Reinventing the El Chorrillo Waterfront
Project Information:
University of Pennsylvania & Isthmus University
Place: El Chorrillo + San Felipe, Panama City, Panama | 2024
Type: Recreational + Cultural Hub, Mangrove Restoration
Collaboration with a group working on larger urban design strategies to re-envision the El Chorrillo neighborhood to provide improved infrastructure and flood control investment, safety, and high-quality community spaces. Her specific project sought to demonstrate that this neighborhood and the historic UNESCO core of Panama City, San Felipe, will be subjected to flooding from sea level rise and upland weather events over the coming decades.
Her proposal provides an approach for cultivating and reforesting the coastal marshland with a mix of mangrove species, while allowing for a mix of recreational and cultural uses for tourists and residents alike to engage with the biodiversity of this dynamic intertidal zone, which is rapidly changing due to the construction of a U Loop freeway connector constructed a decade prior.

Category 3 First Place Winner
Project Information:
Place: Portland, Oregon | 2008
Type: Multi Family Housing & Ecological Restoration Design Team:
Kina Voelz, Simone Goldfeder, Brent Hinrichs
Category 1
The requirements of this competition were to design a mixed-use living and commercial project on a multi-acre parcel of land within a forested riparian zone. Drawing from studies and observations of the regional habitat’s characteristics and environmental qualities, primary ideas focused on providing contiguous greenways and flyway “fingers” across the site to support, enhance, and intensify the cultivated and native riparian forest landscapes, common spaces, eco-swales, and building footprints that are organized as directional clusters running concurrent with the green tracks.
Use and form of the built environments within the tracks ebb and flow based on use: housing, gardens, orchards, outdoor sports fields, retail, neighborhood daycare, greenhouse, wood shop, craft center, fitness gym, offices, solarium.
Category 3
Awarded the first-place competition prize and published in Metropolis and Arcade, the design explored the question of whether natural habitats in urban environments, such as remnant Oregon oak savannah, could be enhanced, restored and cultivated through careful development that also supports increased human density at the neighborhood lot scale.
Principal member of the design team.

Alameda Plateau Cohousing
Project Information:
Office: In Collaboration with Constructive Form
Place: Portland, Oregon | Under Construction
Type: Land Use Planning, Landscape & Site Design, Housing, Community Commons General Contractor: RBL LLC
Project Role: Landscape, Site & Building Design, Concept Design thru Contract Administration; Planning & Jurisdictional Coordination.
A group of individuals came together with the intent of creating an inclusive cohousing community within a supportive, aging-in-place environment. Diverse is the array of builders and sub-contractors, and the age range of the initial group that will live here. Building on this, the project aims to connect its green spaces to the neighborhood at-large, to deepen biodiversity and community ties.
The buildings are arranged to maximize interior daylight, to balance rooftop shade and sun zones to allow for both solar panels and mature trees; and to create privacy from both the adjacent streets, and in between the community’s common spaces and individual patios at each dwelling. The series of outdoor rooms share a shade pergola space; an outdoor cooking zone and meeting area; covered outdoor workshop-studio zones; and a regenerative oak micro-habitat area located at the north.
Rainwater is retained on-site, collected and fed through cisterns to irrigate the vegetated spaces. In addition to creating edible garden zones with planting beds and small fruit shrubs and trees, selective portions will be reforested with native trees -oaks, silk tassel and quaking aspens-, with endemic mid and understory companion planting zones for each micro-zone. With the native plant palette, the goal is to build soil that can remove atmospheric carbon and create specific habitat zones that are mutually beneficial for flora and fauna, including humans.

Project Role: Jurisdictional Coordination; Landscape & Site Design, Concept Design thru Contract Administration; Building Design support during CD’s.
In this spectacular setting nestled at the base of the Las Platas mountains with Mesa Verde to the West, the first building to be constructed in downtown Mancos in over 100 years features an inclusive, participatory art-making and active space with a new street-facing community plaza, affordable housing, and wildlife corridor adjacent to the Mancos River, a tributary of the Colorado Rivershed.
Adjacent to the riverside, is an area for growing native and dye plants to be used in the studio’s print making, as well as acting as a zone for filtering run off and storm water flow from the Northern Plaza and the building roof. Drought tolerance and ease of maintenance were the primary goals for the planting areas, as well as the invitation for non-human inhabitants from the green corridor to access the site before heading back into the larger watershed and beyond.

Project Role: Community Engagement & Masterplanning; Jurisdictional Coordination; Design & Historic Review; Project Management, all design phases thru CA.
While working with Mahlum Architects, Kina managed multiple projects at varying phases in collaboration with Canby School District. In this endeavor, she worked closely with approximately 8 - 20 colleagues depending on the design phase and point in the overall timeline. Throughout she worked closely with senior project architects and designers to create beautiful as well as practical and functional spaces desired by the District while meeting budgetary requirements.
The District sought a 20 year “look ahead” masterplanning and strategic visioning plan to serve their Spanish and English speaking student body; multiple building renovations across their elementary and middle schools; and a new science-forward high school wing to compliment their robust career-focused curriculum. They also wished to bring maker and flexible creative spaces to their lower grade bands, and Kina and her team worked closely with the district administrators to engage faculty from multiple schools to bring them into the decision making process. This resulted in flexible-use spaces with integral digital and analog technologies to support indoor-outdoor education, access to creative outlets for kids with varied learning styles, and cross-disciplinary teaching opportunities.

Innovative Place Making Emerges from Existing Communities
Project Information:
In Collaboration with Ying Zhang, University of Pennsylvania Place: Kingsessing + Bartram’s North, Philadelphia, PA | 2023
As a starting point, youth- oriented design guidelines were generated for a new intergenerational neighborhood with a community land development and ownership model, with the goal of bringing home and business ownership to residents not typically served in this often overlooked area of Philadelphia.
Building on the traditions and cultural foundations of the long-standing neighborhoods and historic Bartram’s Garden along the Schuylkill River, the design is derived from the existing neighborhood fabric-- at the block scale, at the community scale and at the 15 minute walk scale.

Antica Terra
Project Information: Office: with Constructive Form Place: Amity, Oregon | 2016
Kina worked closely with Antica Terra and Lillian Winery, and her team to review, uncover, discover all aspects of the current winery and vineyard operations, the winemaker’s aspirations and business goals, as they considered the possible forms that new hospitality venues might take, analyzed how to create a better work flow during harvest, and explored the best use their facilities in the off season.
This preliminary plan work gave Antica Terra guiding tools to look ten years ahead and imagine the evolution of their winery design, guest experience, and growth. Since then, their business team has put parts of this feasibility planning work into place. In 2020 Kina designed a new outdoor crush pad area giving Antica Terra much needed flexibility during harvest for their meticulous winemaking process.

This Office-Studio replaced the former garage for the original 1913 home. Its rooms are organized to maximize views to community spaces, natural day lighting, ventilation, and views into the semi-private outdoor spaces and adjacent tree canopies. Rainwater is retained on-site for irrigation of native gardens. This project is all electric, with no fossil fuels needed within the addition and is insulated above code standards. Phase 2 planning allows for facade greening through a trellis system and connection with the existing dwelling, in order to access a new roof garden, further enhancing the neighborhood biodiversity, creating cooling and further off-setting carbon use.

This family-owned building was, at one point, a mining provisions outlet, a long-standing beloved Chinese restaurant and now has been used for multiple commercial tenants. This project was supported by METRO’s ‘Main Streets’ pilot project, which sought to bring new storefront improvements, including windows and doors, new building awnings, signage and exterior painting, to prominent, downtown Oregon City commercial buildings.
Project Role: Feasibility Studies for Tenant Space Options; Jurisdictional Coordination; Design from Concept Design thru Contract Administration; Feasibility Study for Phase 2.
Principal designer-architect for new Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc., offices a nonprofit that trains and advocates for women in the construction trades. This project is located alongside a major commercial and transit corridor in northeast Portland and the client wished for a strong connection with the street and by extension, the community.
The raw space allowed for an increase in staff work spaces at both the ADA-accessible ground level and at a new mezzanine (completed in Phase 2), and includes a generous entry and job resource area, as well as meeting, counseling, and other staff areas.
The design brought daylight deep into the section and creates a sense of connectedness, visibility, and openness throughout while permitting acoustic and privacy separation.
Volunteers and support from skilled tradespeople, students, and vendors helped OTI to minimize project labor and material costs by building out some of the interior scope of work. The focus on simple and direct detailing was designed to accommodate a range of skill levels. Finishes were also selected for a healthy working environment with vibrant colors to create a sense of wellness and act, in a sense, for intuitive wayfinding.
