located on the strip it makes for a great distraction from the casino floor. The shows are once again thrilling guests, and the casino floors are buzzing with action. If you have never been to Vegas or haven’t been since the pandemic it is open and welcoming. New activities, shows and experiences are opening weekly. I love the golf, the people watching and excitement of Vegas, so do yourself a favor and visit and enjoy. Vegas is back baby! I

f you are looking for a great golf vacation with your buddies, look no further than Las Vegas. I was there recently and Vegas is definitely back and better than ever after COVID. The strip is alive, mask mandates have ended, the shows are up and running, and golf courses are spectacular. I have been able to play some fantastic golf courses over the past several years in Vegas and here are my recommendations for a special trip. If you stay at a MGM property you have the opportunity to play Shadow Creek. The course that Steve Wynn built for $60 million dollars in 1989 is now affiliated with the MGM properties and is only available to play by members and MGM guests. The Tom Fazio designed course was built by moving three million cubic yards of earth and 20,000 trees were brought in to create this manmade masterpiece. Shadow Creek has hosted the PGA Tour CJ Cup and last year’s Bryson DeChambeau vs. Brooks Koepka match made for television. The price is upward of $600 and if you can afford the price tag it is worth the trip. Another course on a similar level is Cascata. Opened in 2000, Cascata was designed by Rees Jones to revival Shadow Creek. Its dramatic elevation changes and encounters with the Big Horn Sheep that call Cascata home make for wonderful pictures and memories that will last a lifetime. A price tag to match its beauty, ranks this course another must play. You can also take a lesson from famed instructor Butch Harmon at Cascata’s sister course Rio Secco. Rio Secco, another Rees Jones design, opened in 1997 and makes the perfect complement for a wonderful two-day golf trip. Las Vegas Country Club is right on the Vegas strip and has some great history in the desert. Opened in 1967 the club hosted 19 PGA and Ladies Professional Golf Association tournaments with winners such as Greg Norman, Davis Love, Paul Azinger and Lorena Ochoa. The club’s members early on included Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra. It was the place to be seen in the 70’s as celebrities, gangsters, high rollers and even presidents were commonly on the links. A unique feature of the club is the Cessna plane that sits in the pond adjacent to the 10th green. In 1981, during an FBI surveillance operation of mafia activity at the club, the plane would fly over the club. One day it ran out of gas, landed on the 10th fairway, missed some golfers, and ended up in the pond. New ownership at the club recently purchased the exact replica and placed it in the lake with

Her positive attitude and dedication to her job is what makes her among the best. “I just really enjoy having regular customers where I know their name and what they order,” she said. “But I also enjoy new faces and helping them have the best trip at the Lake by recommending things and just having fun with them at the restaurant.” Conrad has been married for 16 years and “has three beautiful daughters.” One daughter is 16 years of age and the other two are 13-year-old twins. She’s been waitressing since she was 18 years old. There are many aspects of her job she enjoys. “Honestly, the people I work with are so awesome and the people who come here to eat usually become close friends,” she explained. “It’s an awesome atmosphere for both workers and customers in my opinion.”

Dog Days Bar and Grill

Dog Days Bar and Grill is a Barrett brothers’ property. Its kitchen is overseen by Kevin McCowan and has been for eight years. McCowan is the chef who created five different nacho platters that have become five Lake favorites. McCowan believes Dog Days’ nachos have the WOW factor. Fresh ingredients deliver intense flavors in large, shareable sizes. Every order begins with corn tortillas, topped with chili con queso, shredded Jack cheese, and one of five flavor profiles, including BBQ pork, jalapeño, and house-made barbecue sauce. A second version stars jerk chicken, a third adds more spice with buffalo chicken, and a fourth features seafood. Traditional beef is on the menu, too. Chef McCowan’s goal is to be sure diners receive value for the price paid. Instead of subtracting menu items due to current supply chain challenges, Chef has added spices and sauces that delivers the tastes customers expect. He also keeps an eye on food trends. Dog Days now features a keto-friendly, low-carb Marsala steak bite, for example — another quality choice at Dog Days.

Best Golf Course

Old Kinderhook Resort, Golf Club & Spa

A variety of things make Old Kinderhook unique. Once you drive through the front gates and down the hill, the valley opens up and several holes are visible including 1, 2, 4, 16 and 17. “Most people who have never been here before are impressed right away from a visual standpoint,” Jason Woods, Head Golf Pro, said. “I think what makes the golf course unique is the playability of the course. For the most part the fairways are generously wide, and the greens are large and receptive. We’ve always been known for the conditions of the golf course. The fairways are usually flawless, and the greens are always in great shape.” Their Stay and Play packages are popular and have really taken off since they opened the hotel. They had lodging options before that but with the opening of the Lodge it seems more and more popular every year. The great thing about Old Kinderhook is that once you check in guests don’t really need to leave the property. Depending on the lodging option they choose, everything is within walking distance. Cabins are right across the street from the Golf Shop, Hook Café and The Trophy Room. The front door to the Lodge is located less than 100 yards from the Golf Shop and Hook Café. “We strive to be the best golf resort and golf course we can. We try to anticipate our guests needs. We encourage guests to keep their clubs on the carts and always have them ready for the next day. We try to keep groups really organized and provide groups with assistance with pairings, on course events and scoring,” Woods continued. “The Lake of the Ozarks has always been a ‘buddy trip’ destination and we’ve tried to capitalize on that and really take care of the groups who come down, and not only who stay with us, but also groups who are just playing that day.” He is proud that the golf course is one of the best conditioned courses at the Lake area, and that the grounds staff are all incredibly knowledgeable and have a great sense of pride in keeping the course in great shape.

It's a fun job but I wish it paid more. I'm driving Uber and working at Wonderland Camp and Jeff is selling plasma. Both of us have been in radio for more than 30 years and working together for about 20 years because nobody else will hire us.” — Mike Clayton “What makes us The Best? Years ago Tina Turner wrote a song about our show that sums it all up. A little something called ‘Private Dancer.’ Of course since then we've been coasting. What was the question? How long have we been in radio? Mike and I started in something the kids call ‘Vaudeville.’ Mike was a Juggler and I was a Ventriloquist Dummy and we just hit it off. What was the question?” — Jeff Karr Catch The Big Show on 92.7 FM Monday-Friday from 6–10 a.m.

With 4,000 square feet indoors and a 2,000+ square foot outdoor patio coming soon, Lake Life Outdoor Furniture has the space for customers to test furniture for comfort and style in 3D. Customers don’t have to guess while looking at a photo. That’s just one way owners Jesse Witt and Lexi Keeney provide for a great customer experience. Another way is in their choice of product. People want to spend their time on the water, docks, or decks, not cleaning before they have some fun. Furniture from Lake Life Outdoor Furniture helps them to do just that. Made of durable polymer, the furniture only needs washed — no scrubbing or extra product required. The inventory was selected to hold up in Missouri’s inclement weather. Polymer is heavy and will not blow over. Finally, Witt and Keeney have kept the varying rail heights in mind. They can help owners choose pieces that will not block their views of the Lake and surrounding hills. 34 lakenewsonline.com

They are a meat, seafood and grocery store offering plenty of specialty items, including Ozark Grillers, Armadillo Eggs, Flat Iron Steaks, 40 different styles of sausage from Breakfast to Cadillac summer sausage pepper incrusted, to gummy bear bratwurst. “And, yes, gummy bears were harmed in the making of the sausage… and much more!” joked owner, Chris Stevens. “Anymore, people are struggling with getting employees. Here at The Butcher Shop, we have the best employees at the Lake. They go out of their way to get what you want for a breakfast, lunch, or dinner of two or a catering of 200. No order too big or too small at The Butcher Shop. We are the best because we start with the best product, and we have been here going on 30 years.” He also noted that it's more than a butcher shop. There are 50 plus different barbecue sauces, and a wide variety of meats including chicken, beef, pork, elk, buffalo, camel, kangaroo and certified Wagyu Beef. Amy Kolb would be the last person to sing her own praises.WINNER She attributes her success to the entire Kolb Auto Sales team, especially Vince Kolb, her father. Amy is grateful for her father’s example. He built a successful business with “nicer, newer, and affordable pre-owned cars” and encouraged her to share in it. She accepted the opportunity and has worked by his side for 13 years. Both father and daughter believe character and reputation count on and off the car lot. Amy adds that those values are reasons so many customers return when they need to buy, sell, trade, or consign another car. She plans to continue building that repeat customer base by showing respect for all while meeting customer needs with nice, pre-owned cars, SUVs, and trucks.

Best RV Dealer

Mike and Charles Hill are the owners of the popular Quality RV dealership in Linn Creek. Christen Noble is responsible for advertising, and she said her father, Charles, started the business in 1977. “We offer no hidden fees, no pressure sales and extremely competitive pricing,” she noted. “We have people drive from all over the United States for our deals.” She explains that they are very low pressure and never stuffy. They are extremely laid back and very honest and up front before each sale. “We want to make sure each customer understands every step of the process, and being a smaller dealer means we have the one-on-one time to explain everything,” she continued. Charlie has been in the RV industry since he was 16 and will soon be 72. This means he has 57 years of knowledge. He loves to relive some of the memories and enjoys sharing fun stories from the beginning days of RVing.

Best Marine Interiors Hytech Auto Trim Scott Bullock, owner of Hytech Auto Trim, opened the business in 2020 in Osage Beach. This came after the opening of the St. Louis area location 22 years ago. Bullock has over 30 years of experience in the automotive and marine after market. What began as a business that only did custom boat interiors has grown to include a variety of services. Hytech provides everything from minor seat repair to complete interior replacements. They’ve grown into the marine flooring business, and also offer window tinting for cars, trucks, boats and homes in addition to Truce accessories. Contributing to their reputation and success, Bullock said, is being ahead of the game. “We pride ourselves on thinking outside the box and providing the best quality product on the market,” he said. “I always say we are so lucky getting to work on boats, cars and trucks because this is our hobby and sport. We love it and we are very passionate about what we do.”

Once Charlie Corbett introduces himself to customers, he’ll let them do the talking. He wants to learn how they enjoy being on the water. Some prefer speed and sports. Others like cruising and coving more. Corbett knows Kelly’s Port has the inventory to meet both preferences and much more. Bennington’s boats provide space for large groups to cruise comfortably, but if some onboard love to ski or wakeboard, a Bennington delivers speed on the water to give them a thrill. Another Kelly’s Port brand, Regal, builds bowriders known for speed. Tiara, represented at the Lake by Kelly’s Port, specializes in luxurious amenities on Tiara yachts. Tiara also offers the largest outboard-powered yacht manufactured for 2021. Charlie will help customers choose from these styles and brands to make their on-the-water dreams come true. Corbett gives credit for his recognition to the entire Kelly’s Port team offering financing, followup maintenance, repairs when needed, gas service, storage, and slips. Charlie will tell anyone that he could not succeed alone. He needs the whole team, and he’s grateful for them.

Best Family Practice

Amazing. Awesome. Wonderful. These are a few of the words patients use when describing Lake Regional Family Medicine Physician Christine Livek, M.D. Her patients praise her because she listens to them, treats them with respect and shows them she cares. Dr. Livek says she learned from the best. “My inspiration comes from Dr. Robert Mason, one of Lake Regional’s founding fathers,” she says. “I try to imitate how he practiced by being accessible to my patients, giving them the time they need and caring deeply. Basically, I always strive to treat patients the way that I would want to be treated.” Born and raised at the Lake of the Ozarks, Dr. Livek has cared for patients at Lake Regional Clinic – Lake Ozark since 2015. She began her career as a nurse, became a nurse practitioner and then, wanting to do even more for her patients, pursued her medical degree to become a physician in 2013. “Dr. Livek excels at putting patients at the center of her attention,” says Apryl Welch, R.N., manager of Lake Regional Clinic – Lake Ozark. “Her patients know she will focus on them and truly listen to them. She is an exceptionally compassionate provider.”

Kurtis and Kate Quinton have owned and operated Fort Knox Alarm and Security since 2019. In just 2.5 years, they have earned the Lake’s trust in both their products and services. One reason for the Quinton’s award is that phones at Fort Knox are always on and answered 24/7. The Fort Knox goal is to respond quickly and troubleshoot for clients. In fact, excellent service is the Quinton’s primary goal because prompt, quality service means customers will return as their needs for equipment change. Fort Knox provides security equipment, installation, and service for CCTV cameras, home and business intrusion systems, residential fire alarm systems, boat lift and RV alert systems, and monitoring. There is a security camera for every situation, even chicken coops. If clients need to focus on faces, read license plates, or identify animals invading properties, there’s a camera equipped with video analytics filters to meet those needs. Equally important is a line of products secure against hacking, a feature that sets Fort Knox above the rest.

“We have used Ashley carpet cleaning every year since we moved to the lake. We highly recommend him. He is very efficient and does a great job. Everything is moved and cleaned with protectors inserted under the furniture. I’m really not sure how he does this by himself! Very nice guy!” – Barbara Mayberry “I have used Ashley Carpet many times in my personal home, as well as, referring them to clients. As a real estate agent, it is wonderful to have a professional who is reliable and does a great job.” – Rhonda Lettow

The couple are always growing and training their staff. Knowing their employees are the backbone of their business, they are always looking for team building opportunities. “There’s so much importance in knowing the surfaces you are working with and the appropriate cleaners to use,” Tonya explained. “We have a phenomenal staff that isn’t afraid to get the job done.” Proud members of the AHCA (American House Cleaners Association), they are firm believers that everyone deserves a clean home. They provide Servant Heart cleans for either a deeply discounted price or usually free of charge. Best Real Estate AgenT She’s not just selling real estate. It’s about showcasing the community and sharing a love for living the “lake life” to the fullest. Nikki Sorenson joined EXP/Swift & Co. Realty in 2020 and has been smashing real estate goals ever since. “I definitely do not fit the normal realtor stereotype, nor do I ever want to. I feel that anyone who meets me (on or off the water) can tell I'm genuine and that instantly makes people comfortable and puts them at ease,” she said. “My reputation is everything, so if someone doesn't feel I have their best interest at heart, then we both lose.” After the pandemic hit, there has been a spotlight on Lake of the Ozarks and the real estate market has been booming ever since. “This has been a definite blessing for us as realtors,” Nikki said. “Now the prime waterfront inventory that people crave is at an all-time low. So we find ourselves with a multitude of buyers fighting to get in, when most people would rather not leave the Lake or list their property.”

2. How does the process work?

At the end of January every year, the nomination process opens. Readers fill in the businesses they want to recognize in each category on the online survey. There are about 130 categories within the survey. During the nomination process readers are asked to come back daily to nominate. The top 5 businesses that get the most nominations in each category will advance to the final round. Those businesses will be listed on the survey in the final round. The top two vote-getters within each category in the final round will be recognized. 3. I’d like to add a category/question.

Every year we get a lot of suggestions to add categories. We consider each one, although we cannot include them all. We always welcome feedback. Please email us if you have any suggestions for 2023 or questions about the process: charis.lakesun@gmail.com.

Diamond in the Rough A FUNCTIONAL, COMFORTABLE AND RELAXED LAKE HOME TRANSFORMATION Story by CHARIS PATIRES | Photography by MEL BROOKS/BLUE BOAT ART

W

hen Jeff and Amanda DeWit walk into a home renovation project they don’t see problems, they see solutions. Their vision is what has caught the eye of many homeowners who need a complete overhaul, especially in a real estate market where second homeowners find themselves buying “project homes.” That was the case for Chesterfield resident Sharon Schloss. For years Sharon would visit Lake of the Ozarks frequently with her family and dreamed of owning her own place. During COVID she began looking around and found a property off of Horseshoe Bend but it needed work. Luck would have it that her realtor knew just the right people and Sharon reached out to Jeff and Amanda DeWit at 11 North Custom Services. “Everything needed to be ripped out and changed,” Sharon said. “Jeff came in and he had all of these ideas." 82 lakenewsonline.com

Trust was a big factor in hiring the right company for the job, Sharon said. Working as a CPA at a firm in Clayton, Sharon had to trust whoever she hired to keep the project moving forward without much supervision. “I never in my wildest imagination thought that they could take what it was before and make it so beautiful and comfortable,” she said. “I expected it to be nice but they made it happen. They were easy to work with.” Jeff met with Sharon to establish the scope of the project. The house was in rough shape and needed a complete overhaul. From there, Amanda and Sharon met to establish the look. “We kept in mind how she would be using the home and her hopes for it once completed,” Amanda said. “It really was a diamond in the rough. With careful planning and lots of work, Sharon's Lake retreat turned into a truly special place.”

The house is small but mighty. It has 1,350 square feet that is now all usable living space. Originally it was two bedrooms but now has four. Sharon says when she was looking for a Lake home, she didn’t want anything big, but big enough. The challenge was taking the existing space and making it everything Sharon wanted it to be, Amanda said. Older Lake homes come with many surprises during construction so wiring, plumbing and framework had to be redone. The Lake-facing side of the house was rotted and needed to be replaced which meant bringing in house jacks to secure the roofline. Old triangle windows were replaced with modern transoms and a 12-foot slider door takes advantage of the Lake view.

Decor is comfortable and relaxed with cushy seating, layered textiles, and interesting pieces, all while keeping it clean and airy. A mix of high and low-end pieces come from stores such as Crate and Barrel, Marshalls/Homegoods in Osage Beach, and even some accessories from Bear Market and Off the Hook. “I love searching for one-of-a-kind items that add something special to a home,” Amanda said. A couple of sentimental pieces that were important to Sharon, like this credenza located to the left of the fireplace, was incorporated into the design.

A Secluded Community In the Heart of Four Seasons

For the fireplace, Amanda wanted to add a unique focal point. Jeff used a board and batten treatment on the top, added a stacked stone with colors that coordinate with the kitchen, and finished it with a douglas fir mantle.

The house was lightened up by using Sherwin Williams Snowbound, a versatile, creamy white paint, all over. The overall color scheme included light chalky blues, including a kitchen island in Sherwin Williams Stardew, natural wood tones, and pops of navy and peach. The flooring was kept light but added warmth and interest. A Shaw Luxury Vinyl Plank provided the look and durability needed for a lakefront home.

The bathrooms both have a coastal feel, but have their own personality with fun vanities, lighting and tile selections. This space (right) was originally a closet for the master bedroom. After some reconfiguration it was turned into another functional bedroom.

The home has 100 feet of lakefront, a large dock and plenty of desk space for outdoor living during the summer. It has a fantastic view of the four mile marker. A new screen enclosure on the patio was made on the lower level. Just behind the door is an area that served as a storage space but was turned into a bunkroom. Everybody likes how private and quiet it is. (seen in middle photo, at right, on page 89)

Jeff grew up with construction experience and always enjoyed fabrication and woodworking. He established 11 North in 2016 when he started managing construction projects, including new builds and remodeling. The husband and wife team at 11 North specializes in whole-home remodels as well as providing full-service design. Amanda, who worked in the private sector as a graphic designer joined the company full time in 2021. “I threw myself into learning all I could about materials, finishes, flooring, fabrics and so much more,” Amanda said. “That happened because we quickly realized our customers needed help selecting materials that would not only update their space, but look great together while still coordinating with the rest of their home.” Amanda’s mom is an interior painter and operated a bed and breakfast in her home growing up. “I grew up going to job sites and keeping guest rooms beautiful,” she said. “Having the opportunity to build a business with my husband where our skills complement each other so perfectly has been so rewarding.”

Inspired Leader A CONVERSATION WITH LAKE REGIONAL’S NEW CEO, KEVIN MCROBERTS Story by ANITA HARRISON

F

PROVIDED PHOTOS

or 22 years, Kevin McRoberts, FACHE, has had a singular focus: Grow Lake Regional Health System. Now Lake Regional’s CEO, McRoberts shares the reason he has dedicated his career to local health care. “My goal to help the health system grow comes from my desire to meet the needs of the community,” he says. “We all have loved ones and neighbors who in the past would have to leave the community to seek care elsewhere. And, we all know people who vacationed here and retired here, but when they began having health concerns, they returned to the metro area. I’ve been determined to give them a better option. “What you see at Lake Regional today — including our heart program and our cancer program — we have built to meet people’s needs so they will call this community home,” McRoberts says. In the following Q&A, McRoberts shares more about what inspires his vision for Lake Regional.

92 lakenewsonline.com

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAVE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT LAKE REGIONAL’S FUTURE?

We continue to grow and expand, and more people in our service area are choosing Lake Regional. Lake Regional began as a hospital, but today, we are a full health system with clinics and services spread across five counties. For most of our history, our service area was Camden, Miller and Morgan counties. Our expansion into Lebanon has resulted in demand from patients in Laclede and Pulaski counties, effectively doubling the population we’re serving from around 100,000 people to around 200,000 people. Our expansion into these counties is necessary to support the programs and specialties that we want to provide our community. Take our heart program, for example. Before expanding, we couldn’t support two cardiovascularthoracic surgeons. Now we can. That second surgeon adds stability to our heart program, and a strong heart program is a must for many people who would like to call our community home. THE SAME MONTH YOU BECAME CEO, THE WORLD WAS MARKING TWO YEARS OF THE COVID PANDEMIC. HOW HAVE THE LAST TWO YEARS CHANGED LAKE REGIONAL?

Words cannot express the pride I have for what we’ve accomplished together. It’s been a hard two years, but this team has risen to the challenge

and lived our core values of Commit to Each Other, Encourage Excellence and Care More than Expected. As a result, we’ve changed what’s possible for Lake Regional and our community. Throughout the pandemic, other health care providers from across the state looked to us, at how efficiently we were meeting needs and getting things done. From protecting our employees to testing our community to vaccinating our community — nobody did it better. That success brought us attention and accolades, and that reputation has helped us recruit and attract top talent. It’s exciting to see the caliber of caregivers and leaders joining us. People want to be part of a winning team.

We also are expanding our Cancer Center to care for more patients. We’re looking ahead, and we are committed to meeting the needs of our community for decades to come.

LAKE REGIONAL HAS INVITED THE COMMUNITY TO BE A PART OF ITS SUCCESS, TOO, THROUGH SUPPORTING ITS COMMITMENT TO CARING INITIATIVE. WHAT DO YOU WANT READERS TO KNOW ABOUT THEIR ROLE IN ADVANCING LOCAL HEALTH CARE?

LAKE REGIONAL USES THE SLOGAN, “OUR COMMITMENT RUNS DEEP.” WHAT DOES THIS PHRASE MEAN TO YOU?

It’s the work, the calling, the commitment that is on display throughout the health system every day. It’s inspiring to see our team members caring for our patients and for each other. I am proud and humbled to be leading such a remarkable team.

I want people to know this is their health system. Our employees are your friends, neighbors and family members. And, we believe our patients deserve the best. That conviction drives us to continue to build and to strengthen our team and facilities for our community. Our philanthropic initiative, Commitment to Caring, will transform health care delivery in two vitally important services — heart care and

ringing major artists to the Lake area does not come easy. Just ask Tom Abbett and Mary Kay von Brendel, just part of the team behind Ozarks Amphitheater, a 10,256 seat outdoor amphitheater located in Camdenton. By the time musicians take to the 5,000-square-foot stage, months of planning have taken place to make sure each show goes off without a hitch. All that hard work has paid off. This season the venue is hosting its busiest season yet. Ozarks Amphitheater had a rough start for many years after it was built in 1993. It sat vacant for at least five years. Twice owners tried to get the venue up and running but failed. It fell under a state of disrepair until an investor from Colorado decided to revamp it. Bill Carle had experience as a concessionaire at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, along with his business partner Robert Mein who understood the food and beverage side of the business. Carle purchased Ozarks Amphitheater in 2013, renovated it in 2014, opened in 2015, and has been hosting world-class entertainment ever since.

According to Abbett, Director of Business Development at Ozarks Amphitheater, the Alabama concert in 2018 put Lake of the Ozarks on the map both locally and in Nashville as a viable venue. Big-name artists took note and started booking performances at the Lake. Kane Brown, Five Finger Death Punch and Shinedown have been extremely popular for fans at the Lake. Classic rock shows last year included ZZ-Top, REO Speedwagon, Styx and Three Dog Night. Charlie Daniels has played several times as well as Miranda Lambert, Katy Perry and Blues Traveler. The number of shows and events hosted each year varies. In 2022, show organizers anticipate at least 24 shows, up from 17 in 2021. BEHIND THE SCENES Both Abbett and von Brendel, who is the Director of Operations at Ozarks Amphitheater, work to bring bigger names to the venue each year. They collaborate on booking acts, along with co-promoter Mammoth Presents from Kansas City. That partnership started in 2018 with Alabama and has flourished ever since, von Brendel said.

“My goal is for Ozarks Amphitheater to rival Red Rocks as a ‘destination’ and a ‘must-play’ venue for the larger touring acts,” von Brendel said. “We are now in Phase 2 of the business plan working toward expanding parking, capacity, infrastructure and being able to accommodate the larger acts that are on our bucket list.” von Brendel has a background in music, having worked with JazzTrax Music Festivals on Catalina Island and Big Bear, Calif. for several years and being an artist manager for national touring Jazz musicians prior to moving to the Lake area. She tracked down Carle to request the opportunity to bring the Amphitheater back to life after inviting

herself on stage where she sang the National Anthem and was overwhelmed by the amazing acoustics of the venue. “Mary Kay’s drive, creativity and commitment to the community is one of the reasons the venue has gotten to where it is today,” Abbett said. Abbett was in real estate at the Lake before being recruited to work backstage security. As he got more involved in the business, he became stage manager and started booking talent in 2017. “I have a mind for business and a body for manual labor..and it takes both of those to make the venue work,” Abbett jokes. Abbett is involved in the Lake Race, Shootout on the Strip, the Guinness

World Record attempt Boat Parade and many other community-centered events that help promote the area in general. They strive to be ambassadors of the Lake of the Ozarks, making sure that not only do shows run smoothly but that Ozarks Amphitheater has an economic and social impact in the area. The venue has hosted special events including the Dogwood Festival, the Can Am Games Opening Ceremonies, Kelly Miller Circus and its annual events Pumpkin Chunkin’ Palooza and Crossover Music Festival. “We really would like to thank the community for supporting us and having a real interest in its success and growth,” von Brendel said. “Without the community’s support we would not have been able to grow to where we have, and we look forward to many more years of live entertainment at Lake of the Ozarks.”

to change). The show ends about 11 p.m. with buses rolling out about 1 a.m. after tearing down and loading up equipment for the next gig. About 150 people are employed for each show from increased security to emergency services and other crew. The season runs from April to October. Amphitheater capacity is 10,256 dedicated seats with 2,556 in the lower bowl and 7,700 in the upper seating area, plus 2,000-3,000 on the lawn. The venue sells shows to 6,300 seats and sells every other row in the upper section due to limited parking. They are working to expand parking from 2,000 to 2,500 cars in order to go up to 7,500 capacity in 2023. There are premium seating options on the Party Deck and a Quirk Premium Tent that has fourtop tables, pit access, dedicated wait staff and bar, and premium parking. Concessions offers a full line of beverages, wines, mixed drinks and a full menu.

UNIQUE, HANDCRAFTED ITEMS HELP OVERSEAS MISSION Story by CHARIS PATIRES

The organization provides help with education, healthcare and community projects at 12 mission sites in southwest Haiti. Haitian Episcopal Learning Programs started in the 1970s by a group from the Kansas City area. At first, Kathy started bringing the metal art home in her suitcase after returning home from a mission trip. “Due to Covid-19 I now order using e-mail to communicate directly with the artists,” Kathy said. “Over the years I have gotten to know the artists. They send me messages every day just to see how I am. They are mainly young, with young families of their own. This IS their income. Their only income. The artists take pride in their work. It is what they know how to do and do well.”

A BACKGROUND IN ART

Kathy was born in St. Louis where she taught elementary education. “In one of my master’s classes I had the privilege to hear the Director of the Harlem School of the Arts speak about how important it is to have a ‘passionate pursuit’ for what you teach. I couldn’t agree more. It is what made it exciting for me, as well as for my students,” she said. Dave worked in transportation in Knoxville, Tenn. and later served as general manager of shortline railroads. Having visited Lake of the Ozarks all her life, and more frequently when her parents built a home in Rocky Mount in 1976, the couple decided to retire at the Lake in 2016. “I have always loved art, both in

s a retired teacher, Kathy Peironnet understands the importance of education. For the last 14 years, Kathy and her husband Dave have been actively working in Camp Perrin, Haiti where they’ve helped build a church, rectory and opened a school using donations from private citizens, as well as money earned from the sale of handcrafted, hammered metal decor made in the village of Noailles, Haiti. Artisans in the village take old, discarded oil drums, burn them out, flatten them, and cut intricate designs using hand tools. Through her business KAT Tracks, Kathy sells these pieces and adds her own creations of jewelry, dyed fabrics, pillowcases, bottle lights and paintings. All proceeds go to the mission in Haiti.

studio and in galleries and museums, Kathy said. “I started making jewelry to match my clothes and also represent what I was teaching that day. The next thing you know I had people asking me to make them some. In 1996 I started selling at the Sunday Art Market in City Market in Kansas City.” Today Kathy makes beaded jewelry (primarily earrings), hand-dyed fabrics including cotton table and kitchen linens, silk scarves, and clothing. Everything she creates is unique. She paints with watercolors, acrylics and pastels on canvas/paper or unusual objects such as guitars and violins. “I have always been a lifelong learner,” she said. “If I saw an offering that interested me, I would enroll in it. Before retiring from teaching, I attended classes in pottery, painting, drawing, sewing, and shibori (Japanese fabric dying). I also became a snow ski instructor and a scuba diver.”

ON A MISSION

In 2007, Kathy and Dave’s church in Kansas City hosted an informational meeting about a mission in Haiti. The following year they traveled there on a medical mission and assisted physicians with various tasks. “Some days I taught art to the children while they waited for their turn at the clinic. To say the Haitians stole my heart would be the truth,” she said. “The smiles on childrens’ faces tell you how happy they are to be in school.

Kathy also sells her own handmade jewelry, dyed fabrics, and other items. The money she makes goes to help provide education, healthcare and fund community projects in Camp Perrin, Haiti.

Rocky Mount resident Kathy Peironnet sells metal artwork and other items made by Haitian residents at Lake area farmers markets and craft shows. The sale of these items provide income to the artisans who live in a country with 80 percent unemployment.

They wear uniforms, which may be their very best set of clothes. The adults are gracious and love to hear you practice your Haitian Creole, as they practice their English on you. If you visit a home, it is an extreme honor for them.” In Haiti, there is 80 percent unemployment and there are no government agencies to offer assistance like there are in the United States. The hammered metal art that Kathy brings to local shows is made in the Village of Noailles, outside of Croix des Bouquets near Port-au-Prince where discarded metal oil drums are plentiful. They are cleaned and flattened to be used to create décor, yard art, or table pieces. The artists draw their designs often with chalk, cutting intricate patterns using nothing more than handtools, chisels and hammers. Detail is added with specialized

metal awls. This art form is often passed down for generations by fathers or uncles, although there are a few female metal artists emerging. Thanks to her efforts, the St. Mathias Episcopal Church and School in Camp Perrin, Haiti was able to hire five teachers, a groundskeeper, an interpreter, and two cooks. Children are being fed lunch which is essential to learning.

More Info Kathy will have a booth set up at the Camdenton Farmers Market on the Square Saturdays from 7 a.m.-12 p.m. starting May 21. kattracks6204@yahoo.com Lake Lifestyles Magazine

hen Krysten Smith opened Split Arrow Boutique on the Bagnell Dam Strip in 2016 she really wanted to start a business she could pass down to her daughter. What transpired is a place where women feel comfortable walking through the doors and can get help finding something trendy. Now 10-years old Krystin’s daughter loves fashion and could very well follow in her mother’s footsteps. In the mean time, full-timers and visitors can shop for a wide variety of looks. Fringe, outfits with sequence and bling, trousers, and high-waisted jeans with flair or bellbottoms are back in style. The wester/boho fad has been popular for a while now but also flying off the shelves are nightlife fashions that people can wear on a trip to Nashville or Las Vegas. Corral boots and Blenders eyewear are also a customer favorite at the store. New this year is a line of men’s apparel, accessories and bath products. The store carries merchandise from a military-owned company that gives back 5 percent of proceeds to help military charities.

One Delicious PLATE AT A TIME Story by CONNYE GRIFFIN | Photography by AL GRIFFIN

F

oods that feed the eye and satisfy the palate are what diners expect from fine dining. After ordering, there’s time for conversation before those plates of food arrive, and quite often, people linger after their last bite. All of that and more is what Wok-NRoll delivers, one delicious plate at a time. In 2007, when owner and chef Nok Knernschield opened Wok-N-Roll, it was almost a one-woman show. Nok greeted customers, took orders, cooked and served food, then cleaned everything in a tiny space on Bagnell Dam Boulevard. In the intervening 15 years, the restaurant has grown to offer more seating under soft lights glowing against vibrant walls. The kitchen is much larger for better workflow, but Nok still greets newcomers and long-time customers, tosses fresh ingredients into seasoned woks, and monitors the flames as she brings Pad Thai and spicy curries to life. Nok began learning about flavor and kitchens in the family home in Thailand so cooking was a natural career path when she grew old enough to help support her siblings. Working in restaurants,

Nok expanded her palate and skills. She learned about Korean and Indian flavorings, and she liked them all. That’s why Wok-N-Roll’s daily specials have international flair. However, Wok-N-Roll consistently offers menu items customers love. One of them is Nok’s Fried Rice, the restaurant’s signature dish and a variation on traditional fried rice. Nok’s is a mountain of golden rice with translucent onion pieces, bright red and green peppers, and a touch of spice under a cilantro garnish. Most important, it is delicious as are Nok’s Thai Dumplings, another tasty appetizer thanks to Nok’s special talents. Determined to offer good nutrition and complex flavors, Nok blends grains of brown rices for menu items such as Masaman Curry. Customers can still request white rice or a single brown rice grain if they prefer. In fact, customers can make special re-

quests, and if the ingredients are on hand and time is available, Nok will deliver on that request. At all times, customers can choose from vegetarian, GMO-free, and gluten-free options. Most customers trust Nok’s tastes and choices. They have been supporting her restaurant since it opened, and as Nok says, people know quality in ingredients and flavors.

Nok gives credit for her success to her Thai family who initiated her training, but that family has expanded to include the greater Lake community in which Nok has great confidence in spite of challenging days behind and ahead. Nok believes in the Lake’s magnetism. Even as some prices rise, she thinks state residents will travel more right here at home and the Lake season will be among the best. Nok will do what she can to make sure the future is bright for Lake of the Ozarks. She has a long-standing habit of giving back to schools, fire departments, and service projects. They are part of her 106 lakenewsonline.com

extended family as is the restaurant staff. Each one pitches in as needed to paint a vibrant square or stripe on the eye-catching art wall, to wait on customers, or brew another pitcher of fresh, steeped tea. One essential team member is absent, however. Nok’s dear husband, Dennis, passed in 2020. The grief was almost insurmountable, and her heart still misses the man with whom she shared more than three decades of 24/7 togetherness. Her daughter, an attorney in Virginia, helps her carry on with daily communications, but the work Nok and Dennis began in 2007 still calls, still demands, and still provides. Wok-N-Roll is that

business, and Nok carries on with his memory held closely in her heart. Diners are the beneficiaries. Wok-N-Roll is a great restaurant for fine dining in a casual atmosphere on the Boulevard.

The Osage Beach Board of Aldermen this week is expected to put the finishing touches on an ordinance that will rezone 34.1-acres of waterfront to allow for a multifaceted housing development. The board approved first reading of the rezoning request at its April 7 meeting and second reading is on the April 21 agenda. The request is to rezone from A-1 Agriculture and C-1 Commercial to R-1b Single Family and R-3 Multi-Family. The land is located 1,100 feet west of Case Road on the north side of Sycamore Valley Drive. The R1b permits lots of 6,500 or more with single family dwelling units, and the R-3 zone allows for multifamily facilities with one unit per 2,500 square feet of property. Applicant is Jim Nugent Harpers Cove Investment Company. Key partners in the venture plan to subdivide the property into 38 single-family lots (Phase 1) in the R-1b zoned land. Of those, 16 would be lakefront and 22 would

Although the City of Linn Creek would benefit from the development of additional land, forced annexation of a plot in the adjacent unincorporated section of the city was never the plan. In fact, Matt Kostelnik, Economic Development Specialist, said annexation isn’t even the word that applies here. This potential expansion, Matt said, would be voluntary and would mean some properties would be incorporated into the city limits. “I don’t think this is at the top of the city’s list right now. They’re not going to pressure anyone into incorporating. They just wanted people’s thoughts on this idea.” Kostenlik is employed by the Lake of the Ozarks Council of Local Government, and Camden County is in this jurisdiction. He was hired to write a comprehensive plan for the

City of Linn Creek. There is a 3,600-acre parcel of land for sale that touches Linn Creek. If developed, neighboring properties would be incorporated into the city. The positive impact for these properties would be the probability of access to city sewer and water. Kostelnik said that this land basically surrounds the entire city limits. It touches the City of Camdenton along the 54 corridor and extends to Big Surf water park. “We were just curious as to what residents’ thoughts were if the city were to grow,” he explained. A survey was sent asking them if they would be in favor of the expansion and possible improvements to their utilities. In addition, two public meetings were held to gain feedback from the idea. The first, held Jan. 16, was largely attended. The majority of those who attended were against the idea. A second meeting, held March 13, had fewer attendees.

The city, Kostelnik explained, was researching future expansion in the event someone wanted to purchase and develop the property that is for sale. Kostelnik said the research looked at the region as a whole. Since Linn Creek almost touches both the cities of Camdenton and Osage Beach, this would be a good opportunity to fill in the gaps. The land could be used for a number of purposes including housing and commercial development. “When you look at other cities comprehensive plans it’s apparent that Linn Creek would be the prime location for affordable housing for any age,” Kostelnik said. “It’s located right between two larger cities.” Kostelnik stressed that this expansion was just an idea and the goal was to get the input from those who live in the city. “The city wants people to be happy and they want to establish themselves as a family friendly community,” he said.
