REGISTRATION REGISTRATION PROCEDURES

LATE REGISTRATION

There are three easy ways you can sign up for Y classes:

Swim lesson prices increase by $25 beginning on the first day of late registration.

• In person: Visit the Welcome Center to pick up a registration form and fill it out for immediate processing. • By phone: Call us at 847.367.6797 after 7:30 a.m. with your credit card information and we can take care of registration while you are on the line with us. • By e-mail: Available only to current members who draft monthly using a credit/debit card―please do not e-mail credit card information. Fill out the online registration form available on our website, www.ymcalakecounty.org, and e-mail it to registration@ymcalakecounty.org.

REGISTRATION FEES Wondering why there are two fees listed under many of our programs? The first fee is the member rate and the second is for visitors.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION Registration is open first to Central Lake YMCA members, followed by open registration for community members and members of other YMCAs. Registration forms are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Classes must achieve minimum enrollment standards to continue and will be closed when they reach maximum capacity.

GOOD VALUES! When you register for a program at the Central Lake YMCA, not only do you get a good value, but you get good values. That’s because all YMCA programs are developed to express, demonstrate and encourage the four core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

HELP US RUN GREAT PROGRAMS Great classes have been canceled because of late registration. If enrollment is not at our established minimum number one week before the first day of class, we will need to cancel the class. So PLEASE register early for your class.

4

CANCELLATION & CREDIT/REFUND POLICY The Y is unable to do make-ups or issue refunds or credits for classes due to illness, scheduling conflicts or other personal reasons. If you decide not to participate in a class during the first half of the session, a $50 fee will be charged and the remainder of the class fee will be refunded in the form of a credit voucher good toward another YMCA program. NO refunds or credits will be issued once 50 percent of the program session has been completed.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CHILDCARE CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER At the Central Lake YMCA Child Development Center your children will learn how to participate in active learning in the world around them. We carefully design every activity to expand your child’s imagination and encourage lifelong positive values. Full and part-week classes are available for 6 weeks through 5 years of age. This program provides your children with high-quality, fun experiences that will inspire each child to grow to his or her fullest potential. Each of our five classrooms displays a warm and brightly colored environment with lofts and child-sized furniture. Our outdoor area includes two playgrounds, a walking path around the facility and nearby parks for the children to enjoy. Age-appropriate field trips are offered for children 3 to 5 as well as access to our zero-depth indoor pool. For further information please call Ruth Reichenbach at ext. 231 or Melinda Agosto at ext. 233

WHAT MAKES US SPECIAL Once your family joins our program you become part of our family, returning year after year and referring friends to the program. Family events take place frequently to bond our families and teachers together. Parents are always invited to share in their children’s experiences whether it’s feeding their infant, reading to their toddler or chaperoning a field trip with their preschooler. The strength of our school comes from our dedicated and caring staff. Our teachers are trained professionals selected for their expertise in early childhood education. They provide a warm, caring and responsive relationship with each child as developmental skills are achieved. Child Development Center

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SWIM LESSONS WHAT MAKES OUR PROGRAMS DIFFERENT?

SWIM LESSONS

The goal of the YMCA swim lesson program is to develop the whole person — spiritually, mentally and physically. Our teaching methods focus primarily on student-centered learning, increasing awareness of safety in all aspects and assisting participants in perfecting skills to the best of their ability. The goal is to create a life-long interest in aquatic activities and promote a healthy lifestyle. All instructors are lifeguard certified. Here are five components to the YMCA Swim Lesson Program: • Personal Safety: includes rules and safety tips, floating, treading, use of personal floatation devices (PFDs), boating safety, and health and safety. • Personal Growth: includes character development and personal growth opportunities. • Stroke Development: includes water orientation and adjustment skills (Parent/Child) and major swimming strokes. • Water Sports and Games: includes water polo/wetball and competitive swimming. • Recognizing Emergencies: getting help, non-swimming rescues and first aid.

During each session your child will learn both structured swim instruction and water-safety skills. If your child is ever the only participant to show up for his or her group lesson, the class will run for 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes. The participant must be able to perform the skills required in the enrolled level. Instructors reserve the right to switch any participant they feel is not in the appropriate swim level. We ask that parents view swim lessons from the pool-viewing room. This allows your child to benefit the most by giving his or her full attention to the swim instructor. We also ask that parents do not leave the premises when your child is in their swim lesson. During swim lessons the pool is closed to swimmers other then the one lap lane we leave open for our members who wish to swim laps. Communication is key to a successful program so we ask that if you have any questions about the participant’s lessons, please contact your instructor or the aquatics department. For further information on where your child should be placed, please contact the aquatics director at Ext. 235.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT YOUTH SWIM LESSONS EEL (3-5 YEARS) The next step in independent swimming is Eel which allows children to use floatation devices to gain confidence swimming alone. Typical classes include working on simultaneous and alternating arm action and kicking, breathing techniques, and building endurance.

RAY (3-5 YEARS) This class is the first opportunity children have to increase endurance without use of floatation devices. By the end of this level, swimmers are able to cross the shallow end, head in the water, with freestyle type arm action and kicking. Swimmers also will learn the techniques of backstroke and elementary backstroke.

STARFISH A (3-5 YEARS) Children will begin refining front crawl and will be introduced to backstroke and elementary backstroke. In addition to swimming without a floatation device, swimmers begin learning breaststroke basics and swimming in the lap lanes.

The Lake County Family YMCA is a cause-driven nonprofit organization that strengthens the community through programs and services that foster youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. We were founded in 1892 and are one of the largest community service organizations in Lake County. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only happen when we work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why, at the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, the Lake County Family YMCA works side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. We want all residents of Lake County to have access to our programs and facilities regardless of their ability to pay. To accomplish that we need the support of our members. Together, we can provide lifechanging experiences and unprecedented opportunities for children, teens and their families.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Y STORIES SWIMMING FOR LIFE You could say Kelly Smith wanted what many moms want for their child: that he learn how to swim. Joel had a stroke shortly after he was born, resulting in weakness on the right side of his body, especially his arm. Kelly was determined to keep Joel active. “I saw something about special-needs programming on the local cable channel about four years ago and have been coming to the Y ever since,” she said. “The program has been excellent.” Now 7, Joel has been doing enrichment classes at the Y. These classes also have helped him advance, Kelly said. “He loves coming to the Y, and it’s really convenient for us since we live nearby.”

Consistency for children with special needs is really important. We’ve been with Tim now quite some time and have been very lucky.” At a school meeting for first grade, the social worker asked Kelly about Joel’s swimming. “I told her,” Kelly said, “that the swimming program at the Y is the best-kept secret. We’ve been so pleased with it. There’s really nothing like the Y with the swimming and enrichment classes.” “I’ve shared my success story with the Y with other moms. When you find something that works, parents have to network together to help each other,” Kelly said. We say that Kelly and Joel know the Y is a place where everyone is valued and engaged to the best of their abilities.

“We’re fortunate that a program is offered for special needs. The instructors are marvelous.

WHAT’S YOUR Y STORY? Do you have a great story about how the Y helped turn your life around? Or did you grow up in the Y and now take your kids there – continuing the family tradition? Or maybe you’ve been a Y volunteer, serving the community? We want to hear and learn from you. Please post your story on our Facebook page and we may contact you to get more information. Your story and photo could be featured in one of our future program guides and/or on our website. Watch for some of our interesting Y stories soon!
