hen driving up Route 5 and getting off in Camdenton, I couldn’t help but notice an electronic government road sign with the message “Minimize Your Boat Wake.” How many other communities would post a message like that on a road sign? It really makes the point how important the Lake of the Ozarks is to all of us and that all of us who boat determine the safety of all those enjoying the Lake around us. Tens of thousands of cars pulling boats will see that sign like I did and get a friendly reminder to practice good water safety. These last few years the paddleboard and kayak enthusiasts have moved onto the Lake in a big way. I enjoy watching them but if it doesn’t have a motor — too slow for me. Most boaters are accommodating to paddlers who stay in the quiet coves and enjoy the pleasure of being on the water at a slow pace. For those who enjoy high-speed boating, this year the Water Patrol is making an extra effort to educate boaters to eliminate plowing that creates large wakes that can injure other boaters and people enjoying floatables. The large wakes from plowing may cause dock damage that can easily be avoided. Maybe the geniuses that keep inventing all this new cool stuff in boats can create a plow warning device. If we can invent cars that drive themselves, how hard can it be to help people like me minimize my wake!? What a small inconvenience to make the Lake safer and a popular place for the multitude of folks who love being on the water. My wife and I went to walk around our state park off of Osage Beach Parkway recently. What a great example of what Missouri has to offer at our Lake. Down in this nice, quiet cove is a clean, well-managed place where anyone (for free) can come and picnic, swim, fish, hike, and just enjoy the beauty nature shares with us every day. The peace and quiet of the park offer a chance to recharge your batteries after a busy workday. Moms and Dads were out with their kids in the swim area just floating around on noodles enjoying time together outside. I was raised in New Jersey, just outside New York City, and it was a real treat to be able to go to a place where we could enjoy the lakes or ocean, but it usually involved an hour car ride to get there and the season was much shorter for warm weather. Here, in our communities, for most of us in 5-10 minutes we can be on the Lake or enjoying our state parks and the Lake with all the activities it offers. My wife and I have been exploring other lakes recently, some managed by the Corp of Engineers and some managed by utilities. Many of the lakes we visited were in beautiful settings but none that give the access to live on and enjoy the lake like we have at Lake of the Ozarks. It’s been easy to see why USA Today named our Lake The Best Recreational Lake in the United States.

Working
for the
weekend
I
t was during our photo shoot for the front cover with Steve and Bo Dean that I had the opportunity to wakesurf for the first time. Even though I grew up at Lake of the Ozarks, watersports have never been my thing. For someone who is closer to 40 than 30, I expected the worst – I had visions of broken bones and a trip to the ER. So I was terrified. But I did it anyway and walked away in one piece. Even my photographer (who did much better than I) decided to give it a try. We both loved it. Of course, it helped to have experienced riders at the helm, providing instruction and cheering us on. I thought it was easy to catch on to wakesurfing and, despite a few crash landings, I never came close to getting injured. I can see why it’s one of the fastest growing watersports here at the Lake. During our outing, I was reminded how much fun it is to live at Lake of the Ozarks, and why so many people come here each season. For those of us who live here full time, it’s easy to get stuck in our daily routines and not take advantage of the wonderful opportunities around us. That’s one of the reasons we wanted to put together a cover story that incorporates so many of the things we love about Lake of the Ozarks – getting out, enjoying the sunshine, scenery and natural wonders of the area. After all, weekends are for making memories at the Lake. Many of our articles in this issue provide you with great ideas on how to make the most of your time here. I hope you try some things you’ve always wanted to or that we turn you on to things you hadn’t yet heard about. Just make the most of new opportunities and enjoy this beautiful Lake of ours.

he first things you notice about Brian Weaver are his eyes. Dark brown pools of hurt look out from under a blackbilled cap that has the words “Proud” and “Parent” on either side of a U.S. Marine Corps insignia. Weaver’s eyes reflect the fact that his 20-year-old son, U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Drew Weaver, was killed in Iraq eight years ago on February 21, 2008. It is the kind of loss a father cannot, and a nation should not, ever forget. Today, Brian Weaver lives quietly in Sunrise Beach, remembering Drew and doing what he can to support other soldiers who have returned alive from Iraq, from

Afghanistan, and from other arenas where American soldiers are serving. “They’re the ones we need to take care of,” he says quietly. Brian is not one to talk much about his son. When I ask for an interview, he meets me briefly and, instead of a conversation, he hands me a small collection of family photographs, a three-ring binder of letters and notes he received following his son’s death. And a red folder that came along with a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal awarded posthumously to Drew. “Here are all the comments from people who came to the funeral, too,” he says, trusting me to return his precious books. Then he adds, “A lot of people are proud of their kids. Drew was — did — he was…” His voice trails off.

A glance through the snapshots shows a happy father holding a baby, a blond boy swimming in the lake and sitting with family on a boat dock, Brian with Drew — then a newly minted marine — and another of Brian with Drew in desert fatigues. Other pictures show brother Jeff who served in the Navy but was discharged after Drew’s body was flown back to Missouri. Official condolences are in the binder: from U.S. President George Bush, Senator Claire McCaskell, members of Congress, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and many high-ranking members of the military. Dozens more letters from friends, family members and fellow Marines confirm that freckled, blue-eyed Drew was a loyal friend and very special guy. “Drew saved my life,” writes a comrade. “I was 20 yards away from Drew that day and without him seeing the enemy, I and the other Marines on the ground would not be here…” Another letter says, “…Marines don’t fight for their country, they don’t fight for our flag, they don’t fight for freedom, they fight for each other! …Drew saved my cousin and I will always remember and honor your son. Drew’s not a hero because he lost his life, Drew is a hero because of what he did while he was alive!” Drew decided to join the Marines even before his 2005 graduation from St. Charles West High School, and signed on when he was just 17. Despite being in Iraq, he was hoping to add a brief tour in Afghanistan before his planned discharge in September 2008. Instead, his life was cut short in Iraq’s Al Anbar Province while he and his platoon were conducting reconnaissance operations. As they
pursued five insurgents, the team took heavy fire from AK-47 assault rifles and an RPK machine gun. According to official records, Drew took the lead for his squad in the assault. Spying an insurgent who was about to ambush the other members of his team, Weaver exposed himself to enemy fire and shouted a warning to his comrades. Although he was mortally wounded in the ensuing firefight, according to the U.S. Navy, he saved the lives of his fellows. Today, even though Drew’s dad tries to keep a low profile and focus on other things, he does join the Lake community once a year for the Walk/Run for the Fallen, a part of a national tribute that specifically commemorates the 142 Missourians who have died in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. As part of their participation, each walker and runner carries the name of an individual who didn’t return from the wars. Last year, says Brian, there weren’t quite enough walkers and runners to match the number of soldiers to be remembered. “I’m trying to get more people to participate this year.” More participants won’t lessen the pain in Brian’s brown eyes, but they will help remind the rest of us of just how big a sacrifice our soldiers are willing to make — something we should never forget.

Mark Maasen gears up for Lake of the Ozarks Shootout
M
ark Maasen has always enjoyed racing, whether it was on land or on the water. A self-proclaimed motorhead, he started participating in the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout when it began 28 years ago — first as a volunteer patrol boat operator and now as a racer, sponsor and vice president of the Shootout. He took first place in his class racing a 28-foot Baja in 2013 and 2014. He’s hoping to top his 2015 second-place win in his 38 Cigarette Top Gun. Also last year, he won his class at the Grand Lake Shootout held in Oklahoma. His brother Mike also races. In the last three years of the Shootout, Mike ran his 42-foot Cigarette grabbing first place in his class. Both will be returning to the races in August. “The thing I enjoy most about racing is the competition,” Mark said. “Not to mention all of the great people we meet along the way.” The brothers, who own Poly Lift Boat Lifts, participate in a number of boating events besides the Shootout. They can be seen at the Lake Race Fun Run, the Support Our Troops Poker Run (both held in June), the Shootout Poker Run, and the Old Hickory Fun Run held in Tennessee. They also run in the Grand Lake Shootout in July. Mike took first place in the event last year. Since all the money goes to charity, they often not

only participate but support the events as sponsors. “It’s all about the charities for us,” Mark says. The Make-A-Wish rides are significant to him since his wife Tiffany helps put them together. The rides are given to chronically-ill children so they can experience what it’s like to ride in a race boat. “We all enjoy this special event.”

here’s an adage in the boating world that the two best days of a boater’s life are the day he bought the boat and the day he sold it. While that may be a stretch of the truth for those of us who relish the Lake of the Ozarks, there’s a third option that a locally franchised company has thrown into the mix: Joining the Freedom Boat Club. FBC, located at Bridgeport Marina next to the Grand Glaize Bridge in Osage Beach, is an alternative that removes the headaches, costs and challenges of boat ownership and replaces them with unlimited, stress-free use of any of seven boats in the local fleet. Boats range from 24 feet in length to 32 feet with values from $45,000 to $120,000. Not bad for wanting to use a boat rigged for the Lake of the Ozarks whenever you 20

We look forward to another great year here at the Lake.” This is Freedom Boat Club’s third year at the Lake. The company uses a proprietary online reservation system and spur-ofthe-moment boating. “We supply coolers with ice, chill rafts and water saddles all at no charge to our members,” Koch said. FBC Lake of the Ozarks currently has

flexible membership programs available,” Koch said. “Freedom Boat Club provides the best of boating, offering access to not only our local fleet of new boats, but a reciprocal program for boat usage nationwide. Freedom Boat Club vessels are for member use only — we do not rent to the general public.” Freedom Boat Club is considered the world’s oldest and largest members-only boating club. Freedom Boat Clubs all operate with a one-time entry fee and low monthly dues. Members never incur any of the costs associated with boat ownership such as insurance, towing, maintenance and cleaning, lift, slip or dock fees. Bill and Genise LaCasse of Osage Beach are believers. “It’s been the best boat experience in my life,” Bill said enthusiastically. Longtime boat owners, the LaCasses found themselves using their own boat less and less. Getting it ready, stressing over potential problems on the water, cleaning up after returning to the dock and then having to cover their boat became a hassle for them.
“It’s a constant battle,” Bill said of owning a boat. “A boat is a hole in the water, and last year we weren’t getting out as much as we used to. A friend mentioned Freedom Boat Club, we joined and we’ve never had an experience with boating that’s any better.” They’ve been able to customize the type of boat they use to the type of outing. If kids are going, they take the boat with the slide. If adults are looking for a smooth
ride, they take one of the pontoon boats. If they want to impress someone, they take them in the 32-footer. They traveled to Florida last year, and were able to take advantage of the reciprocal agreements between clubs and boat along the coast. “It was spectacular,” Bill said. “The staff was just as nice there as they are here.” As a financial advisor, LaCasse knows that a boat depreciates faster in a year than what a membership costs. “Once again, we’ve tried to find the downside of it all, and it just isn’t happening. We’ve been totally amazed at how flawless the process is.” St. Louis resident and weekender Robyn Roehl couldn’t agree more. “We love the fact that it’s maintenance free, that they handle everything,” she said. “All we to do is show up, and then walk away when we’re done.” She and her husband, Russ, have a second home in Osage Beach and they contemplated buying a boat until they learned of Freedom Boat Club. They also had less than desirable experiences in renting boats at the Lake. Once they researched costs associated with buying and maintaining a boat, they decided FBC was the way to go. “We signed up last November, and we’re the crazy people in January on a 60-degree day out on the Lake,” she laughed. Having Captain Jim (Koch) spend time with them, teaching them the ins and outs of the boats gave them the security and confidence to become regular boaters — without the hassles typically associated with boat ownership. A Legend and Father Teaching respect and the history of golf By Paul Leahy
O
n April 18, I lost my father, and golf lost another legend. He was a true ambassador of the game. I have worked and have been around golf my whole life. I have seen the game and the people who play it change and evolve over time. Golfers of my father’s generation were true gentlemen and caretakers of the game with his passing (as well as those of his peers) the history and foundation of golf is becoming lost. My father, Robert Leahy, bought his first full set of golf clubs with money he received from the Navy when he was discharged after World War II. I’m not sure if he knew at the time, but golf became an avenue where he would positively influence his family, peers and direction of Iowa golf for the next 70 years. Beginning in 1953 and spanning 24 years, he won 11 major tournaments in the state of Iowa. Only four other men have won more major tournaments in Iowa. The first was the Iowa Masters in 1953 and culminated in a win at the Northwest Amateur at the age of 50 in 1977. He won three state amateur titles in a four-year span beginning in 1954, winning also in 1956 and 1957. 36-hole championship matches were played then and he won each title in impressive fashion. He bested his opponent 9 & 8, 8 & 7 and 6 & 5. He was the consummate gentlemen on and off the course. Always the first to congratulate others on a good shot, the first to take his cap off at the end of the round to shake an opponent’s hand, and the first to console a friend after a loss.

Born in 1965, I didn’t get to see him play in his prime, but I quickly understood the skills he possessed and the respect he had in Iowa golf. Our family spent most summer weekends in the 70s traveling with him to play in golf tournaments. Watching him prepare to play, listening to young and old talk about their respect for him, and watching him compete taught me how to behave and respect the game. To say my brother and I were proud to be his sons would be an understatement. Standing 5’9” and walking with a slight limp he wasn’t what you would call a physically-dominating presence, but he used that as motivation to grind out wins and respect from his peers. He continued to play competitively well into his 70’s and was twice honored as Iowa’s Senior Player of the Year.
Along with competing at the highest level, he was on the boards of the Iowa Golf Association and Herman Sani Scholarship committee for over 50 years. In 1991, he was inducted into the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame for not only his stellar play but for his commitment and passion for Iowa golf and what it stands for. In 2014, the Iowa Golf Association established an award in his name, the Leahy Medal. It is awarded annually to both men and women for outstanding achievements in competitions played in the state of Iowa. He was well enough to be able to attend the awards ceremony in 2014 and present the medals to the inaugural group of recipients. Most in attendance that evening had never seen him play and probably had to Google his name to find out why his name and likeness were on the medal they were receiving. In a testament to what golf can do for an individual, all of the recipients had obviously done their homework. As each came forward to be honored, they spoke to my father as if they knew him, and my father

in his subtle way offered them encouragement and mentioned something about each one of them. Mutual respect was evident as both presenter and honoree had done their homework on the other. The last nine months of my father’s life were spent in a nursing home confined to a wheelchair. He continued to fight, working at his therapy each day to try and regain his ability to walk, and hitting golf balls from his wheelchair in the courtyard. With my mom by his side daily, and with failing hearing, he continued to influence others in his subtle ways. Mom would spend most meals in the cafeteria with him and the other residents, and they would sit with the same guys at each meal.
Not much was said during these meals as many had difficulty speaking or hearing, but a connection and bond was formed. At the visitation one of the first to arrive were three of the guys he ate with. They had convinced the nursing home to take them, and they wheeled in to pay their respects. After they left, my mom turned to me and said she thought that is the first time they had gone to anyone’s visitation since Dad had been there. What a testament to a man who earned respect by his actions on the course and then by his silent presence at the dining table. He influenced others when no one knew who he was and I am sure his influence will continue for years to come. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

ne of the best places to play golf this summer is Northern Michigan and particularly Arcadia Bluffs. Arcadia Bluffs is situated on 265 acres and covers 3,100 feet of Lake Michigan frontage. Just 50 miles southwest of Traverse City, this incredible golf course opened in 1999 followed by the Lodge at Arcadia Bluffs in 2010 offering world-class lodging. college I can attest to the area’s beauty and awesome summertime temperatures. With low humidity and highs in the 70’s there is no better place in July than Michigan. Playing at 7,300 yards from the back tee, this giant of a course will challenge any caliber of player. With four sets of tees however, the course can play as short as 5,100 yards which makes it playable for any skill set. The course encompasses 245 acres of the property and has 50 sod-walled styled bunkers, reminiscent of those found in Scotland and Ireland. Wide fairways framed by native grasses gives you the feeling that you are playing an Open Championship links course. The green complexes are enormous, averaging 8,000 square feet so you might want to spend a little extra time on the putting green before your round. There are two ways to navigate your way around the course. You can use the standard golf cart or my suggestion would be to walk and utilize one of Arcadia’s professional

ew Orleans is a city best known for it’s historic French Quarter serving up the best creole cuisine. But you wouldn’t know it dining on Po’ boys and Etoufee at this local hotspot. Since 2006, Shorty Pants Lounge in Osage Beach has been featuring a menu straight out of New Orleans. Owned by Brian and Mark Barrett, these brothers know the restaurant business. As the owners of Shorty Pants, Dog Days and Wobbly Boots, quality, consistency and a unique dining experience is what you’ll find at any location. Staff are passionate about what they do, and it shows. The attention to detail, extensive menus and management onsite run a tight ship to make sure everyone leaves a happy customer. At Shorty Pants, general manager Ashley Tune Mantle
says they take pride in offering a menu that’s “better than bar food.” They want to create an experience that people keep coming back for, she said. Creole items are all over the menu with their signature Shrimp ‘N Grits, Jambalaya, New Orleans Medley, Creole Quesadilla, Sausage and Chicken Gumbo Salad, and a variety of Po’ Boys. Famous for their Crab Cakes, fish connoisseurs will enjoy the Catfish BLT, Ahi Tuna dishes, oysters, and shrimp. If you are not a fan of creole cuisine, not to worry; the vast menu has options for everyone. There’s plenty of fish, burgers, steaks, salads, chicken, pasta, wraps and sandwiches to order. With mojitos made from fresh-squeezed juices and cajun bloody marys, there’s always something fun to order from the bar.
Q&A with the chef What do you make most at home? I grill steaks outside. I enjoy a nice day playing football with the kids and grilling. Meatloaf, pasta ... I like it all. What do you like most about your job? I like to hear people who enjoy my food. Pleasing people’s palate. When did you start your career as a chef?
I started cooking fine food at the Old Trail House, worked at Dog Days for 10 years and moved to Shorty Pants where I’ve been since it opened.

Blackened Catfish
In a skillet add 2 tbs. butter until melted. Add the following ingredients in this order letting it cook for about 30 seconds in between. Add 1/4 pound of sliced Andouille sausage, 1 tablespoon of garlic, 3 cooked bacon strips (chopped), a handful of sliced onion and mushroom, 4 tbs. of white wine, handful of shrimp, 1 tbs. of herb salt, sprinkle in sliced green onion and parsley flakes. Add a few more tablespoons of white wine and let it cook for a few minutes. Add to a plate of grits and cornbread.
Cover both sides of a catfish filet with blackened seasoning. Heat a cast iron skillet with olive oil over medium high heat. Add the filet and cook each side for three minutes. It’s great on top of a salad with an assortment of fruit.

Where We Went We call it good fortune to have been driving along Illinois Street in Camdenton as Baba’s Bistro’s sign was being installed in the summer of 2015. Since then, Baba’s Bistro has earned a loyal following, thanks to good food and good service. The intervening months have also given us an opportunity to enjoy Baba’s food many times. It’s a popular caterer and was before the restaurant opened. Baba is Cindy Davis, a retired Camdenton school teacher of 37 years. Her mother owned and operated Supreme Bakery in Springfield, and her recipes live on at Baba’s, both in the kitchen and as framed art on the walls. Baba’s continues to run in the family with daughter Meagan Schwartz as hostess and server, son-in-law Jim Schwartz as cook, grandson Asher helping out when school doesn’t command his time, and Baba herself baking or delivering catered foods.
What We Ate On our first visit to Baba’s, I ordered the Chicken Salad Sandwich and have ordered it again on subsequent visits. Jim Schwartz is the man in the kitchen stirring together a savory and sweet blend of chicken, green grape, and curry mayonnaise. He is also an artisan who enjoys presenting foods so that they please the heart before the first bite. My husband, Al, ordered the Jack Rabbit Salad made with red bell pepper strips, corn, black beans, bacon, cheese, and a Cilantro Avocado Ranch dressing. He loved it. We’ve also sampled Baba’s pasta salads (highly recommended!). During lunch meetings at Baba’s I’ve noticed salads are popular but Baba’s many sandwiches are also a big hit. One monthly meeting I attend often provides those sandwiches with Baba’s homemade chips on the side because both are crowd-pleasers.

What We Like About It Thanks to other meetings held there we’ve sampled Baba’s bakery skills, too. The appetizers wrapped in phyllo pastry are tasty, and Baba’s gooey butter cakes are in demand. A quick review of Baba’s Facebook page proves how often Baba bakes and how tempting each one is.
Why We’ll Go Again Baba’s Bistro has never disappointed us whether we stopped in during dining hours or encountered them at a catered event. We also enjoy the restaurant itself for its personal touches. Baba is fond of bicycles so guests will see them outside and inside, painted and in 3D. As a retired teacher, she’s also well acquainted with chalk and chalkboards so both are available for art work, autographs, and reviews — all good.

t’s hard to recall exactly when the little Greenview restaurant Full Moon Over Italy went out of business, but when it did it left a hole in the Camdenton/Greenview dining community that remains unfilled today. Full Moon Over Italy was a pizza and pasta restaurant that was affectionately known as “Stan & Gabby’s” for a decade or longer near Highways 5 and 7 in Greenview. When the couple retired, it became the second incarnation of Alberdini’s Restaurant, which had existed across the street and, sometime later, the building became a real estate business. Today, an antique shop operates in the same building. The familiar aroma of food from the Old Country is long gone.
Pasta Puttanesca is one of those dishes that deserves a special Sunday sit-down with family and friends and, while it takes a little longer than less-complicated Italian specialties, it’s worth the wait. Pasta Puttanesca, or Harlot’s Pasta, is said to have become a specialty of the “working ladies” in certain cities frequented by tourists in Italy. The finished pasta and topping would be placed by the open window as an announcement they were open for business. The spaghetti noodles can be angel hair, thick or thin or even pepper infused. My favorite is angel hair.

What you’ll need: n 16 oz. pkg. of dry pasta n 1/3 cup olive oil n 1 tin of anchovies, finely chopped n 12-15 garlic cloves, chopped n ¼ tsp. dried red pepper flakes n 12-15 roma paste tomatoes, sliced n 12-15 black kalamata olives, sliced n 2 jars of small capers, drained n 1/3 cup of parsley, chopped n 2 medium yellow onions, coarsely
chopped In a large skillet, heat the olive oil while finely chopping the anchovies and garlic. Add these to the oil and simmer. As the anchovies and garlic cook down (5 minutes or so on medium heat) add remaining ingredients. Simmer for another 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. If this aroma has not attracted all the occupants of the house into the kitchen and hasn’t overpowered the cook, prepare the pasta as usual. When done, drain in a colander and splash lightly with more olive oil. Serve the pasta with a helping of the Puttanesca topping and sprinkle fresh cracked red pepper and Parmesan cheese. Bon Appétit!

h, yes. The weekend is finally here. If you are traveling to the Lake from out of town, maybe it’s for a week long vacation. Or you could be spending the weekend at your second home on the Lake. Even for those of us who live here full time, we all look forward to summer and spending time in the outdoors. Whatever your reason for visiting, summer is here. Sure you can boat and swim, but we knew that already. How about creating an experience you will never forget? We’ve tried them all out for you, and are sharing some of our favorite ways to make it the perfect weekend at the Lake.
L E A R N TO WA K E S U R F Are you up for a new adventure? Wakesurfing has become one of the fastest growing watersports at the Lake, and it’s easy to see why. It’s not difficult to learn, even if someone has little experience on the water. It doesn’t tear up the body, despite the number of falls you take. And it’s something the entire family can do. For father-and-son duo Steve and Bo Dean, wakesurfing is something they enjoy so much, they put about 160 hours on their boat last season alone. Steve says all three of his kids took up the sport, making it a great way to spend some quality time together. Steve mainly sticks to wakesurfing, while Bo spends time wakeboarding as well. During the summer months, Bo gives wakesurfing lessons at Surdyke Yamaha Port 20 in Osage Beach. They both say wakesurfing is easier to learn than other watersports. Once you are up and let go of the rope, there’s nothing to hold onto. Just ride the wave. Without anything strapping your feet or legs in there’s less of a risk of injury when you take that inevitable fall into the water. The best way to wakesurf is behind a wakesurfing boat. These boats drive just like any other vessel and are specifically designed to create the perfect wake. Added bonus — since you surf directly behind the boat you are close enough to interact with everyone onboard. With a few simple instructions, it’s easy to catch on, but beware, you just might become hooked! continued on next page

Wakesurfing tips
Occasionally, Surdyke will host free wakesurfing clinics during the summer, but if you are looking for a one-on-one lesson, Bo offers them by appointment. Cost is $125 per hour for a group of up to six people. Call or text 573-216-2691 to make a reservation. I would recommend booking at least two hours so you have plenty of time to learn and everybody in your party can spend some time out on the water.

boaters and dock/homeowners. Follow the rules of the water. n Look for long, wide, unpopulated coves. The Lake of the Ozarks State Park, just past the Grand Glaize Bridge, is the perfect spot for watersports.

A F T E R H O U R S I N T H E PA R K We’ve got some of the largest, and dare I say, most beautiful parks in the state park system. Besides the trails, fishing, camping, and other ways to explore the parks, there are also special events being held this summer. These events are held at Ha Ha Tonka State Park and are free. Astronomy for Beginners July 9 & August 6 The Camden County Astronomy Club meets at the Post Office Shelter for this program. You will have the opportunity to view stars and planets through telescopes and learn more about the solar system. From 8:30-10 p.m. Owl Prowl July 13 The park is home to a few species of owls and you will get the chance to learn all about these birds of prey. Meet at the Post Office Shelter. From 8:30-9:30 p.m.
MarineMax Several free clinics are being offered by MarineMax Team Rider and Nautique Ambassador Ben Vens. Classes begin at 9 a.m. with all ages welcome. They will be held July 9 & August 27. O P E N A I R PA I N T I N G Looking for something to do on a Monday night? Well, look no further. Get in touch with your creative side during Open Air Painting nights held on Mondays at NautiFish Rum Bar, just outside of Camdenton. For $20 you’ll get all the paint supplies you need and a free drink. One of the restaurant owners, Michael Karas, came up with the idea earlier this season and it’s been a big hit. With an appreciation for the arts, and having attended college on a fine arts scholarship, Karas wanted to come up with an event that encourages others to participate in the arts. Local artists (including Michael) help teach the painting sessions, provide help when needed, and inspiration on what to paint. Any money raised from the events will support arts in the community. It starts at 5:30 p.m. and is held throughout the summer. So get a group together, pick up a paint brush and enjoy the Lake. NautiFish is located at 1022 Nautica Rd., Camdenton, or at the 3.5-mile marker of the Niangua Arm.
SADDLE UP Get away from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind and connect with nature. It’s a 10-minute drive from Camdenton to Old Family Farm Trail Rides, and what will greet you are dozens of mustangs trained to take you on a scenic trail ride. The 120-acre farm has more than 20 iconic American mustangs that have been adopted through the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Owner Chris Jaminson spends months taming these wild horses providing them a home and a job giving trail rides. You will quickly learn how beautiful and gentle these horses are. The farm has turned out to be the perfect setting for the rides, offering a quiet and relaxing setting with sloping hills, a spring-fed creek and lots of shade. Cost is $30 per hour or $20 per 1/2 hour (ages 7 and older). Pony rides are available for $10 for children ages 3-8. Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. year-round depending on weather, all trail rides are booked so that the party reserving the ride are the only ones going out at that time. Other rides Thouvenel Stables at Tan-Tar-A Resort has one-hour rides along the scenic golf course. Just look for the big red barn. Rides start in the morning around 10 a.m. and can accommodate up to 10 people (ages 7 and up). Cost is $40. Pony rides are offered for 3-6 year olds for $15. The Lake of the Ozarks State Park has several trails perfect for horseback riding. By reservation only you can take a 30-minute, one-hour or two-hour trail ride. T H E B E S T F LOAT T R I P S Dan Dougan has paddled every major Ozark stream in Missouri, so it’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about float trips. “There are many rivers to choose from here in the Ozarks,” he said. An outdoor enthusiast, Dougan is the owner of Oz Cycles in Lake Ozark and participates in action-packed competitions like the MR340 bike race from Kansas City to St. Charles (340 miles in 62 hours). For the last 20 years he has been floating, and prefers a kayak over a canoe when paddling solo. Kayaks are more comfortable, faster and easier to turn, he says. But if he’s with his 6-year-old or he needs a lot of gear, a canoe is the preferred method of getting around. The most popular rivers in and around the Lake area are the Big Niangua, Little Niangua, Osage and Gasconade. Dougan points out many tributary creeks such as Gravois Creek, Indian Creek and
Macks Creek, but says a lot of rain is needed for them to be paddled. His favorite spot is the Wet Glaize that feeds into the back of Lake of the Ozarks State Park. Access the river down A Road at the Toronto Springs Conservation Area and Swinging Bridges Road in the Lake of the Ozarks State Park. But it might not be for the novice. There are many snags and changes after floods so paddlers need to be alert near bends and tight turns, Dougan warns. It’s not uncommon to carry your raft around log jams. “The hard work required for this float is worth it,” he says. “The scenery, fishing and wildlife on this stream are unsurpassed by the other local streams.”

Here are his six must-see rivers in Missouri: 1. Upper Jacks Fork River Great during the spring and after a heavy rain. “This is, hands down, the best 25-30 miles of float stream in the state of Missouri,” Dougan says. The river winds through a canyon-like setting so you’ll see tall bluffs, clear blue water and plenty of gravel bars to camp on. Small Mouth Bass fishing is good. Best time to float is April-mid June, late September-mid November. 2. North Fork of the White River Large springs and swift-moving water are the characteristics of this river. There are also lots of Blue Ribbon Trout and big Small Mouth Bass. 3. Eleven Point River A National Scenic River, you can float this river even in drought years. It’s got cold, electric blue water below Greer Spring. Great place to cool down in the heat of the summer. Fish for Rainbow Trout and Small Mouth Bass. 4. Current River It’s the most popular National Scenic River in the state with blue spring-fed water and lots of wildlife.
5. Black River Dougan says it’s probably the leastknown river in the state and has crystal-clear water. Grab your snorkeling gear, but it’s not the best fishing river. 6. Big Piney Also an overlooked river, it snakes through the Mark Twain National Forest and Fort Leonard Wood. It’s known as one of the best fishing streams with tall bluffs, tiny springs, cool water and lots of shade. Local floats You don’t have to own any equipment to take a float trip. There are plenty of outfitters that can equip you with the right kayak or canoe to enjoy a day out on the river. Just make sure to bring a cooler with your favorite beverages, snacks and plenty of sunscreen. The Lake area has two main rivers to float - the Little Niangua and Big Niangua. You can float the Osage River but you’ll have to bring your own equipment. To our knowledge, there are no outfitters along this river. A general rule of thumb for a lazy day on the river is to plan for a speed of one mile per hour.

obbi Bash has lived in some of the best communities around Lake of the Ozarks. Like many people, she started visiting the Lake and then decided to make a permanent move. “When my last child went to college, I moved to the Lake,� Bash said. She obtained her real estate license and since then has not only been selling homes but buying and building homes for herself. Over the course of 27 years she made a number of personal real estate transactions in Osage Beach and Lake Ozark. She purchased

a condominium, built two houses (one in Four Seasons, and one in Cedar Crest), a lot in Four Seasons and lived on the golf course at Oak Creek. About eight years ago she went to list a home at Tan-Tar-A Estates and instead of putting it on the market, she decided to buy it. As luck would have it the homeowners wanted to live in Oak Creek so they decided to swap houses, and Bash moved into the fivebedroom, three-bath home. Despite having lived all over the Lake area, she says Tan-Tar-A Estates is her favorite place to be.

Bash says many property owners at the Lake have chosen to turn their second homes into rental properties when they are not being used making it a great investment. “I’m selling a lot of rental investments and Tan-Tar-A Estates has a number of rentals,” she said. Next to the kitchen is even more seating with the “Pine Room.” Always thinking like a Realtor, Bash says this room would make a great office. On the left of the picture is a screened-in porch. It can also be accessed through the deck and a fencedin yard that was built just for Bash’s dogs. Of course, there is a doggie door, too, so they can come and go as they please. A privacy fence was built along one edge of the porch so you feel completely secluded despite having close neighbors. In fact, it’s hard to see the neighbors from any spot in the house. amantha Richardson is the real deal. Her family has lived in the Barnett area between Eldon and Versailles since before the Civil War, and today she lives on a small farm with her husband, son, various farm animals, and a very productive cottage garden. She grew up watching her parents, grandparents and extended family, heard stories about the old ways of doing things, and asked even more questions. But she fancies herself as the “The Stylish Gardener” because she’s not overly scrupulous when it makes more sense to do other than her grandmother did. The Stylish Gardener’s farm stand can be found each week at the Copperhead Market south of Eldon. Her stand showcases a jug full of peacock feathers. Of course! A visitor should expect nothing less from the red-headed creator of a marvelous website — www.thestylishgardener.com — who offers sips of lavender lemonade to customers and treats for passing pooches while she answers questions on gardening, cooking, her chickens’ colored eggs or her homemade/handmade products. She shares what she has learned, and her gusto for her lifestyle is contagious. After a few minutes conversation with Samantha, almost anyone would want to hurry home, dig a garden, make soap, pluck a chicken or build a fence. Her very stylish tent-top stand encourages just that, with inviting displays of plants, plant-based products, herbal teas, body products, specially baked pet treats, and a container full of egg-shaped soap, not to mention the peacock feathers. After a taste of her tangy, lavender lemonade, I quickly grabbed up a packet to take home. And while I declined to buy a pot of lavender that was also for sale, I did listen

as she explained to me, just in case I might plant some, that English lavender is best for this crazy climate, and how to care for it. Because Richardson grew up the way she did, she’s a wealth of knowledge about plants well beyond their food uses. Marigolds, for example, are good for inflammation or inflamed joints, and are also good to ward off some garden pests. Dried lavender is a nice addition to a sweater drawer. My biggest take-away from our visit was that when plants are grown for their leaves, like mint and parsley, they are more forgiving in low-sun gardens, good news for my own ever-shadier plot. As I stood there wondering what else I needed to know, several other people stopped, all with questions about gardening or about Richardson’s products. That, in fact, is why she expanded from her website to markets. “People really want to get into natural things, whether through their own gardens
or farmers markets,” she says, turning to explain her marigold-and-lavender-infused olive oil scrub to Paula Niemeier, who had met Richardson at the School of the Osage Christmas bazaar last December. “I use that scrub twice a week,” she tells Niemeier, adding, “Olive oil goes on heavy but sinks in pretty quickly.” Niemeier asks a few questions, then picks up a bottle of the scrub to take home. And that’s the way the day goes with the Stylish Gardener – full of questions, answers and conversation. She tells another visitor she has a preference for multipurpose plants. “If you can’t eat it AND put it on your skin, I don’t have any use for it.” She expands on that sentiment in her website: “I’m drawn to plants with a purpose. I like to grow things that have some sort of uniqueness to them: a great story, an unusual feature, a creative use. So, heirloom vegetables, edible flowers, and herbs make up the bulk of my cottage-style garden.” When she cooks, she makes an effort to see that at least one ingredient in every meal is from her own farmstead, and she manages her own garden with rain water, composting and other old/new approaches, lessons she is happy to share. Richardson obviously loves interacting with customers, human and canine, and this enthusiasm has led to the purchase of an old

4 common hazards for kids By Anita Neal Harrison

amily vacations, fun at the pool, summer sports, no school — summer is prime time to make childhood memories. Yet lurking in the shadows of summer’s fun in the sun are some common hazards that can make a kid’s summer memorable for all the wrong reasons. “I encourage kids — and their parents — to be aware of how summertime adventures can go wrong so they can avoid mishaps,” says Trent Russell, M.D., a pediatrician at Lake Regional Clinic – Osage Beach. “With a little education and prevention, kids can be safe and healthy and make great memories all summer long.” Common summertime hazards kids should look out for are swimmer’s ear, poison ivy, wounds needing stitches and sunburn. Dr. Russell provides tips for how to avoid these misadventures, as well as what to do if one does happen.
Misadventure #1: Swimmer’s Ear Also known as otitis externa, swimmer’s ear is an infection of the outer ear canal. Symptoms usually appear within a few days of swimming and include itchiness inside the ear; redness and swelling of the ear; pain when the infected ear is tugged or when pressure is placed on the ear; and pus draining from the infected ear. How to Avoid It: “Swimmer’s ear occurs when the ear canal holds water for a long period of time,” Dr. Russell says. “The best way to avoid it is to keep the ears dry.” Have your child use a bathing cap, ear plugs or custom-fitted swim molds when swimming. Teach them to use a towel to dry their ears well after swimming and then to tilt their head to each side to allow water to escape the ear canal. While the ear is facing down, have them pull the earlobe in different directions to help water drain out. photos provided

“Teach your children never to put objects in their ear canals,” Dr. Russell says. “This includes fingers and cotton-tip swabs.” Before using ear drops, consult a health care provider. Drops should not be used by people with ear tubes, damaged ear drums, outer ear infections or ear drainage. How to Treat It: If your child has symptoms of swimmer’s ear, seek medical attention. Swimmer’s ear can be treated with antibiotic ear drops.
Misadventure #2: Poison Ivy Poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac all contain urushiol, a colorless, odorless oil that causes an allergic reaction in about 60 percent to 80 percent of people. This reaction can include a rash, itching and even swelling, and it can appear within hours of contact or take as long as five days to appear. The rash takes one to two weeks to heal.
Water Safety Follow these tips to keep kids safe in the water. 1. Make sure at least one adult is providing constant supervision when children are in or around the water, even if the children know how to swim. This adult should not be drinking, reading a book, using a phone or otherwise distracted. It takes only 20 seconds on average for a child to drown. Stay alert! 2. Always wear life jackets when boating or using a PWC. 3. Sign your kids up for swim lessons. 4. Learn CPR. 5. Don’t confuse toys with safety devices. Water wings, noodles and the like are for fun — not safety. Don’t use them in place of life jackets.
pills or creams that contain antihistamines or steroids might be needed.
How to Avoid It: Teach your children how to identify poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac, and teach them to be aware of their surroundings. Have them wear long sleeves and long pants when in areas where these plants might grow. “Unfortunately, it’s possible to have a reaction to urushiol even without direct contact with a urushiol-producing plant,” Dr. Russell says. “People can pick up urushiol from anyone or anything that’s come in contact with the oil — including pets.” How to Treat It: If your children come into contact with urushiol oil, immediately have them take a shower and use lots of soap. If your child develops a rash, consult your health care provider. Treatment might be cool showers and a soothing lotion, such as calamine lotion. For severe reactions, prescription
Misadventure #3: Wounds Needing Stitches Most scrapes and cuts require nothing more than washing and a bandage, but some require medical attention and stitches. Seek medical attention for a cut if it continues to bleed after pressure has been applied for five minutes; is gaping or wide; appears to be deep; is on your child’s face or neck; contains glass or other debris; or spurts blood. How to Avoid It: Unfortunately, there’s not much parents can do to help their children avoid these injuries. But knowing how to treat them can save a lot of distress. How to Treat It: “If a cut fits the criteria for needing medical attention, don’t wait to go to
the doctor,” Dr. Russell says. “Most wounds that require stitches should be closed within six to eight hours of the injury.” Rinse the wound with clean water — do not use lake water or pool water — and use gauze or a clean cloth to cover the wound. If the cloth soaks through, add cloth on top. Do not use antiseptic or antibiotic on the wound before going to the doctor.
Misadventure #4: Sunburn Sunburns result from too much ultraviolet radiation. Painful in the short-term, sunburns are also dangerous in the long-term, increasing a child’s future risk of skin cancer. Be aware that symptoms can take four to six hours to develop, so even a touch of pink out in the sun can result in a major burn. At the first sign of reddening, get out of the sun and start treatment. How to Avoid It: Always use sunscreen when spending even a little time outside. Teach your children not to skimp when applying and to be sure to get their ears, scalp, back of neck and tops of their feet. Have them reapply at least every two hours. Also, have them seek shade as much as possible. How to Treat It: Aloe vera, oatmeal baths and cool compresses can be soothing and make peeling and flaking less noticeable. Ibuprofen, with its anti-inflammatory properties, may help limit the swelling and redness, which can decrease the skin’s long-term damage. To avoid infection, do not break blisters. “Seek medical care if the sunburn comes with fever and chills, nausea, confusion or a large area of blistering,” Dr. Russell says. “Also seek medical attention for blisters larger than your small fingernail.”

t’s not just cool cars that you’ll find during the Hot Summer Nights cruise-in held each month throughout the summer in Lake Ozark. Taking a stroll down the Strip you’ll encounter clowns, magicians and a well-known pirate. These street performers put on quite a show. Here are a few of the ones you will come across this season.

Who it is: Mary Boland-Hanley AKA: Merry Mary After moving to the Lake area, she began face painting in 2009 and now can be seen at festivals and community events throughout Missouri, often with her friend and clown sidekick Jackie Newton. Butterflies, rainbows, unicorns, cats and sharks are among kids’ favorite requests. Don’t forget to leave a tip!
Who it is: Marshal Jay AKA: The Magic Dude He shares the same birthday as Houdini so it only seems natural that he’d grow up to become a professional magician. Having traveled all over the U.S. to perform, you’ll find him with his bag of tricks putting on an impressive show that will keep you guessing.
Who it is: Tim Williams AKA: Captain Scalawag Telling stories of his adventures at high seas, look for him in the Scalawagon passing out pirate swag to kids. It was 12 years ago that Williams developed this character that resembles Capt. Jack Sparrow. He is often seen in community theater and on-board charter pirate ships that set sail on the Lake.
Who it is: Chuck Smith AKA: Charcoal Chuck It usually takes about 20 minutes to have your portrait drawn by this life-long artist. Free for children ages 10 and younger, and $10 for adults. Smith has an art degree from Missouri State University and was an art teacher in Crocker.

F
or H. Dwight Weaver, known as the premier Lake of the Ozarks historian, it all began with caves. As a child and young adult he was obsessed with caves and caving. That eventually led Weaver to adult jobs in the area’s commercial caves, several books on the subject, and a career with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Most recently he was the Public Information Officer for the DNR’s Division of Geology. Since retiring from DNR in 2000, Weaver has written seven books on Lake of the Ozarks history and has become the go-to person for anyone who wants to know about former resorts between 1931 to 1981 and other Lake history during those years.
Q. The history of the Lake of the Ozarks doesn’t have very much to do with caves. How did you become THE lake historian? A. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, I fished with my dad below Bagnell Dam. I wasn’t much interested in fishing but I was very interested in what was inside the dam, and what was under the Lake. In 1965 I joined the Camden County Historical Society because I was intrigued with the Lake’s history. At the historical society I met a lot of Old Linn Creek people and I began collecting everything I could find — pictures, postcards, brochures, chamber of commerce publications — anything that could provide me with vintage Lake information. When I retired, I knew I couldn’t continue caving due to age and health problems, and one day I was looking at my huge collection and thought: “This is a visual history of the Lake of the Ozarks and I need to share it.” Q. So you began writing? A. I heard about Arcadia Press and saw some of their books — full of pictures and

history of various places. I contracted with them to do two books in their Images of America series. Each book was to have at least 200 vintage images. I now have three books published by Arcadia. Q. What was your first “Lake” book? A. I had to figure out how to organize this vast wealth of materials. I decided to follow the roads around the Lake, and that’s how “Lake of the Ozarks, The Early Years” (2000) evolved. The text included construction of the dam and followed Highways 54 and 5 around the Lake. Then I did the second one, “Lake of the Ozarks, Vintage Vacation Paradise,” which came out in 2002. The books did well and I got a lot of emails and phone calls from people who wanted to know more. Q. What happened next? A. I started the “History and Geography of the Lake of the Ozarks series,” which I published myself. There are now two volumes in that series. I’ve also published “Historic Bagnell Dam Boulevard, Past & Present,” and “A Pictorial Guide to Ha Ha Tonka State Park.”
Q. What is your best seller? A. They have all done well and continue to be popular. Among the books sold at Ha Ha Tonka State Park, my trail guide is the park’s best seller. It’s basically a then-and-now trail guide containing both vintage and contemporary scenes at the park. Q. Who buys your books? A. Most of the people who buy my books have been coming to the Lake for many years and have many fond memories of old resorts they want to see images of and read about. Q. You seem fairly passionate about Lake history. Why is that? A. Because it’s a place of ephemeral businesses and a vanishing arcadia. Lake history is problematic. So many of the early business people and resorts are now gone. Many early Lake entrepreneurs would own and operate a place for 10 or 15 years then die, sell out, or move on and often their old resorts would be renamed or torn down. It’s the kind of history that’s easily lost. My collection contains a lot of scarce, even rare material. My wife, Rosie, and I continually clip obituaries and collect early ads because the ads are often the only footprints the early businesses left behind. The collection is ongoing. Q. What will happen to all those materials you have collected? A. My collection of historic materials is my legacy for the people of the Lake of the Ozarks region. My database contains images and information on more than 1,000 former resorts along the Lake in Camden, Miller, Morgan and Benton counties. The Missouri State Archives has expressed an interest in the collection and so I plan to leave it to them so it will all be saved for posterity. Q. What’s next? A. I’m now working on the vintage history of the North Shore and the West Side of the Lake. The West Side is so strung out it will probably take more than one book to cover it. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

ames Clay lives to be outside of the comfort zone. “I really like to stretch myself. It makes me a better musician,” he says. “I don’t want to get stuck in a rut and do the same thing for 20 years.” A lead singer and guitar player in four bands, Clay has the ability to experiment creating a unique experience for his audiences. Since each band has a different style, it never grows old, he says. From alternative, psychobilly, electric pop and bluegrass, these bands draw quite a following of fans who turn up at their performances held all around the Lake. The only genres of music Clay won’t touch — new pop country and hip hop.
Playing in bands since the age of 17, Clay signed his first record deal at 22 and started touring in Europe and the United States. He opened on tour as a solo acoustic act for Salvador, Tree63, Bethany Dillon, Shaun McDonald, and Shane and Shane. After 24 months on the road he took a year off to do a little “soul searching.” But he didn’t stay away for long. While living at Lake of the Ozarks in 2006 he began writing songs for a Nashville-based publishing company. It was during his songwriting career that he started performing regularly in the Lake area as a solo artist. When the company he was writing songs for folded, his number of appearances around the Lake increased. He began developing different bands — the Creekers, and Life of the Party to name a few — all with a unique and individual sound. “I love being in the entertainment
industry. When I see a crowd out having a good time, that’s my payoff,” Clay said. In 2013, he won a local competition for the Country Showdown, America’s largest country music talent search, and is currently working on putting out a record to be released this year. Now that he’s made his mark as a musician, Clay has branched out from being an entertainer to the world of management. “Music is such a part of my life. I’ve found a way to parlay it into my profession as well,” he said. In October 2015, he formed Unlimited World Entertainment. The Camdenton-based entertainment company books, budgets, promotes and manages the scheduling of artists for venues in the Lake area. Through UWE they booked and coordinated almost 600 shows, including many national acts, this summer.

Hayley Nicole Blair and Nathane Adam Simniok were married May 28, 2016 at the First Baptist Church in Camdenton. Hayley is the daughter of Chuck and Sonnie Blair of Bolivar, Mo. Nathane is the son of Cathy Simniok and the late William Simniok of Forsyth, Mo. Nathane graduated from College of the Ozarks in 2014 and is currently employed as a fleet manager with Prime Inc. of Springfield, Mo. Hayley graduated from College of the Ozarks in 2014 and is currently teaching in the Lebanon R-III School District and coaching volleyball and basketball.

I
t was their love for Lake of the Ozarks that brought them together. Both are drawn to the water, family time, and the memories that it brings. It was in 2013 when they met. Kirby has been wakeboarding since the age of 7 and owns Kirby’s School of Wake in Osage Beach. On Wednesday he holds a wakechurch — where people get together to wakesurf and a devotional at dusk. Sydney attended the event and knew immediately he was the one. After a year of friendship and a year of dating long-distance, the couple went to Cabo San Lucas for spring break with friends. Thinking they were going surfing they woke up early where Sydney was led to a private lookout point. Kirby proposed as the sun rose over the ocean. “With pristine, soft, lush green grass and a stone cross overlooking the city and the ocean you couldn’t help but not see God’s love in that place. Kirby proposed before the cross right as the most colorful, vibrant sunrise rose from the horizon saying, ‘I love you and want to honor you before the cross for the rest of our lives.’” Sydney said. With its new reception hall and plenty of space to get ready, the couple chose Seven Springs Winery in Linn Creek for the location of their ceremony and reception. On October 10, 2015, 225 guests joined them as they said “I do.” “My most memorable part of the day was our first dance,” Sydney said. They had spent many hours practicing having taken dance lessons at La Roca Dance Studio. “The most memorable part of the day to me was taking photos in the vineyard,” Kirby said. “In the craziness of the day, getting to step into the quiet to take it all in with my new wife was a really special moment.” The couple went on a cruise to the Bahamas for their honeymoon. They live in Camdenton and both work at Kirby’s School of Wake. “We are best friends and he is the love of my life. We pray together over the good and tackle the tough things in life and we see change. I’m so grateful to be in this position,” Sydney said. “God has been so good to us. What makes our marriage strong and our love so deeply rooted is the fact that we built our relationship on Christ and let Him lead us together.”

Lake Regional Receives $100,000 donation Lake Regional Health System honored its hospital volunteers during the annual Auxiliary luncheon held to coincide with National Health Care Volunteer Week. At the luncheon, the volunteers were recognized for contributing a total of more than 64,000 service hours to the hospital in 2015. Individuals also were recognized for total hours contributed to the hospital throughout their volunteer service. Top honors went to Bea Roggy for 10,000 service hours and to Jim Black, Georgia Cantwell, Carolyn Jahr, Herb Jahr and Dorothy Scrocco for 6,000 service hours. A Lifetime Achievement award was given to Vickie Hilton, who has 5,000 service hours. During the luncheon, Auxiliary President Betty Coleman presented a check for $100,000 to Lake Regional Health System CEO Michael E. Henze on behalf of the Auxiliary. The funds were raised through sales at Lake Regional’s gift shops, as well as through various fundraising events.

Ruth and John Kenyon from KK Jewelers received an engraved plate and certificate of appreciation from the Osage Beach Senior Center for their part in helping the senior meal program. The senior center recognizes KK Jewelers for its support toward providing 100 meals to congregate and homebound seniors in the Lake area. The senior center serves meals every day of the week.
Glencove Marina Joins the Big Thunder Marine family Glencove Marina is now a part of Big Thunder Marine group. The change of ownership began this spring, and the marina continues to operate from its 3-mile marker location in Lake Ozark off of Carol Road. Glencove Marina was founded in 1984 by Ron Thompson. Bruce and Sherry Jackson have been the owners since April of 2011. “Bruce and I are very excited to be part of this and can’t wait to see what the future brings” Sherry Jackson said. The Glencove employees are all invited on board this venture and I couldn’t be happier because they truly are some of the best in the business. Bruce and I have been focused on customer service for the past five years and we believe we have found someone else who also believes that the customers and employees are equally as important to a successful business.” “This addition will allow us to bring an even greater level of service to the lake area.
