From the Editor REMEMBERING THE PAST, EMBRACING THE FUTURE

A

couple of things have put Lake of the Ozarks on the map (so to speak) lately. The Netflix series “Ozark,” which, due to my busy schedule, I just finished watching. And now a new book by retired TV personality Bill Geist. “Lake of the Ozarks: My Surreal Summers in a Vanishing America” is a memoir detailing his experiences when he worked at his Uncle Ed’s roadside resort in Lake Ozark. It was the 1960s when things were much different at the Lake. As many of you may know, Bill had a segment on CBS Sunday Morning for more than 30 years before retiring from the show in September 2018. Each week he would feature a person or place, usually from small-town America, that would fall into the category of odd and unusual. It made for interesting television. I had the pleasure of interviewing Bill about his book a few days after it came out. He’s everything you would expect — witty and kind, but also carries with him cpatires@lakemediaonline.com a vast knowledge of Lake of the Ozarks. Not only was the Lake his home for seven summers during his high school and college years, he’s been back a few times since then with his family and most recently, for a reunion of former Arrowhead Lodge employees. Unfortunately the reunion took place after the 1930s business had met its demise and had been demolished leaving nothing but a vacant lot. He says visiting the spot on Bagnell Dam Boulevard was sad and full of emotion but he knows that change is inevitable. Bill and I have a lot in common. I’ve always had an appreciation for the stranger things in life, seeking them out when I travel and even right here at home. I appreciate places that have more of a “story” to tell. People love the lure of the Lake’s history. Walking the Strip visiting some of the first souvenir shops and restaurants at the Lake. Seeing Bagnell Dam, where it all began. Touring historic Willmore Lodge. Hiking to the castle ruins at Ha Ha Tonka. The list goes on and on. Our past is what shapes us today so when I heard about a few projects in the area to renovate historic businesses, I couldn’t wait to see the end result. We feature two in particular that date back to the 30s. They are open this season, albeit new and improved, but much of the historic charm was maintained. We certainly can’t return to those simpler times but it does reminds me that maybe we should all slow down a bit, enjoy our surroundings and the people who are with us. You know…live for the moment. Enjoy your summer at the Lake and make some memories to last a lifetime!

From the Publisher

FIRST IMPRESSIONS HAVE MADE BIG IMPRESSIONS

A

s the new guy on the block, I confess there was a lot I didn’t know about the Lake of the Ozarks before coming here. I knew it was a tourist area in the middle of Missouri. But, wow! That’s like saying the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is a nice little painting. I had no idea the area was so enormous and the beauty so grand – even after watching the “Ozark” series on Netflix. The people I’ve met have also made a big impression. They’re friendly and welcoming and genuine. It helped, of course, that my first encounter with many locals took place at a big party – Lake Lifestyles’ Best of the Lake celebration in May at Shawnee Bluff Vineyard. I appreciate the heartwarming welcome I received from so many. It is my professional pleasure to oversee Lake Lifestyles magazine as Senior Group Publisher with GateHouse Media. Along with the magazine’s sister publications in the area, this family of products is deeply ingrained in the fabric of the region, which is evident by the strong support of advertisers. As way of introduction, I’ve worked in the media industry for 32 years since graduating with a marketing degree from New Mexico State jleong@gatehousemedia.com University. My current responsibilities with GateHouse also include oversight of publications in southwest Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. As you can imagine, I’m on the road a lot, but always in touch. My wife, Linda, and I recently celebrated our 32nd anniversary. We have three children, and with our youngest in college, we’re now empty-nesters. My leisure activities of swimming, CrossFit and yoga fit in well here, and I’m looking forward to adding boating to the list. And about my name … Leong – you might not have seen that name around midMissouri. My father is of full Chinese heritage and grew up in Hawaii, where he met my mother (a Smith from Michigan). It’s pronounced lee-ong. But you can call me Joe. I’m excited for you to see this issue. We feature historic buildings that have been revitalized into thriving businesses, including a trendy new restaurant, 1932 Reserve. And you’ll get re-acquainted with “Star Search” champion Jake Simpson, who is back home from L.A. and thrilling his fans in local venues. In our next issue, look for an article on retiring at the Lake, as well as our annual Builders’ Showcase section. You can be sure that Lake Lifestyles magazine will continue to play a vital role of informing and entertaining area residents to promote a robust community. I welcome your feedback and suggestions for future issues. Thanks for spending time with Lake Lifestyles! Joe Leong jleong@gatehousemedia.com

he Lake has beauty and charms to delight, but most tourists, fishermen, and water sports fans aren’t content to just look at the water. They want to be on it and in it, splashing, fishing, and tubing. If you don’t own a boat, or have a close friend you can tag along with, your only other option is to rent one. The Lake’s rental businesses list boats, both tritoon and deck, PWCs, kayaks, and accessories such as life jackets, skis, and tubes. Some also have standup paddleboards and even float mats. Like gas docks and marinas, rental businesses are easy to find. Delivering the fun and fuel on the Osage Arm at the

35-mile marker is Pirate’s Point. Some resorts lease boats, too — usually only to guests, and one such resort, Lake Breeze, is on the Niangua Arm at the 2.5-mile marker. Pointe Oasis Resort and Marina (13 MM), is located in a cove off the Main Channel. It has its own rental inventory of tritoons and PWCs. Near Bagnell Dam is Mike Fink’s Marina, Leisure Lake, and Point Randall Resort. All great options. Dirty Duck rentals is located near the Grand Glaize Bridge at the 17.5mile marker. Boat rental businesses with multiple locations around the Lake include Bombay Boats, Adventure Boat Rentals, Iguana and many others.

These rental businesses and resorts provide so many quality options for Lake of the Ozarks’ boaters and many of them offer a one-click option that could save you time. Another online resource is GetMyBoat.com where there are 130,000 boats of all types in 184 countries. The website lists several rentals available on the Lake including a houseboat, tritoon, deck boat, personal water craft (PWC), sailboat, kayaks, yacht, and bass boat with prices ranging from $6 an hour for a 12-foot, 2-person kayak to $6,000 a day for a motor yacht. If you are planning to rent a boat at Lake of the Ozarks for the day, make time to do a little research to find the right location and pricepoint for you and your family.

RENTAL CHECKLIST 1. Pack ID and the required boat certification. If you plan

to drive and are born after January 1, 1984, you’ll need a Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card. Local classes are available but boaters can also qualify by completing an online course at Boat-Ed.com/Missouri. For other age and safety requirements, review details provided by Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council (LOTOWSC).

2. B ook a certified captain. When lessees want a cap-

tain for the boat, they can consult with the Lake of the Ozarks Captain Association (LOTOCA), a nonprofit group of US Coast Guard licensed captains operating vessels on the Lake and other Missouri waters.

3. Be clear about expectations. When reserving a boat

with or without a captain, be clear and specific about hours, dates, pickup and drop-off locations, and accessories needed to maximize the fun-quotient.

4. P ack snacks and drinks for the day, making sure to

honor contractual requirements about prohibited foods or drinks. Most important of all, bring plenty of water. Being on the water under the sun dehydrates people so they need to hydrate throughout the day.

5. Wear life jackets. All children under 7 must wear a US

Coast Guard approved life jacket when on docks, on boats, and in the water — at all times. LOTOWSC recommends a life jacket on all adults as well because life jackets help keep heads above water if a swimmer tires or if a boat capsizes.

6. Don’t drink and drive a boat. Boating while intoxicated is against the law. Designate a sober captain or hire a captain if drinking spirits while on the water.

7. Pack and use sunscreen often. Add hats and sunglasses to the supplies as the sun reflecting off the water can burn scalps, skin, and eyes.

8. B e courteous. In most cases, it’s better to be safe than

right. Safety includes assuming that some may not know they should pass on the right (just as they would on a highway) when approaching an oncoming boat. Others may not realize that they should always yield to sailing vessels as they cannot maneuver as easily or quickly as motorized vessels.

9. Know where to find and stow safety devices such a

throwable personal floatation device (PFD) and fire extinguishers. All should be in plain sight and easily accessed, especially the throwable device.

10. K now how to avoid a fine when towing tubers and

skiers. The orange flag should be aloft and visible only when someone is in the water. The flag alerts other boaters to slow and look out for people in the water. It should not be held aloft while towing anyone.

* Some tips provided by Val Streif, head of marketing for GetMyBoat.com. 16

PEDAL POWER

KAYAK FIS HING IS TH E NEW TRE ND FOR AN GLERS

BY JOHN NEPORADNY JR.

E

ngine-powered boats dominate the fishing scene at Lake of the Ozarks but some anglers are discovering they can catch bass from a kayak at the Lake. Kayak bass fishing has grown rapidly in the past 10 years as a result of tournament circuits now holding events for kayak owners. The Lake of the Ozarks hosted a Mo Yak Fishing Tournament Series event in April with a field of 43

anglers fishing in kayaks. Kayaks were once considered a small waters craft for fishing in remote areas, but kayak manufacturers are now building larger and wider boats with better stability and pedal-driven systems that allow anglers to fish larger waters such as Lake of the Ozarks. Kayaks have become so stable now that anglers can actually stand and fish without tipping over. The Lake’s massive size gives kayak

anglers plenty of options to fish from Truman Dam to Bagnell Dam. “You have a bunch of different types of areas that you can fish and kind of get away from the normally busy areas,” says Jeff Mellencamp, a Mo Yak Fishing Tournament Series competitor. “You can get back in a creek channel or go up the river. That is what I like doing.” LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

17

Mellencamp’s favorite areas to fish from his kayak are the Little Niangua Arm and the Ha Ha Tonka area on the upper Niangua. The Camdenton angler recommends using a kayak 12 feet or longer for fishing the Lake. He fishes in a Hobie Pro Angler 14, a 14-foot kayak with the stability he needs for navigating on the Lake and plenty of storage room. “I can handle waves and carry all my stuff in it,” Mellencamp says. With a longer and wider kayak, anglers can fish the same open waters of the Lake where bass boats roam, yet the smaller crafts can also put anglers in remote areas that are inaccessible for bass boats. Hobie kayaks are also equipped with the revolutionary MirageDrive, a pedal system that replaces the paddle for propelling the kayak. His pedal-driven kayak allows Mellencamp to cover water quicker and steering handles on the Hobie lets him navigate virtually hands-free. Anchors also can be mounted on the boats. Other accessories kayak anglers can add to their rigs include storage crates such as the Jackson Kayak JKrate, Hobie H-Crate or the YakGear Kayak Angler Crate Kit. The YakGear basic crate kit features a crate, a double rod holder, accessory pouch, 3.3pound grapnel anchor kit, anchor cleat and mounting hardware. Television fishing celebrity and twotime Bassmaster Classic Champ Hank Parker has become a kayak bass fishing aficionado. When he first started using a Hobie kayak, Parker wasn’t used to sitting and fishing from a lower position and closer to the water, so he had to make some adjustments to work lures properly. He suggests newcomers to kayak fishing just need to spend some time getting used to fishing at a different angle. “The boat itself probably only stands up off the water about 18 to 20 inches so when you are in the kayak you are up another 2 1/2 feet,” he says. “So you are 4 feet off the water instead of 6 or 6 1/2 feet (in a bass boat).” Parker says there are some advantages to fishing closer to the water.

“The wind doesn’t catch your line and move it because you are low to the water so I point my rod down and keep it low,” he says. Since he has his rod lower without any slack in his line, Parker can also generate a smoother and quicker hook set when fishing from a kayak than he can in a bass boat. Sitting closer to the water in a kayak also works to Parker’s advantage when he is throwing topwater lures in clear water. He believes his lower profile prevents spooking fish in the clear water. A stealthy approach is another advantage kayaks have over bass boats. Parker notes the MirageDrive on his Hobie kayak is much quieter than a trolling motor. “If you pedal really fast then the fish will hear you, but you can make the pedal noise non-existent if you just take short strokes,” Parker says. While bass boats remain the standard vessel for bass fishing at the Lake of the Ozarks, kayaks are developing a following from anglers wanting to catch bass from remote parts of the Lake. The Hobie Pro Angler 14 has handsfree propulsion so you can keep your fishing rod in your hands.

WORLD’S BIGGEST CASINO Never been to Thackerville, Oklahoma? Well, me either but it is now on my radar of places to visit. A mere 7 ½ hours from the Lake, nestled along I-35 at the Oklahoma/Texas border, you will find the world’s largest casino, the WinStar World Casino and Resort. If you like gambling, golf and entertainment … this is the place. The Chickasaw Nation in 1991 opened a bingo hall where the WinStar World Casino is located today. Expansion really took off in 2003 with the introduction of electronic gaming to the bingo hall, and in 2006 the first of their two championship golf courses was opened. In 2008 the facility was rebranded the WinStar World Casino. The resort features a 3,500 seat Global Event Center, a 15-acre/160-pad RV Park, just under 1,400 rooms, a 67,000-square-foot convention center, numerous restaurants, bars and nightclubs, 36 holes of championship golf, a world-class spa, dozens of shopping options and nine-globally themed gaming plazas stretching along

a mile of gaming floor. WinStar’s 36 holes of championship golf were designed by golf course designer and PGA tour player D.A. Weibring and Wolfard Golf Design. In 2017 the final 9 holes was opened completing the expansion to 36 holes featuring two distinct venues: the Redbud Course and the Scissortail Course. Both feature TifSport Bermuda fairways and MiniVerde Bermuda greens for excellent playing conditions in any season. Located among the hills of the Red River Valley and carved out of the native Blackjack Oaks, the courses can play as long as 7,100 yards or as short as 5,000 making them playable and enjoyable for all skill levels. The facility also features the WinStar Golf Academy with several PGA Professionals available for lessons using the latest technology with a Trackman Golf Launch Monitor and indoor putting studio to hone your game. When you’re not out on the links take in a show at the Global Events Center with acts such as Jerry Seinfeld, Chicago and

Sugarland. You can relax at one of the fabulous pools with private cabanas or get a massage in the spa. Restaurants, bars and nightlife are abundant from casual fare like IHOP or Panda Express to the Gran Viva Buffet and Toby Keith’s I Love this Bar and Grill. If you want an elegant evening out try Kirby’s Prime Steakhouse or Mickey Mantle’s. Show off your dance moves at the MIST or enjoy a cocktail at the Rotunda Bar. If sports are more your thing, hit the Palladium Sports Lounge to watch the biggest games on a multitude of screens while enjoying your favorite beverage. I’m not sure one night will suffice if you want to fully enjoy the World’s Biggest Casino! Plan ahead and take in all they have to offer by spending a few days enjoying golf, the pools, the nightlife and the craps tables! If you’re a football fan WinStar is now the official casino of the Dallas Cowboys! Paul Leahy is a PGA golf professional and the director of golf at The Oaks at Margaritaville Lake Resort.

A lasting

LAKE LIFESTYLES // JULY/AUGUST 2019

L

ake of the Ozarks has experienced nothing but growth and change since it all began in the 1930s. And while many businesses have come and gone, many others are still around. Historic businesses like Stewart’s Restaurant on the Bagnell Dam Strip or Blair’s Landing in Osage Beach have been serving customers for generations. So have many lodging facilities and golf courses. These places have undergone many renovations, changes in ownership and other improvements to enhance the experience for their guests and keep up with the times. This includes updating their iconic looks through their logos. A good logo is often the first impression clients will have of your business. It makes all the difference in marketing and branding your product. Whether you are selling shoes, beverages or even golf, a great logo can set you apart from your competition.

Lake of the Ozarks was home to one of the most recognizable logos in the Midwest for the past 50 years in Tan-TarA. It seemed like everywhere you went someone had the sun and branch logo of Tan-Tar-A on their shirt or hat. With Tan-Tar-A rebranded as Margaritaville Lake Resort they had the opportunity to change their identity and logo. Having the luxury of partnering with another iconic brand and image in Margaritaville, the golf course and resort should transition seamlessly. There is no mistaking the

Parrot logo and what it represents to the entire brand and legions of Parrotheads around the country. If all goes well, Margaritaville will soon be as synonymous with Lake of the Ozarks as Tan-Tar-A was for so many years. The Lodge of Four Seasons is another property that recently revised its logo as part of its resort renovations. The focus of the redesign of the logo was to implement a strong logo for the award-winning hotel and golf courses that would be reflective of their unmistakable quality and

uniqueness, according to Lodge officials. “Our desire was to emphasize a genuine and authentic image honoring the storied history of the resort,” Jim Cleary, Chief Operating Officer of the Lodge of Four Seasons, said. Osage National has gone through a few changes over its 25-plus years to include an entire name change from North Port National to Osage National Golf Resort. As the resort and course have evolved, so has the logo. Old Kinderhook has gone through the same process to capture the look and feel that best describes their facility in one image. It is sometimes difficult to create that lasting impression with guests, and that is what makes a brand and image so important to the success of any business or product. As we all know, a logo is a company’s visual identity simplified into an icon. Think of some of the most iconic and most recognizable logos that are so recognizable they don’t even need words — McDonalds, Apple, Fed Ex, Pepsi, Coke…these logos are recognized all over the world. The golf industry is no different when it comes to branding. An iconic image that differentiates you from the competition can elevate your club above the rest. The logo must be compelling enough to invite people to choose you from over hundreds of equally well-branded options. Whether it is just a golf course, a resort or private country club, branding is a key component in the success of any golf course. Think of the course or resort images that come to your mind: Augusta National, Kapalua, TPC Sawgrass, St. Andrews and Pebble Beach, to name a few. All of these iconic logos bring thoughts of spectacular golf, beautiful scenery, fun and excitement. How many 100th anniversary PGA Championship shirts from the tournament hosted at Bellerive last summer have you seen? I’ve seen hundreds and that’s because you went to see the tournament or watched it on TV and wanted to let people know you were there. Whether it’s the shields of the Eldon Golf Club or Lake Valley Golf Club, the bear of Bear Creek Valley Golf Club, the deer of The Golf Club at Deer Chase and Redfield Golf Club, or the Parrot of Margaritaville Lake Resort, these logos say something about the brand. Day Trip

A WATER Y PARADISE

— BUT WHAT IF IT RAINS? BY KAREN THORNTON

LAKE LIFESTYLES // JULY/AUGUST 2019

ou came to the Lake to play in the water, to forget about work, and the daily grind. You are looking forward to tubin’, boatin’, noodlin’, and covin’ out for a few days with family and friends — but the 70+ degree water is not exactly where you want to be if it’s raining. If you came with family, they are probably frustrated. If you invited friends, you are probably frustrated. On to “Plan B”… We give you plenty of suggestions so don’t give up on the weekend just yet. Here are a few ways to still have fun at the Lake, even if it rains.

1.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

A great inside place to visit is the historic Willmore Lodge. Be sure you have your camera ready, the views are amazing. If the rain stops long enough you can take a stroll on the path through the lakeside gardens. A tailgate lunch or even a picnic would be enjoyable while you are there. Be sure you pick up a free area map. If you have any questions there is a very helpful local concierge to assist. The Lodge has a great history of the Lake with a walkthrough, self-guided tour. Be sure to check the hours you plan to go.

2.

STROLL THE STRIP

On your way, stop by Stewart’s Restaurant, serving breakfast since the early 1950s. They are home to the largest cinnamon rolls you’ve ever seen. As you move along the historic Bagnell Dam Strip, you will want to stop by any of the unique shops located along the way to pick up a few things for the folks you left back home. Dogpatch is a must, enjoy one of the rockers out front while the shoppers are inside. The Strip has a variety of unique shops. Rain or shine you will want to plan a stroll to visit every one. And there are tons of places to eat. A great “off the water” restaurant is Tucker Shucker’s offering fresh oysters and a selection of 28 tap beers. They have balcony seating for people watching (the tourists, of course.) The Strip offers many activities for the adults and the family with a variety of entertainment and dining choices. I am sure you won’t have trouble choosing a

spot to get in out of the rain or the sun. Make time for a quick stop at Grandma’s Candy Kitchen for a “tasting” — of fudge that is. They have a very large selection of candy and you can watch as they make fudge. Can you believe there are approximately 40 flavors of taffy to choose from? There are also sugar-free options. Local tip: Look for coupon books at information racks in most local restaurants or hotels where you might be able to find a coupon offering 1/2 pound of free fudge.

3.

INDOOR MOVIE What about a movie at Eagles Landing 8 Cinema? Through August the theater offers a Summer Film Series for the

family when admission is only $3. If it rains on Tuesdays (you could only hope), for $5 you can get a box of popcorn and enjoy a movie. There are specials almost every day of the week. While you are in the area, grab a bite to eat at one of the many diverse restaurants. If you are in the mood for Italian, Li’l Rizzo’s serves a great pizza and it is very family friendly. If you are looking for BBQ and you brought your bib, HalfSauced Barbeque, right on Osage Beach Pkwy., is unforgettable.

4.

RETAIL THERAPY

If it hasn’t stopped raining, head on down Highway 54 to the Osage Beach Outlet Markeplace. The Outlet shops have many current brands of clothing and lots of sale items. The Lake also has unique boutiques tucked in the surrounding area. If you are

Newest boast is the largest indoor elevated electric go-kart track in the U.S. The kids will want to go even if the sun is out, and the family will be ready for a nap at day’s end.

6.

EAT & DRINK

If you haven’t had lunch yet or it’s time for dinner, there are many other restaurants to choose from including these popular spots: Vista Grande, PaPPo’s Pizzeria and Pub, and Wobbly Boots. You know the saying “Location, Location, Location?” If you can’t be on the water, at least be by the water. Enjoy a Lake view at Dog Days, one of the top rated waterfront restaurants and they have a pool (which you can enjoy between rain drops). Backwater Jack’s has entertainment most weekends and a great pool with a swim-up bar where

you can order fresh sushi. Ask about their fried potato salad. Yes, fried. In either of these places you can eat in and still enjoy the Lake. If you didn’t bring any kids along, Ozark Distillery and Brewery has an amazing tour for $5 per person which includes tastings of their many products. The structure looks like an 1800-era saloon. They are the oldest “legal distillery” in Camden County. Their claim-to-fame is the traditional method of making Ozark Moonshine with Missouri grown corn. Tours sell out quickly, so book in advance.

EXPLORE

Did you know that Missouri is not only known as the Show Me State, but also as the Cave State? A cave is created with plenty of limestone, a mineral that cannot be dissolved in groundwater. Geologists state you need water flowing downhill to provide “relief” which is uneven land, such as we have here in the Lake of the Ozarks. There are many

GO FISH

Did you ever think about fishing in the rain? Of course we aren’t advocating fishing during a lightning storm, but just because it’s raining doesn’t mean you can’t throw a line in. Rain breaks up the surface, creates current, and flushes nutrients into a waterbody – all things that create the perfect opportunity to get the catch of the day.

Ameren Tips for

WATCHING YOUR WAKE Here are some tips to help prevent boat wake damage and possible injuries to your crew and other boaters

SLOW DOWN EARLY

Boat wakes travel long distances, so slow down before you reach a slow-speed zone, dock or other navigational hazard— don’t wait until you have passed the no-wake buoy, marker or structure. Stay at least 100 feet from all docks and structures.

SLOWING DOWN A LITTLE ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH

When entering a no-wake zone, some boaters react by slowing the vessel only slightly and then plowing through with the bow way up and stern dug down. Plowing through the water causes increased wake. Come completely off plane to idle speed.

GET LEVEL

A slowed or idle-speed vessel should be level in the water. A properly planed boat also should be level. Heavy plowing boats that tend to plow even on plane should stay in the center of the channel, and consider coming off plane to no-wake speed before entering smaller coves and tight navigation ways or nearing docks off the main channel.

WALLS AND WAVE BREAKS MAKE IT WORSE

Just as shallow water can increase wake size, seawalls and breakwaters can exacerbate wave action. Keep the proper distance between you and wave breaks, seawalls and natural bluffs during times of heavy boat traffic.

SMALL BOATS AREN’T ALWAYS INNOCENT

Wakes are not just a big boat issue—small vessels in the stern-down position can throw surprisingly large wakes. Even if your boat is small, don’t plow. Either reduce to no-wake speed or plane out to reduce your wake size.

WHEN APPROACHING A LARGE WAKE, SLOW DOWN

Motorboats are more stable when underway, so stopping could make things worse. Avoid taking a wake on the beam or side. The best approach is to slice the wake at a slight angle.

BE AWARE OF YOUR CREW

Many wake-related boating injuries happen to those seated near the bow when the boat slams into a wake. Keep very young passengers closer to the stern or middle of the boat.

WARN YOUR CREW

A simple, “Hold on; boat wake” should do the trick, if you shout it loud enough and well before the wake arrives.

THE GOOD OL’ DAYS Author and TV host Bill Geist talks about his summers at Lake of the Ozarks

H

e calls it the “Midwestern Shangri-La.” A lively, happy place. A place where you’d make fond memories cruising the Strip, take a scenic cruise on the Larry Don and have a nice meal at Arrowhead Lodge. It was the 1960s at Lake of the Ozarks, and for author/columnist/television journalist Bill Geist it was his home away from home during the summer. Geist has published a new book, “Lake of the Ozarks: My Surreal Summers in a Vanishing America,” and with vivid clarity, and the humor he’s known for, explains his experience from seven summers working at his uncle Ed’s Lake Ozark restaurant and resort, Arrowhead Lodge. Many of Geist’s fans may have never heard of Lake of the Ozarks but the Lake was the place Geist credits for developing a knack for the odd and unusual. For 30 years Geist traveled the country featuring things you never knew existed for his segment on CBS Sunday Morning. And it all started right here at the Lake. “I realized after I retired that the experiences down at the Lake, the characters I met, kinda formed my entire career in

newspapers and television,” Geist said. In over 200 pages, Geist’s book details the many jobs he had at the 42-room resort during his high school and college years. He was assigned to kitchen duty or was put in charge of maintaining the dreaded chili pond (the lodge’s open-air septic system). It was hard to complain, he said, since he earned $5 a day. His job didn’t leave a lot of free time, but when there was a couple of hours to kill they’d walk the Strip, see a show at the Ozark Opry, and because his uncle was a big shot around town, they had great seats at the Camdenton Rodeo. Of course there was plenty of beer drinking and dancing at the hall below Bagnell Dam. As long as they showed up to work at 7 a.m. the next day, nobody really cared what they did, Geist said. “We were as free as we wanted but had a lot of personal responsibility,” Geist said. “I met a lot of characters with big ideas.” He remembers Larry Albright, who would meet up with other entrepreneurs for coffee at the lodge, and while these individuals were thought of as “nuts”, Geist was drawn to them and their gimmicks. They owned businesses that lured in tourists, like the two-headed

deer attraction just outside of Eldon, the underwater mermaid show, and Dogpatch (which is still open today). Geist shares the many memories he made at the Lake — falling in love on the Larry Don, staff pool parties, exploring the Lake and surrounding hillbilly country (down Hwy. 42), and his many other escapades. Those were the days where there were no condos, no golf courses, no hospitals, no stoplights and no law enforcement. He also speaks of the demise of Arrowhead Lodge and how the Lake has changed. Arrowhead Lodge is long gone, torn down in 2007. It had been built in 1936, just a few years after Bagnell Dam was completed. Geist returned to the Lake a few years ago for a reunion with former Arrowhead employees, trading stories and reminiscing. “It was very sad to see it go,” Geist said. Something is gained and something is lost by progress, he noted. Geist said he likes to remind people what it was once like because “you forget.” “I love people and finding out the truth about things. There are fewer insane characters in America than there used to be.” LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

OWNING A PIECE OF HISTORY

Two of the Lake’s oldest resorts open for business

any places have come and gone over the Lake’s 80+ year history. But there are many others still left standing. There’s been a resurgence, of sorts, when it comes to preserving some of the Lake’s nostalgia. Investors are seeing the value in renovating and revitalizing businesses that have been closed up for years. There are two this season that have stood out — the Wein Haus at Michael’s Steak Chalet and 1932 Reserve. Both were a resort at some point, among the oldest at the Lake, and have been turned into upscale businesses. Despite bringing them into the modern age, they’ve kept many remnants and memories of days gone by.

Swiss Village /Hildebrand’s Camp One of the first resorts at Lake of the Ozarks, and one with a floating pool, the property called “Old Swiss Village” has been a lot of things since 1935. It started off as Hildebrand’s Camp where people would come to play, fish and swim. Historian Dwight Weaver says waterskiing didn’t take off at the Lake until the 50s but actually began at Hildebrand’s in 1937. The resort continued to stay open until the early 70s before evolving into several restaurants over the years. 36

LAKE LIFESTYLES // JULY/AUGUST 2019

Located above the 27-mile mark, Michael’s Steak Chalet has now opened the Wein Haus in an adjacent building. Both are historic properties that date back to the 1930s.

Five cabins at the former Hildebrand’s Resort at Old Swiss Village have been completely remodeled but still have some of the old charm from its original construction in the 30s.

In 1994 Brent Boyles and a few of his high school buddies took over one of the buildings where the owner of the resort used to live, and created Michael’s Steak Chalet. While Michael’s, with it’s quality steaks and miles-long view of the Lake has been a local favorite, many of the other buildings around the restaurant have been left vacant. That is, until this year. Boyles and his partners purchased a building next to Michael’s in December 2016 but just completed renovations, opening it as the Wein Haus at Michael’s Steak Chalet. Old photographs from the resort are spread across the bartop, original stained glass windows and other décor have been kept intact for others to enjoy. Open on weekends at 11:30 a.m., higherend wines by the glass or bottle, sangrias, Bloody Mary’s, mimosas and a lunch menu is available. In between the buildings, they added a patio that can accommodate up to 150 people so guests can enjoy the wine and their award-winning view of the Lake.

The cabins Back in the day, these cabins were rented for $1 per person, per day. Trevor Bechtold grew up about a quarter-mile from these cabins, where his parents still live, and purchased one about seven years ago for his family to have as a Lake retreat. The cabins have been there since the 30s and have had many owners since then. He fixed it up and purchased four more cabins which have been completely remodeled and are now available on VBRO for $85-$125/night. Bechtold has an architectural background and was drawn by the history and charm of the cabins. He wanted to bring them back to life. Besides all-new interiors, he kept as much of the original look of the cabins as possible. Earlier this summer, one guest came back for a visit, 40 years after having stayed in one of the cabins.

A look at the project right before it opened in June.

Franklin Lodge/Osage Beach Lodge The Lake’s oldest known hotel is once again taking reservations. Developers Joey Denny, Mark Spears and Shaun Hill have painstakingly renovated the Franklin Lodge, also known as the Osage Beach Lodge, into a modern, yet casual restaurant, with loft-style rentals — all while trying to maintain as much of the historical appeal as possible. For the past 15-or-so years, Hill had been admiring the building from afar, recognizing its potential and hoping something would be done to the run-down building before it was too late. That day came in the Spring of 2018 when all three partners decided to purchase it. Built in 1932, some of the original building was salvaged during the construction process. Hardware from doors, original subfloor, lights, stone masonry, and other unique features have been cleaned up, repurposed and reused. The original wood floor was used to make the bar and a hostess station where you will find old markings and stamps on the wood reminding guests of what was once the old Franklin Lodge. 1932 Reserve serves up handcrafted cocktails from fresh-squeezed juices and has a great selection of fine liquor. At left, the original lights have been relocated and hang just above the indoor bar.

Located down Proctor Road in Osage Beach, at the 17-mile marker by water, 1932 Reserve opened up to the masses in June. The restaurant serves craft cocktails and offers a farm-to-table menu. The selection includes a Beet Salad and other greens, appetizers like the Cauliflower Fritti, Mussels and Fries, steak, sea bass, a burger, and not-your-typical sides like brussel sprouts and jumbo asparagus. Fresh ingredients combined with seasonings and sauces with personality make each dish unique and give it that upscale flair. The restaurant is open daily at noon but hours and menu items may change. On the outside, covered seating, two bocce ball courts and an outdoor bar and bathrooms (made out of large shipping containers) has been completed. New docks and a parking lot were also added. The Reserve Lofts are still being completed. The penthouse unit has six bedrooms but there will also be a one 40

l and Cindy Mohling were planning to retire in the Lake Okoboji area of Northwest Iowa. They had purchased a small cabin there in 2013 but needed something larger if they intended to live there full time. Their daughter Amber, who lives in the Kansas City area, suggested they look into Lake of the Ozarks since she had visited the area many times with family. For about a year, Al and Cindy toured homes in both locations but it wasn’t until they stumbled across some bluff lots down Lake Road 5-58 that they knew this is where their new home would be. “The lots convinced us that Lake of the Ozarks was the right choice for us,” Al said. At that time the bluff was covered with trees so it was difficult to see the Lake but they loved the large double lot, the beautiful view and the peacefulness of the area. They were also fond of the eagles that fished from trees on their property. Once the lots were purchased, Al and Cindy came down from their home in Cedar Falls, Iowa for a few days each month to clear out small trees and brush, and work on the house plans with architect Don Campbell. Starting with a rough sketch of the house they wanted, it took several attempts to fine-tune the plan before building began. They were impressed with the quality and mission-style doors and trim found in a home built by Matt Ancell, owner of Ancell Construction, so they decided to hire him on as the contractor. The couple has been methodical about the type of details put into the home. For the past year and a half they have been working full-time to incorporate the look they want and were hands-on with the project. Thanks to a rainy spring and summer, completing the landscaping has been delayed but now that the house is almost finished, Al and Cindy say they are looking forward to enjoying their new home with family and friends.

44

LAKE LIFESTYLES // JULY/AUGUST 2019

About the homeowners The couple moved to Lake of the Ozarks almost two years ago from Cedar Falls, Iowa. They both grew up on farms in Iowa and were married in 1980. They have two children, Nathan (who is married to Katie) and Amber (married to Brian), and are expecting their first grandchild in August. Cindy was an elementary school teacher for more than 30 years in addition to taking a few years off to be a full-time mom when the children were young. Al worked for John Deere for almost 40 years in accounting and various management positions in the Power Systems Division. They have joined the Kent Memorial Lutheran Church where they’ve made friends and volunteer in the community through the church. They enjoy boating, kayaking and eating out at local restaurants. To access the Lake, a community dock is located close by and is where their Bennington tri-toon is docked.

ELEGANCE REFINED The homeowners wanted a large lot, paved roads and great views of the Lake in as many rooms as possible. Many refinished vintage and antique furniture pieces can be found throughout the home. Some are old family heirlooms, like the secretary hutch in the living room and the colonnade cabinet in the office.

ROOM TO ENTERTAIN Cabinets, doors, trim and flooring made out of Quarter Sawn Oak were a must for Al and Cindy. The frameless cabinets and granite add an elegant touch to the home.

COMFORT IS KEY Downstairs, guests have a full kitchen and living room to use. Notice the fireplace mantel and bar top. GET YOUR FAMILY READY FOR AN EMERGENCY

BY ANITA HARRISON PR specialist with Lake Regional Health System

I

f there was an emergency, and you were stuck at home for a few days without electricity or water, would you be prepared? “Most of us agree that preparing is a good idea, but it’s easy to put off because we don’t know when an emergency might come,” said Steve Dougan, Lake Regional Emergency Preparedness coordinator. “So give yourself a deadline. Schedule a specific time in the next two weeks when you will prepare for an emergency.” A good place to start is with an emergency kit. Pack items in containers that are easy to grab and carry, such as a duffel bag or one or two camping backpacks. Make it a family project so everyone feels ready to respond.

62

LAKE LIFESTYLES // JULY/AUGUST 2019

BEGIN WITH THESE BASICS: · A three-day supply of nonperishable food and water (about 1 gallon per person per day). · Pet food and extra water for pet. · A can opener and utensils for cooking and eating. · A flashlight and extra batteries. · A hand-crank or battery-powered radio. · A whistle to signal for help. · Extra clothes and shoes. · A first aid kit. · A multipurpose tool. · Blankets or sleeping bags. · Dust mask. · Duct tape and plastic sheeting, in case you need to shelter-in-place. · Sanitation and hygiene items, such as toilet paper and moist towelettes. · Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.

STOP THE BLEED Many different kind of emergencies — from car wrecks to a tornado — could result in a serious bleeding injury. You can learn how to save a life at Stop the Bleed, a free training held at Lake Regional Health System. The next class is 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13. Stop the Bleed encourages members of the general public to become trained, equipped and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. Lake Regional’s Trauma nurse coordinator, Mariah Swinker, R.N., teaches the class at Lake Regional. Registration is required. Call 573-348-8222, or visit lakeregional.com/events.

PREPARED AND HERE FOR YOU No one likes to think about a large-scale emergency in our community, but Lake Regional Health System works to be prepared. “We have developed an emergency response plan, and regular drills let us test that plan and train our staff so we are always ready to serve our community,” Dougan said. In addition, Lake Regional has a Mass

Casualty Incident (MCI) trailer. This enclosed trailer is outfitted with worldwide satellite communication capability and contains medical response equipment for 100 people. Lake Regional takes this resource and staff to various community events, such as the Lake of the Ozarks Air Show and various festivals, to help in case of an emergency.

· Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities. · Missouri map. · Any special items, such as medicines, baby formula and pacifiers, or food and water for pets. · Books, games and puzzles for children. · Photocopies of important documents, such as emergency contacts, insurance policies, birth certificates and a list of medicines. Keep the supplies in a cool, easy-to-access spot and replace the food and water every six months. Rethink the kit once a year to keep up with your family’s changing needs. For more ideas — including a list of first aid essentials — visit the Lake Regional Health Library at lakeregional.com/healthtips. Select “disaster preparedness” from the topic menu.

ATTRACT STORY BY CHARIS PATIRES PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVE GUM/PHOTOS BY GUM

Julie and Eric Riley met in middle school at Jefferson City Junior High but they both went their separate ways as adults. Five years ago they reconnected, and according to Eric, it was the perfect fit. On November 25, 2017 Eric proposed before dinner at the Capital Grill located at the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. Both graduates of Jefferson City High School, Lake of the Ozarks was the perfect place to have the wedding since it is close to family and friends.

Wedding colors were black, ivory and red. Julie and her daughter made the table numbers, and Julie designed all of the flowers and decorations. Priscilla Hays, the wedding planner at Margaritaville Lake Resort, surprised Julie with drop chandeliers and dotted lighting to add even more to the room on the day of the wedding. “For me it was all special — making practically everything ourselves and the time we spent together while doing it,” Julie says. Dessert was a variety of cupcakes and a small cake with a topper ordered online that is a silhouette of the couple with their two dogs. “I loved it,” Julie says. “They are a big part of our lives.” 70

LAKE LIFESTYLES // JULY/AUGUST 2019

On August 25, 2018 the couple said “I Do” at Tan-Tar-A Resort, now Margaritaville Lake Resort. An outdoor ceremony took place with just over 100 guests attending. Back in 2001 Julie had been planning events with Tan-Tar-A so she was well acquainted with all the property had to offer. “I decided within the first couple of years of working with them, if I ever got married, I wanted to do it there,” Julie said. “As the years went by, I assumed I probably wouldn’t get married, and as I got older if I did get married, it would be really low key. They made all my dreams come true at 45. They went above and beyond to make our day special and made me feel like a queen for the day. It was more than we could ever imagine.” Between Priscilla Hays, the wedding planner at Margaritaville Lake Resort, and Jessica Hinton, her stylist at Bella Donna Salon, Julie says they helped make her wedding a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “I made two great friends that I am so thankful to have in my life,” Julie says. “We were complete strangers before the wedding and having both of them by my side, helping me make all of these decisions, being patient … to have the friendship we currently have is priceless.” The couple spent their honeymoon at one of their favorite spots — Orange Beach, Ala. They reside in Jefferson City where Julie is employed at Show-Me Curriculum Administrators Association and Eric is stationed at the Callaway Nuclear Plant with the Laborers Union Local 662.

Two-time Star Search Champion Returns to his Roots

ake Simpson’s music career has been full of highs and lows. Singing on stage at the Oprah show with Stevie Wonder — a definite highlight. Recording contracts that fell through for one reason or another — career low. But this fun-loving, positive-attitude, nothing-is-going-to-stop-me type of guy takes it all in stride. About two years ago, after many years spent living in Los Angeles, Simpson decided it was time to return to his hometown of Crocker, Mo. All “four” of his parents are older and he’s got a few projects he’d like to work on, like restoring his 1967 Camaro. But that doesn’t mean he has left the music scene. “I have the most boring life in the history of mankind … on purpose,” Simpson jokingly said. “It’s been cool to be with my family and do some shows. I get to play music with no pressure.” A far different scenario than back in 2003 when he won $100,000 and a recording contract with Sony after winning a Star Search competition. The following year, he returned for another season, taking home the title of grand champion, another $100,000 and a recording contract with A&M Records, further launching his career. Part of his winnings went to purchase a BMW and to make the move from New

York City to Los Angeles, where he stayed put for several years. The challenging life as a musician in LA came with many setbacks but there were those gigs and sold-out shows that made living and working on the West Coast a dream come true. Before his claim to fame, Simpson was well known in the Lake area, playing with musicians and in bands that helped him fine-tune his career. He’s back on stage with many of the same musicians that he’s known since the mid 90s. Simpson has always been a fan of “music for grown folk.” His grandmother encouraged him to sing in the church choir at the age of five and years of piano lessons followed. “I live in the R&B world,” Simpson said. There’s no place he’d rather be than on stage, playing music, making friends and vibin’. Bringing this “Yacht Rock” genre of music to the Lake, Simpson has created a new band called the Mai Tais, playing weekly at Fat Polly’s and every other week at Captain Ron’s through the summer. The band is made up of musicians like Jerry Frank, a well-seasoned tenor sax player who has many accolades of his own including playing for Ike & Tina Turner and touring with The Big Bopper. And fellow vocalist Penny Lower, who Simpson credits for teaching him how to

sing with soul. Other members of the Mai Tais are: Ryan Oldham, on guitar; Cory Fancher, playing the drums; and Mike Lower, on bass. They stick to classics from the 70s & 80s by artists such as Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Fleetwood Mac, Paul Davis — and one-hit-wonders you haven’t heard in a while but probably know every word to. “This is the last genre of music to me that I haven’t already done,” Simpson said. “(Today’s music) is so uninteresting to me. We come from a very old age of music. It’s a combined team effort on stage. We are musicians, we are artists. We feel the music and work off everyone’s energy.” When asked if he plans to go back to LA, Simpson says he is starting to miss it and has a job to go back to. On his bucket list is to record a big band album, like they did in the 60s, with no computers and all on tape but doing so at Capital Records comes at a price. He says it might take a few years to raise the $150,000 but it’s clear he has every intention of pulling it off. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

SOUNDS SUMMER

THE OF

Where to go for the best live music at the Lake

STORY BY CONNYE GRIFFIN

T

here’s a popular saying among musicians — “without music life would be a mistake.” That certainly seems to resonate at the Lake when the sound of live music carries across the water and lures people into waterfront restaurants. Summer just wouldn’t be the same without it. Local venues come alive, creating a fun atmosphere especially during the summer when bands travel from across the United States to come to a Lake venue to perform.

Sound Familiar? Cover bands are the foundational favorites at the Lake. Familiar tunes from days gone by and last week’s chart-toppers are “bread and butter” for performers heard at waterfronts, 76

along the Parkway, in landlocked hideaways, and wide, open spaces. One of the bigger covers is The i-Berrys. With nine members, the band fills a stage, but it’s the sound that has won acclaim. In September 2018, The i-Berrys headlined at the Ozarks Amphitheater, a 10,000-seat, award-winning venue. An i-Berrys’ playlist includes sweet trills from Celtic and Irish traditions, the electric thrill of pop funk, and sounds of country rock. What all three categories have in common is a fast pace and powerful beat — crowd pleasers at any time, for any age. What ignites a table, however, is a favorite song — one that catches ears, provokes people to look for a dance partner, and amps up the party. A great band or DJ knows this energy

and chooses tunes to span the ages, looking for smiles on faces. According to DJ Taz (the Drummer), the 1990s are great years to get people on their feet and dancing. He should know. He’s a DJ with regular bookings, and he plays with eight different bands, including the i-Berrys.

Original Lyrics & Tunes Many solo acts and smaller bands cover the decades, too, but some of them have CDs featuring their own original lyrics and tunes. One venue, The Fire Room at Pick’s Gallery in Osage Beach, specializes in singer-songwriters with local, national and international résumés using a “house” concert model. Acoustics in that fireplace display room thrill artists and small audiences alike. In October 2018, a Missouri native from Osceola, Jodee Lewis, returned as the headliner and shared her song titled “Missouri” from the Buzzard’s Bluff album. In 2019, Bob Walkenhorst of Kansas City, and fresh from a Norwegian tour, appeared with his daughter, Una, both reimagining Rainmakers’ tunes and alternating between original music written by each. On July 3, Jon Dee Graham will return. Other artists heard around the Lake perform both covers and original music. One is Wayne Faust who’s been featured at Shady Gators for the past 12 years. You can find him there five days a week for two weeks each summer month. Since NautiFish joined the Lake’s waterfronts, Faust has added a sixth day performing.

Fans follow him and often request two favorites: “My Father’s Not the President,” a poem set to music—known for bringing a tear to many an eye, and “Bald Guys are Cool,” known for its power to bring laughs at the expense of anyone without a hat or hair to protect his pate from the sun. Another old-hand, Al Holly, when asked to season his cover playlist with a few of his originals, showed a similar range and surprised two tables of people who were at Shawnee Bluff Winery just to hear him play. Their applause and attention were a bit stronger as he sang a prayer titled “Light of Your Love,” cowritten with Dick Wagner. Their grins grew wide as he lamented leaving his gal “1/ 5th at a Time,” a lively country-styled tune co-written with Brent Briscoe. Those tables of fans were on their way to another venue at the Lake where Al’s brother, Norman, was performing later. One band hosting a jam session at Marty Byrde’s on Sunday afternoons is Whiskey Trio, featuring Josh Weitkamp, formerly of a larger version of Spontaneous Serendipity. Whiskey Trio will bring out a CD of its own covers in the fall. Playing fiddle one Sunday Jam was Mike Clayton, also known to play alongside Taz the Drummer with the Grayson Wood band at J. Wayne’s on the Strip. As Weitkamp said, a musician is “never in [his] last band.” They play in many, primarily for the love of the music.

Unique and Exclusive The largest venue, Ozarks Amphitheater in Camdenton, brings big crowds to an open-air venue where music reaches as high as the stars overhead. Nelly, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Five Finger Death Punch and Wiz Khalifa take the stage this summer. Shawnee Bluff’s Vineyard may seat fewer than the Amp, but its line-up is just as powerful. Favoring country sounds, they kicked off the 2019 season on Memorial Day with The Marshall Tucker Band. Sara Evans headlines for the Fourth of July weekend, and 38 Special will close this year’s concerts. Main Street Music Hall is another venue serving memories and music. One of its frequent concerts is a tribute band celebrating the early Beatles.

DJs and Karaoke Most waterfront and landlocked venues add live entertainment for customers on weekends. Some book musicians for afternoon sessions, but when a band is not in the house, a DJ will bring music to life and audiences to their feet. Well-known and working steadily are DJs Taz and Kyle. Like cover bands, they play a wide range of genres, and often tailor their playlists according to personal requests. As a DJ, Taz is known for taking “all requests all the time” while Kyle often facilitates a popular, musical sport: karaoke, including annual contests such as “Sing Your Heart Out” at Captain Ron’s. NOT YOUR GRANDMA’S

BINGO Nothing to lose at xTreme Bar Bingo STORY BY CONNYE GRIFFIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY AL GRIFFIN

H

ow might an owner pack the house every Thursday night, off-season and on, rain or shine? How could that owner keep people coming back for a good time week after week? xTreme Bar Bingo, of course! Marty Byrde’s Bar and Grill on the Bagnell Dam Strip recruited Pat Collins and Kathleen Marco to run weekly games of xTreme Bar Bingo. It is, as Collins says, “not your grandma’s bingo.” Tables seating two to eight in the bar and dining area quickly fill. Arriving well ahead of 7 p.m. is essential. Even on a night in May when graduation ceremonies were taking place and bike night was center-stage along the Strip, there were very few seats remaining.

82

LAKE LIFESTYLES // JULY/AUGUST 2019

Inspiration for Bar Bingo is Kathleen Marco and Pat Collins. They’ll entertain you as they call out numbers giving participants the chance to win big prizes.

Collins says Marty Bryde’s is her “happy place,” and she shares that joy with long-time friend and outstanding musician, Kathleen Marco. Both women utilize their meet-and-greet talents weekly with strangers who quickly become friends. Collins calls many of them by name as they find tables, and throughout the night as they stand, only one number away from claiming a prize. All cheer and applaud when one of them gets that lucky matching number and cries, “Bingo!” At the end of the evening, winners join arms with Pat and Kathleen to sing, “We Are the Champions!” by Queen. By day, Pat Collins makes toes pretty at Bella Donna Salon in The Landing on Osage Beach Parkway. She counts down the days until Thursday when she can call numbers and gin up fun for bingo players at Marty Byrde’s. Kathleen Marco also has a day job — or rather, many. She’s a classical pianist and vocalist, and a choir director at the Harper Chapel and Lake Ozark Christian churches. She has a private music studio with 35 piano and 65 vocal students. She performs at Shawnee Bluff, the Osage Beach Senior Center, Elks lodges, and at private events. She’s one busy woman who knows what makes people get on their feet to dance and which tunes will make people sing along. She keeps Marty Byrde’s rocking on Thursdays. xTreme Bar Bingo is a nine-game series with two intermissions, giving fans of Marty Byrde’s plenty of time to re-up and order off the menu in between games. Every bingo game card is free, yet each one

tempts with great, big prizes. In recent weeks, several people have won 50-inch TVs. One night a man claimed an Amazon Fire Stick. Most grand prizes require a player to win in a specified number of digital “balls,” but if no one shouts “Bingo” after 5-9 balls have been drawn electrically, the game continues until someone wins. Then the prize may be a T-shirt, a water bottle, or a $10 gift certificate to Marty Byrde’s or Michael’s Steak Chalet — less valuable than a $200 TV or the grand-prize pot that can reach into thousands of dollars — but winners still claim bragging rights and have something to show for it. The first three games also end in a drawing of all bingo cards with players’ names voluntarily written on the back. The lucky name matching that handwritten one wins something, and in the interest of full disclosure, this writer was asked to draw the card, turned her head away, reached to the bottom of the bucket, and withdrew one card folded in quarters, name invisible. As luck would have it, this writer drew her own name and carried home a Chop Champ. So even if the numbers don’t match the cards given, players can still be winners. That’s a great deal! And to think, a chance to win costs nothing. While Hollywood portraits of bingo parlors conjure images of smoke-filled rooms, seniors pushing walkers, and small groups ignoring other small groups, xTreme Bar Bingo taking place at Marty Byrde’s every Thursday at 7 p.m. is nothing like that. It is alive with fun, laughter, and good feelings. Collins recommends getting there early to get a seat. She’s right! Go early and play for free. You’ll leave with a prize — if only a memory of great times.

The Comforts of Home You’ll feel like family at MaMa CiTa’s STORY BY CHARIS PATIRES + PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALAN WOHLGEMUT

What do you get when you blend generations of heritage, authentic cuisine and a treat-you-like-family atmosphere? Not only some of the best homemade Mexican dishes around but an actual experience as you dine. Servers greet you dressed in moños, colorful decorations come straight from Mexico City, guacamole is made table-side, and margarita towers are meant to be shared with the whole table. The service and traditional flavors at MaMa CiTa’s, the newest Mexican restaurant in Osage Beach, ensure you will not only experience a taste of Mexico but will get a taste for their culture where an emphasis is placed on family.

84

LAKE LIFESTYLES // JULY/AUGUST 2019

A variety of fajitas, including these steak fajitas, are on the menu.

MaMa CiTa’s Quesadilla is made with grilled chicken or steak packed with black beans and topped with creamy queso sauce.

Angie Diaz and Melissa Chevez Galloway decided to team up and open the restaurant after hosting many family-style dinners of their own. Always gathering at their homes, the two have known each other for years. Both grew up where amazing food was served all of the time, around a table where a crowd always gathered. Angie was raised in Mexico City before moving to the Lake area, while Melissa and her family hail from Southern California. They both recall fond memories of large family gatherings that were always held surrounded by generous helpings of food. Using their expertise and long history in mastering Mexican cuisine, everyone brings something to the table at MaMa CiTa’s, Melissa said. Recipes from generations of Mexican cooks bring the flavors they learned to the Lake. Many of Angie’s own family members area a part of the team, including her Dad, Jorge, who is the general manager.

What makes MaMa CiTa’s different The Lake has it’s fair share of Mexican restaurants, but what’s different about MaMa CiTa’s is the amount of homemade food and authentic recipes that are available. Chips are made fresh, the refried beans are homemade, and so is the enchilada sauce and corn tortillas …. it’s hard to find something that hasn’t been diced, sliced and chopped fresh each day. And then there are the choices. White Mexican rice is made with carrots and peas but there is also the CiTa rice, a red Mexican rice with a bit more flavor than most. Black and refried beans are an option, as is a lettuce wrap instead of a taco shell.

What’s on the menu Some of the more popular choices among diners includes the beer battered fish tacos (made with Haddock), the different flavors of tamales, street corn, shrimp enchiladas and the ceviche. The full menu has appetizers, nachos, street tacos, tamales, ensaladas, house specialties, fajitas, vegetarian options and a kids’ menu. There are 10 beers on tap, some American and others Mexican. The full menu of cocktails include many even the most seasoned connoisseur probably has never heard of like the Milagro Freshest Margarita made with tequila, triple sec, fresh lime juice, agave nectar and a splash of orange juice. But there are many others to discover.

Freshly-made tortilla chips layered with black beans, cheese sauce, jalapeños, pico de gallo, sour cream and shredded chicken.

Warm churros and ice cream are the perfect match. These churros are rolled in cinnamon and sugar, injected with a cajeta (caramel sauce), topped with ice cream, chocolate sauce and whip cream.

Olé! Take a look around. You’ll find Mexican flare everywhere. Colorful flags, Mexican blankets draped over furniture, colorful chandeliers and hand-painted murals by a local artist are on full display. It’s all about family here where servers get into the music by singing a few notes as they pass by, engage you in conversation and do their best to entertain and bring a smile to your face. Local artist Elissa Levy used her talent to dress up the walls with colorful scenes of quaint Mexican towns.

RISING FROM THE

Lake House 13 rebuilt in 63 days after fire STORY BY CONNYE GRIFFIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY AL GRIFFIN

90

LAKE LIFESTYLES // JULY/AUGUST 2019

D

ustin Racen had a dream that he brought to life with a little help from friends. He restored an old building in Chimney Cove at the Lake’s 13-mile marker and christened it Lake House 13. Business was good. People came to eat and drink, listen to live music on Friday and Saturday nights, and play Giant Jenga or Four Square. In February 2018, Racen’s dream went up in smoke. The restaurant burned to its cement footprint. Those first-generation arcade games and vintage neon that added so much character to the restaurant’s interior? Ashes. Those skis donated and autographed? Destroyed. From kitchen to tiki bar — gone. Only

the panels painted by Thomas Richmond, an artist known as Sabertooth, stood, and they still stand today, a reminder of Racen’s dream: to create a place for gathering, a cozy place, just like hunting cabins in the woods. One of those panels in Autumn colors with pine trees standing tall still bears the black smoke residue from the fire that took Racen’s restaurant to the ground. Nevertheless, and again with a lot of help from friends and neighbors, Lake House 13 opened a short 63 days later. It looks and feels very much like that original cozy lodge, but it’s quite new. Tables and chairs? New. Floor, walls, windows and roof? New. Indeed, little appears to have changed except the tiki bar which has been replaced with a larger rectangular bar inside and out. A door connects the two so that bartenders can easily step from one to the other as needed. More stools around the bar and a streamlined organization overseen by Ron Westgate, bartender from the beginning of the Lake House 13 dream, mean more people can be served efficiently. The kitchen is larger, too. Making sure the delicious foods are presented well is Kyle Putney, a local resident who learned the art and craft of food and food management in kitchens at Lake of the Ozarks. He collaborates with Racen to fine-tune the menu and flavors. Lake House 13 takes pride in its meat. Everything is smoked in-house. A tender brisket may be the heart of a BBQ Brisket Swiss Burger or three soft-shell tacos for Taco Thursdays. A margarita that actually tastes of tequila pairs well with either one. Pizza is another star at Lake House 13. Putney and Racen experimented with a daily, freshly-made crust until they perfected it. A brick pizza oven renders the dough firm on bottom, golden at the edge, and sturdy enough to support a manly pizza known as the Carnivore. A five-meat pizza, the Carnivore is abundant in pepperoni, ham, bacon, sausage and ground beef. It’s a force to be reckoned with, especially when paired with one of Lake House 13’s beers, including Budweiser

products, of course, Pacifico, and Kansas City’s Boulevard Wheat, Pale Ale, and Single-Wide IPA. A lighter drink now proffered at Lake House 13 is Buzz Water, aptly named because it has a 5% Alcohol by Volume rating plus electrolytes, and is gluten-free. With wine providing the spirit, it’s bottled in raspberry, watermelon, and cucumber flavors. It was a refreshing hit for Harbor Hop patrons. Still, some customers want a mighty kick in the cocktails, and Lake House 13 has a drink for that, too. It’s called Sleeping with the Fishes because the five different liquors used to make it could put someone underwater if not consumed responsibly. It’s made with Blood Orange Sour, Sprite, vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and Triple Sec. A couple of Swedish Fish float through the drink, adding a fun element to a drink doing serious business. Another favorite menu item is the Catfish Po’Boy, made with catfish that tastes like the fish Grandpa pulled from the Lake years ago. The flavor of Lake House’s Po’Boy fish is true! It’s better than the average farm-raised fish that may or may not have taste beyond the crisp fried breading. Served with a side of Twice-baked Potato Salad topped with the restaurant’s candied bacon, the Po’Boy meal is a delight. Racen has brought Lake House 13 to life twice now, and it’s going strong for 2019. The flavors are great, and the ambiance is first-rate. Variety in both food and drink should please every palate and every age. Children love chicken tenders and corn dogs — two menu items just for them. A variety in music also pleases different ages. Lake House 13 has featured Reggae one weekend and KC Group Therapy on another. Both genres bring music that gets people dancing, and the restaurant has space for that, too. Happy Hours Monday through Friday provide deals on drink and food. So does Taco Thursday. Above all, Lake House 13 is a place where people gather. In fact, Lake House 13 is a community of people serving good food and good times.

Nearly everything was destroyed in a fire at Lake House 13 in February 2018. But panels painted by a local artist still stand, although there is smoke damage in one area that can be seen. LAKENEWSONLINE.COM

Rebuilding the Dream A large Caribou was a conversationstarter in the first Lake House 13. That animal, so long preserved, became ash after the fire. Racen’s neighbors in Chimney Cove searched online for a replacement and found one in Iowa. They drove the distance to buy it and deliver it to him. He installed it in a place of honor. It now wears a brimmed hat and reminds Racen of what was. More important, it reminds him of what is: a community of support without which he could not have opened in 63 days. People showed up and picked up paint brushes. They did what they could to bring the dream back to life. Other neighbors donated and autographed paddles and skis as good luck tokens and décor. In fact, framed prints, Lake maps, and memorabilia looking old and weathered are gifts from those who wanted to see Lake House 13 thrive again. Just a few items could be salvaged. Metal signs for the Royals and Cardinals are two that were dug out of ash, cleaned, and restored. They hang beside donated things, given by good people residing here at Lake of the Ozarks.

LAKE LIFESTYLES // JULY/AUGUST 2019

The restaurant business is a community of its own at Lake of the Ozarks. Branding Iron’s owners, Kelly and Laurie Preator, are now enduring what Racen has overcome. The Preator’s restaurant burned down earlier this year, but before it did, Racen could count on them for supplies in an emergency. Lake House returned the favor, of course. One recent Fourth of July evening — a busy, busy time for restaurants at the Lake — the Preators closed The Branding Iron and treated all their employees to a night at Lake House 13 to show their appreciation to the Iron’s staff — the ones who made their restaurant thrive. That’s the kind of people the Preators are, says Racen and Westgate. That’s the kind of people behind Lake House 13, too.

Still, it must be granted, Lake House 13 has a sense of humor, one admired by Joe and Christy Jung, owners of Jolly Roger’s who also faced a loss by fire and had to rebuild in 2008. As the legend goes, the Jungs make a game of pilfering some item from other Lake restaurants. Apparently, they are so practiced at this prank the staff doesn’t notice — at least that was Lake House 13’s experience. They just didn’t see their four-foot Sasquatch disappear. Of course, a missing Sasquatch requires a hunt or at least a tradeoff so Lake House took off with the Jolly Roger’s’ pirate. For months, he sat atop a partial wall for all to see and directly across from the Sasquatch who was returned New Year’s Eve 2018. At some point, Lake House will return the pirate but good fun and good feelings between restaurant owners will surely continue.

LEFT: This Caribou replaces one that was lost during the fire. Supporters of the restaurant found a lookalike online, purchased it, drove to Iowa to pick it up and delivered it back to the Lake.

How a Devastating Loss Changes a Man Racen has always been a hands-on boss. He builds, cooks, serves, cleans, and pours when necessary. He did the same after Lake House 13 burned so anyone might ask: what’s different now? He’s more responsible, he says, but he attributes most of that to his own family expanding. He’s now the father to Miller Marie, 8 months old in July. DJ Shannon, Miller’s mother, is the karaoke master on Sunday afternoons and just as hard-working. She pitches in wherever and whenever she’s needed. Together, Racen and Shannon are building at and for Lake of the Ozarks. They’re putting down deep roots in addition to the restaurant. They just bought a house on Shawnee Bend and plan to stay. This is their home, one that began with an old building in need of repair and Racen’s dream. RIGHT: It’s Taco Thursday at Lake House 13.

ABOUT LAKE HOUSE 13 • 98 Oasis Circle, Sunrise Beach • Chimney Cove, 13-mile marker • Open Daily at 11 a.m. Closes Monday-Saturday at 1:30 a.m. Closes Sunday at midnight.

WISHING ON A RIDE G etting to sit in the passenger seat of a powerboat is something most people don’t get to experience, but 10-year old Gram Edwards is one of the lucky few. For several years Gram has been able to attend the Wishing on a Ride event held during the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in August where participants get to ride in one of the race boats. Over the years, Shootout’s Wishing on a Ride event has given nearly 1,000 boat rides to children and their families who are dealing with a serious medical condition or disability. It gives the family a day of fun and forgetting — forgetting about their doctor’s appointments and treatments. In 2014, at the age of 5, Gram was diagnosed with T-Cell Leukemia. More

than three years of treatment followed that included lumbar punctures and radiation. In 2017 he finished his last dose of chemotherapy, rang the bell, then was taken out for a celebratory dinner. That evening the doctor called with bad news. His tests came back positive for Leukemia. A more aggressive treatment immediately started and included a bone marrow transplant (thanks to his older brother who was a match). Gram’s mom Donielle said it was a

THE BOATING EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME

BY CHARIS PATIRES

trying time for the family who lives about an hour-and-a-half from St. Louis where he was receiving treatment but there were some happy times. During his initial diagnosis their local Make-A-Wish chapter granted Gram a wish and the whole family went to LEGOLAND and Sea World in California. Shortly after the family was invited to visit Lake of the Ozarks to take part in Wishing on a Ride.

They’ve been back a few times. “It lets families remember they can still be a family,” Donielle said. “It’s more than just a ride. It is the relationship we have with everyone who puts the event on. It is an amazing experience.” Today Gram is a “perfectly healthy boy,” but will continue to have regular checkups. In the back of their mind the family knows that there is a high risk of secondary cancers and failure of major organs. Despite all of it, they stay positive and enjoy any time they get to spend together. “It does help you forget everything you are going through because it is constant. It is always in the back of your mind,” Donielle says. “But it’s not what you are going through that defines you. It’s nice to get away and have those

experiences. We are very lucky.” For families who travel from other states or even several hours away (like the Edwards’), overnight accommodations are made and they are hooked up with an official “family greeter” to make their experience more enjoyable. Local businesses also supply gift cards to help families keep expenses down. “We have an incredible team of volunteers who handle lots of moving parts,” event organizer Tiffany Maasen said. These volunteer hours earn donation dollars from Shootout which goes to Make-A-Wish Missouri. Over the last two years, the local area has granted eight wishes through

Make-A-Wish Missouri. The live auction last year raised $40,000 which can pay for granting 4-6 wishes. “For me personally, it is the greatest day of the year,” Maasen said. “To see the kids enjoying what we tend to take for granted is amazing. I love pairing up the kids with the boat drivers and watch the magic unfold as the drivers bond with the families. It’s a day the entire family can have the boating experience of a lifetime. Sometimes the siblings have a tough time when a brother or sister is sick. This gives all of them a great day together on the beautiful Lake.”
