Ape Caves and Trail of Two Forests
(18+ yrs) Will you need to be watching out for wild apes on this trip? You’ll just have to wait and see on this day exploring the south side of Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. We start with the Trail of Two Forests, a short 5 mile loop through two forests that stand side by side, but separated in age by 2000 years. Next, we will hit the Ape Cave Interpretive Site and the location of the 3rd largest lava tube in the United States. We will hike the lower cave option an easy 1.5 mile round trip walk, which houses a popular geologic anomaly known as the Meatball. The tube bed is rough and uneven so wear sturdy, appropriate shoes or boots. Plus, the cave temperature is a constant 42 degrees and the ceiling is drippy so dress warm in layers. The cave is completely dark so you will need a powerful flashlight or headlamp. We will end the day at a park on Yale Lake for lunch. Pack a picnic lunch, snacks, plenty of drinking water. Fee includes all admission and parking fees.
