The Khalifa University community joined His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, the country’s leadership, the people of the UAE, and the entire world in deeply mourning the passing of Late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan on 13 May 2022. In line with other government and private institutions, Khalifa University is currently observing the 40-day mourning, having canceled all celebratory activities and events. Late Sheikh Khalifa was the second President of the UAE and the 16th Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. He was born on 7 September 1948, at the Al Muwaiji Fort in Al Ain. He assumed his posts as the Ruler of Abu Dhabi and as the President of the UAE on 3 November 2004, succeeding his father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who served as the UAE’s President from 1971 to 2004.

KHALIFA UNIVERSITY JOINS GLOBAL COMMUNITY IN MOURNING LATE SHEIKH KHALIFA

Late Sheikh Khalifa’s demise has additional significance for Khalifa University, which is honored to bear his name, and under whose term in office, became the fastest growing university in the world, was ranked 183rd globally in the QS World University Rankings – the highest rating achieved by any university from the UAE, while also remaining consistently top-ranked in the UAE for six years in a row. Moreover, in 2019 Khalifa University became the first and the only university from the UAE to find a berth in the prestigious Shanghai-based Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). May Almighty grant him eternal peace!


They have also been applied in addressing issues such as human nutrition in the erstwhile Yugoslav Army, berthing allocation in the Hong Kong Harbour, and the Petro-Brazilian over-rig transportation, among others. A highly cited researcher with more than 22,000 citations according to Google Scholar, Dr. Mladenovic has also led or participated in several international research projects in the UK, France, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Serbia. He has taught in many countries, including France, the UK, Canada, Belgium, Serbia, and the UAE.

KU COMMUNITY MOURNS PROFESSOR DR. NENAD MLADENOVIC The Khalifa University community also mourns the sad demise of Dr. Nenad Mladenovic, Professor, Industrial and Systems Engineering. Dr. Mladenovic was ranked #2 scientist in the UAE, according to the Guide2Research 2020 Computer Science and Electronics Top Scientists Ranking, for his work in ‘Optimization’, also known as Operations Research. Only scientists with an H-index of at least 40 within the area of Computer Science and Electronics are included in the Guide2Research ranking. An internationally accomplished researcher and academician, Dr. Mladenovic was renowned for his contribution to the creation of the well-known optimization and AI method called ‘Variable Neighborhood Search’. Widely popular because of its simplicity and efficiency, this method is used in many areas including healthcare, telecommunication, logistics, and machine learning. His paper on the VNS metaheuristics with Dr. P. Hansen was selected among the 30 most influential, published in the European Journal of Operational Research (EJOR) in its 30-year history, and was ranked the 8th most cited in 40 years of the Journal.

Winner of several awards and honors including the International grant competition Research in Brussels, Belgium (1998), Dr. Mladenovic was also President of Yugoslav Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (YU-SIAM) in 2001, Visiting fellow of GERAD multiuniversity research center, Montreal, Canada in the same year, and Fellow of Scientific Society of Serbia (2003). He was also on the Editorial Board of Elsevier journals and a Fellow of Academy of Nonlinear Sciences – Serbia in 2008. In 2010, he was Co-Editorin-Chief of an international journal and was additionally on the editorial board of seven other publications. Before joining Khalifa University, Dr. Mladenovic taught at several universities in different countries, including France, Canada, Serbia, and the UK. Since 2012, Dr. Mladenovic has been a member of the Academia Europaea, a non-governmental organization of scientists and scholars whose aim is to promote learning, education, and research. Dr. Mladenovic’s fields of scholarship include Operational Research, Combinatorial and Global Optimization, Variable Neighborhood Search - general heuristic for solving optimization problems, Location theory - Operational research field where variables represent facility locations, Clustering and Data Mining, Industrial mathematics, Mathematical Programming, and Numerical Algorithms.

Dr. Mladenovic is profoundly missed by faculty colleagues for his enthusiasm. Dr. Andrei Sleptchenko, Associate Professor, Industrial and Systems Engineering, said: “We will definitely miss his energy. KU OFFERS SIX SPECIALIZATIONS ON COURSERA Khalifa University has partnered with Coursera Inc., one of the largest online platforms in the world, making its rich and relevant content accessible to Coursera learners worldwide. Khalifa University will launch six specializations on Coursera in the second half of 2022, including Machine Learning and Deep Learning Methods: From Data to Decisions; Artificial Intelligence for Executives; and Introduction to Digital Design FPGA Based Training. The university will also offer courses targeted to a broader audience, including Arabic for Beginners and Online Course Development Processes. Khalifa University of Science and Technology has announced RenAIssance, a team of researchers and collaborators, has won the grand prize at Ericsson’s ‘UAE Together Apart Hackathon’ for its solution RenAIssance. The grand prize includes a fully-paid visit to showcase the solution at Ericsson’s Headquarters and engage with the entrepreneurial community in Stockholm, Sweden. The Hackathon, organized under the patronage of the UAE Ministry of Economy, is inspired by the UAE Vision 2021 objectives, and aims to accelerate the journey towards a more connected future and solving global challenges.

The RenAIssance team includes Dr. Mecit Can Emre Simsekler, Assistant Professor, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Khalifa University; Dr. Siddiq Anwar, Physician, Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City and Adjunct Associate Professor at Khalifa University College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Khalifa University alumni and Engineering Systems and Management Master’s graduate Himanshu Upadhyay, and Dr. Mohammad Yaqub, Assistant Professor, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence. RenAIssance re-imagines a world where high-quality medical care can be consistently provided to improve healthcare outcomes across the globe. TOP HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS LEARN CODING AND MORE DURING EKTASHIF SPRING CAMP 2022

Forty-eight UAE high school students participated in the virtual Ektashif Spring Camp, which ran from 28 March to 6 April 2022. Ektashif is a program organized by KU’s Outreach Office designed to teach high achieving students in grades 10, 11, and 12 programming languages so they can create games, apps, robots, and more. This year’s cohort was a diverse mix of students from different backgrounds and nationalities. Thirty-six were UAE national students, while 12 were international students from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, India, Oman, Yemen, Sudan, Palestine, and Iraq. The two-week long program included programming workshops on C++ and MATLAB, as well as workshops on MBTI personalities, discussions on undergraduate major selections, courses on building critical thinking and grit, and much more. The students enjoyed the experience and the opportunity to gain important skills and knowledge in C++ and MATLAB, both powerful programming languages. Coding will equip youth with the skills needed to excel in the world as it moves towards a more automated and digital future, and it is an integral part of Digital Literacy, or the ability to effectively and appropriately use technology. These skills are becoming increasingly important in the employment market, particularly in the highgrowth industries of big data, blockchain, robotics and other tech sectors.

KHALID AL NAQBI WINNER OF THE EMIRATES YOUNG SCIENTIST COMPETITION

Congratulations to Khalifa University’s Khalid Al Naqbi, BSc in Mechanical Engineering, who won the Emirates Young Scientists Competition in the Biological & Ecological Science category for his research into an innovative way to convert waste into electrical energy and methane gas.

HALIMA ALNAQBI WINNER OF THE L’OREAL-UNESCO FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE YOUNG TALENTS Congratulations to Khaifa University PhD student Halima Alnaqbi, who was awarded at the 2022 L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Middle East Regional Young Talents Program, along with 5 other women from the Middle East. The program rewards talented young female scientists in the field of Life Sciences and Physical Sciences for the quality of their research works and encourages them to pursue a brilliant career in science in Yemen and GCC countries. Halima studies Biomedical Engineering and works to advance knowledge of genetics, particularly Arab genetics, in order to develop new strategies to treat and prevent human disease.

KU STUDENTS WIN TOP 3 SPOTS AT NYUAD HACKATHON FOR SOCIAL GOOD IN THE ARAB WORLD

Congratulations to #KhalifaUniversity students who won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place at the 10th NYU Hackathon for Social Good in the Arab World, which this year focused on one of the most promising technologies of our time: Quantum Computing. Over the course of the three-day programming hackathon, our talented computer science students worked in teams to develop game-changing innovations that leverage the power of quantum computing. 1st place went to Team Qudra, with KU team member Salem Al Haddad: They developed a way to bring quantum advantage to distributed and renewable energy grids for enhancing energy security and sustainability. 2nd place went to Team qVerified, with KU team members Omar AlRemeithi and Shahad Fikri: They developed an automated solution for checking whether an application has been correctly compiled using IBM Qiskit based on the open-source MQT QCEC tool.

3rd place went to Team 22, with KU team members Mariam Alsafi, Tiemar Semere Berhe and Yaphet Elias Weldegebriel: They developed a way to optimize routing of mobile medical services.

KU STUDENT PART OF RTA’S TRANSPORT HACKATHON 2022 1ST PLACE WINNING TEAM

Muhamed (rightmost in the photo) and his teammates took the top prize at RTA’s Transport Hackathon 2022. Computer Engineering sophomore student Muhamed Nebuhan Shajahan was part of the team who won first place in the recently concluded RTA Transport Hackathon 2022. Muhamed’s team was composed of other students from universities around the UAE. Muhamed’s team developed the winning app, Scooty, to provide a safe riding experience for e-scooter users. As the number of e-scooter users steadily grows, it is important to ensure that not only the riders but everyone in the community is safe. Joining the Hackathon was a great learning experience for Muhamed. “Khalifa University is committed to nurturing students’ potential and skills, particularly teamwork and collaboration. The opportunity to be able to participate in competitions such as the RTA Hackathon has helped me collaborate with individuals from different schools to brainstorm and conceptualize innovative solutions to some of the pressing challenges in our communities,” he said. KHALIFA UNIVERSITY TAKES 3RD PLACE WIN AT THE AAPG IMPERIAL BARREL AWARD PROGRAM Khalifa University proudly took home 3rd place at the latest American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Imperial Barrel Award Program-Middle East Region. The program is an annual competition for geoscience graduate students from universities around the world. Winners are awarded scholarship funds for their schools. The KU Team was composed of Earth Sciences graduate students Abdulquadri O. Dauda, Abdulwaris Ramoni Ajagunjeun, Ahmed Khaled Eleslambouly, Andreas Fernandez Moncada, and Omar Aldhanhani under the guidance of their team advisor Dr. Mohammad Alsuwaidi, Assistant Professor of Earth Sciences. The team was able to identify 13 different leads within the area that covered aspects such as environmental risks, reserves estimation, etc. They then delivered the results of their analysis to a panel of industry experts. DR. ADDAD APPOINTED TO THE EDITORIAL BOARD OF THE NUCLEAR ENGINEERING AND DESIGN JOURNAL

Dr. Yacine Addad, Associate Professor of Nuclear Engineering, Associate Chair of the Nuclear Engineering Department, and Deputy Director of The Emirates Nuclear Technology Center (ENTC), has been appointed to be part of the Editorial Board of the Journal Nuclear Engineering and Design. Nuclear Engineering and Design is a Q1 journal, with its first issue dating back to 1965. It covers disciplines involved in thermal-hydraulic, mechanical, and structural aspects associated with nuclear fission energy. “With all the accolades that our department has been receiving recently, including, but not limited to, the establishment of the ENTC, a research center cofunded by KU, ENEC, and FANR back in 2019, then successfully hosting one of the most prestigious international conferences in the field of nuclear engineering, ICAPP2021, organized by Khalifa University back on October 2021, this came as an icing on the cake to demonstrate the significant impact that our team is making at an international level. As such, I am extremely proud to be part of this very dynamic environment with highly motivated fellow researchers and scientists from the nuclear engineering department,” Dr. Addad commented.

DR. JIJU ANTONY RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS CROSBY MEDAL FROM THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR QUALITY

Dr. Jiju Antony, Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering, was presented with the prestigious Crosby Medal by the American Society for Quality (ASQ). The Crosby Medal is awarded to individuals who have published renowned books that significantly contribute to the promotion of the philosophy and application of quality management principles, methods, and techniques. Dr. Antony received the award for the book The Ten Commandments of Lean Six Sigma: A Guide for Practitioners. The book presents the perspectives of practitioners, researchers, and academics offering their expertise on various topics of quality and continuous improvement such as Lean, Six Sigma, and Lean Six Sigma. This book is an essential and practical guide for senior managers and executives who want to achieve operational excellence in all organizations of any type and size. “I am delighted and truly honored to be recognized among several other scholars, leading academics and practitioners in the quality management community on the global stage. I would like to thank all the nominees who have chosen my book for this special recognition and many thanks to my co-authors who worked with me on this remarkable book. AICHE ELECTS DR. LOURDES VEGA AS NEW FELLOW

Dr. Lourdes F. Vega, Professor of Chemical Engineering and Director of Khalifa University’s Research and Innovation Center on CO2 and Hydrogen (RICH), has been elected as a new fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the highest grade of membership of the institute. AIChE Fellows, nominated by peers and elected by the board of Directors, are prominent members recognized for their significant service to the profession and contributions to the industry. This is a new recognition of her work in the area of clean energy and sustainable products, for which she received the Mohammed Bin Rashid Medal of Scientific Distinguishment in 2020. “I am very honored with this election. Being recognized by peers is very rewarding. Thanks to all my colleagues and collaborators who led to this achievement, without you it would have been impossible!”

SUCCESS FOR KHALIFA UNIVERSITY TEAM AT WOMEN TO IMPACT 2022 RESILIENCE CHALLENGE FOR TAKEABREATH STRESS MONITORING FACEMASK

THE TAKEABREATH FACEMASK COMBINES SOPHISTICATED MACHINE LEARNING WITH ADVANCED SENSORS AND GAMIFICATION TO ADDRESS THE STRESS AND ANXIETY LEVELS BROUGHT TO THE SURFACE BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. Stress can show itself in many different ways and often at inconvenient times. Continuous monitoring of stress and anxiety levels can help people to intervene before their stress becomes too much and a team from Khalifa University has developed a facemask to do just that. Not only does their facemask help monitor stress, it is linked to a smartphone app that offers breathing games to help reduce stress levels. Dr. Anna-Maria Pappa, Assistant Professor, Dr.Sofia Dias, Research Scientist, and Prof. Leontios Hadjileontiadis, Biomedical Engineering Department Chair, collaborated with Dr. Sahika Inal, King Abdullaziz University of Science and Technology, to develop a smart mask that monitors stress and offers intervention techniques, including games and breathing exercises, to the user. Out of 314 applications from all over the world, the innovative mask won third place in the Women to Impact 2022 WEP Resilience Challenge. The Women to Impact Resilience Challenge, organized by the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), is aimed at individuals and teams from around the world with technology-based solutions that help local ecosystems build resilience to real-world challenges such as climate change, disasters, epidemics, food insecurity, and environmental degradation. The Khalifa University team entered the Health track which required their solution tackle ‘the prevention, detection and treatment of diseases and pandemics.’ The takeAbreath team received a prize of USD 5,000 for their solution in an award ceremony held on the 20th of January.

DR. MOHAMED EL MOURSI NAMED AS AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATE EDITOR FOR 2021 FOR IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER SYSTEMS

Khalifa University’s Dr. Mohamed Shawky El Moursi, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has been recognized by the IEEE as one of its 2021 Outstanding Associate Editors for his work and dedication to the journal IEEE Transactions on Power Systems. The Outstanding Associate Editor award is given to associate editors who have significant contributions to the success of an IEEE journal publication through the quality of their reviewed papers they have handled and the number of papers they have reviewed. “I really enjoyed my experience as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, which is the top journal in my field of Power Systems. It has been an honor to work with the world-class professors, experts and Editors-in-Chief in the editorial boards of IEEE Transactions and contribute to the remarkable success of the PES Journals since 2016. I am also grateful to Prof. Nikos Hatziargyriou, (Editor in Chief) for his excellent leadership of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems,” Dr. El Moursi said.

DR. DEEPAK PUTHAL HONORED WITH EARLY CAREER AWARD FOR CONTRIBUTIONS IN SMART COMPUTING

Dr. Deepak Puthal, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, was honored by the IEEE Smart Computing Special Technical Community (SCSTC) with the Early Career Award, a recognition for young researchers and scientists who have made outstanding strides in their respective industries early on in their careers. Nominees for the Early Career Award should have significant and relevant research contributions and a strong academic record, achieving these within 10 years after obtaining their PhD degrees. Dr. Puthal is making a name for himself in the field of smart computing with his groundbreaking research in cybersecurity, blockchain, and Internet of Things (IoT)/edge computing. A few of his notable works are Proof of Authentication (PoAh), the first-ever blockchain consensus for IoT; PUFChain, a hardware-assisted blockchain; and CryptoClinqIn, a graph-theoretic cryptography using clique injection. He is also a co-developer of two open-source simulators, the IoTSim-Edge and the IoTSim-SDWAN. “I believe that we should put ourselves forward and join competitive international awards. KU POSTDOC RECOGNIZED AS EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY CHAMPION

Dr. Hans Huybrighs, Postdoctoral Fellow, Space and Planetary Science Center, was recognized as a European Space Agency (ESA) Champion. This honor is awarded to individuals for their outstanding contributions in communicating about space in Europe. As an active science communicator, Dr. Huybrighs won first place in the Storytelling category for sharing his passion and knowledge of science and space through his workshops, talks, and writing. “While I’m honored to receive this recognition, there are so many more stories to tell about the moons of Jupiter! I look forward to continuing my research in the UAE at Khalifa university to further our understanding of the solar system,” commented Dr. Huybrighs.

DR. VINOD KHADKIKAR APPOINTED AS DISTINGUISHED LECTURER FOR IEEE INDUSTRY APPLICATIONS SOCIETY

Dr. Vinod Khadkikar, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and IEEE Fellow, has been appointed as one of IEEE Industry Applications Society’s Distinguished Lecturers for 2022-2023. The Distinguished Lecturers Program offers opportunities for different IAS chapters to invite and host renowned and experienced lecturers to present a topic within their area of expertise. Through the program, researchers and technical experts from different IEEE regions will be able to interact and directly share their knowledge and specializations to IEEE chapters. “I am excited for this IAS DL appointment and I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experience gained in the areas of power quality, renewable energy integration, and electric vehicles,” Dr. Khadkikar said.

DR. IBRAR YAQOOB TO SERVE IN THE EDITORIAL BOARD OF TWO JOURNALS

Dr. Ibrar Yaqoob, Research Scientist, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has been appointed to two editorial boards. He joins the editorial boards of IEEE Network Journal and Elsevier’s Future Generation Computer Systems Journal as a technical editor. As editor, he will be sharing his expertise in mobile edge/cloud computing, big data, IoT, blockchain, and computer networks. “It is an honor to represent Khalifa University and serve in the editorial boards of two top-ranked and high impact factor computer science journals,” Dr. Yaqoob said.

Published Books Faculty and researchers from Khalifa University have published an Elsevier book “Algal Biotechnology: Integrated Algal Engineering for Bioenergy, Bioremediation, and Biomedical Applications.” Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad ,Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Fawzi Banat, Professor & Chair, and Dr. Hanifa Taher, Assistant Professor, all from the Department of Chemical Engineering, have published an Elsevier Book as editors titled “Algal Biotechnology: Integrated Algal Engineering for Bioenergy, Bioremediation, and Biomedical Applications”. Algal Biotechnology covers the latest developments in algal biotechnology and engineering, including bioenergy, biomedical, and environmental applications. The 21-chapter book addresses the cost-effective production of biofuels through integrated biorefineries that use a variety of algae as a feedstock for the production of biofuels, bioenergy, and biochemicals. Various algae cultivation and bioprocessing technologies are discussed to optimize operations and reduce costs. In addition, numerous optimization methods based on existing and new biochemical pathways are described to maximize the potential for biofuel and related nutraceutical and biomedical byproduct production.
