24 HOURS IN HAMBURG

HAMBURG RESIDENTS ARE OFTEN ACCUSED OF BEING COLD, NOT PARTICULARLY FRIENDLY AND RATHER TACITURN. NOT TRUE, WE SAY!

Located between Millerntor Stadium and the Karoviertel district, the nearly 50-meter-high bunker in St. Pauli has long since become a landmark for young Hamburg. The St. Pauli Bunker also houses an event and school sports hall, various dining options, and a hotel. A highlight is the 560-meter-long mountain path that leads up around the exterior facades. From the free, public city garden at a height of 58 meters, visitors enjoy spectacular views of Hamburg.

Off to the photo booth at Lattenplatz! We recommend squeezing at least four people into the small booth, then it‘ll be really fun. Or, if it‘s just two of you, sit really close together. Get ready, grin, make faces, kiss, and wait for the flashbulbs. All that‘s left is deciding who gets to take home the strip of photos. It‘s best to take enough so everyone gets one.

There are palm trees in Hamburg? Of course, the legendary metal palm trees in Park Fiction! In the early morning hours, you can sometimes have this spot all to yourself and enjoy the view over the hill to the docks. During the day, people play basketball, drink beer, and picnic here. Incidentally, office towers were once supposed to be built on this site. But local residents managed to convince the city to create a public park instead. We love it!

4 PURE ROMANCE AT THE WATERLIGHTSHOWS

Do you have a date and don‘t know where to go? Want to treat your friends to a special evening picnic? Then pack some snacks, drinks, and a picnic blanket and meet up at the Water Light Show in Planten un Blomen. All summer long, the water light artists will enchant you with their magic. To classical music, especially film scores, the water fountains dance their very own ballet. From kitschy to incredibly romantic, it‘s definitely a mustdo in Hamburg!

PARK LAKE PLANTEN UN BLOMEN , PETERSBURGER STRASSE 22, 20355 HAMBURG MAY 1 – SEPTEMBER 30: FROM 10 P.M.

On the banks of the Leinpfad canal on the Eppendorf side, Hayns Park begins, which is not only perfect for jogging but also ideal for an extensive BBQ. Around the spray-painted Monopteros, you have a wonderful view of the Alster and the beautiful Winterhude houses opposite, which we would all love to move into.

Whether French toast, blueberry pancakes, or eggs Benedict with truffle hollandaise: Café Kernig, located in the heart of Hamburg-Winterhude, has recently begun offering fantastic, unusual creations, especially for breakfast or brunch. The new restaurant is located near Mühlenkamp. It features mint-colored walls and plenty of wood inside, and an outdoor terrace overlooking the hustle and bustle of the nightlife district on Hamburg‘s Alster Lake.

5 FRANZBRÖTCHEN AT THE MAIN STATION

The Wandelhalle has more to offer than just sloppy fast food: Franz & Friends‘ Franzbrötchen are crispy on the outside but squishy on the inside, and still taste good the next day. Perfect for those who want to stock up. In addition to the usual suspects, there are also unusual Franzbrötchen variations, such as rice pudding, pumpkin seeds, caramel, apple, or banana pieces. Perfect for visiting friends who miss Franzbrötchen—pick up a batch just before the train!

8 SITTING ON THE WATER

Café Entenwerder is especially worth a visit in good weather, as it offers a lovely spot by the water. Whether you‘re looking for a cold beer, a hot cup of coffee or something to fortify yourself for your upcoming walk, you‘ll find it here! A visit to Entenwerder isn‘t just special for you; you‘re also supporting a good cause. Among other things, the café funds the Entenwerder Elbe Pirates — a wonderful project initiated by Thomas Friese, where children can learn to sail for free.

The Isemarkt is definitely one of the most exciting markets in the city: Located directly beneath the subway bridge, you‘ll find nearly a kilometer of fresh vegetables and delicious fruit, as well as textiles and great coffee. Along the way, there are stalls selling fresh fish, all of which will fulfill your maritime culinary dreams.

6 SECOND-HAND TREASURES

In the bright, open shop on Schulterblatt, you can browse in a relaxed atmosphere, try on clothes, and walk out with your next vintage treasure. As befits good secondhand shopping, you should take your time and try on your way through the items. In general, a lot of emphasis is placed on gathering really cool vintage pieces, and you might even find the occasional designer piece!

9 MODERN AFGHAN CUISINE AT MEMÁN

Anyone who fears bland food should definitely pay a visit to Memán on Schulterblatt. Here, you‘ll find modern Afghan cuisine with delicious spices. We recommend the „Mantu“, lovingly handmade by owner Mohammed‘s mom, delicious filled dumplings and traditional Afghan Qabeli rice with braised eggplant. They also offer a weekly changing lunch menu and some really good drinks in the evening, like a fantastic espresso martini!

The focus here is entirely on the infrared sauna, which, unlike traditional saunas, uses light radiation to gently warm you from within. The cardiovascular system and metabolism are stimulated at lower temperatures – but you‘ll still sweat, of course! If you like, you can combine your visit with lymphatic drainage to enhance the detoxification effect. Whether with or without a massage, you must book an appointment in advance.

PAULINA ROCK

What are your earliest childhood memories of sneakers?

A friend of my mother‘s who lives in the US sent us a package when I was little. For me, the package contained truly the freshest sneakers ever – Nike basketball shoes, baby blue, and with a smooth surface – I‘d never seen such cool sneakers in person. I knew immediately that you simply couldn‘t find such shoes in Germany back then. I was incredibly happy! When I put them on, I realized how uncomfortable they were, but I still wore them with pride and felt super stylish.

What is more important to you when buying shoes: comfort or style?

With the answer to the last question, I realize that I‘m definitely not the same Paulina I was back then, because today comfort is clearly more important to me. Don‘t get me wrong, I still love rocking stylish sneakers, but for me, they have to be comfortable first and foremost. Another unpopular opinion: for me, sneakers don‘t have to look immaculate. There‘s something special about shoes being a little dirty. It lets you see the life inside the shoes, and I like that.

What are your first memories of sneakers from your childhood? Sneakers were the definition of coolness even as a child. Whether on TV, in magazines, sports or with family.

Do you prefer wearing sneakers or other types of shoes? I‘ve been collecting sneakers, rare items, and collectibles my entire life. However, I now also wear other types of shoes: boots, loafers, Birkenstock, slides and trainers.

Do you have a specific pair of sneakers that holds special meaning to you?

Definitely my first pair of Off-White sneakers, the Blazer! The first high fashion/streetwear collab and thus a true collector‘s item.

If you could choose any pair of sneakers, no matter how expensive or rare, which would you choose?

I would get another pair of Jordan/off whites, because Virgil Abloh has created the synergy between streetwear & luxury and I find this incredibly impressive.

My name’s Aaron. I’m originally from Cape Town, South Africa, and I’m currently living in Berlin. One of my first memories of sneakers was getting a pair of dark green ones—my favorite color at the time. They were probably some knock-offs, but I absolutely loved them. I was convinced they made me run faster.

To be honest, I’ve always preferred boots, but lately I’ve been getting more into the street style of sneakers. It feels like I’m tapping into another side of my personality. I’m quite picky when it comes to shoes and clothes, I don’t buy often, but when I do, I fully commit. My Oakley Light Breath Trekking Shoes in Deep Black have basically been everywhere with me.

I usually go for sneakers with a trail aesthetic, something with a Vibram sole that can handle any terrain. I’m quite spontaneous, so I like being ready for whatever the day throws at me. Style’s important to me. Maybe I sound crazy but sometimes at the cost of comfort, but I really pay attention to how something feels and functions. I don’t wear super bright colors either, I prefer more grounded tones with a bit of edge.

I actually broke in my latest pair of sneakers on the first day of spring here in Berlin. The sun was out, everything was starting to bloom, and I went for a run through Hasenheide and across Tempelhofer Feld. It was the perfect way to start the season.

If I could pick one dream pair to own, it’d probably be the Nike Air Jordan 14—the ones Michael Jordan wore in the 1998 championship final. I’d only use them for basketball… or maybe just keep them in a display cabinet as a piece of history. The shoes in these photos are my recent favorites, the Asics Sienna Sportstyle, I can tell i‘m going to have these for a while.
