len opettanut sarjakuvaa eri oppilaitoksissa yli 20 vuotta. Opetustyöni Taideteollisessa Korkeakoulussa aloitin silloisella Taideosastolla vuonna 1998 apulaisprofessori Sakari Marilan pyynnöstä. Kurssille annoin nimeksi Sarjakuvailmaisu. Esikuvia sillä ei ollut, joten rakensin sisällön oman näkemykseni mukaisesti palvelemaan opiskelijoita mahdollisimman monipuolisesti. Vuonna 2007 opetus laajeni Sarjakuvan sivuaineeksi ja mukaan opettamaan tulivat Katja Tukiainen ja Ville Hänninen omilla kursseillaan. Sarjakuvailmaisu 2:n sisällä Riikka Ala-Harja on ohjannut käsikirjoitusintensiivikurssin ja Emmi Jormalainen graafisen teknologian intensiivikurssin. Vuodesta 1998 olen opettanut vähintään yhden korkeakoulutasoisen kurssin vuodessa, useimmiten kaksi tai kolme. Tänä vuonna opetan Sarjakuvan perusteet ja projektityö -kursseilla Taideteollisessa Korkeakoulussa. Taideteollisen Korkeakoulun Avoimessa yliopistossa ohjaan Sarjakuvan perusteet ja Sarjakuvan muodot -kurssit.

Aloittaessani opetustyötä oli pääosa sarjakuvataiteilijoista itseoppineita. Laajamittaista mestari/kisälli -toimintaa ei Suomessa esiintynyt. Ala opittiin sarjakuvia lukemalla ja sarjakuvia tekemällä. Opettamaan opin omien opettajieni esimerkin kautta. Tärkeintä opettamisessa on kiinnostus oppilaiden töihin. Kiinnostuksella ja välittämisellä pääsee jo pitkälle. Ei niillä perille pääse, mutta niistä on apua.

Kuunteleminen on tärkeämpää kuin äänessä oleminen. Parhaat opettajani olivat Helga Reinikainen, Sakari Marila, Raimo Puustinen ja Kaarina Kaikkonen, kukin omalla tavallaan. He suhtautuivat työhönsä vakavasti. Huonojakin opettajia osui kohdalleni ja myös heiltä opin paljon.

Turhautumisen ja pettymyksen voi aina kääntää edukseen. Jotkut niistä huonoista taatusti yrittivät parhaansa, useimmat eivät. Taideopettajaksi tullaan monia reittejä, eivätkä kaikki välttämättä koe olevansa ansaitsemallaan paikalla. Voi olla että sydän on jossain muualla.

Tämän lehden sarjakuvat ovat entisten ja nykyisten oppilaideni tekemiä.

Osa niistä on saanut alkunsa kursseiltani.

vakurssilla. Juliana Hyrrin, Anna Raatikaisen ja Suvi Ermilän työt tilasin tätä lehteä varten.

Olen suosinut tehtäviä jotka aloitetaan tarinoita kertomalla. Jokaisen peruskurssini aloitan tehtävällä, jonka opin Muoto-opin opettajaltani Severi Parkolta vuonna 1985: ”Piirrä kartta lapsuuden kodistasi.” Se tehtävä on toiminut aina.

Myöskään ”Paikat joissa olen asunut” ei ole koskaan pettänyt. Sen opin Riikka Ala-Harjalta ja olen teettänyt sen jokaisella perusryhmälläni vuodesta 1998 alkaen.

Lynda Barryn ”Elämäni autot” olen teettänyt muutamaan kertaan. ”Kesätyöpaikkani” olen antanut tehtäväksi usein. Sen tehtävän keksin itse. Työpaikkojen pitkäveteisissä rutiineissa on jotain äärimmäisen kiinnostavaa, enkä koskaan kyllästy kuulemaan niistä lisää pikkutarkkaa tietoa. Tehtävä josta pidän, mutta jonka olen harvoin antanut oppilailleni on ”Isovanhempieni/vanhempieni kirjahylly”.

Minulla on selvä käsitys siitä mitä aloittelevan tekijän on hyvä oppia sarjakuvasta tai taiteesta yleensä. Vaivannäkö on tärkein yksittäinen opittava asia.

Useimmilla kursseilla joku ennemmin tai myöhemmin ihmettelee kuinka hidasta sarjakuvan tekeminen onkaan. Toinen tärkeä asia jonka haluan opettaa on yksityiskohtien voima. Yksityiskohdat paljastavat että tekijä on paneutunut aiheeseensa, että hän on kiinnostunut tarinastaan. Kaikki mikä tuntuu joltain, haisee joltain tai maistuu joltain on merkityksellistä. Omia aiheitaan kannattaa

lähestyä uteliaisuudella ja ihmetyksellä, seurata niitä minne ne ikinä haluavatkaan tarinaa viedä. Ei ole yhtä oikeaa tapaa rakentaa sarjakuvakertomusta. Käsikirjoitusoppaiden säännöt eivät päde kuin hetken työn aloittamisen jälkeen. Ne eivät kykene tarjoamaan vastauksia muuta kuin hyvin yleisluontoisiin kysymyksiin.

Todelliset vastaukset tulevat konkreettisen piirtämisen ja kirjoittamisen kautta. Oppilaiden omat tarinat, heidän omat kokemuksensa, heidän tapansa nähdä maailma ja heidän persoonansa ovat kaiken lähtökohta.

Opetuksessa tarvitaan kokemuspohjaa. Kokemuspohja syntyy siitä, että kamppailee tai on kamppaillut itse niiden samojen asioiden kanssa, joiden kanssa näkee oppilaidenkin kamppailevan. Työ valmistuu ruutu ruudulta. Tunnelin päässä on valoa. Kaikkiin ongelmiin on ratkaisu.

Tarinan varaan voi asettua ja se kantaa.

Kaikki tarinat kantavat jos niihin uskoo.

Koulua ei olisi ilman oppilaita. Kaiken tulee alkaa ja päätyä heihin. Opettajan tehtävä on poistaa itsensä yhtälöstä, mutta ennen sitä saada oppilas uskomaan että hän on turvassa, eikä mitään pahaa voi ikinä tapahtua.

MH ENGLISH SUMMARY I have been teaching comics and graphic narrative within different institutions for over twenty years.

In the year 1998 I started the first Comics Expression course in the University of Arts and Design in Helsinki. In 2007 the course expanded into a minor subject, including special courses by specialist teachers. The comics in this issue are all from students from my different courses.

In the beginning most comics artists were self-taught. I learned to teach by following the example – good and bad – of my own teachers.

I’ve started every basic course with the same assignment, learnt from my former teacher Severi Parkola: “Draw a map of your childhood home”, and it has always worked.

The ability to listen and genuine interest in the students’ work are the basic elements of teaching. As for the students, they learn to work with the perseverance that comics require. The student needs to feel safe enough to continue on his/her own, so that in the end the teacher is no longer needed.

Sananen sarjakuvaopetuksesta

S

arjakuvan opettaminen on Suomessa edelleen pitkälti pioneerityötä, mutta joitakin yhteisiä käytäntöjä on jo alkanut muodostua.

Aalto-yliopiston sivuaineen lisäksi kokonaisvaltaista yleissivistävää, ei-tutkintoon johtavaa sarjakuvaopetusta aikuisille annetaan tällä hetkellä ainakin Kymenlaakson, Limingan ja Muurlan opistoissa. Kansalaisopistoissa ja taidekouluissa on erillisiä sarjakuvakursseja.

Myös Sarjakuvakeskukset Helsingissä, Oulussa ja Turussa tarjoavat kursseja monen ikäisille.

Sarjakuvaopetuksen konkari, entinen Limingan vastuuopettaja Keijo Ahlqvist, nykyiset Limingan Taidekoulun Sarjakuva- ja animaatiolinjan vakituiset opettajat Tessa Astre ja Mikko Jylhä sekä vastuuopettaja Sami Aho Muurlan opistosta kertovat sarjakuvaopetuksen nykytilanteesta.

Opetussuunnitelma? Sarjakuvalle?

TA: Limingan OPS on nykyisten vakiopettajien tekemä ja pohjaa 17 vuoden sarjislinjatraditioon, alun perin Keijjo Ahlqvistin työhön.

MJ: Opetussuunnitelma on viitteellinen, mutta tärkeä työkalu. Siihen jätetään väljyyttä vieraileville opettajille.

SA: Muurlan opistossa opetussuunnitelmaa muokataan sen mukaan, millaisia tarpeita oppilailla minäkin vuonna on.

Myös vaihtuva ryhmäkoko vaikuttaa käytettävissä oleviin resursseihin.

KA: Valtakunnalliseen sarjakuvan opetussuunnitelmaan ei ole syytä pyrkiä, sillä monipuolisuus ja ristiriitaisuus on elintärkeää keskeneräisen kerrontataiteen edistämisessä.

TA: Itse toivoisin sarjakuvaopettajien valtakunnallista yhteistyötä. Yhteistä opsia voisi soveltaa kunkin opetusasteen tarpeisiin eikä sen tarvitsisi olla sitova.

Sarjakuva sopii erinomaisesti integroitavaksi moniin perus-, ammatti- ja lukio-opintojen ainesisältöihin.

Tämä on sarjakuvaopen tärkein tehtävä:

KA: Pitää opiskelija toimeliaana. Jos sarjakuvaopiskelija löytää opetuksen kulussa aivan toisen alan, opettaja on yhä onnistunut.

MJ: Jakaa omasta osaamisesta opiskelijalle se, minkä kokee opiskelijaa hyödyttävän. Opettajilla helposti on selvä käsitys siitä mitä sarjakuvasta tulee oppia. Omat

oppilaani ovat aika harvoin kanssani samassa käsityksessä. Vasta kun oppilaaseen on tutustunut, tietää mille hän on vastaanottavainen. Toisaalta useat oppilaat tuntuvat kaipaavan opettajasta antagonistia, jota vastaan kapinoida. Siinäkin opitaan, molemmin puolin.

TA: Sarjisopettaja on turvallinen auktoriteetti, johon voi nojata etsiytyessä uuden äärelle, ja muuntuu pikkuhiljaa kollegaksi, jota uskaltaa jo kyseenalaistaa.

Open pitää olla tietoinen ajassa olevista ilmiöistä sekä taide- ja pophistoriasta.

SA: Opetus sisältää paljon perusteita: anatomiaa, perspektiiviä, sarjakuvan perusteoksia. Palkitsevin ja hauskin vaihe on valmistuvan työn ohjaaminen, mutta ensin oppilas on saateltava siihen pisteeseen, että on oma työ, jota edistää.

Ilman opiskelijoita ei olisi opettajia

SA: Opistojen hyvä puoli on se, että opiskelijoiksi saavat tulla kaikki. Moni nykyään sarjakuvalinjalle tuleva haluaa tästä itselleen ammatin ja myös sen mukaista opetusta. Toisaalta osa ajautuu opistoon koska ei vielä tiedä mitä elämältään haluaa. Vaihtelevat motivaattorit ovat haaste.

TA: Yhä useammalle opiskelijalle tehdään monista syistä henkilökohtainen opetussuunnitelma. HOPSit haastavat meitä opettajia muokkaamaan oppisisällöt kaikkien opiskelijoiden saavutettaville. Monet erityistyökalut ovat käyttökelpoisia sellaisenaan ns. normiopiskelijallekin.

SA: Mangakulttuurin ja tutoriaalien koulimat oppilaat saattavat olla hyvinkin taitavia piirtämään, mutta sarjakuvan vaatima tarina puuttuu vielä. Kertomisen työkalut on helpoin opettaa selkein, usein perinteisin esimerkein. Toisinaan linjalla mukana on kokeneempia, 50–60-vuotiaita opiskelijoita. Elämänkokemus auttaa selvästi tarinoiden luomisessa, ja eri ikäpolvet keskustelevat yhteisestä kiinnostuksen kohteesta sujuvasti.

KA: Näen että opet ja opiskelijat ovat ensisijaisesti ihmisiä ihmisille. Opettajalla on työ: auttaa opiskelijaa. Ihmisellä on kutsumus auttaa ihmistä.

Taustaorganisaatio mahdollistaa työhön keskittymisen

KA: Oppilaitos tukee parhaiten opetuksen onnistumista takaamalla aineelliset voimavarat ja pysyttelemällä taustalla.

TA: Meidän oppilaitoksessa luottamus

ja resursointi ovat toimineet varsin hyvin.

SA: Tämän suhteen on ollut erilaisia vuosia. Jos opettaja joutuu itse opettamaan kaikkea, myös niitä osa-alueita joita ei ihan hallitse, se on stressaavaa: oppilaille joutuu tavallaan valehtelemaan. Parasta on, kun löytää asiantuntevat tuntiopettajat vastaamaan itselle vieraammista alueista.

Jääkö opettajalle aikaa tehdä taidetta?

Opettajan on hyväkin olla itse aktiivinen taiteilija, mutta oma taiteellinen työ on joskus vaikea sovittaa yhteen opetustyön vaatimusten kanssa.

KA: Oma taiteellinen työ ja opetustyö ovat sikäli ristiriidassa, että oma maku häiritsee palautteen antamista. Pitää eläytyä opiskelijan pyrkimyksiin – ne voivat kuljettaa sarjakuvataidetta ennen kokeilemattomille poluille.

MJ: Pyrin pitämään oman työskentelyni jatkuvana, mutta erittäin kevyenä. Opettaminen antaa hyvän tekosyyn tekniikkakokeiluille.

TA: Opetus nappaa todellisia tuntejaan enemmän henkisiä resursseja.

Opiskelijoihin kiintyy, ja vasta vuosien praktiikka opettaa pitämään terveen etäisyyden. Työajan rajaaminen auttaa jaksamaan, samoin kuin keskusteleva ja tukeva lähikollega.

SA: Itselleen pitää antaa anteeksi se, jos ei piirrä lukukauden aikana. Paras tapa paneutua omaan tekemiseen on hakea apurahaa ja toteuttaa projekti sille varatulla ajalla.

TA: Residenssitoiminnan parempi saavutettavuus olisi hyvä tuki sarjakuvaopettajien taidetyöskentelyyn. Limingassa toimii kolmatta vuotta sarjakuvataiteen residenssi yhteistyössä Oulun Sarjakuvakeskuksen kanssa. Taiteilijavalinnan painotus on opettajuudessa.

KA: Sarjakuva on tärkein taiteenala, koska se on vielä kesken, se on demokraattista ja se on mahdollista yhdistää lähes mihin tahansa muuhun taiteeseen.

Aihe on rajattu aikuisten (yli 16-vuotiaat) opetukseen. Kirjoittaja on toiminut opetusvastaavana Helsingin Sarjakuvakeskuksella vuodesta 2014.

1 There were old apple trees beside the road. The lawn continued over a shallow ditch 2 all the way to the paved road. 3 There small rocks always flew all over the place. They clanged against the lawnmower’s metal cap. 4 From among the berry bushes grew shaggy blue vetch. 5 Hiding under the branches was a sparse growth of thin pale hay and one had to push the heavy mower back and forth under the bushes to cut it. 8 Lawnmower exhaust fumes blowing against my face.

1 And in that one spot a cloud of dust rose from the ground if one forgot to tilt the mower in time. 3 Near the shady spruce hedge, lumpy roots rose above ground. 4 I got the chills every time the mower violently scraped their surface. 5 And when metal touched rock, sparks flew and with that bump the engine stopped. 7 At the end of the summer I already knew my way around all the dangerous spots. 9 I went there once a week. Euro had just replaced markka and I got a 20 euro note as payment.

This makes sudden stops and pedaling FULL SPEED possible! 4 Wanna go for a test ride? / Yeah!

1 Umm... / Spin the pedals around to get your feet in the cages. And remember to pull them out before you stop! 2 So this bike won’t move if I quit peadling. / This is kinda neat. 4 When stopping my legs felt stuck in the cages. 5 ...Uoo! / DOINK! 7 My elbow swelled and stiffened immobile for two weeks. / Wait, I’ll bring a cold pack!

In the cross-pull between the cage and the leg my foot was twisted 180 degrees inwards. 7 I didn’t fall, but the ligaments of my ankle were torn and the malleolus was broken.
