Another year has passed and we’ve just added six new lieutenants to our list of AFROTC Det 630 alumni. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first year here teaching, molding, and mentoring future leaders of the AF and I have also had the pleasure of meeting, talking on the phone, and corresponding via e-mail with many of our distinguished alumni (you’re all distinguished in my book). I look forward to meeting even more of you in the upcoming few years. I hope you are having a pleasant and safe summer and wish you all great health and happiness as we prepare to embark on a new school year.

Cindy, Thanks so much for the email! This was a pleasant and encouraging interlude during my day. It’s amazing to see how Det 630 has grown since my graduation and commissioning in 1994, and I’m pleased to see that the current cadet corps is just as motivated and energized as we were. The amount of memorabilia is impressive, and has motivated me not to be outdone by Joe Galleti! I’ve attached a photo in response to your request—the patches will be en route soon. This photo is from one of my most rewarding moments, as a former student of archaeology and anthropology at KSU, a field which still intrigues me. As Deputy Chief, USCENTAF Commander’s Action Group, I was escorting Lt Gen North, USCENTAF/CC, on a tour of US air bases in Iraq in 2006. Ali air base (formerly Tallil) was located near An Nasiriyah, and the fenced perimeter included this site, the fable Ziggurat of Ur, a millennia-old religious site from possibly the first city in civilization’s history, and later birthplace of the biblical Abraham. We were given a personal tour by the former head curator of the national museum of Iraq (long out of work at that time), and got to climb the 4,000-year-old steps to the top of this edifice and survey the ruins of ancient Sumeria below. It was a breathtaking moment, as many archaeologists have never had this opportunity. Only in the USAF! Thanks again for the newsletter, it brings back many great memories of my time at Det 630. Ms Smith, I appreciate the recent Det 630 newsletter. KSU has been on my mind recently as read about the winter storm that closed the university earlier this week. I can’t remember a time in my four years when winter storms closed the university. At least you will have a nice white blanket of snow for Christmas. The enclosed photo was taken in the back of an armored vehicle somewhere in the Southwest Asia theater. When I graduated in 1992, carrying a rifle into combat was the furthest thing from my mind. I was one of handful of Airmen deployed with Soldiers and Marines. It was a great experience. Happy Holidays, Vern

Thanks Cindy it's a very nice read. Do you have a large black and white picture of a stealth fighter F-117 hanging up in a cheap gov't frame? Cindy, thanks for the news letter and please keep them coming. May I suggest putting together a spreadsheet with the alumni information and sending it out periodically for updates. I’ve attached an example but feel free to make it your own. I think it’d be great to see how closely we sometimes work with other alum and never realize it. Cindy, I just opened your newsletter and love it!!! I'm enjoying my new job, but seeing all of the pictures makes me miss all of the staff and cadets at Det 630! Patches Coins Monetary DET 630 Visits:
DET 630 Cadet Eric Gadus watches during the 32nd Flying Training Squadron change of command ceremony June 24, in Hangar 199, at Vance AFB, Oklahoma. His sister, Lt Col Michelle Pryor assumed command after serving as the director of operations with the 32 nd. Cadet Gadus then presented his sister with an engraved KSU black squirrel (unofficial mascot) in honor of her achievement.
