Tis the season to be grateful for what we have – and to help give back to those who are in need. This Thanksgiving season, help support more than 60 local organizations with Old Newsboys 69th annual campaign, benefiting children’s charities.
In an interview with Old Newsboys, Bob O’Loughlin, chairman and chief executive officer of Lodging Hospitality Management, explained, “Old Newsboys’ purpose is to help the smaller children’s charities in the St. Louis metro area.”
Last year, he led the Old Newsboys’ effort with his son,
Steve, and grandson, Brian, and this year, his granddaughter Natalie has joined in what has become a family tradition. O’Loughlin added that he finds it inspiring to see the community come together for such an important cause.
Old Newsboys has raised over $20 million for children’s charities across Missouri and Illinois, thanks to its familydriven efforts. Since the organization’s founding in 1957, chairs of the Old Newsboys campaign have included Lou Brock, Gussie Busch, Ted Wetterau, Marilyn Fox, and Jack Buck and other well-known figures. Another family team, Justin Heutel
and Pete Heutel of Sunset Ford, headed the campaign in 2023. Mascots like the Weatherbird, Louie and Fredbird also play a part in rallying support.
“We got involved because we want to give back to St. Louis and this is a worthwhile cause,” O’Loughlin told Ladue News. “We have been involved the last two years and will continue to help children in need.”
The O’Loughlins and other members and leaders of the St. Louis community will take to metro area street corners on November 20, selling special editions of the St. Louis PostDispatch and raising money for those in need. This publication features student journalists from five area high schools and highlights 11 children’s charities awarded grants, while the funds raised will go toward local organizations that support at-risk children, including those that don’t get mainstream attention throughout the year. Donations of any size go a long way toward providing essentials like food, school supplies, clothing and items for infants.
For those looking for other ways to give, the organization has been growing beyond Old Newsboys Day itself. The organization understands that, with less people carrying cash in today’s age, there need to be a variety of avenues available for donors beyond the annual, in-person event. General donations are always accepted, as well as anyone looking to become one of its sponsors.
On top of that, there are several spectacular social events you can attend in support, including the popular Old Newsboys Charity Polo Match, “Pony Up for Kids.” Hosted on September 27, the 7th annual charity polo match let sponsors and guests donate while watching the St. Louis Polo Club at August Busch Polo Club in Defiance, MO.
What began as a grass roots effort by the Globe-Democrat, seeking to raise funds and awareness for at-risk youth, Old Newsboys Day has grown to a well-known holiday tradition. You can donate or learn more online, through Old Newsboys Facebook or by reaching out directly.

The O’Loughlin family - Bob, Steve, Brian, and Natalie - played a pivotal role in leading the 69th annual campaign. Their commitment focused on raising essential funds for local children’s charities, rallying support from volunteers, sponsors, businesses, and donors throughout the community. Co-Chair Bob O’Loughlin, Chairman and CEO of Lodging Hospitality Management, shared, “It’s inspiring to see our community come together for such an important cause,” highlighting the collective effort behind the campaign.

issouri’s education system continues to stress under immense upheaval, from an ongoing teacher shortage to the dismantling of educator preparation programs due in part to federal funding cuts within the Trump administration’s anti-DEI efforts. In response, a St. Louis nonprofit organization is stepping in with a bold initiative.
Launched by The Opportunity Trust, the Gateway Teaching Fellowship is a pilot program created to recruit, train, and retain effective teachers in the region. In August 2025, nine fellows representing four partner schools took part in intensive training and ongoing mentorship designed to prepare them – and their students – for success.
“Teachers have the most direct impact on the growth and achievement of all students,” says Jonathan Caldera, associate partner at The Opportunity Trust. “As teacher shortages grow and traditional pipelines shrink, the Gateway Teaching Fellowship aims to infuse schools with skilled, dedicated educators and ensure they’re supported to stay.”
The pilot program delivers key information in three main areas: First, how early-career teachers can be more effective with strong support through coaching and mentoring. Second, how to support schools in building their teacher development program to ensure teachers can accelerate student success. And finally, how to adapt to the shifting educational landscape to provide more effective teacher training models and methods.
“We target recent college graduates and career changers who are purpose-driven, growth-oriented, and deeply committed to a quality education for all students,” Caldera says.
In addition to their salary, fellows can earn up to $15,000 in stipends over three years. This includes a $1,000 signing bonus, $1,500 for completing summer training, $5,000 at the midpoint of year two, and up to $7,500 by year three. The Gateway Teaching Fellowship is made possible through local and national philanthropic donors who are passionate about expanding access to quality education in St. Louis.
Fellows go through a multi-stage selection process that includes an application, interview, live performance task, and real-time feedback. Caldera says it’s imperative for the organization to ensure fellows have “high expectations, resilience, interpersonal skills, and demonstrated care for students.”
Teachers have the most direct impact on the growth and achievement of all students.
– JoNATHAN CALDerA
“New teachers face increasing demands and decreasing support,” Caldera says. “Budget cuts have removed key coaching, mentoring, and effective training structures, leaving teachers without the necessary support to succeed with students. Adding more support for first-time teachers is an investment to help them find success and stay in the classroom long-term.”
Partner schools include Momentum Academy (Fox Park and Tower Grove South), Friendly Academy, BELIEVE Academy, and St. Louis Voices Academy. The hope is that from the fellowship, teachers across the city will be better equipped and supported to instruct students for years to come. Caldera says this will ideally show a direct connection to high growth and achievement for all students.
“In the short-term, fellows contribute to stronger student outcomes through their school-based work,” he says. “Long-term, the program could inform a regional strategy for recruiting and retaining effective educators.”

While humans revel in twinkling lights, ribbon-wrapped gifts, and beloved visitors, the holidays can usher in anxiety and danger for our furry friends. We spoke with Purina pet behaviorist Dr. Annie Valuska about ways to keep both pets and their parents focused on the joy of the season.
“The holidays can bring a lot of challenges for pets, including travel – whether you’re bringing [your animal] with you or making other arrangements for them; unfamiliar guests in the home; new stuff in the environment [such as] plants, decorations, or special human foods [that] may pose a risk to pets; and a general change in routine,” Valuska says. The pet behaviorist posts animal advice with the hashtag “AskDrAnnie” on Instagram and TikTok, which reaches hundreds of thousands of fans.

When it comes to greeting unfamiliar faces, Valuska recommends giving your animal some control over the interaction. “If your pet would prefer to spend time in a different area of the house while guests are there or watch the festivities without interacting with anyone, that’s okay,” she says. “If they decide to socialize, keep an eye on [your pet’s] body language and ensure they’re feeling comfortable, especially when interacting with children.”
In the event the season’s unfamiliar sights and sounds make your pet anxious, give the gift of space, Valuska advises: “You can help create positive associations with visitors by providing [your pet with] their favorite treats, toys, or praise while guests are present.” To maintain safety around holiday décor, Valuska says the best protection is fully removing access to any hazards. “That may mean replacing a real poinsettia with an

artificial one, storing ribbon-wrapped presents in a closet instead of under the tree, or keeping decorations that pose a choking hazard on the shelf they can’t reach,” she suggests.
Providing plenty of outlets for your pets’ needs can help keep them out of trouble –from enrichment activities and exercise to opportunities to use their noses. “Don’t say ‘no’ to your pet without finding something you can say ‘yes’ to,” Valuska advises. “If you don’t want your cat to climb the Christmas tree or your dog to chew on the wooden nutcracker, ensure your cat has plenty of other cat trees to climb nearby and your dog has appealing chew toys or chew treats available.”
Bottom line, both pets – and their parents –can find the holiday season stressful, Valuska says. “To help cope…carve out a few minutes of [your] day – ideally at the same time every day – to put everything else aside and spend some one-on-one time engaging with [your] pet. Science shows that spending just a few minutes calmly interacting with your pet can reduce their stress and yours.”

Parents have shared nursery rhymes with children for centuries. Modern parents, however, seem to have lost interest in carrying on this tradition, pointing to outdated scenarios and language used. So, why do educators persist in encouraging parents to engage in this practice?
Studies show that “playing” with words – singing or chanting rhymes and silly stories – helps train children’s brains to recognize the patterns and rhythms of language, leading to stronger vocabularies and an enhanced literacy and learning trajectory. This book offers a twist on customary rhymes for today’s savvy youth: “Pop! Goes the Nursery Rhyme” by author Betsy Bird and illustrator Andrea Tsurumi. The story begins with “Pop Goes the Weasel” and stars an enthusiastic weasel clad in overalls. The central character adores the spotlight, so even while the narrator (the sensible Secretary Bird) is relating subsequent rhyme stories, the weasel interrupts each lyrical tale. Mary and her lamb, Jack and Jill,

By Sheila Oliveri
Little Miss Muffet, and more find their respective narrative hijacked by the furry scoundrel, much to everyone’s frustration.
Bird successfully begins eight familiar rhymes that never quite reach fruition due to the chaos. Even so, readers and listeners will find themselves completing the rhymes in their heads, only to be brought to a laughing halt at the animal antics.
Tsurumi’s deft use of anthropomorphism illustrates the action, juxtaposing layered backgrounds with comical images of animals wearing clothes and engaging in human activities. The text itself is almost a separate character, evidenced by the use of light, flowery fonts for traditional rhyme segments and bold, exaggerated, fonts for the contemporary messaging.
Together, Bird and Tsurumi have created a fun and humorous update to these children’s ditties.

ovember is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and while nearly one in nine people over 65 are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, there is so much more to the disease than the diagnosis itself. Leading Memory Care community Parc Provence sees those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia as individuals, each with their own story, personality, and purpose that deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

“Families often come to us feeling anxious or heartbroken, but once they see their loved one smiling, participating, and cared for with genuine compassion, they realize that there’s still so much life and love to be shared,” explains Andrew Renko-Dreckshage, leasing director at Parc Provence. “Memory care isn’t just about keeping someone safe; it’s about helping them live, creating moments of joy, comfort, and connection in whatever ways are meaningful to them.”
Parc Provence, part of the locally owned Gatesworth Communities, excels
in medical support and clinical oversight, with a full spectrum of care all under one roof with nursing, therapy, activities, and specialized dementia programming. Beyond that, the community also goes above and beyond in providing person-centered care, understanding that each resident is a unique individual that will not react the same to a one-size-fits-all care model.

“There is no substitute for human interaction,” says Renko-Dreckshage. “A community that supports holistic well-being for each of our residents, Parc Provence offers extensive, individualized, small- and largegroup programs, one-on-one services, and amenities, all tailored to fit each resident’s unique cognitive and social abilities.”
Parc Provence also utilizes a unique household model, featuring interconnected yet intimate living spaces that create a warm, comfortable, and home-like environment. Each household is thoughtfully structured to include residents with similar abilities and care needs, allowing for more personalized

support and meaningful connections.
Renko-Dreckshage, working alongside leasing team Michaela Jackson and Jennifer Loomis, adds that the three of them find it deeply rewarding to help families find the right place for their loved ones, a community where they will receive compassionate care and be treated like family.
“It’s about more than just finding a place — it’s about building trust and truly getting to know each family and prospective resident,” he says. “We want to learn about their lives, their marriage, their career, and what brings them joy. That personal connection helps families feel confident and comfortable
knowing their loved one will be cared for with love and respect.”
Alheimer’s Awareness Month is incredibly important to The Gatesworth family of communities, participating in the St. Charles and St. Louis County Alzheimer’s Association Walks. These events connect Parc Provence with others in the community — to share stories, offer support, raise awareness and celebrate the community’s mission: to provide compassionate care, raise awareness, and stand alongside all those impacted by Alzheimer’s.
Renko-Dreckshage concludes that he and the rest of the Parc Provence team are always glad to educate families and loved ones

about Alzheimer’s disease.
“Please don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek help early and always trust your instincts,” he says. “It’s truly my passion and the passion of so many others to educate and guide families through their loved ones’ journey with Alzheimer’s. You don’t have to go through this alone. Michaela, Jennifer and I are here to lend a hand and guide you through this process together. Here at Parc Provence, we are honored to support families every step of the way!”

This once outdated kitchen is now a modern masterpiece that honors the home’s history as a true timeless treasure.
“The home was built in 1927 and still maintains all of its original features,” says Aisling Leonard, owner and principal designer for Ash Leonard Design, which remodeled the space. “There are original stucco walls throughout; vaulted beamed ceilings in the great room; original stunning green, pink, and black terrazzo floors on the main [level] that lead into the kitchen area; and many [other] interesting spaces throughout the house. I drew my inspiration from all these elements. I wanted to design a kitchen that sat comfortably within the home – to seamlessly bridge the old and new.”
Leonard accomplished this by eliminating
a door to reconfigure the layout. She designed custom solid walnut cabinets with beautiful brass mesh and reeded glass insets, plus incorporated handmade ceramic textured green wall tiles as a lovely ode to the existing terrazzo flooring, alongside other detailing.
“I wanted to create a space that respected the age and feel of the home,” Leonard says. “Instead of eliminating the five different ceiling heights, I embraced them. I wanted to respect the history and sensibility of the home, all the while creating a modern kitchen that functioned for an active family of five who loves to cook. I love how it turned out and how all the finer details came together to create a kitchen with depth of character [and] timeless elements that will just get better [with age].” Ash Leonard Design, ashleonarddesignllc.com

Feeling cooked and without motivation to make a Thanksgiving spread? These experts prepare everything for you – from meat and potatoes to desserts. (We won’t shame you for moving the meal to your own dishes, but your in-laws might.) Here are two ways to bring delicious food to the table:
Catering and pickup services make it easy to provide a hot meal at home, but yes, you will need to turn on an oven. Multiple St. Louis-area restaurants offer full-feast pickup on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and provide instructions for reheating each dish. Pre-orders have already opened and are required days in advance at most places. However, Butler’s Pantry CEO Maggie Barton says her team designed its Thanksgiving menu with next-day serving in mind.
Their dinner package stands out thanks to its all-inclusive buffet, available for delivery, which serves 10 to 12 people. Choose from a variety of entrées, sides, and desserts, including classics like roasted turkey and coriander-glazed carrots. Switch things up with maple-brined pork loin and apple cornbread stuffing, plus unexpected desserts like the honey pear and thyme upside-down cake or chocolate orange mousse cake. (1414 Park Ave., St. Louis, 314-664-7680, butlerspantry.com)
Smaller groups of three to four people may prefer Expat BBQ’s package offered out of its location in City Foundry STL. The full feast includes brined and smoked turkey breast, with classic gravy, and seven side dishes. Dig into traditional holiday sides as well as barbecue specialties with green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, stuffing, cranberry sauce, potato salad, coleslaw, and collard greens with ham hocks. Each item is also available à la carte. (3730 Foundry Way, Suite 132, St. Louis, 314-924-9728, expatstl.com)
Party of one? You deserve a feast too. The Blue Duck’s individual Thanksgiving package features a smoked turkey pot pie, three sides, and a roll. The restaurant also offers a family meal and à la carte family-sized desserts and sides. (2661 Sutton Blvd., Maplewood, 314-769-9940, blueduckstl.com)
Whether you’re a guest contributing to the feast or a host in need of a little help, you can find à la carte options. Farmhaus is selling whole, half, and one-fourth turkeys – “premium Amish turkey from Arthur,

Illinois, kissed with smoke, roasted, and served with gravy” – available for pickup hot on Thanksgiving morning. (3257 Ivanhoe Ave., St. Louis, 314-647-3800, farmhausrestaurant.com)
At Grace Meat & Three, uncooked turkeys are sold brined and rubbed with roasting instructions, and prime rib is sold already smoked with reheating instructions. The meat portions vary to serve between five and 20 people, and Grace’s half-gallon, ready-to-reheat sides feed between five and eight people. Pickup takes place Wednesday, Nov. 26. (4270 Manchester Ave., St. Louis, 314-520-8182, ordergraceholiday.com)
Order-by dates and pick-up or delivery services vary by restaurant. Call ahead to ensure current availability and to inquire about allergen- and sensitivity-friendly options.

Shoppers can find a variety of items, from designer clothing and children’s apparel to furniture and home décor, all carefully curated to meet high standards of quality and style. Every item represents both value for the buyer and hope for local students, creating a meaningful connection between commerce and compassion.

The spirit of giving extends beyond Ditto’s partner schools through the Ditto Education Grant (DEG) Program, which supports educational initiatives at other local schools, regardless of affiliation. Inspired by the biblical call to “do good and share what you have,” Ditto has awarded over $35,000 in grants to fund projects that enrich classrooms and support students across the greater St. Louis community.
Whether you shop, donate, or spread the word, participating in Ditto’s mission is easy and rewarding. They simplify the donation process by providing a drive-up, dropoff donation area located behind their building. The store has also acquired its own delivery van, making it easier to pick up furniture donations or even a houseful of items.

The Sheldon is nearing completion of an $11 million renovation to its concert hall, the zenith of the Grand Center Arts District structure. Who better to christen its reopening than legendary cabaret singer Marilyn Maye?
For one performance only on Nov. 19, Maye will pay tribute to the late Johnny Carson in a co-production by The Cabaret Project of St. Louis and Max & Louie Productions.
“I saw Marilyn at a fundraiser some four months ago for the first time,” says De Kaplan, co-founder of Max & Louie Productions.
“When that evening ended, there was not a doubt in my mind that I wanted Max & Louie to bring her back to St. Louis. I was completely smitten with the extraordinary joy she brought to the evening [through] her engaging, fun style.”
Maye’s guest spots on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” where she

appeared 76 times – a record for any singer on the late-night circuit – made her an NBC network fixture. Ed McMahon, Carson’s longtime sidekick, saw Hayes performing at a night club in 1966 and recommended Carson book her.
“[Carson] was the longest-running talk show host, may still be,” says Tim Schall, executive and artistic director of The Cabaret Project of St. Louis. “He set the standard for late-night shows, [where] everyone in the country [was] watching and talking about them the next day. And his stamp of approval by inviting you onto his show could make a career!”
[Marilyn Maye’s] huge fans include Harry Connick Jr. and Wynton Marsalis, and all the younger Broadway stars adore her. – TIM SCHALL
Like Carson, Maye was born in the Midwest and has that affable, down-home personality for which the region is known.
“[Carson] called her ‘Super Singer,’ and she was one of his favorites,” Schall says, adding that the host’s best-loved song from Haye’s catalogue was “Here’s That Rainy Day.”

Maye made her first solo appearance at New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall in 2023 at age 95. Now, at age 97, she still has irrepressible energy and performs regularly, including in New York where she has been dubbed “the queen of cabaret.”
Schall adds: “Marilyn connects with different generations through teaching and helping singers put together their own shows. Her huge fans include Harry Connick Jr. and Wynton Marsalis, and all the younger Broadway stars adore her.”
Maye keeps her arrangements feeling fresh, describes Schall, while also catering to audiences who are listening for their favorite selections. “For Nov. 19, the repertoire will be songs she sang on ‘The Tonight Show’ over the years,” he adds. “Everything from classic jazz standards, pop, Broadway…to one of the show’s standouts, ‘I Will Survive,’ which really cooks and has a whole new meaning coming from Marilyn.”
Maye performs on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at The Sheldon Concert Hall (3648 Washington Ave.). For tickets, visit thecabaretproject.org or call 314-534-1111. Additional information can be found at The Cabaret Project’s website or at maxandlouie.com.

At Pali Grill, the Pali Burger exemplifies owner Ahmed Hasan’s culinary lineage – from his homeland of Palestine to his current roots in the United States. Although recognizable as a classic American entrée, the burger Hasan created uses a signature Middle Eastern-inflected blend of ground beef and lamb. The tender, savory patty comes topped with all the typical fixings, plus tangy Pali sauce, a proprietary house condiment that visitors have quickly taken a liking to as a flavor booster for everything from fries to falafel.
The Halal concept debuted in August on Page Avenue in St. Louis County near Overland and features everything from an all-day Arabian breakfast menu and kabob sandwiches to Philly cheesesteaks and chicken wings. “It’s a nice, quiet spot where everyone from working people to college students can [taste] something different,” Hasan says. “You can have Mediterranean, Arabic, and Palestinian food, or you can find something on the menu if you want to have a more traditional American sandwich presented in a different way.”
As a lifelong lover of food, Hasan always gravitated toward the kitchen. In his teenage years, he worked at a Palestinian sweets shop, learning how to make knafeh and other traditional desserts. After graduating with degrees in journalism and political science, Hasan came to St. Louis in 2012, going on to become the operator and manager of a gas station in North County. Many of the food items he made there – from sandwiches to chicken and more – became the basis of the core offerings at Pali Grill, along with newly developed options such as salads and grilled lamb chops.

Hasan works with his brother and brother-in-law, putting out a variety of dishes seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He chose the strip mall space that previously housed Ms. Piggies Smokehouse because of its centralized location. Over the course of a year, the 1,800-square-foot storefront received a full gut renovation. “As far as the dining room, we replaced everything from the floor to the ceiling and wall. In the kitchen, I had to replace everything with brand new equipment,” Hasan says.
The contemporary dining area boasts colorful food murals painted by local artist Adam Brink to lend a cozy ambiance to the 50-seat dining room filled with tables, booths, and window seats. “It’s nothing too fancy but it’s a nice spot with a warm vibe where people can come, sit, and enjoy their time,” Hasan says.
The impressive breakfast menu features around 25 traditional Middle Eastern options including shakshouka, baba ganoush, and an omelet with parsley, tomatoes, onions, and mixed spices. Hasan is excited to give guests these choices; he says it’s impossible to go wrong when beginning one’s day with hot Arabic tea, housemade falafel, and hummus made with one-ofa-kind olive oil from the village of Qusra. “It gives it a different taste and different meaning. When you’re eating something from Palestine, it really means a lot,” Hasan says, explaining that olive trees take roughly 15 to 20 years to grow to a point where they can be harvested. “Many Palestinian families harvest trees planted by our ancestors, making the trees part of our ancestry themselves.”
The olive oil is also available to purchase by the bottle and can be enjoyed by itself simply served with za’atar and bread. Hasan took special care when sourcing the goods in his shop. “The best falafel and hummus is the kind you can eat back home. We try our best to match it. It’s not the same thing, which is why we brought the seasoning from there,” he says.
To produce the flavor profiles he envisioned, Hasan selected specific imported spices to utilize for each individual dish, from proteins like the restaurant’s flavorful grilled half-chicken to its sides of fries. Visitors can opt for something more familiar like nachos and fried fish or get adventurous with offerings such as arayes (stuffed pita sandwich) and grilled chicken liver.
Pali Grill is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Follow along on Instagram for updates and more information.
