Kina Voelz Site, Design Documentation + Technical Portfolio
In over 20 years of designing a wide variety of places, I strive to expertly synthesize the multiple forces that influence a project. Informing all aspects of my diverse design practice is the intent to seamlessly integrate built and natural environments. In this interweaving, I work to create a world that delights and inspires us, promotes physical and emotional health and safety, and counters the forces changing our planet.
In addition to practicing architecture and landscape design, I have taught construction methods for Oregon Tradeswomen; coowned two well-known Japanese restaurants; lived in Stuttgart, Germany and Sapporo, Japan; and I grew up in a multigenerational farming family.
Thank you kindly and respectfully, for your consideration.
Type: Land Use Planning, Landscape & Site Design, Housing, Community Commons
General Contractor: RBL LLC
A group of individuals came together with the intent of creating a cohousing community within a supportive, aging-in-place environment. Kina was part of the design team that led the architectural, site and landscape design.
The buildings are arranged to maximize interior daylight, to balance rooftop shade and sun zones to allow for both solar panels and mature trees; and to create privacy from both the adjacent streets, and in between the community’s common spaces and individual patios at each dwelling. The buildings are clustered around a common green, within which are a series of outdoor rooms: a shade pergola space; an outdoor cooking zone and meeting area; covered outdoor workshop-studio zones; and a regenerative oak micro-habitat located at the north, acting as both a privacy block from neighbors and a biodiversity backdrop for the common spaces.
Rainwater is retained on-site, collected and fed through cisterns to irrigate the vegetated spaces. In addition to creating edible garden zones with planting beds and small fruit shrubs and trees, selective portions will be reforested with native trees -oaks, silk tassel and quaking aspens-, with endemic mid and understory companion planting zones for each microzone. With the native plant palette, a goal is to build soil that can remove atmospheric carbon and create specific habitat zones that are mutually beneficial for flora and fauna, including humans.

Certified Platinum in the LEED for Homes Pilot Project.
Designer involved with design development, construction document production, and contract administration.
The site of this Southwest Portland residence slopes gently from east to west. The design arranges interior spaces and outdoor areas to the east and south, away from the street, emphasizing views back to an existing grove of trees and extensive gardens. The clients for this project were interested in exploring and integrating a number of environmental responses into their new home.

FOUNDATION DESIGN AROUND TREES IN FOREGROUND
COLEMAN CREEK

COLEMAN CREEK RESIDENCE
PROJECT GOALS:
• Minimize site disturbance and build toward the east property line, away from the lower elevation wetlands
• Outside of the building footprints, keep healthy trees
• Design foundation system to minimize impact to tree root zones. This system consisted of a combination of helical piers and concrete grade beams. The purpose of the former is that the holes for the drilled piers are less than 12” in diameter, and the latter can be poured above the tree root zones.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• I coordinated and schematically developed all site development and proposed infrastructure:
- Assessment with arborist, Joe Balden, to tag hazard trees and “keepers”
- Work with County Roads to provide access to the future home site
- Coordination with the State Department of Environmental Quality on the peat pod, low impact septic system; Water District to design alignment for new waterline; electrical line alignment with local power company; and cable and internet provider
- During CD’s I assisted with structural helical pier foundation details and grade beam details.
• I assisted with in field Construction Administration
