The series begins with the return of Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) from a mysterious stay at a boarding school in Connecticut. Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) is Serena’s long-time friend and occasional rival. Blair is the queen bee of the school social scene. The story follows the bad boy of the Upper East Side Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick), Chuck’s best friend Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford), and other characters of the turbulent Manhattan scene including Nate’s friend and Serena’s on-again, off-again ex Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), Dan’s best friend Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr) and Dan’s ambitious sister Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen).

Lively Audiences love this Gossip Girl

Blake Lively plays Serena van der Woodsen in the teen drama series Gossip Girl. The television series created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage is based on a book series by Cecily von Ziegesar. The show revolves around the lives of privileged young adults on Manhattan’s Upper East Side in New York City and is narrated by unseen blogger Gossip Girl voiced by Kristen Bell. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

Blake is widely recognised as the star of the show but claims there is no rivalry between cast members. The 23-year-old LA born actress began her career as an extra in the ‘98 film Sandman directed by her father Ernie Lively and starred in several movies including Accepted and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants before scoring the role of Serena. Blake grew up in the entertainment industry. Her mother – a former model – and her father taught acting classes and Blake (the youngest of five children) went along. She says the classes helped her learn the drills of acting and gain confidence. Blake attended 13 schools including Burbank High School where she joined the school show choir and became a cheerleader. She planned to attend Stanford University but her older brother Eric talked her in to an acting career with a little help from his agent.

LabeL

Blake attended a few auditions and soon won the role of Bridget in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Her performance earned her a nomination for a Teen Choice Award. With a box office revenue of $42 million, the film was Blake’s biggest commercially success until it was out out-grossed by the sequel. In 2006, Blake co-starred with Justin Long in Accepted and had a minor role in the horror film Simon Says. Accepted wasn’t well received by critics but Blake’s performance earned her an award from Hollywood Life. In 2007, Blake played Anabelle (a bulimic girl with aspirations to be a beauty queen) in Elvis and Anabelle. Blake says she shed serious weight for the role. “Beauty queens are very toned, so I lost weight, but I got toned. It was the healthiest I’ve

ever been,” she says. A diet of chicken breasts with asparagus and broccoli proved difficult as Blake says food is the love of her life. Since September 2007 Blake has captivated Gossip Girl audiences and appeared in several feature films including The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, the romantic comedy New York, I Love You and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. Blake played the younger version of Pippa Lee in her most acclaimed role to date. In October 2009 Lively began filming scenes for her role as Krista Coughlin in the The Town and in January this year Blake won the role of Carol Ferris in the up-coming 2011 superhero film Green Lantern. Gossip Girl is now showing on FOX8 each Tuesday 8.30pm.

choice in summer fashion

LabeL Start by drinking plenty of water. Water hydrates the skin and helps reduce the appetite. Drink a big glass of water before and during meals, it takes the edge off hunger. Few people have a perfectly balanced diet, add essential nutrients with a daily vitamin and mineral supplement.

A light golden tan helps skin look more toned but the only safe tan is a sunless tan. Try one of the new sunless tanning products to use at home or visit a tanning salon. At home products range from gentle daily moisturises that gradually develop to a sun kissed glow to darker instant tanning products that take a few hours to develop a deeper bronze. Unwanted hair is always unsightly and all is revealed in summer fashions and swimwear. Opt for at home hair removal using shavers, creams, gels or mousse but the best results come from salon treatments. Choose waxing or permanent hair removal from an experienced qualified professional.

Hands and feet are on show in summer. Use a moisturising treatment frequently to keep hands and feet looking smooth. A professional manicure and pedicure is a must.

Looking good Tops tips for summer beauty

Summer hair should be soft and fresh. Visit a salon and invest in a great cut, flattering colour, and treatments. Marcus Edwards is now the headline at the former Artists United but Jacky King is still providing top quality services at the Marina Mirage salon. Regular clients can relax and enjoy superior hair care and styling, a range of treatments and beauty services. New clients receive a complimentary style cut and blow wave with any full colour service until February 28. Phone: 07 55916122

Good looks start with good grooming. A balanced diet and regular exercise keeps bodies in shape. A daily skin care regime and sun protection is essential. Hair care starts with a great cut, easy to wear styling and top quality products. Only the glossy girls keep all the rules but we can all make the most of what we have with a little expert help.

Skin care and sun protection are essential. Never go outside without a sunblock and remember to reapply regularly Follow a morning and night routine that includes cleansing, toning, moisturising, and treatments for trouble spots. Trouble spots may include wrinkles, breakouts, or dark circles under the eyes. Consult a professional, take their advice, and investigate all the treatment options. The latest skin care and make up ranges combine the benefits of cosmetics and science to give brilliant results. Major improvements can be achieved with non-surgical and surgical treatments. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

Here are the seven questions women most frequently ask about men and the answers.

Q1.

Why do men continually offer solutions and give advice?

A1. Women often bemoan the fact that the men in their lives take a constant problem-solving approach to everything. They give advice on how to handle situations in life whether women ask for it or not! The reality is that women usually want to be heard, not fixed! Why do men keep flicking through the Q2. channels with the remote control? A2. Remote control: noun, female: A device for changing one TV channel to another. Remote control: noun, male: A device for scanning through 55 channels every 2.5 minutes. Men don’t want to know what’s on television; they want to know what else is on television. Apparently, this behaviour has origins with the Neanderthals who relaxed at the end of a day’s hunting by fire gazing. Channel-surfing is a modern male relaxant!

Q3. Why won’t men ask for directions?

A3. Men don’t get lost, they simply discover alternative destinations. To admit he is lost is to admit he has failed at his number one skill. Men developed their sense of direction over millions of years. Next time you drive past the same spot three times, don’t blame him, blame history.

Q4. Why do men leave the toilet seat up?

A4. Men dream of a world where all toilets seats are left up. Sadly though, this lack of bathroom etiquette is a woman’s nightmare.

Why do men make such a fuss about Q5. going shopping? A5. Men equate shopping with game hunting. In prehistoric times, they would zero in on a target, make a quick kill and go home. That’s exactly how men like to shop. This explains why they can buy Christmas presents for the entire family in less than 40 minutes. Women who don’t want to fall prey to the male shopping style should leave him at home with the remote control.

Relationships have their ups and downs, hundreds of gurus offer advice but only Allan and Barbara Pease give us the facts do men have such disgusting Q6. Why personal habits? A6. Flatulence, burping, scratching and body odour are more about male bonding and entertainment than anything else. Clearly, it’s a guy thing.

Q7. Why do men love gross jokes? A7. Males remember jokes. Some men can tell jokes they heard in fourth grade but don’t know the date of their wedding anniversary. Laughter is also a predominantly male way of dealing with emotional pain. The harder it is for a man to talk about an emotional event, the harder he will laugh when told a joke about it. For women, male humour is no laughing matter.

Allan and Barbara Pease are Australia’s most successful publishing team with 15 best selling books sold in more than 100 countries and millions of television viewers. This exceptional couple use their skills and experience to inspire others and boost personal growth. Their best sellers include Why Men Don’t Listen and Women Can’t Read Maps, The Definitive Book of Body Language, Why Men Don’t Have A Clue and Women Always Need More Shoes, Easy Peasey: People Skills For Life and Questions are the Answers. Their latest offering is Why Men Want Sex and Women Need Love, it is a must have book for men and women who want to make the most of their relationships. Times have changed; social pressures and politically correct pretence make unrealistic demands on relationships. Once families stayed together for generations, now most of us are distanced from our families and many live in single person households. Allan and Barbara explain why men and women don’t see things the same way and how to work around the differences to achieve a mutually satisfying relationship. Barbara says women become frustrated when men don’t communicate. “Women love to talk but men are not great communicators. For males, speech and language are not critical brain skills. When men get together to watch a football game, that’s exactly what they do, watch the game. They don’t talk. When women get together they chat away, regardless of whether they are watching a film, shopping, eating, or playing sport. “Men evolved as hunters, not communicators. When they were hunting in pre-historic times, they communicated with lots of non-verbal signals and would often sit for hours silently watching for their prey. The only time men come close to communicating openly is when the division of communication in the tightly compartmentalised brain is broken down, usually by copious quantities of alcohol. “Women are great communicators. They enjoy it, and do lots of it. With specific areas allocated to communication in the brain, the other areas of the brain are freed up; this enables her to do lots of different tasks at once while talking. Women get rid of problems by talking about them. Her objective is to discharge the problems, not to find conclusions or solutions. This can create friction, when he is silent, she feels unloved. “Men talk mainly inside their heads. This self-talk is misconstrued by women, she assumes he is bored. He may be solving his problems as he gazes out of the window, or watches mindless sport on TV. He may become angry when his down time of self-talk is interrupted, as a man can only do one thing at a time. “His mono-tracking brain doesn’t allow him to speak, watch TV, silent talk in his mind, and eat at the same time. This is why women often feel their male partner is sulky, distant or neglectful. Men can go out and have a drink with the boys, and that’s exactly what it is. When he goes out to dinner with a woman, she gets worried if he isn’t speaking the whole time. “Women need to accept that men’s brains really do behave very differently from their own, and talking is not something they have evolved to do. Men need to accept that women need to talk to relieve stress, solve problems and plan for the coming day. Men need to remember that women are not searching for solutions from them; hence they can just sit back, relax, and let the woman speak her words.” In Why Men Don’t Have A Clue & Women Always Need More Shoes, Allan and Barbara expose what generations of females regard as boys’ bad habits. Allan and Barbara compiled a list of the top seven things men do that drive women insane. The list was compiled from interviews, information and research from all over the world. It seems bad habits know no geographical, cultural or ethnic boundaries. Allan says there are also two categories of annoying male behaviour: those learned from childhood and those linked to the wiring of the male brain. “Bathrooms, shopping malls and highways all become unlikely battlegrounds as men become defensive and women go on the warpath. Allan and Barbara are at their best when they provide readers with practical tips and solutions on how to manoeuvre through the minefield of modern romance. Why Men Want Sex and Women Need Love is a handbook for singles, people living together, married couples and anyone who wants to experience a realistic and loving relationship.

Dr Craig Layt takes an educational approach to breast augmentation

Some women believe their breasts are too small or unevenly sized. Some are self-conscious about their lack of curves. Highly qualified plastic surgeon Dr Craig Layt has years of experience in breast enhancement. Dr Layt says breast shape can change after pregnancy, weight loss or with the passing of the years. “Help is available and education is the key,” he says. “Every step of the procedure is explained during consultation but experience shows most patients forget some of the information. “Breast enlargement is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures so I decided to help patients learn more about the procedure by developing an informative DVD. The breast enlargement DVD is based on a consultation.

“Consultation is an important decision making process in any elective procedure. The DVD helps women understand the process. They can easily relate to the visual images and spoken explanation. They can watch the DVD several times and develop a clear understanding of the procedure,” Dr Layt says. He says written information from the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and the clinic are provided. “The written information is useful but the DVD allows patients to go through the experience, make notes, and prepare questions before their consultation,” he says. “The DVD is not designed to replace a surgery consultation. It is designed to inform patients about the procedure and make decisions. The DVD gives patients the information they need to ask questions on breast enlargement.

“During consultation we establish the size and shape of the breast implants. We discuss the options of positioning the implant in front or behind the chest muscle, the incision used to place the implant, and the type of implant used. “The size after breast augmentation is a result of breast tissue and the implant. The same implant size gives different results in different women. It is important to assess each patient individually. “Proceeding with breast augmentation is a personal decision. Each patient has their own reasons for wanting the surgery. All patients should be provided with as much information as possible,” Dr Layt says. Visit www.drlayt.com or contact Dr Layt’s Benowa clinic for a copy of the breast augmentation DVD. www.labelmagazine.com.au -

Elizabeth Hurley Beach suits fashion conscious women who want to bring an element of luxury and excitement into their summer wardrobe. The collection includes bikinis, tankinis and one-piece swimsuits as well as tops, shirts, shorts, pants, jackets, and dresses. The cotton and silk tunics, plus exquisite beaded kaftans and sarongs complete the picture with beach bags, towels, and beach hats.

The eye-catching array of swimwear and cover-ups features solid colours and glamorous prints. Elizabeth has introduced fabulous new prints to the current collection. Try sexy cut-outs and bikinis in fire engine red, aqua, navy, chocolate, hot pink, black, white, cool metallics and nautical stripes. Elizabeth’s signature leopard print adds glamour. Hand blocked sarongs, embroidered kaftans and tunics look effortlessly luxurious and contrast well with classic linen shirts, shorts, and capri pants. Elizabeth is one the world’s most recognised faces; she has channelled her modelling experiences into fashion design. She is involved in every aspect of the collection, from the creative concept to development and production.

Elizabeth says she has always been obsessed with summer clothes. “This is probably because I grew up in a rainy country where I was brought up never to leave the house without a cardigan and umbrella,” she says. “I used to dream of glamorous, sunny places like St. Tropez and St. Barth’s and in my dreams I was wearing clothes remarkably similar to these.” This year Elizabeth enjoyed the successful openings of her Elizabeth Hurley Beach huts in Spain, Britain, Ireland, and Germany. The collection is available at top boutiques, resorts, and department stores worldwide. Visit www.elizabethhurley.com to find stockists and shop online. Diamonds are Forever

O

ne visit to the CTJ Jewellery store on Upton Street in Bundall and you’ll wonder why you ever went anywhere else.

Whilst Greg Ward, CTJ owner, recognizes the benefits of selling diamonds over the internet, the ability to get up close and personal with the loose diamonds is far more appealing to most people. The chain stores in their high street locations have their over-inflated prices, which make purchasing a diamond nothing more than a pipedream for most. So he says forget the internet and forget the chain stores, CTJ have the best of both worlds. At CTJ, Greg has worked tirelessly, travelling to see his international partners in Hong Kong, India and Belgium and purchasing world-class diamonds that he then sells directly to the public. This process has many cost savings for the public, which CTJ delivers straight back to the buyers. CTJ are also very stringent in ensuring that all diamonds are diamond laboratory certified with world recognized organizations such as GIA, IGI and HRD. The Diamond Room at CTJ is an experience unto itself. If you’re serious about buying a diamond, you are able to view the diamonds like only international diamonds dealers can, loose on the felt, to view in all their glory…Now that’s some serious WOW factor! The CTJ staff will talk you through the differences when purchasing a diamond and they will do this in a relaxed environment, no pressure, just information. CTJ also have an on-site workshop where they can custom design and build whatever your heart desires and your imagination is the limit. So basically, when you buy diamonds or that special diamond ring from CTJ, you receive internet prices, professional service and an on-site workshop all at your finger tips. All this with the worldwide assurance of the product that you are buying. I think it’s true what they say at CTJ, Diamonds are forever!

Vintage advantag Vintage advantag

Vintage is the buzz – the word defines the trend towards exclusivity and personal style. Fashionistas source vintage pieces in superb clothing and accessories. Vintage shoppers aren’t satisfied with Op Shop basics, price is not the issue, it’s all about the look. The vintage vixen will hunt through charity shops, pre-loved clothing stores, specialist boutiques and online sales rooms to find that once in a lifetime piece. These scene stealers have an eye for detail and a thirst for statement pieces. According to the Oxford Dictionary, vintage is representative of the best and most typical of an era. The look is classic, well constructed pieces with a definitive edge. It may be old Hollywood, 1920s flapper, the preppy prude look of the 1950s or something utterly mad from the ‘80s. Nostalgia breaks in as the past becomes a very safe place. The global recession, a series of ecological disasters and wars cause even the youngest among us to look back at the imagined Utopia of the good old days. Few actually remember these fondly recalled times in history but the image is forever captured by silver screen icons. Think Marilyn Monroe in the white halter neck dress, Sophia Loren swishing through film festivals in rustling silks and satins, and even Annie Hall in her man tailored suits and ties. Fashion skips stylishly to channel nostalgic notions into our wardrobes. Buy it or borrow it, raid nana’s attic or mum’s souvenir boxes for a 1960s shift dress and ‘70s flares. Nanas camel coat and pure silk animal print scarves are at the top of my must borrow for winter list. The trick is in the combination. An entire vintage outfit can look like fancy dress but a gorgeous silver belt, a crocodile bag or a Mary Quant micro mini can spark up current trends to create signature style. Vintage is for everyone but it must be worn with panache. Girls in their 20s and 30s can wear ’70s and ‘80s gear, but women aged 40 plus must be careful to combine the old with the new. Spark it up but don’t sport the entire yesteryear look, it can look a little tired. Go for accessories or something totally extravagant and outrageous.

Kaia Torv waves the flag for social responsibility “Our own Gold Coast kids with the Jodie O’Shea children, visiting the orphanage was the highlight of our holiday,” Kaia Torv

Kaia Torv is one of the Gold Coast’s good girls but she won’t mention that. Kaia usually shows up in the social pages looking glamorous at impressive events but behind the glitz is a woman of substance. A busy life as the wife of Hot Tomato boss Hans Torv doesn’t stop Kaia from having a good time and helping others in the process. Kaia recently returned from the Variety Bash; an annual rally to raise funds for the children’s charity. Variety event coordinator Erin Groeneveld says the Gold Coast girls helped raise $1.2 million for the charity and added a very bright splash of colour to the event. Kaia says it was a tonne of fun. “Our team of four took an old pink Chevy from Southport to Port Douglas. We were way out of our comfort zone,” she says. “The dust, the flies, the ants and occasional breakdowns – the car not us – were part of the fun. It was a bit of a bucket list thing for me to do. Some people do it every year but this was my first time.

It was the twenty first anniversary of the first Variety Bash so we followed the original route, there are some very rough roads out there,” Kaia says.

“I expected a visit to an orphanage to make me feel sad but I felt joyous, there’s great pleasure in giving. Quite a few people do this.

Sydney-born Kaia is used to travelling and now makes it a point to go out of her way when holidaying abroad. “On a recent trip to Bali we visited the Jodie O’Shea Orphanage,” she says.

I know Rebecca Frizelle does, she recently went to South Africa and visited an orphanage. We don’t have to travel to give back to society, it can be as simple as checking how long it is since a neighbour had a visitor. There are people in need everywhere, they may not need material things just a smile or a kind word,” Kaia says.

“Jodie died in the 2002 Bali bombing; the orphanage is named in her honour. It houses about 48 children and the small team of people who run it provide a healthy and loving environment. We took things they needed and spent some time with the kids. “It’s easy to research an orphanage in another country before going on holiday and it doesn’t take much effort to take a day to visit. The first time is the hardest but it soon becomes a highlight of the trip. We went shopping and made up packets with towels, toothbrushes, colouring pencils and a few other things for each child in the Jodie O’Shea Orphanage but others need even more basic items.

Kaia and her friends combine fun and experiences with practical help for people in need. She says there are lots of plans for more trips. “Next year a group of about 50 Gold Coast people are heading to Las Vegas. Several members of the group will be celebrating milestone birthdays. We may not all travel together but we have set a date to meet in Las Vegas and we have some wild plans to add to the festivities,” Kaia says. Kaia is sworn to secrecy about the party plans but we did hear a Neil Diamond impersonator is involved in one of them.

Wine and wonder New Zealand’s Craggy Range Wine is the culmination of a dream. Terry Peabody and his family searched for ten years to find the place and the people that could fulfil the dream of making some of the best wine in the world. They succeeded. Craggy Range Wine comes from several vineyards. The spectacular Giants Winery at the base of Te Mata Peak houses three cellars. The State Highway 50 Winery in the famous Gimblett Gravels integrates operations from grape to bottle. Respect for tradition is imperative; it is the heart and soul of great wine. But old-fashioned ways can sometimes leave too much to chance. Quality demands the most modern methods, technology, and understanding. Craggy Range combines unique and sometimes contradictory traditions and innovation, old and new, art and technology. The result is outstanding.

Property and prosperity

A home or investment property is usually the largest investment people make. Most people engage professional lawyers to ensure their purchase is secure but a growing band of home buyers are opting for do-it-yourself legals. Experts advise caution as property purchases are seldom straight forward. Respected Gold Coast lawyer Simon Bennett says the legalities of buying or selling property is often considered a routine exercise. “In reality it is anything but routine,” he says. “Simply processing data or managing it yourself is not the best way to handle what can become one of the trickiest sectors of law.

LabeL Impress family and friends with delectable summer dishes that are easy to assemble and require little or no cooking. Seafood, salads, and fruit are the easiest options. Add some prepared antipasti delicacies, some wonderful wine and good coffee. Presentation is everything; colourful fresh food has eye appeal.

Start with a glass of champagne, serve crusty bread in a bowl, and arrange sliced meat from the deli on a platter with sundried tomatoes, olives, and artichoke hearts.

On the table Entertaining is easy with a few tips and tricks

The humble mushroom in all its different guises makes the perfect base for flavourpacked snacks or meals in minutes. Spice up button mushrooms with cardamom, nutmeg, cumin, coriander, and turmeric. Stir-fry the mushrooms until fragrant and lightly browned, sprinkle with chopped roasted peanuts and garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Add a side dish of steamed rice and natural yoghurt for a heartier meal. Stir-fry thickly sliced cup mushrooms with king prawns, oyster sauce, choy sum leaves and tender asparagus spears, serve with freshly cooked noodles for a super starter or light lunch. If cooking is a chore, impress guests with marinated button mushrooms in red wine vinegar, mustard and olive oil dressing. Toss with kalamata olives, semi-dried tomatoes, char-grilled eggplant and fresh basil leaves for a mouth-watering salad.

Gold Coast based coffee company Supreme Roasters won three bronze and a silver medal at the National Golden Bean Awards in Port Macquarie recently. Introduces IS 350

The launch of Lexus IS 350 coincides with new styling and features across the IS sedan range. Innovations include an aggressive frontal treatment, a new wheel and tyre package with safety and comfort refinements.

Lexus Australia boosted IS line performance credentials with the introduction of the powerful new IS 350 sedan.

Slotting between IS 250 and IS F variants, IS 350 sedan will deliver 233kW of power and 378Nm of torque. IS 350 also debuts the Lexus F Sport logo. F Sport models feature unique sports-tuned suspension, wheels, spoilers, outstanding interior and exterior features plus F Sport badging. Lexus chief executive Tony Cramb says the IS 350 is a strong addition to the Lexus range. “It brings increased competition to the luxury vehicle market,” he says. “IS is one of the most popular in the Lexus range of vehicles, IS 350 adds to the appeal. “Lexus IS 350 is an outstanding vehicle, it’s ahead of competitors on power, performance, specification, price, and value. Much like the first Lexus (the LS 400) IS 350 will result in customers questioning why they’d pay $20,000 to $30,000 more for a similarly powered competitors vehicle,” Tony says. The Lexus IS 350 is a power train with a list of standard features and segment-leading price. See it on line at www.lexusofsouthport.com.au or call in to Lexus of Southport at 161 Ferry Road and check out all the features.
