During the 2022-2023 academic year, our students completed hundreds of hours of community service, traveled over 10,000 miles, studied more than 50 different subjects and creative disciplines, and attained countless awards and honors. Our class of 2023 is attending top universities across the globe, while many of our young alums will take their first steps into the working world, equipped with the tools to be the change.

From our Board Chair

Dear Lacordaire Family, Recently the Board of Trustees invited the student council and other representatives from the Upper and Middle schools to share with us their thoughts about faith, academics, facilities, and how they talk about Lacordaire to others.

It was inspiring to hear about the mission trips and retreats where every student, no matter their religious background, felt they could deepen their own faith and authentically be themselves. They talked about all the support their teachers provide, academically and emotionally, especially during challenging times.

While some grumbled about mandatory club participation, they were grateful for the opportunities it gave them to lead, for example a shy incoming freshman becoming student council president. Several were school ambassadors and have been writing prospective students with their own personal welcome and support while encouraging 8th grade girls to stay with us for high school. A few said their friends at other schools were jealous and wished they could be at Lacordaire, too.

The students asked for a few more AP classes – like Kinesiology and Fashion Design, more gym time, club sports for the Middle school, and another bathroom for the boys! Space is always at a premium while trying to optimize our three-acre campus, but we hope to find more resources to meet the needs.

As an alumna, Dominican Lay Associate, and board chair, I am so proud of what Lacordaire does every day to carry out its mission. We are more than a school. We are a family of students, teachers, staff, administrators, board, parents, alumni, and supporters.

Lacordaire aspires to be the place where everyone succeeds in our community of belonging, inspired to confidently learn and lead through prayer, study, and ministry to make the world a better place. We invite you back to visit and encourage you to support us in keeping the mission thriving.

At the culmination of each academic year, Lacordaire’s Board of Trustees, comprised of alumni, former Lacordaire parents, professionals, friends of the Academy, and Dominican sisters, convene at their annual board retreat. The purpose of this retreat is to reflect upon the past school year with a focus on the Academy’s next steps. The cornerstone of this year’s June retreat was the Academy’s mission statement.

Since 1920, Lacordaire has educated tens of thousands of students using the Dominican Catholic model, which puts a strong sense of character, rigorous study, service to others, and appreciation for the arts at the center of its design.

These core values have been, and always will be, the guiding principles that inform our mission.

The primary goal of any school’s mission statement is to affirm the purpose of the institution and, in turn, inspire members of the school community (students, parents, teachers, administrators, etc.) to join together in realizing it. The board decided that it was time to reevaluate how we state our purpose.

First, our community of belonging is the heart of all we accomplish. A qualified student who walks through our doors will be met with a club, class, sport, service activity, friend, teacher, or mentor that will make them feel at home. While “fitting in” demands that an individual changes oneself in order to blend with a group or crowd, “belonging,” contrastingly, means that an individual will feel embraced, just as they are, for their unique gifts, talents, interests, and everything in between. Our model begins with this embrace. Next, with the freedom to be wholly oneself, the Lacordaire student is empowered to approach learning with fervor and bravery, leading to growth, discovery, and success.

Learning at Lacordaire looks different from learning at other institutions. As a Dominican school, our goal is to prepare students to become responsible leaders whose decisions will contribute to the common good.

Therefore, the Academy weaves global awareness, environmental stewardship, and community service into nearly every subject that we teach. Our curriculum is indeed quantifiably challenging, but it also asks the student to consider how they can solve problems through the Dominican lens of justice and compassion. This foundation prepares students to go out into the world with the ability to lead effectively and responsibly in any career or role they choose.

OSRO .RM Math teacher Sean Orso returned to Lacordaire this fall. He re-joins us after a one year hiatus... because he missed working for a mission-based school.

KM: Thank you for sharing your story with us! Tell me a little bit about your background. What influenced you to become a Math teacher?

WE SAT DOWN WITH MR. ORSO TO DISCUSS HOW HE INCORPORATES MISSION INTO HIS MATH CURRICULUM, AND HOW THE CULTURE AT LACORDAIRE INFLUENCED HIS DECISION TO JOIN US IN 2020, AND THEN RETURN IN 2023.

SO: I’ve had an “eventful” math journey. I was the kid in class who struggled with math and I ended up failing in math a number of times - most notably in 9th grade Algebra 1. It took an amazing 10th grade Geometry teacher for me to appreciate the creativity and ingenuity of the subject. Also, as someone who struggled a lot in school as a kid, I like being able to understand students from their point of view.

KM: Feeling understood can be transformative. How do you respond when you see that a student is struggling in your class?

SO: First, I ask them how they feel and listen to them one-onone. When a student tells me "Mr. Orso, I don't get it at all," their honesty and openness is already encouraging. From there, we trace our steps back to where the "disagreement" arose with the problem, and then we collaborate on a strategy for overcoming the challenge. Math, like any other subject, should include discussion and Socratic reasoning. The students learn a lot from each other (and I learn a lot from my students) when we all share our thoughts, and not just memorize for a test.

KM: What did you miss most about Lacordaire during your hiatus?

SO: Of the MANY things I could list, I think the Academy's mission and vision are right there at the top. Our students are not numbers, they are individuals with their own strengths and pathways to success! I love being in a school that recognizes the plethora of methods for gauging student learning. And having an amazing Leadership Team that supports their teachers, students and community is a blessing that I cherish greatly!

“MATH, LIKE ANY OTHER SUBJECT, SHOULD INCLUDE DISCUSSION AND SOCRATIC REASONING. THE STUDENTS LEARN A LOT FROM EACH KM: A liberal arts approach like ours at Lacordaire challenges students to think critically and ethically and prepares them to solve problems in response to the needs of our time. Many people do not think of Math when they think of “liberal arts.” Do you beg to differ?

OTHER (AND I LEARN A LOT FROM MY STUDENTS) WHEN WE ALL SHARE OUR THOUGHTS.”

SO: The first thing I tell students and parents at the beginning of the year is that math is a language. It's used to communicate ideas. All of the physical laws that students learn in Chemistry or Physics, they are conveyed using mathematics. When people focus more on the creative side of math, and less on memorizing formulas, I think we can all begin to see the abundance of applications.

KM: You must feel a little bit aggravated when people bring up the left brain / right brain myth?

SO: Yes! I still don't really understand the myth, because there is so much creativity in mathematics that can overlap with all of the academic disciplines. And whether they realize this or not, ALL students are capable of utilizing such creativity!

MISSION TO MENTOR

One of our oldest traditions is the big and little sibling mentorship program. Each year, a freshman is matched with a junior who will serve as her big sister throughout the next two years. Recently, our freshmen were matched with their big sisters, and our seniors renewed their pledges to their little sisters in the sophomore class.

The annual big/little sibling mentorship program is also a staple in our Lower/Middle division curriculum. Activities between bigs and littles will carry on throughout the school year. Mentorship programs help students build confidence and compassion, both of which are key pieces of Lacordaire’s mission.

I am a black, Jamaican woman whose ancestors were brought to Jamaica as slaves. As everyone knows, African-Americans have been treated unfairly for hundreds of years, and I love that [Lacordaire] is appreciative of diversity. I wholeheartedly believe that everybody, no matter their skin color, should be treated fairly. I love how the school shows diversity in places like their website and Instagram page.

Our Mission “RESPECTING DIVERSITY IS VERY SIMPLE IF YOU JUST LISTEN.” Madelyn Hernandez, Middle School ’24, notes that the key to mutual respect is achieved through listening and learning.

“It is expected that all Lacordaire students not just tolerate, but celebrate the differences of classmates. Although Lacordaire is a Catholic school, we often learn about other religions, and we have students with diverse religions and cultural backgrounds. Respect can look like asking questions or educating yourself on topics that you may not know much about. It can also look like standing up for someone...or being sure to correct your mistakes. Respecting [diversity] is very simple if you just listen. “

“IN MY OPINION, STUDENTS SHOULD ALWAYS BE ABLE TO COLLABORATE.” Ryan Morrissey, Middle School ’26, enjoys the togetherness that his Lacordaire education provides.

Forensics Award

Our Forensics Team saw much success during the 2023 season. At the Forensics Drama Competition in February, Eighth-grader Thomas Gagliano '23 won first place with his dramatic interpretation of the movie "Whiplash."

The recipient of this year's Michael Aymar Forensics award is Suhani Kumar, a new member of Lacordaire’s Forensics team. Suhani is the youngest recipient that we have ever had!

"Suhani’s calm and supportive demeanor, along with her extraordinary work ethic and ability to remain humble, was a tremendous asset to our team throughout the year," says Mrs. Thornton, who oversees the Forensics program along with Ms. McFarlane.

Mercer Row Stats Francis Feliciano ‘25 placed third for both the 2000 meter and 500 meter, and Kaili Martinez-Beasley ‘23 placed second for the 500 meter.

Middle School students also set personal records, improving upon their 500 meter times, with Nicholas De Sopo (Middle) '25 placing 2nd overall.

On March 4th, Lacordaire’s Upper and Middle School Rowing Teams competed in the Mercer Row for the Cure Race. “All proceeds of the race went to local breast cancer organizations,” said Coach Houston.

Heading Into Open Water Commencement Speaker Dr. Denise Brown-Allen asked recent Upper School graduates: Are you goldfish or are you sharks?

When this year's commencement speaker, Dr. Denise Brown-Allen, addressed graduates, she used the analogy of a fishbowl to describe the experience of attending a small, all-girls high school. We know what you're thinking: why is that a good thing? Dr. Brown-Allen backed her analogy with the powerful message that "we are privileged to attend schools that are really tiny incubators placed in our big world for our growth as artists, scientists, linguists, writers, actors, comedians, mathematicians – as leaders." Dr. BrownAllen emphasized growth in her address, advising our graduates to go out into the open water as sharks, not as goldfish; to be strong, fierce, and fearless.

THE MISSION CONTINUES IN TEXAS Upper School students and several faculty members traveled to the Texas/Mexico border this summer, volunteering at a Catholic Charities respite center for migrants recently released from ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement).

In August, a group of students from the Upper School traveled to the Texas/Mexico border to serve at a respite shelter–run by Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley–for migrants who were released by ICE and were in need of food, medicine, clean clothes, and help reaching their final destinations.

“It's one thing to learn about compassion in class, but it's another to actually be out there to offer a helping hand to people who have faced unimaginable hardships,” said Julia Rearden ’26.

“Whether it's through volunteer work or simply being there for people in my community, I want to continue spreading kindness and making a positive impact on the world.”

Lacordaire students will continue making a difference throughout the 2023-2024 school year and beyond, emphasizing the importance of their relationships with our partner organizations, including the respite center in Texas. “It was hard to leave [Texas] knowing how much work still needed to be done,” said Ciara Latchman ’24. “Although we are no longer in Texas, our plan is to collect donations for clothing, specifically baby/children clothing, since those are some of the things we kept running out of when helping families fill out clothing forms. We hope to collect as much as we can and send them to the center soon!”

“I am constantly in awe of how our students act through our mission every day,” said Megan Mannato, who traveled to Texas and volunteered alongside her students. “It is a privilege every day to witness these acts of kindness and compassion. I am so impressed with [our students’] resilience and commitment to helping others.”

After being selected as a finalist in the prestigious QuestBridge College Match Program, Kelly Miller '23 was matched with Washington University in St. Louis.

The selective university offered Kelly a full scholarship that includes four years full tuition and fees, room & board, books, and a stipend for travel.

The National Christian School Athletic Association Servant Leadership Award is given annually to one athlete per school who exemplifies leadership by serving their teammates and opponents, displaying Christlike character in their competition, and interacting with others with a deep commitment to building them up. This year's recipient is Gianna Sanchez, who participated on our Rowing, Basketball, Softball, and Soccer teams.

To put Kelly's accomplishment into perspective, less than 10% of applicants to the National Match program received a scholarship this year. Out of over 17,900 total applicants, QuestBridge selected 5,613 finalists to be considered for scholarships, with only 1,755 of those students receiving matches.

This year's graduating class received over $3 Million in college scholarships. That's approximately $150k per student!

After her baptism, current Junior Adriana Barnett’s parents decided that Adriana should choose if and when she would receive her other sacraments.

On Saturday, May 6th, 2023, Adriana, along with her brother, said yes to living a life in the Catholic Church during a beautifully prayerful Mass at St. John the Baptist Church in Hillsdale, NJ. Adriana spent over a year preparing for the Sacraments of Communion and Confirmation, and she was excited to celebrate this milestone with family and friends.

Adriana chose our very own Director of Guidance, Mrs. Kaitlyn Tashjian, OPA, as her Confirmation Sponsor. "We have journeyed together through the Dominican charism and many community service trips throughout Adriana's time at Lacordaire," says Mrs. Tashjian.

To say it was a pleasure to have Moise here at Lacordaire is an understatement. Moise, who traveled all the way from France to join our 5th grade class for the Fall/Winter semester, was a beloved addition to our classrooms, pickleball team, music program, and more.

Students, teachers, and administrators alike will all miss him dearly, but as Mr. de Toustain says, "it's not au revoir, it's à bientôt."

At Lacordaire, we are grateful for the lifelong relationships that we've established with our international students and their families. Giving young people the opportunity to foster global connections at an early age promotes personal and cultural growth as well as friendship.

As a way to honor her Dominican education and her commitment to a life of preaching, Adriana chose Catherine as her Confirmation name, in honor of the powerful Dominican Saint, Catherine of Siena. Moise's 5th-grade classmates hosted a surprise farewell party for him in the gym, complete with pizza, cake, presents, and a touching farewell video message.

Summer Travel Upper School students traveled to the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland in the summer of 2023.

Travel is a transformative and enlightening experience. Lacordaire's annual international trip allows students to break out of their shells and become the empowered young women they were born to be.

In Dublin, students visited EPIC, The Irish Emigration Museum, where they learned about why many Irish citizens left their native country, and how their influence impacted the world.

The group's adventures in Scotland included visits to Edinburgh and Sterling Castles, a trip to the Highlands (& visit with the famous “Highland Coos”), a journey to Loch Ness, and more!

In Belfast, Northern Ireland, the group toured the Belfast Murals, which depict the past and present political divisions. Students also visited Titanic Belfast; a museum that is located beside the very place that the Titanic was designed, built, and launched.

“My family feels quite honored tonight, as well as a little embarrassed, because there are a lot of large families who have gone through our school, many of whom are here tonight.

But mostly, what my family feels tonight is gratitude. Grateful for our parents, who were committed to our education and our faith; grateful for the Sisters of St. Dominic, who founded and ran the school for many decades; and grateful for the lay teachers we had, who were just as devoted to Lacordaire as the nuns.

Our parents wanted integrity, honesty, and grace to be the central values in our lives. So in 1950, they asked the Dominican sisters to please help teach us those values. And boy, did they!

The Dominican sisters were talented, smart, educated, and determined women who could have chosen any life. And they chose to be models for the formation of outstanding young women to be leaders in a changing world. And the world did change!

In the 1970s and 1980s, when we were students at Lacordaire, the Dominicans were progressive thinkers who were ahead of their time. They were committed to social justice; they taught a rigorous curriculum to prepare young women for higher education. As students, we rode the wave that they created for us. We expected to become leaders and progressive thinkers.

The women’s movement was only ten years old when I started high school. And the women of Lacordaire knew that the girls they were teaching would become adults in a new world of empowered women. So they evolved with the times.

Today, lay women and men, many of whom are in this room, have followed in the nuns’ footsteps with their commitment to the Dominican mission. Not only social justice, but environmental justice is now central, as well as climate change, economic issues, racism, migration, and peace and security for all. You will find that in both the classrooms of the Upper School and the Lower School, these themes are interwoven in every subject area.

Lacordaire does not shy away from the important issues facing the next generation, rather they face them head on with grace.

Five girls went through Lacordaire’s Upper School over a period of 15 years. Each of us had very different experiences. Different faculty members, different classes, different uniforms. And each of us was profoundly affected by our time here because of the unique teachers we had and the unique relationships we formed.

My sisters tell countless stories of favorite teachers. They will also tell you there was no “lack of boys” at Lacordaire- they were standing just behind the “boys can’t cross this line” line on Park Street after school.

There have been years when the future of Lacordaire was uncertain. When parents stood strong with the administration to keep the doors open. There have been larger class sizes and smaller class sizes, and there will be more years ahead of ups and downs. As is any private school, we are affected by economics.

As alumnae, my sisters and I give to Lacordaire because we believe that the next generation is poised to change the world. We are full of hope that our children, and their children, will have the tools and the will to actually save our world! It’s a lot to ask, but Lacordaire is stepping up to the plate.

We believe in an education that has as its center integrity, honesty, grace, and an education by teachers who are devoted to social justice and the Dominican mission. I encourage my classmates, my sisters’ classmates, and all alums to stay actively involved in the future of this very special school that is working so hard for the future of our children. “
