This time of year always feels like the perfect time to refresh and start anew.
Starting on p. 39, regular contributor Bethany Christo shares an interview with the founder of Ivy & Ash, the local nail wrap company helping its customers feel confident and rejuvenated with on-the-go, at-home manicure options. These colorful treat-yourself packs will have you more than ready for a night on the town.
And if you need a sitter for that date, don’t miss copy editor and staff writer Madeleine Ackerburg’s story on p. 22 about STL Sitter – a total game-changer for metro area parents.
For an always-needed spring design refresh, flip to p. 38, where contributing reporter Brittany Nay spells out all you need to know about Viva Magenta –Pantone’s Color of the Year.
And if the weather is making you want to leave the house and get out and about, read assistant editor Emily Standlee’s feature on p. 52 about Pulitzer Arts Foundation’s can’t-miss spring exhibitions.
Craving even more art? Turn to p. 14 for contributing reporter Drew Gieseke’s preview of another important exhibition – the No Tears Project at Gateway Arch National Park, which covers the legacy of civil rights in St. Louis and beyond. Gieseke returns on p. 49 with an article about the iconic art installation that recently made its debut at Laumeier Sculpture Park.
          Happy spring, everyone.
          And happy reading!
          Emily Adams, Editor-in-Chief

            Shop Vintage, Shop Green
          By Brittany Nay

Vintage shops have something special to offer the St. Louis metro area. With everything from luxury resale to future vintage products, discover what what these unique local boutiques have in store. ln
          May’s Place
Stop by May’s Place, a vintage treasure trove offering special, sustainable fashion finds.
Boasting apparel and accessories from the 1890s to 1990s, with an emphasis on the 1960s to 1970s, the vintage boutique, located in City Foundry STL, carries “a slightly western-influenced … [to] pretty edgy” collection, according to owner Katie May.
“We like to say we’re a little bit country, a little bit rock’n’roll,” she says.
May was inspired to open a fashion-forward shop rooted in sustainability after working in the corporate world of a clothing industry full of fast-fashion retailers.
With its slogan “Be Green, Buy Vintage” May’s passion for secondhand, sustainable, slow fashion translates to the store, which stocks everyday denim and T-shirts, unique pieces, vintage sterling silver and fine jewelry.
“I really lean into offering extra-special pieces for when you really want to stand out,” she notes. “We also stock a line of vintage-inspired, plus-size dresses handmade by a local designer.”

          East West
In the heart of St. Louis’ Central West End, find ‘future vintage’ at East West.
Among its more than 20 brands and designers from New York and Los Angeles to London and Japan, the unique menswear boutique offers brands such as Gitman Vintage, which pays tribute to the past with its made-in-the-U.S.A. American heritage sport-shirt line and Slow’s slow-fashion, vintageinspired workwear, handcrafted with custom fabrics
that were developed on vintage shuttle looms.
“Our goal is to curate items that we consider ‘future vintage’ … clothing that will still hold value in 10 to 20 years,” says owner Roy Brady. “Many of our designers even use vintage machinery to create the product, blending contemporary design with vintage quality.”
In the airy retail space outfitted with vintage furniture, peruse perennial offerings such as premium heavyweight tees and sweatshirts, hardwearing trousers and military-inspired slacks and hand-selected accessories.

The shop’s stock is constantly rotating, according to Brady. “We offer an everyday, laidback, Midwestern wardrobe … with cuts rooted in classic menswear that takes cues from high-end, luxury fashion.”

          The Vault Luxury Resale
Specializing in designer handbags from highquality brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Goyard, Tory Burch, Kate Spade and more, The Vault Luxury Resale carries today’s luxury styles and vintage couture.

“We believe in luxury for all,” notes Laura Maurice, chief curator and co-owner.
Founded more than 30 years ago by Maurice’s mother, Sue McCarthy, the company was launched to fill a gap in high-end resale shops in the metro area.
Offering a wide range of designer labels and styles in its 7,000-square-foot showroom, the chic boutique has hundreds of items, including size-inclusive dresses in sizes 0 to 22.
“Our shopping experience is one-of-a-kind in St. Louis,” Maurice shares. “We have become a regular destination for locals and visitors from all over the world.”

VEGAN EATS AT ORIGINAL FAMILY SMOKEHOUSE

Alocal chef who specializes in plantbased fare is now offering a comfort food-inspired menu for curbside pickup three days a week on Cherokee Street. Original Family Smokehouse set up shop inside The Fortune Teller Bar in October with the goal of offering casual vegan cuisine from the grill that appeals to people from all walks of life.
The concept comes from chef-owner Brandon Gilliam, better known as “BG” – a St. Louis native who got his start in professional kitchens while living in Fairbanks, Alaska, for a period before returning to his hometown to attend culinary school at the now-shuttered L’Ecole Culinaire. BG established his brand, Original Family Smokehouse, in 2017 and has since popped up with his food at local cultural events including Conscious Fest, Paint Louis and Frizz Fest. When the kitchen space inside The Fortune Teller Bar opened up, BG knew it’d be a perfect fit for the next evolution of his business.
“I have lived in this neighborhood since 2015 and have been a patron of the bar ever since. I’ve always loved this space and kept an eye on the kitchen,” BG says, who hopes to someday open his own full-fledged brick-and-mortar restaurant in the neighborhood. “I knew it’d be a great way to serve our food out of a home location.”
The Fortune Teller Bar is currently transitioning
ownership and completing renovations to the space, with plans to reopen the bar to the public later this year. During this period, BG will continue to offer his menu for curbside pick-up and delivery, all based on his slogan: “EAT MORE PLANT MEAT.”
“The mission of Original Family Smokehouse is to change the perspective of vegan eating for our community and beyond with top quality, plant-based food,” BG says. “Our target market is for those we’ve dubbed as ‘plant-based curious.’ We gear our food towards people on the ‘SAD diet’– the Standard American Diet. We want to show people that you can eat plant-based alternatives and be just as satisfied.”
Specialties include the Chris Burger, named after BG’s burger-loving brother. It features a smoked Beyond Burger patty, barbecue sauce, provolone Xeese, lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion, served with a side of smoky baked beans. He uses a pellet smoker with a hickory and applewood-based blend to flavor his dishes, such as the BBQ Jackfruit Sandwich, which mimics the texture of a pulled chicken sandwich, topped with coleslaw, onions, butter pickles and tomatoes.
“We have a great focus on people with allergy sensitivities. I have a gluten intolerance myself. The only thing on the menu that has gluten in it are the buns, but we also offer gluten-free buns,” BG says.
Soul food-inspired side options include sweet yams, collard greens and Mac & Xeese bowls to pair with his signatures such as jackfruit tamales

with guajillo barbecue sauce. Another one of BG’s favorite rotating specials is his C Food Gumbo.
“The ‘C’ is for compassion. I’ve gotten a lot of food inspiration from my entire family. When I was a kid, I watched my grandmother make gumbo. I took what I remembered from what she would do with that and used plant-based ingredients,” BG says. “I think she would love what I’m doing with it nowadays.” ln
Original Family Smokehouse is open Thursday through Saturday from noon to 8 p.m.

            Exploring Narcissus Garden
          By Drew Gieseke

Stainless steel spheres present reflections for introspective guests thanks to an iconic art installation that recently made its debut at Laumeier Sculpture Park. Created by world-renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, Narcissus Garden is on display through the end of spring, offering visitors the chance to shift their perspectives in more ways than one.
“Kusama is probably one of the most recognizable international artists,” says Dana Turkovic, curator at Laumeier Sculpture Park. “Her work crosses over into different disciplines. The timing on this was just so amazing that we were able to bring this here.”

Located inside the Aronson Fine Arts Center’s Whitaker Foundation Gallery on the Sculpture Park’s grounds, Narcissus Garden is an aweinspiring exhibition that contains approximately 1,000 shiny spheres with highly polished surfaces that act as distorting mirrors for guests who pass by. The artwork was first presented in 1966 and has since been reconfigured, traveling across the world to be experienced by onlookers near and far.
Laumeier’s executive director, Lauren Ross, saw the work on display at a different museum and felt compelled to bring it to the region. It is the first large-scale solo exhibition by Kusama on display in St. Louis and is available on loan from the private collection of Connecticut-based art collectors Derek and Lauren Goodman. The exhibit, which can be seen for free with advance reservations, will run locally through May 14.
“We’re always looking for work that communicates the mission of engaging the community through art and nature,” Turkovic said.
The exhibition presents a distorted reality for viewers, who are the central subject of the exhibition. In a world where we’re inundated with images of ourselves and others, where we can color-correct a selfie or brush away eye wrinkles with a few taps, Narcissus Garden challenges
viewers to see reflections of themselves that can’t be altered. Therein lies the beauty of the piece.
“It’s an experiential work. Your image is in there, but it’s distorted,” Turkovic said. “It’s not the perfect version of yourself. It’s interesting because your face is really skewed, but when you start to look at the photo, you’re seeing all the detail, all the environment, that you get lost in the sculpture. You get lost in the photography of that piece.
This trick acts as a metaphorical bridge to Laumeier’s permanent outdoor installations. It took about three weeks for Narcissus Garden to be assembled in the gallery space,

which is installed like a garden – almost like a scaled-down version of the Sculpture Park and its pathways. In Turkovic’s estimation, these mirrored layouts offer a new way for people to connect with Laumeier.
“I like that this is [an indoor] garden that visitors can walk within, see themselves within and experience in a contained [space] in the galleries,” Turkovic said. “But, you walk outside and have the same experience in the park.”
