Make sure your makeup is going to stay looking great! Don’t curl your lashes right after washing your face (the curl holds much better when lashes are dry) and skip cream blushes, eyeliners and eyeshadows, which tend to absorb into skin over time (powders last longer).

Dusit Gourmet The Laboratoire of Lusciousness

W

atching the chocolatier make chocolates and prepare waffles from behind the glass vitrine (they call it the laboratoire) and seeing the display of colorful macaroons clustered together inside glass jars is enough to lure you inside Dusit Gourmet. And when you think that’s all, you go in to realize that the place has yet more to offer by smelling the aroma of fresh bakeries and pastries that confirms that you entered the right place. Dusit Gourmet revolves around four main concepts; the first being the boulangerie concept which is fulfilled by producing different types of bread and a wide range of canapés. The second concept is the bar concept. Bar here means a place that serves all kinds of Italian coffee such as cappuccino, espresso, macchiato, mokaccino, etc. To achieve the purpose of rewarding customers’ senses, Dusit Gourmet uses Italy’s favorite coffee Lavazza. Then comes the third concept that is the retail boutique that will take you through a journey into the taste of an array of food items. The food boutique hasn’t been fully launched yet, it will soon be selling very special types of spices and pasta, sparkling fruit juices, French pastry, praline, macaroons, mini patisserie and oriental sweets too. The boutique will also sell recipe books and even luxurious glassware. Lastly, there’s the concept of a Thai style café in a relaxing, tranquil, pollution-free ambience. The café serves bakery, pastries, light snacks, soups, sandwiches and hot and cold drinks. For breakfast, they have Swiss breakfast, continental breakfast and French breakfast. People at Dusit Gourmet believe that one eats with one’s five senses; thus, they follow a gourmet approach to food and they greatly focus on the presentation. All food is prepared from fine ingredients, most of which is imported. For making chocolate, the renowned Belgium chocolate Valrhona is used. Vegetables are imported from the biggest vegetable market in Holland but they originally come from all over the world, and some of course are local. Dusit Gourmet is famous for their à la minute waffles that are presented with a variety of sauces. Another specialty is the tramezzini; a northern Italian sandwich that takes the shape of a shell and is stuffed with fillings such as tuna, mozzarella and smoked salmon. Moreover, there’s “Eat well, feel well” corner for light and dietary food. Also the ice cream served at Dusit Gourmet is the luxury ice cream brand Häagen-Dazs. Dusit Gourmet is open daily from 7am till 11pm. So you can enjoy the scrumptious taste in the outdoor area where shisha is also available. There are big screens for customers to watch the important sports events or their favorite TV series during Ramadan as the theme and the setup of the place changes according to different events and occasions. The place is also suitable for holding private parties for which there’s a special menu. Dusit Gourmet also provides catering for special events. They are planning to be soon offering a home delivery service in the neighboring area. October 2012 |

OMG, I’m Getting Married!

”!

Your Detailed Guide For Everything You Need By: Farah Asfour Alaa Essam El Garhy

The Veil Dilemma: Choosing The Right Veil For Your Face • For a diamond or oval-shaped face: Choices are unlimited, as long as they complement your gown. • For a round, full face: Choose a veil that falls along the sides of the face. • For a square jawline: A longer veil will work better than a short wide one. • For an oblong face: Look for waterfall veils paired with a wide tiara, wreath, or bun wrap. • For heart-shaped or triangular face: The best choice is a back piece. • For a rectangular face: Try more voluminous veils.

3 Savior Bridal Shoes • High heels will make your legs look more toned (keeping your calves flexed) and they’ll also ensure better posture. • If you want a bit of added height but aren’t used to stilettos, you can consider platform heels, or lower kitten heels. • If you prefer a flat, satin ballet slippers make beautiful bridal shoes. TIP! Buy gel pads for all sort of shoes for a comfy feeling all night!

Wearing a dress that is too revealing can send off the wrong message. • If you try on a dress and look in the mirror and think, “Hmm... is this really OK to wear?”, then don’t wear it. • If you want to wear black, then make it unique. When wearing a black dress, make sure your accessories stand, go with bright and bold colors. • Obviously, accessorizing is always a definite do! Adding a little bit of extra glitter and sparkle to your ensemble is almost always encouraged and is a great way to really make yourself stand out and add a little extra of your own unique personality to an evening gown. 1.My makeup always looks shiny in photographs. How can I avoid this happening? You need to start using an oil-controlling skincare routine straightaway. This means cleansing and toning daily with specially formulated oil-free products and only using a moisturizer on dry areas. Use an oil-free foundation and powder and blot at regular intervals with absorbing sheets rather than reapplying powder, which can leave your skin looking caked. Use: Neutrogena Oil-Free range, L’Oreal Visible Lift Minimizing Oil Free Foundation144 Natural Ivory, and Lancôme ‘Blush Subtil’ Sheer Delicate Oil-Free Powder Blush. 2.What’s the number-one makeup trick for my dreamy wedding-day glow? A glint of pale shine at the inner corners of the eyes! Create it with a light metallic shadow or liner, or some highlighter, this move not only brings light to the eye area for a look of wide-eyed charm, it also adds just a hint of fairy-princess etherealness to your makeup. Feature some shine on the bridge of the nose as well. Use: Revlon Magic Eye Liner Pencil Seductive Silver 92. 3.I need a quick list of honeymoon makeup essentials, any ideas? You need SPF foundation, waterproof mascara, powder bronzer/blusher, powder compact, shimmer cream, 5 eye shadow colors, candy flavored lip glosses in different shades, demure and bright shades of lipsticks, tweezers, an angled blush/bronzer brush, a brush for applying eye shadow, sun screen with SPF, after sun lotion, cleanser, moisturizer, frizzease, curler, hair dryer, large paddle brush, hair bands, manicure set, pedicure set, small nail clippers, blister plasters and razors/shavers. Buy a brand ready-made makeup kit. Use: Clarins, Pupa & Elizabeth Arden. Or opt for a nice, spacious makeup bag that can carry all your essentials like: Anya Hindmarch studded leather cosmetics case or Lanvin quilted leather cosmetics case.

Beauty

Avoid These Mishaps

On Your Day!

Y

By: Jolanda Bakker

our big day is the one day you don’t want to risk looking like one of the following: a clown! A ghost. A mime. So how can a blushing bride get her makeup just right? Start by avoiding a few key mistakes. We tapped beauty pros with beaucoup experience making brides gorgeous for their expertise on what not to do and what products can help you avoid them.

1

Mistake :

Wearing too little coverage

Depending on the bride’s skin type, you want more of a matte finish for the oilier skins and a radiant finish for a drier skin. The most important part of photography is the finish to the skin. You want the face to look flawless. For example: If under eye circles are not concealed properly, the eyes will get lost in the photo. Try this product: Clinique’s Airbrush concealer. Every bride wants to look fresh and awake. This under eye concealer diffuses light to hide dark circles and reduces puffiness. Not only does it hide shadows but it also illuminates and perfects your complexion and eye area.

3

Mistake :

2

Mistake :

Skimping on the blush

Wear more blush than you think you should, because that’s usually the first thing to go, aside from lips. Usually when I look at my pictures, I could use more blush. If you ever see a celebrity in person, they’re always wearing more makeup than they look like they do in magazines. A little bit of extra blush can go a long way to adding color to the face and giving that warm glow without looking too bronze. Try this product: MAC Powder Blush. If you pinch the end of your finger so the blood pools in the tip, whatever color that is going to be the most naturallooking color on you.

Sticking with a too natural lip gloss

People say, ‘I love the natural look,’ but you can still pick a nice color that’s a shade deeper than your lip tone. Wear something on your lips a little darker than normal, because it’s going to make the pictures so fantastic. Choose a shade darker than your lip tone in the beige family, or you can line the lip and fill it in with a liner, then wear the gloss you always wear. Try this product: Laura Mercier Lip Pencil in Naked. It’s very natural. Especially if you’re fair skinned. 46 |

Bonus Bridal Makeup Tip Stay away from bold eye shadows. Now is not the time to experiment. Maybe you’re having a holiday wedding and think silver and gold may be appropriate, but let’s leave that to holiday ornaments. Or those trendy new colors from your favorite cosmetics company are all the rage, but save them for another day. Keep your eye shadow simple, clean and neutral toned.

4

Mistake :

Not having products to retouch

If you have a professional artist do your makeup, you want to make sure you have the same products on hand to touch up with throughout the day. One reason for this is to control shine, and the other reason is you want to make sure your skin tone looks the same throughout the night in photos. The same applies with your lip color; you want to make sure your lips are touched up with the same color all day or night long. Try this product: Jane Iredale Lip Fixation. This stain will last all day long, through kisses and conversation, with minimal touch-ups needed. It’s great for photography and can be worn with or without the gloss.

5

Mistake :

Letting eye makeup melt and smudge

I hate to see a bride with raccoon eyes. There are so many budge-proof products out there nowadays, no need for any mishaps here. Try this product: MAC Fluidline Gel eyeliner and Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer. Use all waterproof products.

2 6 Mistake :

Bonus Bridal Makeup Tip Wear a white top when you have a makeup trial run. A color or a black shirt changes the whole color palette. Or if you don’t have a white top, put a white towel around your neck and take a few pictures like that. It gives a nice feel for how the palette is going to come out.

Not checking for shine

The last thing a bride wants to see in her photographs is shine! When the skin is shiny, you lose the true features of the face. Try this product: bareMinerals Prime Time. Primers help with the longevity of your makeup, help to control oil and shine, and also help even out skin’s texture. It also creates a radiant finish. Great for oily, sensitive, or problemprone skin. October 2012 |

Garen Berge GEMOLOGIST, DIAMOND LOVER & Owner of

Berge Jewellery By: Farah Asfour

L

ocated in the prestigious district El Korba, Heliopolis is Berge Jewellery; one of the oldest jewellers that is still present until today with its long history in the jewellery industry. Established in 1952, Berge Jewellery started by acquiring a workshop in Khan el-Khalili area serving the Egyptian and tourist communities. In 1956, Berge Jewellery evolved to include jewellery design, manufacturing and retail by opening a shop in Tanta Street, Heliopolis. During the years, the location of the shop changed several times. Today Berge has two shops; one in El Korba, Heliopolis and the other is in Fairmont Heliopolis & Towers. We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Garen Berge, the owner of Berge Jewellery and the son of its founder Mr. Berge Touloumbadjian, on the occasion of Berge’s 60th anniversary. TELL US ABOUT YOUR START IN THE JEWELLERY INDUSTRY. When I was a kid, I used to go with my father to work during the vacations as kids are always curious to watch their fathers at work and know what they 48 |

| October 2012

do. Gradually I started to like the jewellery industry. Afterwards when I grew up and started working with him, the beginning was at the workshop where I spent two years with the craftsmen to gain experience and learn the basics and origins of jewellery making. Then I got my Diploma of Gemmology from HRD Antwerp, Institute of Gemmology in Belgium. HRD is the Diamond High Council in Belgium. After getting my diploma, I returned to Egypt and I gradually became responsible for all the work. Today, I enjoy every second of what I’m doing and I’m proud that I followed my father’s path and was able to enhance the brand and keep its good reputation.

DID YOU ENCOUNTER ANY DIFFICULTIES AT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR WORK? Of course, I did. At the beginning I was a little bit naïve and I didn’t have enough experience in knowing how to deal with the Egyptian market. Also as a result of studying in Europe, I had ideas that I realized afterwards weren’t suitable for the Egyptian market. However, this was of great benefit to me. It made me think about how to adapt my ideas to the Egyptian market and I started to combine Berge’s taste with the Middle Eastern taste. So you can say that Berge’s designs are a mix of oriental taste and European taste with the touch of Berge added to them. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT DISTINGUISHES BERGE FROM OTHER JEWELLERS? One of the most important characteristics of Berge is that we are specialized in custom made jewellery. We have our own designers who create special designs only for our shop. Our products are known for their high quality, unique taste, elegance, sophistication and classiness. At Berge, you can find beautiful pieces of jewellery in all price ranges, which is generally difficult in jewellery. We never deliver any jewellery piece without being 100% convinced with its quality, design and taste. HOW LONG DOES MANUFACTURING A CUSTOM MADE PIECE TAKE? It depends on how complicated the design is but the average is three months. WHAT IS THIS YEAR’S FASHION TREND IN DIAMOND? I believe that diamond has no fashion; it’s always classic and you can wear it for so many years. Diamond is not like clothing where one year a color, for example, is in style and the year after, it becomes out of fashion. When it’s a nice piece of jewellery, it stays forever. And that’s why we always tell our clients, “A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever.” This year, there’s a trend towards semi-precious colored stones with the three colors of gold; white, yellow and rose. But people here in Egypt appreciate diamonds more than semi-precious stones. HOW DID YOUR PROFESSION AS A JEWELLER AFFECT YOUR PERSONAL LIFE? I have a meticulous job which has made me a perfectionist, I have great attention to detail and I can easily notice imperfections. Unfortunately, this can be

sometimes irritating to me and to others. On the other hand, my job has taught me to have a great deal of patience because I have to be extremely patient with ladies when they buy jewellery. FINALLY, WHAT ARE THE TIPS YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE TO LADIES ON BUYING JEWELLERY? Ladies, be confident and base your decision on your own taste and not on other people’s taste. You buy jewellery to satisfy yourself and you’re the one who’ll wear it all the time, so you have to both enjoy choosing it and wearing it. Always buy jewellery when you are in a good mood so that you make the right choice. If you’re not in a good mood, it’s Berge’s duty to put you in a good mood. AND WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO THE BRIDE AND GROOM ON CHOOSING THEIR WEDDING RINGS? The bride and groom should set their budget beforehand. Needless to say, they should be in love with each other.

I enjoy every second of what I’m doing and I’m proud that I followed my father’s path and was able to enhance the brand and keep its good reputation. Garen Berge October 2012 |

Faces of Egypt

I love keeping the crowd satisfied while adding my character to the music, showing my milestones and my own taste.

Lyon Avakian

DJ Lyon Avakian When and why did you choose to become a DJ? Since I was 14 my mum encouraged me and made me listen to lots of music while she was working at home, that was how I loved music. I started working in this field when I became 18 with someone who was supportive of me, helped me in getting deeper in this field, and pushed me forward. What do you think are the drawbacks of your work as a DJ? Every job has its own drawbacks but I believe that when someone loves his/her job, the drawbacks automatically become invisible to him/her. Plus, success, people’s love and their encouragement helps me overcome any barriers that face me. Who are your favorite DJs? And what music genre do you like most? My favorite local DJs are Hany Wahba, Khaled Abdel Rahman, Amr Hosny, Feedo, Ramy Yacout and Hany Sadek (Samba). The music genre that I like most is the real funky vocal house music and of course, some old 80s and 90s remixed songs. In your opinion, what distinguishes you from other DJs here in Egypt? From my point of view, the first thing is my name which is a catchy one, what’s also different is the technique of choosing the music and its sequence while making people dance and wait for the next mix. And it’s also about adding your character and own taste in the music, I love keeping the crowd satisfied, it’s all about loving what you 50 |

| October 2012

do and being unique. When someone hears the music without seeing who’s on the decks and knows that the song is being played and mixed by a certain DJ, that makes a DJ unique. What advice would you give to brides and grooms on choosing their wedding’s DJ and songs? My advice to them is not to only go with friends’ recommendations, but there should also be a clear understanding of music concept between the couples (bride and groom) and the DJ. Accordingly, there should be several meetings before the wedding, this has a positive impact on both the couples and the DJ, and a friendship relation should be created between them. Choosing their songs is the easiest part as long as they don’t choose the song “From this moment” for their first dance! The most important thing is to feel the vibe while the music is being played as if it’s their party and not a regular routine wedding party. Another advice for couples is to be themselves, not leave the dance floor and not waste too much time greeting people. Tell us about an awkward wedding moment. One day I was playing at a wedding and it was so crowded, people were dancing, it was a real peak time, I work with something called Serato Scratch live software and it’s connected to the laptop, a friend of mine came and he wanted to say hello, I was busy mixing the other song and when he felt that I was ignoring him, he closed the laptop and the whole music stopped for two minutes. It was so shocking to me and to the audience as well!

Faces of Egypt

DJ Fiko A Bright Face in the World of Music

When and why did you choose to become a DJ? I chose to be a DJ when I was 17 years old. I was inspired by my dad who is a musician; he plays the guitar since he was 12 years old and he also owns a private business for DJ equipment. What do you think are the drawbacks of your work as a DJ? Working late at night, standing all the time, but my passion for my job makes me forget all the drawbacks. Who are your favorite DJs and what music genre do you like most? My favorite Egyptian DJ is Samba. My favorite music is funky house. In your opinion, what distinguishes you from other DJs here in Egypt? Each has his own unique talent and it’s very hard for me to asses my work so I guess you should ask this question to my fans and clients. 52 |

What advice would you give to brides and grooms on choosing their wedding’s DJ and songs? They should choose a DJ whom they have listened to his music before the wedding, they should share their favorite music with him and they should work on satisfying the crowd which is the role of the DJ. Tell us about an awkward wedding moment. The groom’s car was stolen from the hotel half an hour before the wedding! Worse that at the end of the wedding, the groom who was familiar with playing music spilled his drink on the mixer and the CD player!

Fadi Gwanny The Master of Photography in Egypt & Founder of Gwannian Photography By: Caroline Coussa

W

hen it comes to photography, just one, distinctive name rings a bell! Fadi Gwanny, the photographer who introduced a new aspect to traditional pictures in Egypt. The one who took a given, classic aspect of weddings and turned it to a whole new experience, making memorable moments a masterpiece too… Years and years back, I met him and since then I knew that there is something special about his passion to photography. I was glad to have a chance to catch up and work with him! Want to have an inspirational glimpse on photography, read on… Fadi Gwanny graduated from the AUD in 2003, he worked in Dubai for some time then he decided to come back to Egypt and start his own private business; specialized wedding photography and portraits. Using the latest techniques, preserved lightings and his magical touch of capturing pictures, his name became soon easily recognized for every bride and groom seeking perfection on their big day. Now Fadi Gwanny presents “Gwannian School of Photography” which offers elementary and advanced classes

for everyone interested in photography. Fadi expresses his optimum enjoyment in teaching photography both theoretically and practically. He offers support for all his students, along with critique sessions, and personal coaching as well. For more info you can check facebook fanpage “ Gwannian School of Photography.” With all the flood of new photographers nowadays and for all those who think that it’s all about owning a professional camera, I quote Fadi saying, “People think photography is easy, but as a matter of fact after they try practicing it, they discover it’s science and art. Sadly it is part of our engraved system that photography is a minor thing.” With all his endless weddings, I couldn’t miss asking him about a wedding he can’t forget! After some serious thinking, he told us about a Greek wedding he attended where guests broke over 150 plates, as a part of their tradition of celebrating weddings. To him, the most enjoyable part was seeing the old and the young having equal pleasure in the wedding; where the old and the young both danced their night out… Another funny incident was witnessing the groom lose control and completely refuse to attend the wedding due to bad arrangements and decoration! After some time they succeeded in calming him down and starting the wedding after this awkward situation! Asking Fadi about a notable wedding moment, he said, “Regardless of its repetition, the father and daughter dance never fails to touch me.” For all brides and grooms on the verge of marriage, Fadi offers you his ultimate tips for a wedding to remember, “Plan for your big day as much as you want, but on the wedding day let it all go. Don’t worry about details or stress yourself about them because you will miss the chance of enjoying it, so just let it go on your

big day.” He added, “Having a nice wedding depends on many factors; most importantly how calm the couple is, how much they are willing to let go of the stress on this day. So have fun and enjoy!” Asking Fadi about something he wishes to see in Egyptian weddings, he said, “I hope to see more themed weddings, where couples aren’t afraid to go out of the safe zone and try new things.” Last but not least, he offered his MAGICAL tip for enjoying a boring wedding! “Stop the music in your head, start imagining everyone on the dance floor in an empty, silent room and watch the people do their moves in such a funny way! It works for me!”

I travel around photographing what comes in my way... Fadi Gwanny

yourself, don’t try to imitate what “Be other people are doing. Dina Faltas ”

Dina Faltas The Splendid Wedding Planner & Owner of “Zeena”

What attracted you to become a wedding planner? I love arts in general, I studied Fine Arts and I grew up to be specifically attracted to floral and interior design. Beside this, I find a great pleasure in organizing a special event and seeing it come to life, it gives me such a great fulfillment. What do you do to stand out among other wedding planners especially that now there are lots of them? Yes, lots of people have been joining the market recently, I think this is a good sign and eventually only the best will remain in business. However, in Zeena we love what we do, also we tend to give more space for good taste and creating new themes against financials and normal business rules. But the one thing we totally dig is our customer loyalty. The best thing that happens to us is to find a bride, whom we decorated her wedding, coming to us again and bringing a friend or a relative to do their special event with us. What advice would you give to brides and grooms on deciding on their wedding decorations? Be yourself, don’t try to imitate what other people are doing or what seems to be the trend and don’t stick to traditional ideas only, think out of the box. This is your special day and it should reflect who you are. Also try to look at the bigger picture to create a nice atmosphere and don’t be dragged into focusing on one detail only. Tell us about an awkward wedding moment. Well, it is not particularly awkward, but I find it very strange and different. I planned a wedding for two couples at the same night in the same ballroom. They were two brothers marrying two sisters and they wanted to get married together. The tricky part here was to be able to satisfy the requests of both brides at the same time! 56 |

Sarah Aclimandos &Karim Atalla The Faces Behind TheGiftery.Com

How did you get the idea of TheGiftery.com? TheGiftery.com is cofounded by us (Sarah Aclimandos and KarimAtalla). While I (sarah) was studying abroad I missed a lot of weddings and special occasions and had no access of sending anything to anyone in Egypt from a credible source. I was also doing studies on ecommerce in Egypt which all led to TheGiftery.com concept a platform where people could create their gift lists and shop from stores they already know and trust. I partnered with Karimand turned this idea into a real functional business model. It then occurred to us: how many times did you go to a wedding and didn’t send a gift and then wish you wouldn’t bump into the couple before you do? How many times did your friends have babies and you remember to send them a gift when the kid is actually almost going to school? How many times do you suddenly remember you’re invited for dinner and the last thing you want to do is stop at a store and buy a gift? … This is where www.TheGiftery.com comes to the rescue. We do same day and next day delivery anywhere in Egypt, selling at the exact same prices as the stores.

58 |

| October 2012

Did you face any obstacles when you started to implement your idea? Of course, the concept of buying online in Egypt is still feared by many people, we found solutions to ease people in like having a phone ordering service, cash on delivery services and gift idea and suggestion services for people who are not very comfortable searching and browsing. The biggest obstacle is to have people trust the system, once they do and once they see how convenient it is they always come back.

I’ve always believed that www. TheGiftery.comwas the natural evolution of the gift list concept, turning it from a taboo to the most practical method for buying gifts. I’m glad that we were the first people to realize it.

Sarah Aclimandos

How many brands do you have on TheGiftery.com? TheGiftery.com sells for more than 85 stores, like Table Royale, Cozy Casa, Alex Toys, Villeroy&Boch, Bose … etc. Each store carrying a range of different brands making TheGiftery.com a one stop shop for any gift needed.

Don’t you think that most people in Egypt are still not used to the idea of online shopping and that they prefer to see first what they are buying? The whole idea of TheGiftery.com revolves around shopping from stores you already know but online; stores that have high credibility already established and high standards. Online shopping is relatively new in Egypt, and if you are buying a gift, you need to be assured that it will be the way you expect it to be. You don’t want to buy a fake Montblanc pen and get ripped off. At TheGiftery.com you can take your pen and exchange it at the store if you want to because we are dealing directly with them. You also need to know where and how to exchange your gifts. Going online was mainly to solve a lot of problems we face

while shopping like traffic, parking, waiting till the gift is wrapped, then taking the gift and delivering it yourself. Who has time for this these days? The major advantage of being online and selling products from existing shops in Egypt is to convenience shoppers to shop from home or from the office and have gifts and products delivered anywhere in Egypt. As more shops or department stores offer their products online, the benefit of having more than 85 brands on one site will be highly valued as it is similar to shopping at a mall. Moreover, the fast pace of life in Egypt with traffic to keep in mind and the less time available for Instore shopping, will draw more shoppers to online shopping. And so, we think one of the benefits TheGiftery. com has to offer is being able to shop your favorite stores on your lunch break from the office or on your free time from the comfort of your living room while ensuring fast and safe delivery that is insured. We also offer different modes of payment; cash or credit card. For those still not accustomed to online payments, cash collections can be made even if you are sending the gift to someone else, to make the experience as convenient as possible. Credit card payments are secured by the Arab African international Bank.

I can assure you that it is never a bad time to start on great business idea, it all comes down to how you manage your resources and deal with the uncertain factors around you to make them work to your favor. We launched TheGiftery.com one month before the revolution and still managed to a have considerable growth figures.

ou are about to tie the knot and now it’s time to share everything with him, including decorating your new home. These tips will help you to bring your unique styles together and get the job done, especially when it comes to your bedroom, where you are forced to share your personal living space with your spouse. Look through design and decorating magazines. Tear out photos of interiors that you like, then make two piles, his and yours. 62 |

Be dramatic: Don’t be afraid to add a little drama with a deep wall color like rich chocolate. You’ll feel enveloped at night, which will ease you into your zzz’s a lot faster. Keep the room from feeling too heavy by balancing it with a white headboard. You can pick up the wall color again with plush throw pillows.

Share your decorating ideas with the designer. The more information you can provide the designer, the quicker and more accurately s/he will be able to help you. This is when you pull out that pile of photos you both ripped out of the decorating magazines. The entire plan and inspiration for a room usually revolves around an area carpet, fabric swatch or a piece of artwork that you both agree on (this is the key element, you both need to love it). >> October 2012 |

Add luxe linens and pillow. Buy a set of soft sheets that make you want to climb into them at night. Most sheets top off at softness when you reach a 500 thread count. Cover the bed with a fluffy down duvet, a heavy wool blanket, or a soft cotton quilt. Then, toss a gorgeous throw onto the foot of the bed.

Snag hotel-suite style. If you have room, add a chair to a corner of your bedroom, which will make your room seem larger. (And hey, you need someplace other than the floor to toss your outfit outtakes!) Or consider an upholstered bench at the foot of the bed. Be sure to buy a headboard to give your bedroom a hotel-chic look that a bed frame can’t do on its own. Add eye-catching accents. When you wake up, why not see beautiful things? It could be a painting on your wall or an antique quilt that’s draped over a chair. Put your favorite items on display on bedroom shelves, along with art books, glassware, and anything with a burst of color. Soften the lighting. To make your bedroom calm, a dimmer is a lighting must-have. Use it for everything from overhead ceiling lights to pendant and bedside table lamps. For an eclectic bedroom look, mix and match by going with different bases with matching color.

The bed has become a place of luxury to me! I would not exchange it for all the thrones in the world Napoleon Bonaparte

Pick your bed! • A bed with storage, or with two storage drawers, is the perfect option for couples who live in a small house or apartment, where you need to maximize space. Using lively colors and bold graphics on your sheets and bedding will hide the simplicity of most beds with storage. And you will be able to keep extra blankets or your clothes in the drawers. If you like romance then no bed screams romance quite like one with a canopy. There’s something about getting cozy under a tented bed that puts love in the air. • Couples that want to feel like they live in a fairy tale should pick a canopy bed, keep fresh flowers on their nightstand, and wear flowy, frilly lingerie to bed. • For the modern zen couples, go for clean lines and uncomplicated design. A platform bed offers modern appeal and also fits well into homes with Asian design. The two styles mesh well together, which is why a platform bed can work in many different kinds of homes. If you are the type of couple that keeps the table tops clutter free and likes symmetry in your design, you should consider a platform bed. They’re low to the ground and provide a pleasing aesthetic. Treatment will depend on what’s causing the bleeding.

How frequent should I wash my hands?

Is it true that antibiotics won’t work if I have a cold or flu? Yes, it is true. Colds, flu, most sore throats, and bronchitis are caused by viruses, and antibiotics do not help fight viruses. Plus, taking antibiotics when you have a virus may do more harm than good. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment. When you are prescribed an antibiotic, take it exactly as the doctor tells you. Complete the prescribed course even if you are feeling better. If treatment stops too soon, some bacteria may survive and re-infect you.

* Check with your doctor before taking any medication

When are periods considered heavy? Periods are considered heavy if there is enough blood to soak a pad or tampon every hour for several consecutive hours. Other symptoms of a heavy period can include nighttime bleeding that requires getting up to change pads or tampons, passing large blood clots during menstruation, or a period that lasts longer than seven days. In severe cases, heavy menstruation can interfere with sleep and daily activities. Blood loss from heavy periods can also lead to anemia, causing symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath. If you are having heavy menstrual bleeding, it is important to see your doctor to determine the cause. 72 |

Frequent hand-washing is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading illness. Wash your hands before, during and after preparing food, before eating food, before and after caring for someone who is sick, and before and after treating a cut or wound. Also wash your hands after using the toilet, changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing, after touching an animal or animal waste, handling pet food or pet treats, and after touching garbage.

walking to your daily routine, you could burn about 150 more calories a day. At that rate, you’d lose about another 0.15 kilogram a week. The more you walk and the quicker your pace, the more calories you’ll burn. While any physical activity is good, you’ll get the most benefit in terms of weight loss from activity that is moderately intense.

Do bed bugs spread diseases? No, bed bugs are not known to spread disease and they shouldn’t be considered as a medical or public health hazard. Bed bugs can be an annoyance because their presence may cause itching and loss of sleep. Sometimes the itching can lead to excessive scratching that can sometimes increase the chance of a secondary skin infection.

How long will it take to toilet train my child? Can I lose weight if my only exercise is walking? You might be able to lose weight that way, depending on the duration and intensity of your walking and what your diet is like. But consuming fewer calories through dietary changes seems to promote weight loss more effectively than does exercise and physical activity. That’s not to say physical activity such as walking isn’t important for weight control, it is. The key to weight loss is burning more calories than you consume. So if you cut 500 calories from your typical diet each day, you’d lose about 0.45 pound a week (500 calories x 7 days = 3,500 calories). If you add 30 minutes of brisk

Every child is different. It may take as long as 3 to 6 months for your child to be toilet trained during daytime. It may take longer to teach your child to use the toilet during nighttime when her/his bladder control is reduced. It is important for you to be patient and supportive. If after a few months, your child is still resisting or having difficulties with toilet training, talk to your family doctor. The most likely reason your child has not learned to use the potty is that your child is not yet ready for toilet training.

Atopic eczema commonly occurs in areas with folds of skin such as behind the knees, on the front of the elbows, on the side of the neck and around the eyes and ears. It can occur in small patches all over the body. It is most common in infants: on the face and scalp, and on the outer surface of the arms and legs; in children: around joints on the arms and legs, such as the folds of the elbows or the backs of the knees; and in adults: in the joints, such as inside the elbows or the backs of the knees, and on the hands.

Where does eczema usually appear? Eczema is a condition that causes the skin to become itchy, red, dry and cracked. It is a long-term or chronic condition. Atopic eczema is the most common form of eczema. It mainly affects children, but can continue into adulthood.

explain in a brief way (a lengthy explanation will lose their interest) why they can't hurt others. Go down to eye level and encourage them to hug and/or apologize to the victim. Lastly support the victim and involve your toddler in the child's recovery.

What should I do if my child is biting or hitting other children? Although these behaviors are common and linked to the inability to communicate, children need to learn that this is unacceptable. Instantly say no in a firm voice. When things have calmed down,

What Your Pee Says About Your Health

T

A Trip To The Toilet May Be More Revealing Than You Think!

he appearance and smell of your urine can provide many clues to what else is going on in your body. If you notice something unusual and persistent in your pee, it is highly recommended that you see a doctor and undergo the needed tests. Here is some information to help you in knowing what’s normal and what’s abnormal about your pee.

What Color Says! • If your urine is blue-green, it can mean you’re changing medication or vitamins. If you’re not on medications or taking vitamins, go see a doctor. • If your urine is fluorescent yellow or orange, it can mean you’ve had a lot of vitamin C, carrots, beets, or any food that is orange. Some medications may turn your urine orange too. • If your urine is dark orange or brown, it may mean you have bile in your urine. If you haven’t taken vitamin C or had orange colored food, you may want to see a doctor. • If your urine is brown, it can reveal that you’ve had beans, rhubarb, or medications. Brown urine can suggest liver problems as well. Go see a doctor. • If your urine is pink or red, it may mean you’ve had blueberries, or any reddish type food. Again, medication may be the reason your urine changes color. It could also mean there is blood in your 74 |

| October 2012

urine, either from vigorous exercise or due to an infection. If you’re urine doesn’t clear up in 24 hours, go see a doctor. • A spot of blood! Seeing a splash of red in the toilet can mean many things, some quite benign, others quite serious. For that reason, you should always have your doctor check your urine if you see blood. In an otherwise healthy young woman, the chances are overwhelmingly in favor of it being a sign of a urinary tract infection, but blood in the urine is also one of the seven deadly signs of bladder cancer in both women and in men. Beyond the possibilities of infection or worst-case scenario cancer. Blood in the urine can also be caused by microscopic trauma or tears (not uncommon after an endurance event like a marathon), kidney stones, or as a side effect of taking blood-thinning medication or daily aspirin therapy.

What Odor Says! • Sweet smelling: A sugary smell might indicate the presence of blood sugar that’s being excreted in the urine. And a high concentration of blood sugar in the urine is one sign of diabetes. The kidney acts as a filter for all sorts of waste that flows through the body. But if your filter is damaged, things can leak out of it and end up being excreted in the urine. In the case of diabetes, excess blood sugar sneaks out through a leaky filter and shows up in the urine. If you are pregnant, changes in the kidney filtration system can result in the presence of sugar in the urine. Whether pregnant or not, if a doctor finds sugar in your urine, s/he should order further tests to determine if diabetes is a concern. • Funny smelling: Certain foods, (asparagus, most notoriously), produce a sulfur-containing amino acid. So when the food is broken down in the digestive system, those smelly substances are released, filtered through the kidney, and then make their way into the urine where they create an unpleasant scent. As soon as the food responsible has been fully digested and flushed from your system completely, the smell will vanish as well. What Do You See & How Do You Feel About Your Pee?! • If your urine is cloudy, it can mean that you have some phosphate in your urine, which can lead to kidney stones. If your urine is constantly cloudy, it can mean you have an infection. If cloudiness gets worse and you experience burning or urgency, go see a doctor. • You feel always wanting to pee! Unless it’s truly affecting your life, frequent bathroom urges probably are not cause for concern. Look first at your diet and lifestyle. If you’ve suddenly increased your H2O intake, the reason could be as simple as the fact that you’re filling your bladder up more often and more quickly than you used to, and consequently, it needs to be emptied more frequently than it used to. Or maybe you’ve recently changed your diet to include foods that contain more water (such as fruits and vegetables) and act as diuretics, or begun taking medications (like drugs used to treat high blood pressure) which are also diuretics. One of the common symptoms of a urinary tract infection is an urgent need to pee (often without being able to once you get to the toilet). Growing older can also be to blame for increased frequency and urgency in both men and women; as the way the kidney and the bladder make and discharge urine

changes with age. For men, however, the prostate may play a role. It’s not uncommon as men age for the prostate to become enlarged and cause an obstruction that causes weak urine flow and prevents the bladder from emptying effectively, which then creates the need to go more often. • A little leakage! Stress incontinence is a condition in which the muscles of the pelvic floor can’t handle the increased pressure of high impact activities like running or gymnastics, or even something like coughing or sneezing. When the pelvic floor is too weak to withstand that sort of pressure, the result is that a small amount of urine will leak out. The situation often begins, or gets significantly worse after a woman gives birth. The best solution is to strengthen the pelvic floor by regularly doing Kegel exercises (in which you repeatedly contract and release those muscles as if you were trying to stop your flow of urine). Another type of urinary incontinence is called urge incontinence, and it is characterized, not by weak muscles, but by a bladder malfunction. The bladder will fire without your permission, so you won’t necessarily get the signal to head to the bathroom before your bladder decides it’s time to empty itself. See a doctor! • A burning sensation! If you are suddenly experiencing pain when you pee, it’s highly likely that you are experiencing one of the first signs of a urinary tract infection. Such infections are common among sexually active, pre-menopausal women. That proximity makes it very easy for bacteria to find its way into the urethra and up the urinary canal. Oral antibiotics can clear the infection up within days, and increasing fluids can help flush out bacteria to shorten the duration of the infection. The male anatomy makes urinary tract infections a much rarer event for men, but they can happen and similar signs and symptoms in men can also signal an infection of the prostate. Overall general good health will improve bladder health, including eating fruits and vegetables, drinking enough water, exercising and maintaining a healthy body weight. The classic advice is to drink eight glasses of water each day. The most important thing is to monitor the color of your urine, make sure you never feel thirsty, maintain a healthy body mass index and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Who would have thought your urine could say that much?! October 2012 |

Puffy Dress Syndrome! By: Natascia Paolucci

Y

our special day is coming and you are ready as can be. You have followed a strict diet, exercised regularly, rearranged the flowers so many times the petals have started to fall, changed your mind on the menu until the caterer threatened to develop a nervous breakdown... As I said, ready as can be. This being said, the puffy dress syndrome over shows. Dare I word it? What if you bloated on your wedding day? ... (heavy silence) Yes, I know... Well my dear friend, here is a set of ten tips to make sure that Damocles’ sword does not eventually fall on your head. 1) Watch your sodium intake and make sure you get enough potassium. Sodium (salt) and potassium play a key role together in maintaining water balance in the body. While sodium attracts fluid into the cells, potassium drives the water molecules out of the cells. In order for the body to maintain an optimal water balance, a relatively high concentration of potassium and a low concentration of sodium are required. Indeed, too high an intake of sodium is probably the most common cause of water retention around the abdominal area (which manifests itself as a bloated belly). Often enough, excess sodium also results in bloating and puffiness in other parts of the body, such as the face. To combat bloating caused by salty foods, eat plenty of potassium rich foods such as root vegetables and bananas. Of course, it is also advisable to avoid excess salt in the first place. If you feel low-salt food is lacking flavor, try using spices and herbs instead of excessive amounts of salt. Be aware of the “hidden salt that is present in many packaged and processed foods.

76 |

| October 2012

2) Get some B6. If water retention is the cause of your bloating, you may benefit from eating foods rich in vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). Vitamin B6 acts as a natural diuretic which helps eliminate excess water and reduce bloating. Vitamin B6 is found in a wide range of foods, including tuna, bananas, poultry, and fish. 3) Rule out allergies, intolerance, and indigestions. Bloating may also be caused by food intolerance or sensitivity, which in turn typically results from the absence or lack of specific chemicals or enzymes needed to digest a certain food. What causes a reaction manifesting itself as bloating in someone, however, may not cause the same reaction in another person. Nevertheless, it is possible to point to some foods that are more likely to cause reactions. These foods and food substances include dairy (lactose intolerance), gluten (celiac disease), and fructose (fructose mal absorption). People with food sensitivities have different sensitivity thresholds, which means that some less sensitive people may be able to handle the substance in small to moderate amounts. 4) Reduce the bubbles. Indeed, the fizz in carbonated drinks (even diet ones) can cause gas to get trapped in your belly. Instead, drink water flavored with lemon, lime, or cucumber. Or just reduce the number of fizzy drinks you consume each day. Try some peppermint tea for a soothing beverage that may help reduce bloating. 5) Really, reduce the bubble! Even chewing gum can also lead to swallowing air, which can cause bloating. If you’ve got a gum habit, alternate chewing gum with sucking on a piece of hard candy or eating a healthy,

high-fiber snack like fruit, vegetables, or lower-fat popcorn. 6) Don’t be late about it. Experts recommend consuming no more than 2-3 servings per day of artificially sweetened foods and drinks. 7) Select your veggies. If you’re not used to eating beans, they can cause that gassy feeling. So can the cruciferous family of vegetables, such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower. That doesn’t mean you should give up on these super-nutritious, high-fiber vegetables. Just be careful about introducing them into your diet slowly and progressively or maybe postpone them for after the white day. 8) Treat your metabolism. Instead of three big meals per day, try eating smaller meals more often. This can keep you free of the bloated feeling that often follows large meals. Eating more frequently can also help control blood sugar and manage hunger. So go for five to six small meals each day, but make sure the quantity of food and calories are proportionate to your needs. 9) Acceptable doping. A few studies suggest that peppermint tea, ginger, pineapple, parsley, and yogurts containing probiotics (“good” bacteria) may help reduce bloating. 10) Relax and reduce stress. I know, that’s easier said than done, especially now but the endocrine system does not negotiate. The stress hormone (corticosteroids) is linked to bloating. As such, sleep plenty, laugh even more and have fun. After all, the wedding is also a party. October 2012 |

stomachache and flatulence conditions. • A 4-tablespoon serving of capers provides 0.6 mg iron, or 3% of the 18 mg daily requirement. Restoring the body’s stores of iron is particularly important for women of childbearing age who deplete iron stores each month through menstruation. Iron is responsible for providing oxygen to the body’s tissues. • Adding extra vegetablebased ingredients, such as capers, can bring your dietary fiber intake closer to the daily requirement from the average 14 g daily that most people consume, according to the Colorado State University Extension Service.

Fix with Food

Beat heart burns! Rich and spicy dishes can trigger heart burn so if you find you are suffering then avoid curries, chilies, sugary foods, fatty foods and any acidic foods such as citrus fruit. Digestive herbal teas can help with digestion and relieve heart burn. Fennel and peppermint can aid digestion although it’s important to see what works for you as some people find peppermint in particular can actually trigger heart burn. Many people find that ginger tea not only eases heart burn but can actually be a cure for morning sickness symptoms such as nausea.

To Entertain!

Savior Tips, Tricks & Recipes For Preparing A Party! By: Maha Alfy

For orders check facebook fanpage: Home Made Catering

W

hether you are preparing for a henna night, a katb ketab celebration, or a post wedding gathering, you need smart tips to help you entertain your guests with delicious, presentable bites. You need quick time management techniques, smart food choices and my tricks to get it perfectly done in no time! First, consider your budget and guest list. Determine the number of people you’re having to the buffet. This figure affects your budget and your menu greatly. It’s one thing to do a jumbo shrimp bites or a crab dip recipe made with expensive crab for an intimate gathering of 5-6 people, but something very different to serve the same thing to 25 people! Before you get your heart set on a particular dish, get realistic: how much do you really have to spend?

84 |

| October 2012

Once you know how many people you’re inviting, step two is giving yourself a reasonable budget within which to work. Remember that if your guests are bringing some of the dishes, that decreases what you have to spend (or gives you the option of spending the same amount with one or two dazzling items).

Then create a buffet theme or concept. The best buffet party food ideas come when you have a recipe or food theme for your party. Yes, coming up with a buffet food theme can be difficult, and it will limit the kinds of foods you can make. But in some ways, that’s a good thing, it’ll help you make wise decisions and really put together some impressive, and cohesive party recipes for your buffet food. Example: seated proper dinner, finger foods, mini sandwiches and cold bites, etc. Probably the easiest kind of theme for your buffet party food ideas is a food-type. You’ll pick one type of food, and choose all of your buffet appetizers and finger foods, main dishes, sides, and desserts from that theme. The bonus? Generally, all of the flavors will go together beautifully without having to over-think it. Putting it all together! Hot and cold foods. If you’ve planned your buffet party food ideas wisely you’ll be able to make some of them ahead and freeze them. That will certainly decrease party-day stress. One word of caution: figure out how to keep hot food hot and cold food cold. Food safety is very important. Don’t get sloppy on this step. If you haven’t been able to maintain a consistent temperature, swap out the foods every two hours, less if it’s very hot out.

Then set up the space. This requirement means you have to think about how you’re setting up the buffet space so that electrical items have adequate outlets. You also need a good space for plates, utensils, condiments, and seasonings. I recommend keeping beverages separate, it’s far too easy to accidentally bump people in a buffet line and have the drinks land on the carpet or people’s clothing. Once you set up the buffet give it a dry run. Can you reach everything easily? Does the setting make sense in terms of placement (for example, are the condiments adjacent to the food for which they’re intended)? Do items that need to be sliced have suitable space (if not, pre-slice them)? Just look with a critical eye knowing how crowded your party is going to be. Last but not least it’s time to dress up your table. If you want simple and elegant, just a few flower petals sprinkled around dishes work wonders. Having bread bowls, colorful baskets, napkins in a highlight color and some type of centerpiece also brings out more character. >>

The power of men doesn’t lie in muscles only; it lies in keeping his word, being up to what he says, fulfilling his promises. Not only this; add up all the below too! 88 |

| October 2012

I don’t want him as handsome as Omar El Sherif (although would love to!), but I would want him to be as masculine as Roshy Abaza! I’m realistic I know he wouldn’t seat me first in a restaurant, or open the car’s door for me (which is depressing by the way!), but I wouldn’t accept him telling “enti akalty batates!” or ask me to pay the bill! I will take his head off ! Not literally but I will find a way to!

I want him experienced in life, a playboy until he meets me! So I don’t feel like I’m leading the relationship or dominant. Worse, to feel like I’m with “Soma el Ashee2!” The key is for the man to always be superior in my eyes, so I look forward to his vision and believe in him. It’s priceless how it feels… I want him stable and mature! I want him to treat the child in me as a loving father, and the woman in me like lady, and the wildness like Tarazan! I want him stable mentally and emotionally. To be able to envelope me inside his life and heart, wrap me in his protective shell of love, tenderness, and dedication. I want him flexible and outgoing. When I tell him “Yala nerou7 Dream Park” I don’t want to see that look of disgust! I want him fearless and ready to do crazy, unplanned things! I want him secure, not afraid of my success… Not afraid of my dreams, my ambitiousness, my self-development progress. He is secured enough to push me forward, not try to drag me away from my dreams… I want him loyal! I wouldn’t ever imagine myself putting it on my list! But eventually it made it to the list of requirements due to its scarcity! Sad but true! I want him trustful… I want him to mingle with my family and friends, not only but love them too!☺ That’s a pure female request! Only women would understand this! A real man would be a plus to any family, not just a bed companion who shows up on celebrations and funerals! Or tries to take you and drift away with you while blocking you in a golden cage of his existence. I want him responsible, appreciative, caring, and cooperative. I don’t want to change the bulb myself ! I don’t want to stay with house workers alone! I don’t want to do all our household errands alone. I don’t want my car to break and find him solving the problem with “Babe handle it yourself, I’m busy now.” I want to be able to depend on him. A wall I can lean on and would never fail to carry me…

I want to be able to share, freely… Share dreams and plans, share fears, share ideas, share crazy things, and share my day all with welcoming ears. Interactive words and true care… I want him giving and generous. He cares for the people around him, engaged in charity and loves to offer help and advice when needed. Generosity, a trait if that lacked turn a man to a useless creature. I want him a respectable idol father for my kids. Period! I want him to give me my space to do my hobbies and interests without completely letting me go, and at the same time, share common interest but not the extent of feeling inseparable twins! I want my space, his space and OUR space! Plus of course ME time! I want him a so passionate about his work, not a workaholic, but dedicated to his work and career, especially if it carries a message. Last but not least, I want him funny!!! Sense of humor is essential in any relationship, especially if it’s planned to continue for a life time! I want to be able to laugh genuinely and joke with him freely, without the famous Egyptian “Booz”! YES guy have this too!!! At least we have PMSing excuse! I would add up just little requests too, minor ones I promise! He doesn’t get pissed off from my shopping, he loves me the way I am (this means minor to no criticism), when we fight he either makes it up really well or get it all out once and for all, so we don’t have to go through it pointless over and over! Umm anything else? YUP! In laws intrusion in our lives! That’s it! I want him a true gentleman; who knows what is it like to treat a lady. In terms of tender attitude, elegancy in conversation and respect in treatment. I don’t want him to “babe” me by word, but the attitude! I want him affectionate but firm, respectable but negotiable, masculine but tender, I want him everything and its contradiction on the right time! Is that too much to ask for?!

Ohh I forgot to tell you what’s that “him” is called! “Impossible!” It feels like I woke up now and found this impossible is possible only in text on papers!!!

Mother & Child

By School Season!

Stress free Your Kids

Kids have plenty to get stressed about: homework, friends, and sibling rivalry. And as news about the economy, natural disasters, and terrorism fills the airwaves and dinner-table conversations, it's almost impossible for children not to pick up on their parents' stress as well. Stress may lead to lots of problems, including unhealthy eating, inactivity and disrupted sleep patterns, all of which can lead to and become long-term health problems.

A

survey was done by the American Psychological Association and found out that One third of the 1,206 children ages 8 to 17 said they were more stressed now than a year ago. And parents seem to be missing those clues: 30% of children said they worried about their family's financial problems, but only 18 % of the parents thought this was a source of stress for the child. Almost half of children worried about doing well in school, while just one third of parents thought that was an issue for their child. Twenty29% of teenagers said they worried about getting into a good college or getting a job after high school, while only 5% of teenagers' parents thought that was a source of stress. Two thirds of parents

90 |

| October 2012

thought their own stress levels had no impact on their children, but 80% of the children said they learn healthy living habits from their parents. So how do you know when your kid is not coping and stress is taking a toll? Here are some common signs that your child could be stressed out. Younger kids Bedwetting, Crying, Irritability, Pouting, Yelling, pushing, talking back, temper tantrums, Sleep disturbances (includes nightmares and night terrors), Lack of appetite, tummy aches and headaches, Chest pains and Nervous habits like chewing fingernails or twisting and twirling hair.

Older Kids Headaches and stomach aches, Lightheadedness, Bedwetting, Sleep disturbances (includes nightmares and night terrors), Changes in appetite, Stuttering, Worries, new or reoccurring fears, Restlessness, Finding it hard to focus on tasks, Schoolwork suffering, Withdrawal from school, friends, family, Moodiness, highly emotional, Nervous habits like chewing fingernails or twisting and twirling hair, Acting out; aggressive behaviors, Reverting to younger behaviors If you believe that your child may be suffering from anxiety, what do you do? Of course, first and foremost, make it clear you are there for your child by talking to them and creating some sort of dialogue about coping with stress. Tell your child what the problem is, whether it's unemployment or marital issues. Explain that Mom and/or Dad are working on it and that it's not going to mean a major change in their lives. If it is back to school that is stressing them out discuss their concerns and their expectations or fears prior to the first day of school. Try to arrange to visit the school with your child prior to the first day. And always encourage your kids to talk about their school day. Make sure they are getting plenty of exercise and eating well. Inactivity and junk food is a terrible idea in this case. Spend more time together as a family. Eat and play together. A little family time goes a long way. Know that headaches, stomachaches, lack of appetite, trouble sleeping, and lack of interest in activities are common manifestations of stress in children. Take some time to tuck your kid into bed at night. They often tumble out when they feel secured and tucked into bed. Dinnertime and driving in the car are also good times to bring up something like "We might not be able to do some of the fun stuff we used to do because Dad lost his job." If stress continues and anxiety becomes more significant, talk to teachers and family doctors and read up on the issue.

1.

Troubleshoot your own stress The economy is a significant source of stress in our lives these days and those fears can definitely spread to our kids.

Children turn to parents in order to get a sense of what's going to happen. Taking a time out, whether it's a walk or a long hot bath, will calm you down and offer an example of a healthy reaction to stress. Put off difficult conversations with your spouse until after your kids have gone to bed.

2.

Be firm about activity-overload Kids are way overbooked these days. Kids are involved in a dozen different activities and that could result in stress for the kid. It is best recommended that kids get involved in one sport, one other activity, plus any religious education your child may be taking.

3.

Bump bedtime up by half an hour A 2006 National Sleep Foundation poll found that children hit the sheets about 30 minutes past their official bedtime and they may need much more sleep than you think. Preschoolers need 11 to 13 hours a night, 5- to 12-year-olds require 9 to 11 hours, and kids 13 and up need about 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 hours. If there's a TV in your child's room, yank it. The light suppresses production of relaxing melatonin and makes them less sleepy.

4.

Encourage kids to move more Inactivity decreases production of the hormones that help regulate stress. If your children don't play team sports or run around outside with friends, institute family activities such as an after-dinner walk or a weekend bike ride.

Bizarre Wedding Moments By: Farah Asfour

W

e all go to weddings, don’t we? And we just can’t but notice and remember some incidents that some might consider awkward when others might see them very normal. I just want to shed the light on a number of occurrences that are related to weddings.

Facebook invitations! People, don’t depend ONLY on facebook. I mean can’t you see that firstly, it’s inappropriate not to call besides facebook. Secondly, what if some of the guests are not regular users of Facebook. There’s a high probability they’ll miss the wedding.

gentlemen, I know that at weddings we all get excited and we dance till we drop which means that we inevitably sweat. But I highly advise you to keep your jacket on. You don’t wanna look messy in front of the girls by having that circle of underarm sweat on your shirt ;)

Girls, concentrate! when you take your shoes off you don’t look sexy as you might think you do. Believe me, it’s neither cool nor sexy. If you can’t bear the pain of high heels and you eventually take them off, then wear low heels or flat ballerinas from the start to avoid the pain. Ah… and avoid your feet getting dirty!

The BUTs! No matter how amazing the wedding was, there has to be at least one “but.” The wedding was bla bla bla (all the positive stuff) but the music sucked…but the food was terrible…but I didn’t like the bride’s dress, etc. KILL THE BUTS! Wedding gossip! ENOUGH!!!

long endless buffet queues! There are usually long queues of guests waiting for their turn to fill their plates with food as if they haven’t eaten in ages. Is it because food is for FREE?

there’s one part of the wedding that I always failed to understand; when the groom’s friends toss him up in the air! Is it a sign that shows how happy they are that their friend is getting married?! Maybe. Who knows!

Kissing kissing kissing! Cute quick kisses are reallyyyyy nice, while endless French kisses in front of everyone is hmmmm NOT very nice. Guys, we know you two are in love with each. The wedding is enough evidence; you don’t have to prove more.

Imagine if the moment of here comes the bride (and groom) becomes here comes the bride (and groom and mother of the groom)! In some weddings, mother of the groom is always with her son as if she refuses to let go of him. Mother of the groom; LET GO. Mama’s boy, a doomed marriage!!!

Reviews

album

Ladybird Recommends! A hit new album “Men Alby Baghany” by Mohamed Hamaki! Hamaki’s new album is a big hit. Most of the songs are very nice. The only comment we have is that the sad songs in the album could’ve been less and replaced by more fun songs.

books Everyone is talking about “Fifty Shades of Grey” by E L James! When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Want to know more? Buy the book from Virgin Megastore. N.B. This book is intended for mature audiences ONLY!

For all ladies, single or not, read “How to Be Single” by Liz Tuccillo! The name “How to Be Single” made me curious to know what it actually meant. It made me ask myself, “Is it a book that gives tips or steps that women should follow to be single?” And if that’s the case, why on earth would a woman have a target of being single? But it turned out completely different! A good read, available at Diwan Bookstore. 96 |

Ahwak Salon de Thé in Zamalek, we love it With its high ceiling, old style windows, large golden mirror and classic chandeliers, it made me feel as if I were sitting in a home in the heart of Zamalek in the past, which is an amazing feeling. I tried Om Ali, it was one of the best I have ever tasted and it was fresh and came very hot. I also liked the presentation of the Turkish coffee and tea, it makes you enjoy drinking them. It’s a must visit spot in Zamalek for it offers a combination of delicious food, nice ambiance and friendly staff. It’s an indoor shisha café, so it’s not recommended if the smell of shisha irritates you.

For the love of Lebanon! Abdel Wahab now in Heliopolis! After its success in Zamalek, Lebanese restaurant Abdel Wahab will open a new branch in Heliopolis at Citystars. New! Splendid Esplanade at InterContinental Citystars Esplanade Lounge at InterContinental Citystars is the ideal venue – even if it really has to be a ‘quick bite’ before you head back to the office! Spacious and airy, the Esplanade sits conveniently alongside the InterContinental’s spectacular lobby and boasts an attractive array of buffet displays and live cooking stations, plus the option of an à la carte menu. Now out! HTC DESIRE X A seriously entertaining, powerful and social smartphone with a state of the art camera that includes VideoPic™ for simultaneous image and video capture.

Blaze; a new casual café in the heart of Heliopolis! Nice casual atmosphere. We only tried grilled chicken; it was very ordinary, not bad but nothing special. The service needs improvement; I wanted an empty glass and I had to order it four times! The outdoor area is dim, more light please. Parking is disastrous, but they have valets.

La Gourmandise The ground floor is a retail shop for selling French bakeries and pastries and the first floor is a café and restaurant serving light meals, salads and sandwiches. We visited La Gourmandise restaurant, Maadi branch. The interior is in chic pastel colors which makes the place bright and there’s a mix between classic and modern décor. The place is clean and the staff is friendly. Don’t miss the chicken soup with black mushrooms and lemon grass, and their homemade ice cream. However, finding a place to park your car is a challenge; a problem that is not there at 6th of October branch in Arkan mall and the First Mall branch.

For fashionistas! Michael Kors soon in Citystars!

The Roof Bar at Sun City Mall. Is it going to be one of Cairo’s hot spots? October 2012 |

From The Readers By: Mahmoud Medhat

I

spent my youth seeking the truth; I didn’t even know what truth I was looking for. After days and nights of struggling with life and with myself I realized numerous things, but let’s focus now on passing through the ‘Gate’ to reach inner peace, and that came right after the first spiritual awakening I have experienced. This gate is a symbol, it’s virtual; but it means a lot. To me peace with the self started with accepting my destiny regardless if I’m satisfied with it or not, and then high faith in God came right after. Life has a lot of exciting secrets, and the more you get close to God the more the shells of those secrets will be broken. Up till now I said acceptance and faith, the third is good deed and tenderness, as we all know “what goes around comes around” and the more we’ll do to others the more we’ll get in opposite, but let’s talk on a higher level of love and compassion, a kind heart does everything good without accepting a reward, a kind heart does that to cleanse the self from sins and also to tame the self and develop the peace we’re talking about. Meditation is the joy and happiness I get which connects me to God and to the world we’re living; it reliefs anger and generates inner peace and satisfaction. Now comes love, which I see is the essence of life; love cures, let’s love everything and everyone and they will love us in return. Finally I’ll talk about hope, hope is the flame that lights up the mind and makes it able to think clearly and positively; if there isn’t hope there won’t be something to live for. Hope, Hope and Hope. I spoke about 6; acceptance, faith, tenderness, meditation, love, and hope; those are the keys to inner peace or peace with the self, and once you’ll be able to achieve those you’ll have inner peace and thus will believe in yourself and your abilities, and yourself will believe in you as well. Don’t hesitate and enter the ‘Gate’.

The month ahead may prove to be beneficial for you on the financial front, as you are likely to take some pretty sound decisions. Your partner will aid and support you both emotionally and financially in your endeavours. Don’t remain fixed on only one aspect of your life. Get out and get in touch with people. Socialising and building new contacts will come handy. Libra Woman in Love Libra woman is enchanting and charming; she is the master of the art of seduction. Give her compliments and tell her how much she is appreciated. Once the initial seduction is over with and the relationship has become more stable, she will stop her sweet seductive ways, not because she has completely lost interest, but it is because she is lazy in love. Be dramatically romantic, sweet love notes tucked in her pocket, flowers, these things bring great joy to the Libra woman and they make her feel special, which is essentially important to the Libra woman.

Libra Man in Love The Libra man is very popular with women because he is charming, harmonious and can relate to women on their level. Libra men do this to seduce the girl and it always works. He always seems to be on the search for the perfect woman, unfortunately, that does not exist. Look up to him, admire him, he is a sucker for flattery. Do not nag or pick on his inability to make a decision, it will simply put pressure on him. You make the decision if he cannot, he will happily go along with you and deep inside will be happy that you took control.
