REGISTRATION REGISTRATION PROCEDURES

CANCELLATION & CREDIT / REFUND POLICY

There are three easy ways you can sign up for Y classes:

The Y is unable to do make-ups or issue refunds or credits for classes due to illness, scheduling conflicts or other personal reasons. If you decide not to participate in a class during the first half of the session, a $50 fee will be charged and the remainder of the class fee will be refunded in the form of a credit voucher good toward another YMCA program. NO refunds or credits will be issued once 50 percent of the program session has been completed.

• In person: Visit the Welcome Center to pick up a registration form and fill it out for immediate processing. • By phone: Call us at 847.367.6797 after 7:30 a.m. with your credit card information and we can take care of registration while you are on the line with us. • By e-mail: Available only to current members who draft monthly using a credit/debit card — please do not e-mail credit card information. Fill out the registration form on our website, www.ymcalakecounty.org and e-mail it to registration@ymcalakecounty.org.

REGISTRATION FEES Wondering why there are two fees listed under many of our programs? The first fee is the member rate and the second is for community members.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION Most adult and youth programs are held on a session basis and have a start and end date. Participants must pre-register for these programs before attending class, including fitness classes included with membership. For further information about session registration dates, call or visit our Welcome Center desk or go to our website, www.ymcalakecounty.org. Registration is open first to Central Lake YMCA members, followed by open registration for community members and members of other YMCAs. Registration forms are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Incomplete registration forms or those without a signed waiver will not be processed. Payment is expected at the time of registration and can be paid by cash, check or credit card (please note that the Lake County Family YMCA does not accept American Express).

GUEST PASS POLICY Central Lake YMCA members are welcome to bring guests at any time. Each membership has three free guest passes per year, and additional guests may come for a fee of $10 per adult or $5 per child. All guests must be accompanied by a current member and present a picture ID.

GOOD VALUES! When you join the Central Lake YMCA you automatically receive privileges at more than 2,000 YMCAs across the country, including our Northern Lake YMCA in Waukegan. When you register for a program at the Central Lake YMCA, not only do you get a good value, but you get good values. That’s because all YMCA programs are developed to express, demonstrate and encourage the four core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

HELP US RUN GREAT PROGRAMS Great classes have been canceled because of late registration. If enrollment is not at our established minimum number one week before the first day of class, we will need to cancel the class. Therefore, PLEASE register early for your classes.

Classes must achieve minimum enrollment standards to continue and will be closed when they reach maximum capacity.

LATE REGISTRATION Swim lesson prices increase by $25 on the first day of late registration.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CHILDCARE

CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER

WHAT MAKES US SPECIAL

At the Central Lake YMCA Child Development Center your children will learn how to participate in active learning in the world around them. We carefully design each activity to expand your child’s imagination and encourage lifelong positive values. Full- and part-week classes are available for children 6 weeks through 5 years of age. This program provides your children with high-quality, fun experiences that will inspire each child to grow to his or her fullest potential.

Once your family joins our program, you become part of our family, returning year after year and referring friends to the program. Family events take place frequently to bond our families and teachers together. Parents are always invited to share in their children’s experiences whether it’s feeding their infant, reading to their toddler or chaperoning a field trip with their preschooler. The strength of our school comes from our dedicated and caring staff. Our teachers are trained professionals selected for their expertise in early childhood education. They provide a warm, caring and responsive relationship with each child as developmental skills are achieved.

Each of our five classrooms displays a warm and brightly colored environment with lofts and child-sized furniture. Our outdoor area includes two playgrounds, a walking path around the facility and nearby parks for the children to enjoy. Age-appropriate field trips are offered for children ages 3 – 5 as well as access to our zero-depth indoor pool. For further information, call Ruth Reichenbach or Melinda Agosto at 847.367.6797.

COLOR THEORY (AGES 14+) Whether you’re working in watercolor paints, acrylics, colored pencils or even pastels, learning how to mix colors and pigments is a must. So why do you get a different color than the person next to you if you are using the same colors? Why do you keep getting the wrong color altogether or even end up making “mud”? We will explore all the variables of color mixing, the general theory behind color and how it applies to modern-day pigments. We also will discuss how to determine the best paints/pencils to use. Students must bring their own supplies, including any paints/pencils/ pastels and paper and should be ready to experiment. This class is held in the VHHS Auditorium.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SWIM LESSONS

SESSION DATES June 3 – 30 July 8 – Aug. 4 No classes week of July 2

WHAT MAKES OUR PROGRAMS DIFFERENT?

SWIM LESSONS

The goal of the YMCA swim lesson program is to develop the whole person — spiritually, mentally and physically. Our teaching methods focus primarily on student-centered learning, increasing awareness of safety in all aspects and assisting participants in perfecting skills to the best of their ability. The goal is to create a life-long interest in aquatic activities and promote a healthy lifestyle. All instructors are lifeguard certified.

During each session, your child will learn both structured swim instruction and water-safety skills. If your child is ever the only participant to show up for his or her group lesson, the class will run for 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes.

Here are five components of the YMCA Swim Lesson Program: • Personal Safety: includes rules and safety tips, floating, treading, use of personal flotation devices, boating safety, and health and safety. • Personal Growth: includes character development and personal growth opportunities. • Stroke Development: includes water orientation and adjustment skills (parent/child) and major swimming strokes. • Water Sports and Games: includes water polo/wetball and competitive swimming. • Recognizing Emergencies: getting help, non-swimming rescues and first aid.

The participant must be able to perform the skills required in the enrolled level. Instructors reserve the right to switch any participant they feel is not in the appropriate swim level. We ask that parents view swim lessons from the pool-viewing room. This allows your child to benefit the most by giving his or her full attention to the swim instructor. We also ask that parents do not leave the premises when your child is in his or her swim lesson. During swim lessons the pool is closed to swimmers other than the one lap lane we leave open for our members who wish to swim laps. Communication is key to a successful program so we ask that if you have any questions about the participant’s lessons, please contact your instructor or the aquatics department. For further information on where your child should be placed, please contact the Aquatics Director at 847.367.6797.

Weekday classes are two times a week for four weeks for a total of eight lessons. Saturday classes run for eight weeks. Lesson times are subject to change by 15 minutes. A late fee of $25 will be charged beginning Tuesday, May 29.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SWIM LESSONS

PRESCHOOL AQUATICS (6 MONTHS – 5 YEARS) In the preschool aquatics program, children develop fundamental swimming skills along with water and boat safety awareness. These skills can be used in water recreational activities that they will enjoy when they are older and help to form a foundation for swimming as a lifelong physical fitness activity.

SHRIMP / KIPPER (6 – 24 MONTHS)

STARFISH A (AGES 3 – 5)

Children must be able to support the weight of their own head to begin this class. In this parent/tot class, the child will learn techniques of proper entry/exit from water, beginning floating/stroke development, and safety in and around the pool while having fun.

Swimmers in this level will begin refining freestyle techniques and gaining confidence in their backstroke and elementary backstroke techniques. In addition to swimming without flotation devices, swimmers begin learning breaststroke basics and swimming in the lap lanes of the pool.

INIA / PERCH (24 – 36 MONTHS)

STARFISH B (AGES 3 – 5)

This class is for older toddlers to attend with a parent or caregiver. Beginner swim techniques are explored along with proper entry/exit from water, safety in and around the pool, beginner independence, and having fun in the pool.

The last class of our preschool aquatics program offers the opportunity to build swimmers’ endurance. Children will advance to swimming full lengths of freestyle, backstroke and elementary backstroke with proper techniques. Swimmers also will gain confidence swimming breaststroke and spending time in deep water.

PRE-PIKE (AGES 2 ½ – 3) Children must be ready for independent swimming to join this class. Water exploration is the primary focus for new swimmers or first-time independent swimmers. Classes will include proper entry/exit from water, safety in and around the pool, fun and games, and basic water skills.

PIKE (AGES 3 – 5) A child under age 5 who has never taken swimming lessons should begin as a Pike. This is the beginning level to help develop group adjustment, independent stroke development and advancing water skills. Classes will include working on floating, submerging, beginning simultaneous and alternating arm/leg actions, pool safety, and water entry and exit. Flotation devices will be used.

EEL (AGES 3 – 5) The next step in independent swimming is Eel, which allows children to use flotation devices to gain confidence swimming alone. Typical classes include working on simultaneous and alternating arm action and kicking, breathing techniques, and building endurance.

RAY (AGES 3 – 5) This class is the first opportunity children have to increase endurance without the use of flotation devices. By the end of this level, swimmers are able to cross the shallow end, head in the water, with freestyle-type arm action and kicking. Swimmers also will learn the techniques of backstroke and elementary backstroke.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SWIM LESSONS

YOUTH AQUATICS (AGES 6 – 14) The Central Lake YMCA offers seven progressive levels for children to learn, grow and thrive in the water. These levels include: Polliwog A, Polliwog B, Guppy A, Guppy B, Minnow, Fish/Flying Fish and Shark.

POLLIWOG A

FISH / FLYING FISH

This is the beginner-level class for those ages 6+ who have never had prior swim lessons. Children are taught core swimming skills as they focus on safety and confidence in the water, developing basic stroke techniques and swimming independently. Flotation devices may be used.

This is one of the final levels of the progression program. Swimmers looking to advance their technical training over endurance training may choose this level instead of the swim team. Swimmers’ knowledge of the strokes should be advanced so extreme fine tuning, efficiency and endurance training can be the focus. After passing Fish/Flying Fish, swimmers can choose to continue with the Junior Turtles Swim Team, Bronze 2, if they are looking for competitive experience.

POLLIWOG B This is the advanced beginners’ class and is for children who have participated in preschool swim lessons or are already comfortable submerging their face and swimming. Swimmers will begin floating on their backs, leading to developing back crawl and elementary backstroke skills. We also will work on rhythmic breathing and underwater exploration to develop breath control. Participants will build endurance to swim 10 yards without a flotation device.

SHARK The final level of the progressive program may be the right fit for your swimmers if they do well in a small class setting. Swimmers will increase endurance and continued extreme fine tuning of all stroke techniques. Swimmers also will learn new competitive concepts and begin using a clock to pace their swimming. After passing Shark, swimmers can choose to continue with the Turtles Swim Team.

GUPPY A This class is the first step toward growing longer swimming endurance. In addition to refining stroke techniques for front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke, swimmers will learn rhythmic breathing and how to swim 25 yards (one pool length) without a flotation device.

GUPPY B Advanced intermediate swimmers will gain stronger stroke techniques and endurance in this class. Swimmers will be introduced to gliding, streamlining and breaststroke and will begin learning flip turns. This class will further refine skills taught in Guppy A for increased endurance for an increased endurance of 50 yards (two pool lengths) or more.

MINNOW This level is typically when students begin speeding up their strokes. This is done through high refinement of their techniques and longer endurance training. In addition to fine tuning breaststroke and flip turns, swimmers begin dolphin kick and butterfly. For swimmers to advance into Minnow they must be able to swim 50 yards (two pool lengths) of freestyle with rotary breathing and backstroke and have a general understanding of breaststroke timing. After passing Minnow, swimmers can choose to continue with the Junior Turtles Swim Team, Bronze 1, if they are looking for competitive experience.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SUMMER DAY CAMP (K – 8 GRADE)

From swimming to craft projects and outdoor education, Y summer day camps offer campers a day full of typical camping activities that include songs, games, and plenty of outdoor fun and adventure. Campers have the chance to build self-confidence, discover new skills, develop a respect for the outdoors and make new friends. Our summer day camps are American Camp Association accredited, which means we maintain the highest standards of program quality. All counselors are certified in first aid, CPR and AED. We offer three summer camp experiences. The younger groups will have fun in a safe environment in which they are active, learning, laughing and made to feel special. The focus for the older group is community awareness and career exploration through service projects, leadership initiatives and social development. Space is limited, so we encourage you to register your children early. Members of the Y receive discounted rates. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only happen when we work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why, at the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, the Lake County Family YMCA works side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. We want all residents of Lake County to have access to our programs and facilities regardless of their ability to pay. To accomplish that we need the support of our members and our community. Together, we can provide life-changing experiences and unprecedented opportunities for children, teens and their families.
