Sarah Jessica Parker – a woman of substance

Sarah Jessica Parker’s fame is such that she is now recognised by her initials SJP. She says Sarah Jessica is fine. “Sarah, SJP, SJ, hey you, anything,” she says. This iconic status came about primarily through the HBO Sex and the City series but SJP’s success started in the ‘70s. Born in Nelsonville, Ohio to Barbara (a nursery school operator and teacher) and Stephen Parker (an entrepreneur and journalist) SJP is one of eight children from her parents’ marriage and her mother’s second marriage. After her parents’ divorce, her mother married Paul Forste, a truck driver and account executive. SJP trained in singing and ballet, her family moved to Cincinnati Ohio and then to Dobbs Ferry near New York City so she could get specialised training. Her mother and stepfather helped develop SJP’s acting career. In 1977 the family moved to Roosevelt Island on the East River between New York’s Manhattan and Queens, and then to Manhattan. They later moved to New Jersey. SJP attended the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati, the School of American Ballet in New York, Dwight Morrow High School in New Jersey, and the Professional Children’s School at Hollywood High School in Los Angeles. SJP and four of her siblings appeared in The Sound of Music in 1977. SJP was then selected for a role in the then new Broadway musical Annie. She played a minor role as July but in 1979 moved on to play the lead. In 1982, SJP was chosen as the co-lead in the CBS sitcom Square Pegs. The show lasted only one season but talent won through and SJP was cast in four films. SJP’s early successes include the NBC movie In the Interest of the Children, The Ryan White Story, Dadah is Death; NBC’s critically acclaimed A Year in the Life series, the mini-series Twist of Fate and the Hallmark Hall of Fame production of The Room Upstairs. Stage credits include AR Gurney’s Sylvia, Annie. The Innocents, Wonder of the World, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Once Upon a Mattress, The Heidi Chronicles,Wrestlers, and April Snow. Film credits currently include 29 major productions. Her film successes led to Sex and the City. The show was an instant success as SJP’s Carrie Bradshaw wowed audiences. Despite the show’s increasingly risqué storylines, SJP kept her strict no-nudity clause in her contract throughout the six-season run. She became a producer in the third season of the series. SJP’s role as Carrie Bradshaw resulted in Golden Globe Best Actress Awards in 2000, 2001, and 2002 plus a 2001 Screen Actors Guild Award. When presented with the first Golden Globe Best actress award the modest star said thank you. “I’ve never won anything in my life.” The show won the Golden Globe Award for Outstanding Comedy in 2000, 2001, and 2002 and an Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy in 2001. SJP won the 2004 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

SJP’s appeal extends beyond her success as an actress, producer, fashion icon, and business woman When the Sex and the City series ended SJP says the hardest part of leaving the show was the return to a gypsy-like life. “It’s like being the new kid in school all the time, for some people is very easy but for me it is not. I don’t really like change, I would like everything to be the same constantly, except that I love being terrified,” she says.

As one of the most influential style icons of the past two decades SJP is linked with a number of major brands and her own fragrances. The original Lovely fragrance was released in 2005. Her second fragrance Covet took the 2007 market by storm and Covet Pure Bloom was released in 2009. This year SJP launched a series of three new fragrances called Dawn, Endless and Twilight. Her fashion line Bitten was released in partnership with USA discount clothing chain Steve & Barry’s in 2007. SJP says fashion is a part of her work. “I feel a responsibility to be presentable, to dress up if the occasion calls for it. But, really, fashion does not play that big a role in my life these days,” she says. Regarding the Steve & Barry line of women’s wear she says there will not be any inappropriate midriff showing. “I really don’t care for it. I feel as a culture, we have seen enough damage done by it. It’s provocative in a way that I don’t feel comfortable with,” she says.

A long romance with Robert Downey Jr ended in 1991 and in 1997 SJP married actor Matthew Broderick. “I tell my friends married life is boring, but that’s just a fun thing to say to make single people feel better,” she says. The couple’s son James Wilke Broderick was born in October 2002. In June 2009 a surrogate mother delivered the couple’s twin daughters, Marion Loretta Elwell and Tabitha Hodge.

1993 Hocus Pocus

SJP lives in New York City with her husband, son, and daughters. She says New York is great because it is not a one-industry town. “It has education, academia, the service industry, arts, publishing, theatre, politics, fashion, finance, as well as movie-making,” she says. “There are so many people who are cogs in the great wheel of the city that a less bright light is shone on our lives.

1996 Mars Attacks!

“It still exists – there are always paparazzi at our house – but being a public person feels less like a business than it does in LA. And you have to approach it differently. I can’t hide behind gates, or in a car, but if I can get a few yards from my front door, I can still get lost in a crowd. I am always moments, just moments, from obscurity on a crowded street in New York,” she says.

Sex and the City

The main movie to watch this winter has to be Sex and the City 2. Share the style as Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda take another bite of the Big Apple. These girls on the go just want to have fun, fashion, and food with a little extra spice and style. The glossy girls are again played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon. The city sets the scene but the sex adds the excitement. Chris Noth comes again as Mr Big, David Eigenberg as Steve, Evan Handler as Harry, Jason Lewis as Smith, Mario Cantone as Anthony, and Willie Garson as Stanford Blatch. The award-winning HBO Sex and the City series and movies are based on the writings of Candace Bushnell. Her vision of real life women set the pace for a new slant on style, sex, and city living. The creative team responsible for the series and the first movie pulled out all the stops on the second feature film. Director, producer and writer Michael Patrick King worked with co-producers John Melfi, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Darren Star alongside executive producers Toby Emmerich, Richard Brener, and Marcus Viscidi to give viewers new insights into their four BFFs. The plot thickens, the glamour heightens, and fans are more fascinated then ever. Photographer John Thomas weaves his magic through the lens. Production designer Jeremy Conway shows life in the fast lane the way we love it. Composer Aaron Zigman has the music taped and costume designer Patricia Field has decided what we will all be wearing for the next season. Sex and the City 2 is on the money to follow to the first film revenue of more than $415 million worldwide. New Line Cinema in association with Home Box Office and Village Roadshow Pictures will present Sex and the City 2 by Warner Bros. Pictures in Australia from June 3.

The biggest ticket in town will be a trip to the movies dressed a la Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda, with drinks before, dinner after and maybe even a little sex. Label is guessing who will be first to arrange a Sex and the City 2 girls night out.

Label We all love the idea of the perfect figure but nature generally favours the few, the rest of us must make the best of what we have. Follow a few simple rules, create signature style, hold your head up and exude confidence Tall women should avoid vertical lines, such as pinstripe suits. Don’t wear one colour top-to-toe. Low-waisted, bootcut, or straight leg trousers are great for long legs. Choose low kitten heels instead of flat shoes. Balance broad shoulders with bootleg trousers, fishtail skirts and wrap-around tops. Halter-necks and dainty tops with shoe string straps draw attention to broad shoulders. A big bust demands discretion. The first essential is a good bra. Find a professional fitter in better stores and lingerie specialists. The perfect bra should lift and cup the breasts without creating pressure on the shoulders and bumps on the back. Tight-waisted, box jackets and chunky knit tops make the bust look bigger. Find fitted jackets that skim the body. Long jackets with a single button can be very flattering. Low sweetheart necklines tailored towards the midriff create a shapely waist. V-necks and long scarves tied loosely take the eye away from the expanse of bosom but high necklines make boobs look huge. Never wear shirts with buttons that gape, necklaces or dresses that cling and pull the front hemline up. Straight shaped women can create feminine curves by wearing fitted clothes with simple necklines. Hipster trousers help give shape to the waist but only when the tummy is firm and flat. Tubby tummies can be disguised by flat-fronted trousers and skirts, avoid pleats and front zips. Low-waisted trousers make stomachs look smaller. Soft fabrics that don’t cling are the best option. Gathered waists are out, choose wrap-around tops that fall in folds across the tummy. Belts may be worn low on the hips but tight belts tend to ride up and draw attention to the tummy. Hippy girls should stay away from clingy or bias cut dresses and skirts. Narrow-legged trousers, tapered knee-length skirts and belts will emphasise the hip line. Choose plain pants without side pockets or other details. Go for A-line skirts and bootleg trousers to create a balance. Skirts or dresses with a frilled hem and slash-neck will take the eye away from the hips. Choose longer line, fitted jackets and V necks. Don’t choose box jackets or cropped tops. The same colour top and bottom can be flattering but check all angles a single colour can result in a shapeless block. Big bums will look bigger in high waisted pants and light colours. Narrow-legged trousers emphasise the derriere. Choose long jackets that fall below the bottom to just above the knee. Don’t wear jackets that end where your bum starts. Choose wide-bottomed trousers with no detail, pockets or pleats. Cut off pants (especially those that narrow to the knee) should be outlawed; they make legs look short and shapeless while distorting upper body shape.

Tall orders Food fashions come and go, some leave us wanting more but the fad for food with altitude is becoming a crashing bore. By Catherine Taylor

The great Australian diner has recovered from nouvelle cuisine - commonly known as mean cuisine – but is now confronted with the leaning Tower of Pizza when ordering a meal. Tall towers of edible concoctions may look great but they present a serious problem for the unsuspecting diner.

Romantic dinners lose their ambience while lovers struggle to keep their food on the plate. Business lunches can become an embarrassing fiasco; the sight of the general manager struggling with a pyramid of food tends to stick in the minds of junior staff members.

The next tall order to cause a problem was a rack of lamb served at a set-menu luncheon. Most people have enough sense not to serve racks of anything, they are always difficult to eat and even more so when piled on top of a bed-of-something covered in red wine jus.

Food is a fashion item, leading chefs set the standard just as leading designers guide our choice of dress. The height of food fashion is now the bouffant meal, chefs to the social set describe this as height on the plate, this passion for the fashion has resulted in food rising in phallic configurations.

Watching others tackle tall food can be quite an experience. A recent situation provided a big giggle for the restaurant staff. Several food writers were invited to a promotional dinner and served with what appeared to be a long lamb shank wrapped in pastry and balanced on layers of mashed lentils.

Our trusted reporter daintily attempted to separate the pieces. The red sauce flew everywhere and her companion was almost drowned by her attempts to remove the dark mixture from a very light suit.

All manner of things are presented on beds of this and beds of that. The garnish is piled on top of the main ingredients and often something long and skinny is stuck in the middle of the mountain. Food with altitude is not popular with diners but chefs aren’t convinced, they hold disparaging discussions about flat little meals.

The wrapping was actually brown paper difficult to tell in the dim restaurant light. The waiting staff hid their grins while the galloping gourmets tried to balance the shank and cut through the paper with a knife.

Chefs may prefer the culinary sculptures they create but they seldom eat them. Flat meals are easy to eat, the towering taste tempters are impossible. High-rise food is difficult to scale, do you knock it down, pick it up or just tuck in? Is it etiquette to take off the garnish, pull out the long things and separate the collage before cutting it? Tall orders take the comfort out of dining; the event tends to deteriorate into comedy capers. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

14

A well-known local food writer has suffered at the hands of at least two height-crazed chefs. On one occasion this elegant lady attempted to cut into a piece of crisp, young asparagus. As her knife came into contact with the lightly-blanched vegetable it touched the fish that was precariously balanced on something else. The fish took off, became airborne and twirled just below ceiling height for several moments before it landed at the feet of a fellow diner. “It was awful, it stayed in the air so long I could have jumped up and grabbed it,’’ she says.

There is little one can do to change the status quo. Food fashion is absorbed almost by osmosis; people who dine out frequently know the new trends as soon as they hit the plate. Those who rarely dine out may notice the words gravy and sauce have disappeared from the language, now only jus, essence or salsa is acceptable. Roasts are decidedly out of date; anything that actually looks like meat and three veg should not be consumed in public. Fusion cuisine is very last decade or the one before. Asian-style spoons holding salsa on a plate are now described as Vogue ‘96. Creativity is a wonderful thing but it would be nice to go back to easy-to-eat food. A dining experience shouldn’t leave you flat, reach for the heights and take it as it falls.

Excellence is a family tradition

The LeGassick name is synonymous with quality jewellery. The first LeGassick store opened in the south of Brisbane almost two decades ago. The classically elegant, individually created, handcrafted pieces soon attracted a cache of discerning buyers. The family’s reputation for exquisite jewels and attentive service established a tradition of excellence. It is the hallmark of LeGassick. The second LeGassick store opened on the Gold Coast in 2000. By then the team had expanded to include five leading diamond graders, six jewellers, two watchmakers and a team of customer service specialists. Now the second generation of the LeGassick family is actively involved in developing the brand. In April last year LeGassick launched a new flagship store in Robina Town Centre. Darryn LeGassick says the trio of stores has strengthened the family’s commitment to quality and service. “The LeGassick reputation for attention to detail and commitment to excellence continues to grow,” he says. “We source the best stones from all over the world.”

BMW Group Australia managing director Stavros Yallouridis says the X1 is the latest example of the company’s pioneering spirit. “The combination of advanced technology, fuel efficient turbo diesel engines, and the intelligent xDrive all wheel drive system gives a superior driving experience and class-leading fuel efficiency,” he says. “The X1 broadens the attraction of the very successful X family. It appeals to young urban customers with an active and varied lifestyle. It combines the powerful rugged looks of the X family with the sporty lightness of the 1 Series to give the car a youthful aesthetic to match outstanding driving dynamics,” Stavros says. The five-door X1 has excellent aerodynamic qualities with a drag coefficient of 0.32. Muscular bumpers, flared wheel arches and an upright BMW kidney grille clearly symbolise the robust nature of the X1.

The same long wheelbase as the 3 Series provides a generous space inside the versatile and luxurious cabin. A high driving position and all-round visibility gives a commanding view of the road for safe and confident motoring. Comprehensive safety features include six airbags. Front and seat mounted side airbags protect the driver and front passenger full length curtain head airbags the front and rear occupants. The sporty but safe X range includes antilock brakes, cornering brake control, dynamic stability, traction and hill descent control. The X1 has the EuroNCAP safety test maximum five star rating. The standard X1 features a long list of luxury features including automatic climate control, cruise control with brake function, rear park distance control, power windows and mirrors. Technologic additions include the BMW Professional CD/MP3 audio system with USB, AUX and Bluetooth connections. The X range features a multi function leather sport steering wheel, daytime driving lights, 17-inch light alloy wheels and a storage compartment.

Options include a panoramic glass roof, rear view camera, an interior elegance package, Nevada leather trim and sports seats. Add to this the BMW business or professional navigation systems with iDrive controller, BiXenon headlights, adaptive headlights and Harman-Kardon surround sound system. The X1 xDrive23d delivers 150kW of power and a peak torque of 400Nm. The X1 xDrive20d generates 130kW and 350Nm. The rear-wheel drive 2.0-litre turbo diesel X1 sDrive20d consumes a class-leading 5.3 litres per 100km and produces only 139 grams of CO2 per kilometre. New petrol models include an entry-level reardrive X1 sDrive18i with a 110kW four-cylinder engine or the powerful 160kW straight sixcylinder all-wheel drive X1 xDrive25i. Those holidays were something else, magic days full of sunshine and laughter. It never rained. By Catherine Taylor

The good old days Not too long ago in the land of Oz kids grew up, married their childhood sweetheart, had kids and lived happily ever after in the family home. Dad went to work and mum stayed home with the kids. The kids went to school, played in the street, rode homemade go carts and drank gallons of artificially coloured cordial. A favourite party treat was chocolate crackles made with sugar-laden breakfast cereal and lard. Mum did the housework and cooked the meals, Dad didn’t understand how to turn the washing machine on and he wouldn’t know where the iron was kept or what to do with it. Dad liked a smoke, mostly unfiltered cigarettes. Mum thought smoking wasn’t ladylike but had been known to sneak one on occasions. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

32

Dad enjoyed a beer after work and before his tea. He sometimes had a beer or two with his mates when they watched the footy or the cricket. On special occasions, mum would have a glass of wine with bubbles in it. She called it champagne and it made her a bit tiddly. This mostly happened on mum’s birthday or their wedding anniversary when dad took mum out to a restaurant for a meal. Before modern technology, rules about everything, dietary concerns and seat belts, we always knew where we were and what time it was. We didn’t have to check the clock. From Monday to Friday we knew the time by the ritual of the hour. We woke up at 7am, had a proper breakfast and walked to school.

LabeL

Australia has changed dramatically in the past 30 or 40 years, we take a nostalgic look back at the ‘70s If we were coming out of school it was either dinner time (noon) or home time (four o’clock). After school we played cricket or football in the street or someone’s yard. Sometimes we went to the creek to fish for yabbies. We knew it was nearly tea time because we could smell onion gravy from miles away. In the summer we had barbecues, the aroma of snags and chops would waft on the breeze and call us home. If we saw Dad turn the corner in the Holden we knew we were late. If he had already lit the incinerator to burn the leaves we knew there would be trouble. When mum was standing on the driveway looking out for us chances are there would be no sweets after tea. More serious punishments included no television or a list of chores. Chores included feeding the dog, washing the Holden, or weeding the yard. On Saturday, the boys took part in sports, girls went to dance or piano classes but some played tennis, hockey or netball. Mum went shopping, dad worked in the garden or the shed. Sometimes he went to a footy match or the cricket in the afternoon. Mostly he would watch sport on television with his mates at our house or theirs.

Saturday night often involved dinner parties. If the party was at our house we had to tidy our rooms and help mum. The guests never went in our rooms but we had to tidy them anyway. If the party was at someone else’s house mum would go to the hairdresser and get dressed up. Gran would come over and watch television with us until mum and dad came home. Sunday was a bit dull. We mostly had to go to church or Sunday school and visit the relies. Gran was fun when she stayed with us but it was a different kettle of fish at her house. We had to be nicely dressed and quiet. It was important to avoid touching the couple of hundred ornaments and photographs on display in the lounge and dining rooms. On Sunday afternoon we always had a special tea. Sometimes it was chicken and salad followed by tinned fruit and ice cream. It was great. After tea mum and dad would join us for a game of monopoly, cards, or tiddlywinks. We had lots of games, the relies always bought them for Christmas. Monday was back to school except in the holidays of course. Those holidays were something else, magic days full of sunshine and laughter. It never rained. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

Pasti fi co Fel l i n i wows Australia Australian Traveller Magazine selected this country’s top 100 dining experiences on the basis of food, location, and a sense of occasion. A prestigious judging panel of prominent industry figures including Matt Moran, Maggie Beer, Simon Johnson, Peter Russell Clarke, Matthew Evans, Michael Ryan, Jacques Reymond and Alla Wolf-Tasker carefully researched every region and came up with more than 900 contenders. The food experts chose the top 100 based on their own opinions and how strongly they would advise a close friend to seek out the experience. Pastificio Fellini was one of only seven Queensland gourmet experiences to make the cut. Pastificio Fellini is owned and managed by award-winning Italian restaurateurs Tony Percuoco, Carlo Percuoco, and Anna Cacace, with partners Raffaele Di Benedetto and Richard Burt. The Fellini team of passionate epicureans produce handmade artisan-style pasta in the best Italian tradition.

Australian Traveller Magazine chose Pastifico Fellini as the only Gold Coast property in the top 100 Australian dining experiences

Tony says they are honoured to be named on the prestigious Australian Traveller’s Top 100 Gourmet Experiences list. “We are overjoyed to find people love the experience as much as we love creating,” he says. “The pasta shop next door to Ristorante Fellini at Marina Mirage is the result of extensive research by food technologists mixed with the most important ingredient, our passion. “We started many years ago with one very small machine. When you put your heart and soul into something, it’s very rewarding to have such a fantastic response. Raffaele is a master pasta maker, a true artist. He makes a range of filled pasta using the freshest ingredients. Anna makes a range of delectable sauces,” he says. Tony says customers will find every type of fresh and dried pasta at Pastificio Fellini. “The selection includes fettuccine, rigatoni, spaghetti, and pasta lunga. Dried pasta products include linguette, conchiglie gigante, fettuccine, safron linguette, squid ink linguette and squid in conchiglie gigante. “While Raffaele makes the pasta, Anna creates home-style Italian sauces. She makes five classic sauces to accompany the pasta and special sauces for individual customers. Carlo mastered his pasta making skills by working closely with pasta makers in Italy. He has since been involved in a CSIRO Australia project for the pasta industry,” he says. The Gold Coast-based boutique pasta factory has experienced rapid growth in the fine food industry. The award-winning pasta shop exports nationally and internationally. Visit www.fellini.com.au for more information. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

Forget Julie and Julia, Moo Moo chefs Philip Edwards and Philip Foote are the ones to watch

Philip and Philip meet at Moo Moo Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill has thrilled Gold Coast gourmets for the past five years. Steven and Autumn Adams kept their promise to present the best of the best in Broadbeach. Moo Moo’s superior quality food and top notch service has resulted in a cache of accolades including Gold Coast Best Steak Restaurant 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, Gold Coast Restaurant of the Year, Queensland’s Best Informal Dining Restaurant and Queensland’s Best Steak Restaurant. Moo Moo Broadbeach executive chef Philip Edwards stakes a claim in this monumental success story. Now Moo Moo has opened in Brisbane and another Philip has joined the team. Steven Adams says Philip Foote – former executive chef at Siggi’s Restaurant – will head up Moo Moo Brisbane. “Philip has more than 15 years experience in all aspects of cooking. He has worked in and consulted to a number of top quality restaurants,” Steven says. “Autumn and I are extremely impressed with Philip’s talent and experience as a chef; he is also a qualified butcher and trained in the art of charcuterie. We are looking forward to a little friendly rivalry between the two Philips, diners will benefit as this talented pair plan to outdo each other. The stakes are high,” Steven says.

Moo Moo The Wine Bar + Grill at the historic Port Office building at the Stamford Plaza Hotel is set to take Brisbane by storm. The multi-million dollar refurbishment makes this the place to see and seen by day and by night. Steven says Moo Moo Brisbane is a capital part of the expansion plan. “We are now taking our beef overseas and opening a restaurant at The Westin Resort and Spa on Fiji’s Denarau Island,” he says. “We were thrilled when Starwood Hotels asked us take over the famous Steakhouse Bar & Grill restaurant; it has been operating in Fiji for the past 36 years. It’s a divine location. We are extremely proud of the Moo Moo brand and having two major hotel corporations wanting us to set up in their properties is testament to our success,” he says Chef Philip Edwards has spent some time in Fiji working on the set up, the menu and staff training. Former Moo Moo Broadbeach sous chef Katherine Browne has taken the role as head chef at Denarau Island so there won’t be a Fijian Philip.

Chelsea’s latest book Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang seems likely to break all records. Chelsea has been featured in the New York Times, W, People, and is a special guest columnist for Cosmopolitan magazine. A string of awards include a Bravo A-List Funny Award. Chelsea won ahead of fellow comics Tina Fey, Conan O’Brien, Ricky Gervais, and Amy Poehler. Chelsea was the star of Oxygen’s Girls Behaving Badly, She starred in The Chelsea Handler Show, and in the hugely popular MSN online web series In The Motherhood. Last year Chelsea received the prestigious Ally for Equality Award by the Human Rights Campaign in recognition of her outstanding efforts to better the lives of others. Celebrity trainer and former World Super Middleweight Boxing Champion Danny Musico is the leading Beverley Hills personal trainer

Fit for the red carpet Danny Musico has boxing in his genes. His grandfather Dan Marra (1935 Middleweight Champion) gave Danny his first pair of boxing gloves when he was six years of age. At the tender age of 10 Danny entered the ring. He scored a spot on the 1992 USA Olympic Boxing Team and went on to win the world Super Middleweight Boxing title. Now the leading celebrity personal trainer, Danny works with Toby Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jessica Simpson, and the entire cast of HBO’s Entourage. He channels the tools acquired as a professional boxer to motivate his clients into unbelievable shape. Danny’s motto is get it done. Danny is a natural athlete showing impressive skill in all sports. He was a star baseball player at high school and scouted by Oakland A, the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians. Danny devoted his talent to boxing. His drive and desire to excel created visions of a gold medal in the lead up to the ’92 Olympics but three months before his Olympic debut fight he was involved in a severe car accident. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

Danny and his friends were walking along a street in Hoboken New Jersey when a taxi veered off the road and ploughed down the sidewalk in pursuit of passengers that had skipped paying their fare. Danny was struck by the taxi and sandwiched between the vehicle and a steel bus stop bench. Severely injured and fighting for his life, Danny was rushed to hospital. He was bedridden for more than a year and endured nine serious leg, hip, and knee operations. Doctors told Danny he would probably never walk again and advised him to forget about sport Danny ignored the prognosis, he began an aggressive rehabilitation regime. A year later he was walking. Only two years after doctors gave him the bad news Danny returned to the ring and won the 1998 World Super Middleweight Boxing Championship. Renowned trainers Tommy Parks and Raheem Hamm helped Danny make an astonishing comeback.

Danny’s championship title come-back resulted in an impressive record of 22-2. All 22 victories were knock-outs. In 2000, Danny hung up his boxing gloves satisfied that he achieved his boxing goals. He moved to New York to pursue a career in modelling and acting. He appeared in the feature film Hell’s Kitchen, the made-for-television movie Witness to the Mob, and numerous television series including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Joan of Arcadia, and Third Watch. He has appeared in major magazines including Maxim, FHM, and various men’s health publications. Danny’s career success now includes becoming the leading Beverly Hills celebrity personal trainer and running a huge gym. The gym features state-ofthe-art equipment, a full size track, and a basketball court. Membership is restricted to only 20 top celebrities and there is a waiting list.

Positive action in style Lorna Jane celebrates 20 years of success by launching this season’s range under the banner For Active Women By Active Women. This brilliant Australian company snubbed the use of professional models in favour of profiling everyday women who wear the brand and embrace the active living philosophy. Lorna Jane founder Lorna Jane Clarkson, her employees and customers, feature in the label’s new campaign shots and stores across Australia. The For Active Women by Active Women campaign presents a series of portraits of Lorna Jane women and provides a glimpse of how these women choose to live actively. Images show key looks in action to depict function, construction, and style.

Lorna Jane says celebrating the women behind the brand helps get Australian women moving. “The Lorna Jane brand comes to life through a nation of women who inspire us every day,” she says. “These women made our history, define our presence and are now inventing our future. “The spirit and heartbeat of the campaign celebrates each woman’s way of life, age and background. It empowers women to live positively, no matter what their active lifestyle,’’ Lorna Jane says. Label Kitchen gods and goddesses can use their powers to cast a spell and win a heart or breathe new life into a tired relationship. Some foods are accredited aphrodisiacs; these include oysters, asparagus, bananas, caviar and chocolate among others. Oysters can change sex repeatedly; this leads to claims that this slippery little sucker improves the masculine and feminine side of love. The lush creamy flavour of bananas is very sensual and the phallic fruit contains bromelain, an enzyme reputed to enhance male performance. Caviar has a high zinc content, zinc stimulates testosterone production and helps maintain male sexual functions. Chocolate contains a relaxant, a stimulant, and the desire for physical contact. Ginseng is reputed to stimulate the need to be loved. Figs are simply orgasmic, the flavour is incomparable. This unusual fruit was celebrated by ancient Greeks in a frenzied copulation ritual. Radish was the choice of hot-totrot Egyptian pharaohs, while musky truffles exited Europeans.

Sexy

Fragrant foodstuffs – almonds, vanilla, other herbs and spices – act as a pheromone and heighten emotions. Champagne is the drink of love; moderate quantities lower inhibitions and create a warm glow. History shows a number of bizarre foods and love potions, but most of these are now illegal, some are deadly. Set the scene for seduction with a beautiful setting. Dining is not all about food, the lighting, music, the room and the table setting all come in to play. Be aware of the guest’s food fads and fancies, work around preferences but remember there is girl food and boy food. Women generally prefer lighter meals and enjoy cold entrées and main courses, men usually prefer hot food and plenty of it. Tops chefs agree people eat with their eyes, presentation is everything. Novice cooks are nervous, choose simple dishes that are not timed to the last second and prepare everything in advance. A trial run with a good friend is a great idea. Cheating with easy to prepare or prepared food is permitted, all is fair in love. Extend the invitation, be specific about time and prepare the scene.

Seduction starts in the kitchen, moves to the table and beyond

Create an inviting environment that is tidy and clean. Don’t forget the bathroom and bedroom. Set the table, but don’t make it too complicated, an array of glasses and cutlery can be intimidating. Tall flower arrangements create a barrier, keep decorations small and low. Avoid heavily scented flowers; the smell will spoil the aroma of the food. Use tall candles, low candles cast an unflattering light. Choose soft music, dim the lights but create enough glow to give a soft ambience and visibility. Use lightly scented oils and candles based on natural products, check out the labels on good quality, long burning candles and votives. Cheap candles can create a pungent odour and black smoke. Plan the menu, shop and do most of the food preparation the day before. Keep the menu simple; remember some seafood dishes require finger bowls and dishes for shells. Meat dishes are best kept to slow cooking varieties; only experienced cooks can cook a perfect blue steak and remain calm. Seafood and fish are best bought on the day. Choose cheese carefully and avoid the smelly varieties. Quality is everything; find a place to shop for fresh food and delicacies. Find recipes for everything on the web; choose those with the shortest list of ingredients and the least complicated method of cooking.

Dishes that require little more than assembly are perfect. Choose wine to match each course, start with champagne or sparkling wine, match spicy dishes with sweeter wine or beer, heighten the flavours of fish with a good chardonnay or pinot gris and serve beef with a great Australian red. The art of entertainment is the joy of giving, everyone appreciates a little TLC. Place a bowl or plate of bread on the table. Slice a fresh baguette up to an hour before serving time and cover in cling film or choose beautiful fresh baked rolls from a good supplier. Serve small bowls (ramekins) of butter, score swirls with a fork and top with a leaf of parsley. Add to the occasion with a tiny dish of extra light olive oil for dipping or smashed up avocado. Don’t forget the side plates and bread knives. Entrées could be six oysters each. Serve on the half shell, flavour with a squeeze of fresh lime juice and top with caviar. Pumpkin soup is heart warming, make it from scratch or buy a tin of good quality soup, stir in half a teaspoon of Chinese five spices, top with King Island cream and a little fresh chopped parsley. Fresh asparagus is a great starter, buy tiny thin fresh veg, blanche in lightly salted boiling water until cooked but crisp, arrange on the plate and top with homemade or bought hollandaise sauce.

Main courses could include Thai chicken curry with coriander, a hearty beef bourguignon, chicken Kiev, or a delicious piece of Atlantic salmon. Find recipes on the internet or ask a local restaurant to prepare the main course and pick it up in time to transfer to a covered oven dish and pretend it was homemade. Atlantic salmon takes moments to cook, sear both sides, wrap in foil, place in the oven on low heat and serve with a side dish of fresh salad and a small bowl of tartare sauce. Dessert may be hot apple pie with cream or ice cream. Even a frozen apple pie will seduce the senses as the aroma wafts from the oven. Sprinkle the top with a little cinnamon for ultimate impact. Fresh berries, cherries, or strawberries are a delight when served with a small bowl of melted chocolate. Serve washed fruit on a small plate with a dollop of King Island cream and a sprig of coriander. Frozen grapes are gorgeous with cream, chocolate or melted jam as a dipping sauce. Make a cheese platter a work of art with small slices of three complimentary flavours, fruit and biscuits. Good coffee is essential. The best way to create a great meal is to look at the menus of top restaurants, check out recipes on line, and make it look good. Remember to find something sexy to wear to bed, an attractive early morning outfit (slinky dressing gowns are good) and something for breakfast. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

Looking good takes time and money but most women and a high percentage of men believe it’s all worthwhile

High maintenance Celebrities set the standard for looking good all day every day and long into the night. Few are born tanned, toned and glossy but they achieve the look with hard work and lots of dosh. Step into celebrity shoes for a moment and take a look at what is involved in the creation of perfection. Diet and exercise is only part of the story, there’s more to looking good than meets the eye. Diet experts say we are what we eat. Pies and chips as a staple diet eventually result in pasty faces and doughy bodies. Lean meals lead to lean looks. The big buzz is fresh, start the day with fruit and little low fat carb, make lunch lean meat, fish or salad and keep dinner to the minimum with portion control. The balance should be 70 per cent low fat veg and 30 per cent lean meat, fish or other protein sources. Protein – the essential body repair nutrient – can be sourced from eggs, nuts, and some vegetables. Mushrooms, beans and broccoli are high in protein but vegetarians and vegans need nutritional knowledge to remain in peak condition. Food fads come and go but basic nutrition is here to stay. Look at the stars that shine with well being. Enviable bodies – think Madonna or Liz Hurley – are not achieved by pigging out on pizza. Diet discipline is a way of life not a short term fix. Take out the rubbish. Alcohol and empty kilojoules such as batter or bread crumbs on meat or fish, pastry and refined sugar fit into this category. Exercise is another essential, move more and eat less is the celeb rule. Truly devoted beautiful people spend at least an hour a day on serious work outs. Join the beautiful people by starting the day early, people with jobs, kids and a home to run will need all the energy they can generate to make this routine work. Label followed a local glossy girl to discover the demands of looking sensational. This daily discipline requires devotion and dollars. A total of 53.5 days a year (that’s almost two months out of every 12) is spent on basic care. Add to this more intense treatments. These are likely to include dental treatment, health checks, surgical or nonsurgical procedures and spa retreats. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

“Better a new face getting out of an old car than an old face getting out of new car,” Joan Rivers

Calculate the time each treatment takes and the length of recovery, it adds up to a sizable investment in time. Cost is another matter, the price of hair care, skin care and cosmetic products vary enormously but even budget conscious beauties are looking at an investment of several thousand dollars each year. High end high maintenance can cost more than a small property but property can be rented – good looks can’t.
