Preparing for the Big One The United States Geological Survey estimates that Southern California has a 99.7% chance of experiencing a large, destructive earthquake in the next 30 years. Geologists have identified dozens of dangerous fault lines that lie around and within the City of Los Angeles, capable of producing widespread damage. Furthermore, the 1994 Northridge Earthquake killed 57 people and injured 8,700 more, and it occurred on a fault line that scientists didn’t even know existed! (see Earthquake continued on page 2)

Valley Public Safety Advisory Committee Building a Community

By Deputy Chief Daryl Arbuthnott

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) recently established the Operations Valley Bureau 2015.

designed to better serve all San Fernando Valley communities. The implementation of this significant administrative and business change occurred on January 11, relationship with our valley neighbors.

Each day represents new progress in ensuring a more responsive fire department

One of my top priorities is to establish an LAFD Valley Public Safety Advisory Committee (VPSAC) to ensure fire department related community issues within the San Fernando Valley are shared and appropriately addressed. My of six to nine community volunteers and representatives from the Fire and Police Departments. In an effort to identify potential nominees for committee membership, I have solicited the assistance of local City Council members, other community leaders. Nominees have been identified and invited to attend an upcoming Nominee Reception and informational meeting being held in June. This initial meeting is designed to provide me the opportunity to meet the additional information regarding the LAFD’s Valley Public Safety Advisory Committee. Final committee membership selections will occur following the Nominee Reception meeting, and the first official meeting of the new Valley Public expected to be held in September 2015. In addition to the VPSAC, the Los Angeles Fire Department also has a number of volunteer programs available for youth and adults to serve our community. These programs include: the LAFD’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), the Auxiliary Communications Service and our Fire Cadet Program for youth ages 14-20 years old. I invite you to learn more about some of these fun and specialized programs by visiting our volunteer link on the Departments website at:
