ORE schools in KwaDukuza have closed as a result of teachers or pupils being infected by Covid-19.

Stanger Manor Primary and Stanger Primary as well as Nonhlevu Secondary Schools are the latest in a string of schools which have been forced to close over the past month as a result of Covid-19 cases.

In light of the rapid spread of the virus, schools around KwaDukuza arranged demonstrations imploring the Department of Education to close schools however, the pleas have not been heard.

Last week, the department announced that schools will remain open - following a call from the teachers’ unions to close schools - until Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga concludes consulting with various stakeholders to find a way forward.

However, the unions appear to be losing patience amid confusion over when she will meet cabinet to discuss the issue and make an announcement, News24 reported on Monday.

A

N upward trend in Covid-19 infections within the iLembe District is expected to continue in the coming weeks.

This is according to a detailed situational report for the iLembe District dated July 13.

The report maps out the number and rate of infections, distribution of cases over time and by sub-districts KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Maphumulo and Ndwedwe, hotspots, outcomes and deaths and healthcare worker cases.

According to the report, which the Weekly is in possession of, cases are on an upward trajectory, now averaging 50.7 new cases per day for the week.

“This trend is expected to continue in the coming weeks. Ten deaths were reported since the last report, while some occurred in the week before, they were only reported this week as Covid-19 results were delayed,” the report states.

“Our first case from an old-age home was reported this week. Mitigation strategies to prevent cases and reduce spread in these homes need to be emphasized.

Hotspots include Stanger, Mandeni, Groutville and Thembeni areas,” the report reads. The report states that case identification has increased significantly, with the average daily cases reported now 50.7 for the week.

“This is an increase from 22.3 from the previous week. These increases can be expected to continue in the coming weeks with the health system increasingly coming under pressure. Mandela Day forges ahead despite Covid-19 JYOTHI LALDAS

ESPITE being trapped in the throes of a pandemic, the people of KwaDukuza did not allow Mandela Day to fall by the wayside.

The KwaDukuza community found ways to celebrate the day despite the various restrictions imposed by Covid-19.

Staying fit during a pandemic JYOTHI LALDAS

“T

HE most dangerous opponents of a martial artist are fear, anger, confusion, doubt and despair. We defeat these inner enemies every time we train.

These are the words of Master Sabumnim Timur Kurmanov of Budo Martial Arts Centre in KwaDukuza.

According to Kurmanov exercise is a proven way to beat pandemic stress and prevent you from being sick.

“So keep moving and encourage your friends and family to do the same.”

He advised that exercise is a great antidote to anxiety.

“During lockdown I train in my living room everyday. So move the sofa against the wall and keep moving.

During the last few months I remained at home, as per the national lockdown, so most of my work was continuing remotely for that time.

We have meetings online to advise on various topics and projects, presenting webinars, conducting coaching, writing, reading, training, meditating, teaching and always learning.

“Often I am asked what is the most effective and balanced routine to have.

Well, every person and every life is different, so the ‘one size fits all’ approach doesn’t work. In my opinion, there is a basic common guideline, which is to harmoniously balance physical (body) cognitive (mind) and emotional (spirit) activities.”

Kumanov shared his daily routine with the Weekly.

“When at home I do the following ‘threes’ everyday Three martial arts training sessions (MMA and qigong techniques, endurance and conditioning, strength and flexibility), three mental practices (meditation, reading, listening), three healthy and tasty meals, which I prepare fresh each time with care, three work objectives, important tasks or projects often requiring multiple subactivities each, three rituals (nature, sutras or chanting, music) and three restful times (contemplation, relaxation, night sleep).”

He said the amount of time dedicated to each varies depending on the circumstances.

“So it could be just a few minutes or many hours, whilst some might be combined together, for example training and nature, but all the above activities usually take place in my days at home.”

Kurmanov suggested mindfully observing ones days and making sure one includes all the fundamental stimuli ones body, mind and spirit needs, to be as healthy, effective, productive and serene as possible.

“Strength comes from within.

Health comes from within.

If you take care of yourself, eat well, exercise, you will not become ill.”

Kurmanov also recommends some

exercises to keep fit at home.

“Beside your cardio and stretching you can do the following: • Do breathing exercises everyday to build your lungs and immune system.

• Strong legs - strong heart.

Mabu - horse stance one of the fundamental martial arts exercises. Mabu practice strengthens the legs, hips and lower back, whilst also improving flexibility and balance. Furthermore, it strengthens mind and spirit, focus and willpower, you will understand when you practice it.

Simply stay in mabu - bend your knees, thighs parallel to the ground, feet facing forward and back straight - for as long as you can and time yourself.

The next day (or later on the same day, if you feel like doing it more frequently) try to match the prior time plus at least three seconds adding three seconds, or more, each day.

Push-ups can be done in three possible versions: fundamental, intermediate, advanced.

• Fundamental - normal push-ups, feet on the ground or knees, if on the feet you cannot do at least ten.

• Intermediate - elevated push-ups, feet on a chair or table or wall.

• Advanced - handstand push-ups, feet against a wall or balancing, once you can do so safely.

It needs only a few minutes and version one is suitable for anyone, novices and experts alike.

Simply execute as many pushups as you can - body straight and full range of motion - without stopping.

The next day (or later on the same day, if you feel like doing it more frequently) try to match the prior number plus at least one more push-up adding one push-up, or more, each day.”

To conclude Kurmanov advises: “Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, safeguard your inner space to move from fear and worry to peace and spaciousness.”

THE organisers of the Totalsports Women’s Race have announced that the events, that were scheduled to take place in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban on National Women’s Day Sunday, August 9, have been cancelled.

The event organisers said in a statement: “Adhering to the directive from Athletics South Africa (ASA) in response to the current state of the Covid-19 pandemic, a decision has been made to cancel the 2020 edition of the Totalsports Women’s Race.

“Entries for the events will therefore not open this year. We are thankful to each and every runner, our sponsors and suppliers for their unwavering support. We look forward to welcoming back runners to South Africa’s largest Women’s Day Celebration in 2021.”
