In celebration of UAE Innovation Month in February, Khalifa Innovation Center and Khalifa University, in partnership with Techstars, organized the Khalifa University-Techstars ‘Science to Business Entrepreneurship Bootcamp.’ The three-day bootcamp allowed KU students the chance to merge their desire to study advanced technologies and their desire to be involved in innovative solutions that benefit the community. They delved deep into entrepreneurship and experienced the journey from research idea to startup creation. A total of 28 students divided into seven student teams participated. They learned how to take a research idea and devise a business model, perform market research, and create value propositions. The selected research concepts that students developed

into business ideas covered key areas like renewable energy, transport, education, health technology and ‘water space’. The list of concepts included: • Electrocardiogram (ECG) Auto-Interpreter • Atmospheric Moisture to H2O Convertor • Bladeless Drones • Low Cost Glucose Sensing Device • Online Educational Videos • Contact Lenses for Color Blindness Correction • Portable device for loop mediated isothermal amplification for COVID-19 detection

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

The students participated in hands-on workshops on Innovation Strategy, Lean Canvas, Customer Development, and Value Propositions and Assumptions Mapping. The bootcamp culminated in a final pitching day, where they pitched their business idea to the judging committee. The judging committee included Vijay Tirathrai, Managing Director of Techstars Riyadh and Dubai Accelerators; Johan Maree, Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC). The top three winning teams were: • 1st Place: Contact Lenses for Color Blindness Correction – Meletetsega Gebeyehu, Ayesha Alkhaaldi, and Hermon Berhe • 2nd Place: Converting Atmospheric Moisture to Water – Mariam Aljeneibi, Saheed Adeosho, Alia Aldashti, and Hanin Amara • 3rd Place: COVID-19 Portable Device – Shaikh Abdullah Rais Ahmed, Noora Alzaabi and Osama Mussawar Winners received a Techstars bag, Certificate of Completion, and a gift voucher. Marwa Alblooshi, BSc in Mechanical Engineering student, said she participated in the bootcamp because she plans to be a major player in the UAE’s transformation from an oil-based economy to a knowledge-based one. She worked on the “Online Educational Videos”

research idea, which she explained is a search engine for educational videos that filters out videos with false information in order to give users the best content quality videos. “This experience taught me that by following the right steps, anyone can start a business even in less than a week as we did in the Bootcamp. Moreover, if you want to start a business idea, you have to put others needs before yours in order to make the idea a success,” Marwa shared. Dana Alhosani, MSc in Biomedical Engineering student, also got a lot out of the bootcamp. She worked on a research idea that she came up with herself, called “ECG Auto-Interpreter.” ECG stands for electrocardiogram, which is a test administered by clinicians that records the electrical signals in your heart to detect heart problems and monitor heart health. The ECG Auto-Interpreter interprets the ECG signals automatically, giving accurate diagnoses of patients in critical situations. Dana said she learned a very important lesson during the bootcamp: “I learned that with collaborative minds, we can come up with new ideas from seeing things from other perspectives.” She was very inspired by the positive reactions to her business idea, and she says she will continue working on her start-up model.
