From the Editor

MAKING THE MOST OF THE

holiday season

W

e’ve started a new tradition in our household for the holidays. Like many families, we find it hard to keep up with our hectic schedules and put together a Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings. Between working, traveling, grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning up, there’s not much time left to actually relax and enjoy the moments we have together — let alone do any Black Friday shopping (if that even exists this year due to COVID). No matter how many times we would say to each other “we are not going overboard this year,” we’d find ourselves in the same situation and more stressed out than we intended. It doesn’t help that we have an array of dietary restrictions around our dinner table — vegan, diabetic, and meat-eaters — don’t knock Tofurky until you’ve tried cpatires@lakemediaonline.com it…So a couple of years ago we decided to cater most of our Thanksgiving meal. Why hadn’t we done this sooner? There are a few dishes we just have to have, like Mom’s deviled eggs, but it sure takes the pressure off of doing everything and gives you time to focus on what’s truly important during the holiday season. Some people thrive on cooking and entertaining. I envy all those perfectly decorated homes and tablescapes! One of our features in this issue provides some great tips for hosting that holiday gathering, whether it is a Friendsgiving celebration or a more formal holiday dinner party. If you are one to go over-the-top, these tips will give you some time and money-saving ideas for your next get-together. Between all of the hours preparing and executing that holiday party, make sure to do a few of the activities featured in our cover story. Whether you are looking for some alone-time at the spa or a place to take the grandkids, there are some fun and unique things to do inside when the weather turns cooler. As the winter season settles in, the quiet season at the Lake gives us more of a chance to reset and do some of those things on our “to-do” list. For me, that’s Xtreme Bar Bingo and ice skating at Old Kinderhook (what has become another holiday tradition). Wishing you a season filled with peace, gratitude, laughter and joy!

A Winter Float Outdoor enthusiasts celebrate the holidays on the Niangua River

STORY BY CHARIS PATIRES | PHOTOS PROVIDED

utdoor enthusiast Sterling Adams doesn’t let a little bad weather get in the way of spending time on the river so when he decided to head out on Christmas Eve 2016 it was like any other float trip. He managed to convince his son, Daniel, and friend, Sara Casados to come along. The spur-of-the-moment idea has now become an annual tradition. The seven-mile float starts at Bennett Springs where the group spends some time decorating their canoes before pushing away from the shore. Garland-wrapped paddles, red bows tied up at the bow and fully-decorated Christmas trees adorn the canoes on their float down the Niangua River. Some changes were made after the inaugural trip. They’ve moved the float to the first Saturday in December so that the weather is “halfway nice,” and to give them a little leeway to

reschedule if the river is too high in order to get a float in before Christmas. They’ve also added to the decorations that are attached to the canoe. “We started with one Christmas tree the first year and have since added another,” Sterling said. “We are still working on the logistics of brining along a more full-sized tree. Also, we dress up, some more than others.”

Sterling makes a playlist of songs that are synced to a bluetooth speaker, playing everything from Mannheim Steamroller, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, blink-182 and Twisted Sister. Depending on who is going and what type of gear is needed, sometimes they will use an outfitter for shuttle service and equipment.

“I always take my own canoe because I bring along a fire pit and wood and have a fire going in my canoe as we float down the river,” Sterling said. The fire is used for ambiance and to cook on. Food is an important part of any float trip. For Sterling, they like to pack something different. One year they tried sausage marshmallow shish kabobs.

“These did not go over well,” he recalls. The next year baconwrapped slices of Spam were “not too bad.” Not surprisingly, last year’s Spaghetti O’s mixed with crickets and pepperoni, and the cricket and gummy bear pizza was “easily our worst idea yet,” he said. Thankfully popcorn cooked over the fire is always on hand. Sterling says they are “definitely outdoors people,” hiking, camping and floating along rivers in Missouri and Arkansas. They

float year-round, often getting their first trip of the year done by February. At the Lake, Ha Ha Tonka has been a favorite hiking spot where he’s found a few geocaches in the area. “One of the reasons that I enjoy floating is that it’s just nice to get away from the city life for a day or so. It’s kind of like taking a drive in the country, but way better,” he said. “A good portion, but not all of our trips, are usually planned to avoid crowds. Whether it be by the time of year, section of river floated, time of launching or a combination of any of those.” Picking a favorite river is tough but Serling says the Current River, especially the Baptist Camp to Akers section, and the Marble to Marshall section of the Kings River in Arkansas tops his list.

inter is coming, but that doesn’t mean your game has to go into hibernation. The LOZ Golf Lounge, featuring two Trackman 4 simulators, officially opened in September in Osage Beach. Located inside Wicked Willie’s Sports Grill, the golf lounge is open daily from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Adam Demark and a team of investors had a vision and an idea several years ago, and today it has become a reality. Adam has a passion for golf and for helping others improve their golf games as well as their lives. This passion for helping others is part of the mission of the LOZ Golf Lounge as 25 percent of revenue will go to support EQUIP2SERVE. EQUIP2SERVE is a

small nonprofit organization with one driving purpose — to raise up, train, equip, and mobilize West African pastors to impact and minister to unreached people surrounding them. Work on your game with Trackman’s stateof-the-art technology or play a round with your friends at over 63 courses, featuring such gems as St. Andrews, Glen Abbey, Quail Hollow, PGA National and St. Louis’ own Bellevrive Country Club (host of the 100th PGA Championship). Test your skills at some of the finest courses in the world in the comfort of the lounge. Watch your favorite sporting event on the big screen as you play and forget about the chilly air of winter.

Holiday Shopping and Events Tour Unique gifts, things to do and excursions this season

T

his year is a little different, begging the question “what will we do this holiday season?” It’s the year for new traditions and new adventures. We refuse to believe that Christmas is canceled, so by making a few phone calls to communities throughout Missouri we’ve found a couple of spots that are hosting events and have shopping opportunities to get you into the Christmas spirit. What if you had a spot for a 40 foot Christmas tree? Well, the Governor of Missouri looks for just such a tree each year. This special tree is chosen from 10-20 applicants, pictures and submissions each year. There

14

LAKE LIFESTYLES // NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020

are specifications which must be fulfilled for the desired tree. Primarily, it must look like a Christmas tree. Last year’s tree was donated by a couple from Salem, Mo. Measuring at 45-feet tall, the tree had become too large for the space at their home so it was donated and sat on full display on the Governor’s lawn in Jefferson City. The tree is placed the Monday after Thanksgiving in time for the mansion’s holiday celebrations. The tree lighting ceremony is the first Friday in December (this year it is December 4). The Missouri Department of Conservation has sourced trees for the Governor’s Mansion and lawn for more than 30 years.

Coinciding with the tree lighting ceremony, Jefferson City will have the “Living Windows” event along High Street, from Jefferson to Adams. You will view the charm of downtown, enjoy refreshments, a visit from Santa with live reindeer, carolers, a live nativity, carriage rides and so much more. Even though social distancing is advised, there will be many strolling the streets to experience the holiday from 6-9 p.m. About 30 miles from the Lake area, Warsaw has a delightful holiday agenda with Christmas at the Harbor December 11 & 12. A parade is held right down Main Street flanked by beautiful trees wrapped in lights. While you are in the area, Warsaw is known for great antique shopping. There are more than 30 locallyowned unique shops including thrift stores, flea markets, boutiques and quilt stores, to ensure you can find that special item on your shopping list. After your busy day, visit The Yellow Deli, located in the downtown area. You’ll enjoy a great view of the Osage Arm of Lake of the Ozarks and the best bowl of chili. Franklin County is just over an hour from the Lake area. They will begin their holiday celebration with the Cole Camp’s Christbaumfest — a Christmas tree festival, along with quality crafts, music and a visit with Santa Claus. There is expected to be over 50 local craft booths to begin (or finish) your holiday shopping. Check out the chamber’s website for a full schedule of events during the month of December.

Each year, the Governor’s Mansion is decked out for the holidays which includes a 40-foot Christmas tree set up on the lawn for visitors to see. PROVIDED BY JEFFERSON CITY CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU

Saint Charles, about three hours from the Lake, has always been a favorite destination during the holiday season. The Saint Charles Christmas Traditions Festival transforms the town into a winter wonderland. From November 27-December 24 step back into a Charles Dickens old-world charm with horse-drawn

carriage rides and Victorian carolers. More than 125 unique shops, specialty food and lots of other activities and events makes it the perfect destination for the holiday season. (www.discoverstcharles. com/events/christmas-traditions). Since Ste. Genevieve is about a four hour drive from the Lake, a weekend getaway is the best way to visit. It’s a small community with a unique French heritage and they are not bashful about sharing a full agenda of cultural programs and events. Historic walking tours are held Friday through Sunday where a guide shares the history of their community from the early settlers to the historic cemetery. Their Holiday Christmas Festival is always held the first full weekend in December. Live music, colonial decorations, caroling, an art show, downtown shops serving refreshments, and a tree lighting ceremony takes place. With unique boutiques, art galleries, handcrafted gifts, wine, clothing, jewelry and antiques it’s definitely a place you can shop til’ you drop. Closer to home, within a two hour drive, the City of Sedalia starts off the season on Thanksgiving Day with the “Light Up Liberty” drive through light display at the Liberty park.

Sedalia doesn’t want you to miss sharing in the holidays with the family. There are many holiday events planned this year. Breakfast with Santa is December 5. Santa and his elves hide candy canes all around the park for a Candy Cane Hunt on December 9. Pizza and PJs with Santa is December 11. Cookies with the Clauses is December 18, and the Jingle Bell Run is on December 19. On December 7, participating businesses will host an Art Walk — the perfect opportunity to get a little shopping done. New this year is the Elf Workshop held December 6 from 1-5 p.m. Children in grades 4-6 can choose from 20 different homemade gifts to make for family members. Gifts will be made, wrapped and tagged before you leave. Our final suggestion on the holiday shopping and events tour is Springfield. New this year, The Galley’s Holiday Pop Up Shop (220 E. Walnut St.) opened in October and runs through December 31. Held Tuesday-Sunday, it features 16 local artists ranging from woodworking to painting and mixed media. It gives artists the opportunity to sell their work in a time where COVID has forced the cancellation of many events. Officials are finalizing plans for a Small Business Saturday event to take place Downtown. It will feature 25 artists and crafters from Springfield. Plans are also ongoing for the annual Festival of Lights/ Christmas Parade.

Explore Sedalia Make the Katy Depot Visitor Center the first stop on your Sedalia adventure. • Collect all the Flat Cat Cards • Tour a mysterious castle • Stroll through Liberty Rose Garden • Make the ‘hook’em horns’ symbol with bronze statues at Trails End • View works of master contemporary artists • Stroll downtown, enjoy an historic hotel lobby where the past meets the present

or the past 26 years, my family has been vacationing at the Lake. Every June, we would spend glorious days boating, floating, fishing and enjoying the restaurants on the water. This past April, we made the long overdue decision to purchase a Lake home of our own. For the first time, we have the opportunity to experience all four seasons at the Lake, and that includes winter. The boat will be winterized, it will be too cold to sit on the dock, swimming is out of the question, and some of our favorite lakefront restaurants will be closed. So what is there to do? After some research, I discovered there are plenty of options. It doesn’t look like we will get board anytime soon…

Taking a hike at a local state park may seem like more of a summer thing to do, but it’s actually very popular in the offseason. With the average temperature in the upper 40s and 50s in November and December at the Lake, it will be brisk but at least you won’t be breaking a sweat. Ha Ha Tonka and the Lake of the Ozarks State Park have dozens of trails and lots of natural wonders to explore.

It’s the game of chance. Bingo can be found at a couple of places in the area but the Elks Lodge in Laurie regularly plays every Monday at 12:30 p.m. Food is available for purchase and there’s lots of space for social distancing. Xtreme Bar Bingo is not your grandmother’s bingo and is held

3. Play Like a Kid The kids and grandkids will love this outing, but we are betting you will, too. A couple of local spots in Osage Beach are great indoor locations to play games and burn off some energy. The castle ruins are the highlight of a trip to Ha Ha Tonka. AL GRIFFIN PHOTO

Miner Mikes has more than 50,000 square feet of games, rides, simulators and food making it a great place for fun on weekends through the winter. Jetz Trampoline Park is an active place with foam pits, the free-style tarmac, a jump zone and more. Lazer Force Lazer Tag is an indoor arena where you’ll be equipped with everything you need to seek out your opponent in a blacklight, fog-filled room. It’s something people of all ages can do.

4. Let the Good Times Roll When’s the last time you’ve been bowling? There are a few local spots: Eagle Lanes in Osage Beach, Westside Lanes in Laurie, and Eldon Lanes in Eldon. Each place has different hours, and you’ll want to be sure to call ahead in case a league is scheduled to play. For a unique experience try Cosmic Bowling at Eagle Lanes.

5. Dance Up a Storm Put on your dancing shoes and head to La Roca Club - Event Venue & Night Club in Osage Beach. While the owners offer private dance lessons, the venue is a favorite place for dancing the night away. It has a night club feel with lights, a dance floor, bar serving the best martinis and even a pool table. Themed dance nights, ladies nights, holiday dances, and special events are being held all the time. A great place for girls night out. Check out their Facebook page for up-to-date information.

6. Join a Book Club Are you a bookworm who would like to connect with other readers? Contact your nearest library for a list of local book clubs. Other activities often presented by the library include crafting, game nights, workshops, movie nights, music nights and more.

All winter, The Ice at Old Kinderhook is open for skating. PROVIDED PHOTO

10. Indoor Water Fun

Whether you’re a beer or wine drinker, there are great tasting opportunities this winter at the Lake. Shawnee Bluff Winery, Seven Springs Winery, Golden Rock Winery, and Ozark Distillery & Brewery, are just a few hotspots for Lakemade wines and brew.

The cold air temperatures don’t have to keep you from jumping into the pool. The Lake area offers several indoor splash options. Westlake Aquatic Center in Laurie is only open to members due to COVID right now, but this might be the right time to focus on your health and wellness with a membership. The Regalia Hotel and Conference Center has a spacious indoor pool and hot tub that you can pay to use for the day (memberships available through Evolve Fitness & Sauna). For more of a thrill, Jolly Mon Indoor Park at Margaritaville Lake Resort offers waterslides, a lazy river, water features, an activity pool and many other activities.

9. Lace Up Your Skates Old Kinderhook turns into a winter wonderland each year when they open up the ice rink on Thanksgiving weekend. Come for open skate, pond hockey, or to host a birthday party. Daily and season passes are available. While you are there, spend time with Santa and the elves during the Christmas Village held Friday-Sunday from November 27-December 20. Festivities include hayrides, breakfast with Santa, Disney character nights on ice, cookie decorating, elf storytelling, s’mores, DIY ornaments and tons of other activities. Check their website for a full list and a schedule.

7. Reel it In Bass and crappie are great winter catches at the Lake. Other abundant species include largemouth, spotted and white bass, black and white crappie, and more. Take your winter fishing experience to the next level by hiring a fishing guide. There are a handful of guides at the Lake with the knowledge to know where to take you to find the best fishing holes any time of year.

11. The Great Escape Escape rooms are the latest rage, and there’s one available for fun right here at the Lake. Bring your family and friends and strategize your escape from one of the five different themed rooms to choose from at Lake Escape on the Bagnell Dam Strip.

12. Promote Your Business

It might be a bit cold, but winter is a great time to catch crappie and bass. AL GRIFFIN PHOTO

There are five different chambers of commerce established in the Lake area. They host business socials and events that are the perfect networking opportunities to grow your business. Now’s your chance to reach those goals and meet new people. Look for your local group to see what they have planned this winter. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

15. Get Involved Local non-profits have been hit hard this year, but the need for the work they do continues to grow. If you can’t give financially, volunteer a couple of hours for a local charity. Organizations focusing on kids, animals, the needy, and many other causes are easy to find. Greatnonprofits.org is a good place to start to find out what’s in your area.

16. Visit the Big Screen

Visitors from all over the world come to Bridal Cave, one of the Lake’s most popular attractions. AL GRIFFIN PHOTO

13. Explore the Caves Another popular winter activity are cave tours since the temperature inside remains around 60 degrees. Tour guides will take you through every inch of the cave, explain the history and folklore. Bridal Cave in Camdenton, Stark Caverns in Eldon, and Jacob’s Cave in Versailles are so unique each one is worth a visit.

14. Pamper Yourself The blustery cold can lead to dry skin and an overall sluggish feeling. A facial or massage may just be the cure. Some spas offer other amenities such as saunas, hot tubs and relaxing features so be sure to look into each one to see what is available. Infinity Float Spa at the Stone Crest Mall is a luxurious way to escape. Spend an hour or so floating in an isolation tank and you’ll feel the stress melt away. Driftwood Spa and Salon at Margaritaville Lake Resort has undergone a recent renovation. Spa Shiki is a favorite for their relaxing atmosphere and variety of amenities. Others include Spa 54 at Camden on the Lake and Spa 54 at Old Kinderhook. Winter is also a great time to visit a medical spa to reverse all that sun damage from too much exposure this summer. The Christmas Village at Old Kinderhook is held for about a month this holiday season where kids have many opportunities to visit with Santa and take part in festive activities. 20

LAKE LIFESTYLES // NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020

In a world where you can stream anything on your home TV, it’s easy to burn a hole in your couch. But you just can’t get the same experience as watching a movie on the big screen. The movie theaters are open, and a bucket of buttered popcorn is waiting. Local theaters have implemented new guidelines including lowering capacity and spacing out seats in between families. They are also asking you to skip the line and purchase tickets online. Look for showtime at Eagles Landing Cinema in Lake Ozark and Lake West Cinema just outside of Laurie.

17. Get a Birds Eye View Celebrating their 12th year at the Lake, Lake Ozark Helicopters takes people on scenic rides where you’ll get amazing views of the Lake. Just choose your destination and have your camera ready!

18. Get a History Lesson A charming historic schoolhouse serves as the location for the Camden County Museum. View artifacts from Lake area

towns, tools, clothing, furniture, Civil War memorabilia, and Indian relics. Dinner theatre performances take place on the historical stage. Ongoing events and theater productions take place all year. The Miller County and Morgan County museums also have history to share but be sure to check winter hours. The museum at Willmore Lodge is great to find out everything there is to know about the construction of Bagnell Dam.

19. Catch Some Local Talent Just because some of the waterfront restaurants are closed doesn’t mean our area musicians have hung up their instruments. Many restaurants will continue to host bands and karaoke. Shawnee Bluff Winery, JB Hook’s, Lucky’s, Casablanca and Marty Byrds are just a few spots that keep live music going all year. Don’t forget about Christmas on Main Street. With shows several times a week, Main Street Music Hall puts on an entertaining show for the whole family.

20. Go to a Holiday Event It wouldn’t be the holidays without helping someone in need. A couple of great charitable events include Christmas for Kids on December 12 and Party with a Purpose on November 14. Have fun while helping to raise money for charity! Check our local calendar of events for a full list of things to do and show up to support a good cause. Charis Patires contributed to this article.

FRED AND SHERRY SMELTZER HAVE BUILT FOUR HOMES AT THE LAKE. THEIR RETIREMENT HOME WAS BUILT TO FIT THEIR LIFESTYLE.

STORY COMPILED BY CHARIS PATIRES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALAN WOHLGEMUT

ince moving to the Lake, Fred and Sherry Smeltzer have built four homes. The first two were built on lakefront property, allowing them to take full advantage of Lake living. “We are both golfers, so when we heard that Old Kinderhook was being designed by Tom Weiskopf we decided to check it out,” Sherry said. They purchased their first lots when the course was under construction in 1997 to build a home overlooking the green of Hole No. 2. When another area along Hole No. 13 opened for development, they purchased a lot there. This was where they would downsize and build their “retirement” home which was completed in 2015. “What we love most about living in Old Kinderhook is the neighbors,” Sherry says. “This is by far the friendliest community that we have lived in. Also, we love the peaceful setting of this very well-manicured golf course property, as well as everything else Kinderhook has to offer.” When the couple began building their retirement home, they started with plans that were found online but made major modifications with the help of their builder to fit their lifestyle. Both Fred and Sherry have many hobbies and the home was built with that in mind. It is a large house with three floors, but is designed with “old age friendly” features, including an in-house elevator, stair rails on both sides and liberal use of grab bars in all bathrooms. The house was built to be energy efficient with extra insulation and geothermal heating and cooling. The floor plan, window placement, and deck design were all integrated to take advantage of the great views in every direction. “What we love most about our home is how well it meets our needs at this stage in our lives,” Sherry said. The house was designed with specific areas to enjoy many different activities: Fred’s workshop, Sherry’s sewing area, a dedicated music room, a library, a billiard room, a large kitchen, and plenty of space to entertain family and friends.

ABOUT THE HOMEOWNERS Fred grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and got his Bachelor of Science and MD degrees from The Ohio State University. After graduation, he did an Internship at the University of Missouri, Columbia, followed by three years in the Navy at the Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, Calif., where he met Sherry. After discharge, he returned to Columbia to complete his specialty training in Radiology. Sherry joined him a few months later and they were married the following year. Sherry spent her childhood as a “military brat” with frequent moves around the country. Her father was a career Marine, eventually rising to the rank of Major General. Her father retired in Oceanside, Calif., which is where she was living when she met Fred. Sherry worked as a legal secretary both in California and Missouri, until the birth of their first child. The couple moved to the Lake in 1979 where Fred joined the medical staff at the new Lake of the Ozarks General Hospital as a radiologist. “Coming to the Lake was an easy decision since we both love the outdoors, sports, fine dining and an occassional concert,” Sherry said. Since moving to the Lake, she has been a full-time mother and housewife and was a volunteer for Lake Regional Hospital, as well as at their school and church. For the past 13 years she has sent a weekly neighborhood newsletter to the Kinderhook property owners, renters, and staff as an unpaid volunteer. Since Fred retired in 2012, they have kept busy with their many hobbies, golfing, gardening, and family activities. Their enjoyment of travel is on hold for now.

The library features their collection of leather bound books, “his” and “her” massage chairs, a television, and a main floor music system.

Around the corner from the kitchen is a powder room and a guest bedroom suite.

On the upper level is the master bedroom suite, which includes a reading nook and a coffee bar, opening onto a large private deck. The master bath has a large, easy-access shower, as well as a large walk in whirlpool tub. You can see the original farm pond located next to the house outside of the window above the tub. The laundry room is located near the master bedroom, and there is a large bonus room above the garage for extra storage. A second bedroom on the upper level is used as Sherry’s office. 26

LAKE LIFESTYLES // NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020

Also upstairs is another large room that was custom built as a music room with a surround music system and Fred’s digital piano. The walls and ceiling were constructed with multiple layers and materials using the same techniques and materials that go into professional recording studios, which leads to a more uniform absorption of different audio frequencies, resulting in improved, more realistic sound. The couple spends a lot of time here listening to music and watching Broadway performances.

Another bedroom in the original design was enlarged to make a craft room for Sherry’s sewing and their shared photography hobbies. Many of their original photographs have been framed and can be found hung around the house. This room features a large stained-glass window made by Fred’s sister and brotherin-law, featuring a flying turkey, the original logo of Old Kinderhook.

On the lower level, the stairs and elevator open into the billiard room. There is a large grandchildren’s room with bunk beds, a ping pong table, bookshelves, and a bathroom.

Fred’s workshop and golf club storage room are also downstairs. He has a large collection of antique golf clubs dating from 1890 to 1935. Although the workshop initially was used for other projects, it is now mainly used for golf club repair and restoration as well as for making antique replicas. There is a storm shelter built below the front porch completely enclosed with concrete, with a steel door, which is also used for additional storage.

When they built this home, the couple scaled back their gardens compared to previous houses. The fenced in garden in the back of the house has lots of fruit and vegetable plants including tomatoes, squash, eggplant, European Pear, Asian Pear and herbs. The front of the home has flowers and herbs such as lavender and rosemary.

In the back is a large deck with a gas grill, a ceramic grill, a smoker, and plenty of seating for outdoor entertaining, overlooking the 13th green and the Lake. 28

Managing diabetes over the holidays T I P S F O R A H E A L T H I E R H O L I D A Y S E A S O N
 BY ANITA HARRISON

The holiday season is ripe with temptations, and it can be easy for anyone to overindulge. That risk is even greater when you are diabetic. However, with moderation and careful planning, diabetes should not stop you from enjoying delicious dishes during the holidays.

PLAN AHEAD Planning ahead might feel like a chore, but it is the best way to guarantee you maintain your blood sugar levels and have a good time. 34

LAKE LIFESTYLES // NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020

Wendy Castle, MPH, R.D., L.D., CDCES, Lake Regional Diabetes Education program coordinator. PROVIDED PHOTO

“Eat breakfast or a small meal earlier in the day so that you don’t overindulge during the holiday dinner,” said Wendy Castle, MPH, R.D., L.D., CDCES, Lake Regional Diabetes Education program coordinator. “Find out what the food options are before you put anything on your plate; this way you know what you want beforehand and what you can pass on. If you know there will be

a sweet treat you can’t resist, you can plan the rest of your meal accordingly.”

A BALANCED PLATE Building your dinner plate is all about finding the right balance. According to the American Diabetes Association, there is not a single “magic” diabetes diet, but there are a few guidelines that can help you build a plate that is appetizing and nutritious. First, fill half your plate with

non-starchy vegetables that are served raw, grilled or steamed. Non-starchy vegetables, such as asparagus and broccoli, are full of vitamins and minerals without all of the calories. Try to avoid vegetables in creams and gravies. Limit your foods high in carbohydrates, like potatoes or bread, to one-quarter of your plate. If there are multiple tempting options, just take a few spoonfuls or bites of each dish you want. Another quarter of your plate should be protein foods. If possible, try to select lean proteins, which are lower in saturated fat. A small dessert portion is acceptable –– just make sure you allotted for that piece of pie in your meal plan. It is the total number of carbohydrates that has the greatest effect on blood sugar. Cut a carb food earlier in the meal so that you can have your dessert later. Stay hydrated by regularly drinking water or another beverage that does not contain sugar. Avoid or limit your alcohol intake.

OTHER HELPFUL TIPS Regular testing of your blood sugar is always necessary, but it is especially important to keep track of your levels

during the holidays. “During the holidays you are probably eating different foods or more than normal,” said Castle. “Adding a few extra checks during a celebration can help you make better food choices.” Don’t take a break from your exercise regimen; regular physical activity can improve blood sugars and decrease your risk of heart disease. Instead of crashing on the couch after you eat, go for a walk outside. It is easy to make a mistake, eating

something you shouldn’t have or overeating. Don’t let one mistake be an excuse to eat excessively. Remind yourself that no one is perfect at managing diabetes all the time. Learn from your mistake and quickly make a plan to get back on track. Sources: American Diabetes Association and American Association of Diabetes Educators Anita Harrison is the assistant manager of Lake Regional Public Relations.

LEARN MORE The more you know about diabetes, the more you can do to take care of yourself. If you were recently diagnosed with diabetes or even if you have had it for many years, Lake Regional’s diabetes education program can help you. Caring, experienced staff provides education, motivation, support and hope for people living with diabetes. You will learn about your disease and your medications. You also will learn how to plan healthy meals, become more active, manage stress and cope with the daily tasks of living with diabetes. For more information, visit lakeregional.com/diabetes.

HOSTING COMPILED BY CHARIS PATIRES

H

osting a holiday party this year? It doesn’t have to be stressful. Local professionals are giving us their best tips to make sure your party is big hit among family and friends, and is easy to pull off.

FESTI V E D ECORAT IN G T IPS This season, create a no-fuss autumn tablescape to greet your guests in style. “To minimize stress and minimize your decorating budget consider building around your everyday dinnerware and adding seasonal linens,” Cara Massie, with Cara Massie Design says. “Most people don’t have the space to store dishes for each holiday celebration.”

TABLETOP DECORATING TIPS: • White dishes are a year-round staple and act as the perfect base for mixing and matching autumnal patterns to create a beautiful tabletop. Cara loves to utilize decor pieces that can be used throughout the seasons. The brass candlesticks and green table runner can easily transition into a holiday tablescape. • Pro Tip: Adding warm metals such as copper and gold is an easy way to bring warmth to your decor. Brass flatware and copper mugs are widely available at multiple retailers and they’re a great way to add some sparkle to your tabletop. Always include candlelight for special occasions. The flicker of real flames creates an ambiance that encourages your guests to linger around the holiday table. The brass candlesticks (pictured) were a thrifty find from a second-hand shop.

• Think beyond the traditional place setting. Cara dressed up this table using gilded magnolia wreaths that act like placemats, wooden beads, and mini white pumpkins from a local farm stand. Monogrammed hemstitch napkins are always in style. Adding plaid linens is a great way to introduce traditional autumn colors to your tablescape. • For an easy DIY centerpiece hollow out a fresh pumpkin and fill with fresh flowers and eucalyptus. You can create your floral arrangement a few days ahead. Use Oasis wet floral foam for your stems and refrigerate your arrangement until the day of the event. Article and tips provided by Cara Massie. For more decorating made simple tips follow Cara Massie Design on Instagram @caramassiedesign or go to www. caramassiedesign.com for a guide full of decorating tutorials. PROVIDED PHOTOS

• Create regional boards - Spanish, Greek, Italian, etc. • Be creative and use slate boards you can write on, marble or granite slabs, or cutting boards for your platter. • Vary textures on the platter. • Plan for 2 ounces of meat per person, and use different flavors of meats. • Cheese is a must - use hard and creamy cheeses. • Rustic breads and crackers work best. • Balance out the board with nuts and fresh fruits like grapes and apples. • Pickled vegetables complement the meats. • Use decorative bowls to add dimension to the platter.

N O- F U S S FOOD & PREP Charcuterie boards have become so popular there are now classes on the subject. Rebecca Christiansen, owner of A Pinch of Happiness Spice Shop in Camdenton has hosted these classes to the public and is offering her best tips to create the perfect platter.

Pro tips: • Don’t forget to include spices inside your Thanksgiving turkey as well as on the outside. • Keep healthy fruit and vegetables cut up and on hand so you aren’t always reaching for those holiday cookies. • Prepare as much as you can ahead of time to reduce stress. • Don’t be afraid to ask for help preparing meals for the holidays.

LAKE LIFESTYLES // NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020

A Pinch of Happiness is more than just a spice shop. Founded in 2007 after the birth of her son Ryan, who has Down Syndrome, Rebecca wanted to support children and adults with disabilities by providing a path to a meaningful life. Founded with the help of a non-profit Celebrate Differences, their mission is to provide job skills training and show other business owners how capable individuals with disabilities are as employees. The store has gift sets that are perfect for the holidays and can create customize baskets. Dip mix sets and loose leaf tea sets are easy ways to make drinks and snacks for your party as well. In addition to cooking classes, A Pinch of Happiness will be hosting a Shelf on the Elf party for children, a DIY Sugar Scrubs (Nov. 4 from 6-7 p.m.) and other events. Check their Facebook page for more information.

HOL IDAY COCKTAI LS Ozark Distillery & Brewery offers some great spirits and craft beer that are unique and fun crowd pleasers. With flavors like apple pie, blackberry and cinnamon, you’ll be able to create seasonal cocktails. Take-home growlers are also available so you can have plenty of drinks conveniently ready to serve.

The road to recovery shouldn’t start with a long drive. Investing in our community means bringing leading care to their doorstep. Lake Regional’s nationally accredited Cancer Center leverages state-of-the-art therapies to detect and treat various forms of cancer. Each form of cancer is different.
