TWO SCHOLARS PROGRAMS The Multicultural Scholars Program Social Work increases retention and academic performance of undergraduate social work among students of color and first-generation college students, with a special interest in supporting transfer students from Haskell Indian Nations University and community colleges throughout Kansas.

Students selected for the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Scholars Program are asked to identify an area of DEI and present on it to their colleagues, staff, faculty, and the community; and share a poster about their presentation at the DEI End of Year Celebration.

GUARANTEED INTERNSHIP BSW students have one required practicum, or internship during their senior year. The Field Education Office works closely with students and agencies to secure an enriching field practicum experience. Students are place in social work agencies that alight with their interests and future career goals. Field practicum settings include public health clinics, community mental health centers, child welfare agencies, court services, senior center and community development projects.

BSW PROGRAM The School of Social Welfare provides the education and experience necessary for a career in social work. By helping shape students’ capacity for caring, the school prepares social workers to carry out the specific purposes of the profession, to develop human potential, to promote individual well-being, and to bring about a more just society. The BSW program prepares students for generalist practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. at the entry level and prepares students for advanced graduate work in social work, as well as for degree programs in other disciplines. Students will be able to practice competently, under professional supervision, with a variety of client systems, and at all system levels upon graduation.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS The curriculum prepares students for the professional responsibilities of social work and helps them acquire the skills needed for effective social work practice.

• 120 total hours of course work including 12 hours of field practicum • 51 Social Welfare hours including SW 220 or equivalent • 41 hours of general education requirements • 28 hours of electives • KU cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 or higher • Grade-point average of 2.5 in required social work courses

FOUNDATION OF STRENGTHS VISION OF JUSTICE MISSION OF CHANGE To supplement the student experience, all incoming students are asked to state their vision of justice - big or small. We hope students use their vision to assist and help structure ideas for their coursework. If used throughout various aspects of the program, by graduation, the student will have a body of work that is designed to create change and move us all closer to a more just society.

UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION TO KU Students are directly admitted to the School of Social Welfare as new freshmen and transfer students. Must be admissible to KU by assured admission. Current KU students changing from another major to Social Welfare should complete a Change of School form and must meet the advancement requirements

UNDERGRADUATE ADVANCEMENT REVIEW FOR THE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WELFARE For BSW students to advance in the Program and into 500 level coursework they must complete the following: • 54 hours of General Education requirements including: • Math 101 (College Algebra) or LA&S 108 (Personal Numeracy) • English 101 (Composition) • English 102 (Critical Reading and Writing) • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 • Earned grade of B or higher or CR in SW 220 (Intro to Social Work) • One letter of reference from a faculty member or instructor or work or volunteer supervisor. Personal or character references are not accepted.

• Submitted electronic copy of the BSW Student Standards and Advancement Policies & Procedures, NASW Code of Ethics, and the KU Code of Student Rights & Responsibilities.

If all of the above criteria are met, students are successfully advanced into 500 level coursework.

Students have until July 31, 2021, to complete required courses and/or provide (1) letter of recommendation. Should advancement criteria not be met by the deadline, students will be administratively dropped from 500 level Social Work classes.

Should a student’s cumulative GPA be below a 2.5 and between 2.25 and 2.49, the student may advance and will be on probation for the fall semester. If at the end of the fall semester the cumulative GPA is not at or above a 2.5, the student will be dismissed from the BSW Program.
