FINANCE SCHOLARS

2022-2023 Annual Report

2022-2023 Annual Report
The Gates Capital Management Center for Financial Analysis established the K-State Finance Scholars Program with the aim of equipping students for careers in investment banking, asset management, private equity, and management consulting.
The 2022-2023 year witnessed remarkable growth and achievements for the program. Notably, a grand opening for the Gates Capital Management Center for Financial Analysis on the second floor of the College of Business building took place in Fall 2022. We hired a full-time program coordinator for the Center in April and organized six group trips, including the program’s first international trip to London.
Throughout the year, the program provided a great slate of workshops and alumni meetings for students. Our weekly meetings on Fridays at 7:30 am featured fifteen alumni and industry professionals as guest speakers. Additionally, we conducted eight workshops led by alumni, faculty, and friends, with the objective of enhancing students’ technical skills. Scholars actively participated in national competitions, as well as the Gates Capital Management
Stock Pitch Challenge, open to all K-State students. Furthermore, they took part in the second annual 24-hour Security Analysis Challenge, where they were tasked with creating comprehensive reports on public equity for investment purposes within a 24-hour timeframe.
Job and internship placements for our scholars have been outstanding this year. All seven program graduates are starting positions in our targeted sectors, while all junior and sophomore Finance Scholars obtained summer internships for 2023. A few scholars also secured internships for the summer of 2024. We owe this success to the incredible support of our alumni and friends, who serve as executive mentors within the target sectors, providing invaluable guidance to our scholars.
Program scholarships were restructured to reflect the amount of work, diligence and mentoring scholars put into preparing themselves and their peers for high-finance careers. Students are assigned rank titles (intern, analyst, associate, VP) based on the progress they make in professional development, course performance, technical knowledge, participation in program activities, and leadership capabilities.
An open invitation is extended to all interested parties looking to engage with the K-State Finance Scholars Program. We would be delighted to host you for meetings and workshops and to visit your offices, where we can learn from your expertise in the world of finance. We eagerly anticipate building upon the strengths of our program in the coming year.

Scholars are offered opportunities to attend networking trips. We traveled to six different cities throughout the year.
In the fall, Finance Scholars visited Dallas and were able to learn about several finance careers. Our newest members took a short trip to Kansas City. Late in the semester, we took a trip to Minneapolis to connect with alumni in investment banking and asset management.
“The opportunities as a member of the Finance Scholars Program have been transformative for me in my education, career, and personal life. The learning and networking experiences I’ve been afforded as a Finance Scholar have strengthened my technical skills, grown my knowledge of the industry, connected me with incredible mentors, and prepared me for the career I have always wanted.”

“Finance Scholar trips have been an unmatched opportunity to network with alumni and professionals from target sectors. Building a career in high finance seemed intimidating at first, but after witnessing the large alumni base K-State has in major cities, I was reassured that I can have the career I’ve always dreamed of.”

Blythe Bolar, AssociateScholars traveled to New York to focus on firms in asset management and investment banking. We also connected with K-Staters at an alumni dinner organized by program supporter Jeff Gates.
Additionally, Finance Scholars participated in their first international trip over Spring Break in London. They visited firms in asset management, trading and consulting sectors. The trip provided an excellent opportunity for scholars to understand the world of finance in a global sense. We plan to hold one international trip per year going forward.
“As part of the K-State’s Finance Scholars Program, I have participated in various finance workshops, such as the 24-hr Security Analysis Challenge and Training The Street Financial Modeling Workshop, to name a few. These workshops gave me the experiences needed to stand out among other candidates during internship interviews.”
~ Janis Asaris, AssociateA group of scholars traveled to Kansas City to attend the DeMarche Investor conference in the fall. In the spring, Finance Scholars attended a conference hosted by the Chicago Booth Private Equity Group and the Polsky Center. The conference brings together investors, students, and entrepreneurs to network and share insights into the dynamics of investing in a constantly changing economy.
“K-State Finance Scholars introduced me to lifechanging opportunities and experiences. With support from the program I have made lifelong relationships with alumni and faculty, traveled the country/world, learned valuable technical skills and life advice, and built lasting friendships with peers.”

This year, we repeated the 24-hour Security Analysis Challenge that we started last year. Students were assigned a company and had 24 hours to analyze the company in teams and make a call on trade recommendations. We hosted Jeff Gates on campus for a workshop based on the teams’ findings and suggestions. Below are photos of student teams during the challenge, many of whom stayed early into the morning to finish their reports.
A dedicated space for Finance Scholars was established in the Fall of 2022. This space provides a home for Finance Scholars to hold small group meetings, work on projects and competitions, study for classes, as well as take advantage of the two available Bloomberg terminals. The center provides comfortable seating, a live CNBC feed, a daily copy of the Wall Street Journal, and snacks & drinks for students’ comfort.

In April 2023, Julia Parcell joined the Finance Scholars team as the Program Administrator. Julia traveled with the scholars to New York and brings with her 20 years of higher education experience, most recently working with students on professional development. She has been busy getting to know the scholars, learning fiscal tasks, and researching connections in the finance world. Julia has 3 daughters and her husband, Joe also works at KSU.

We express our gratitude to Jeff Gates and Justin Boisseau for their ongoing support of the Gates Capital Management Center for Financial Analysis, which serves as the host for the Finance Scholars Program. The comprehensive range of activities and prospects would not be accessible to students without their assistance. Mr. Gates has played a crucial role in facilitating student visits to New York City and establishing connections with alumni in the region.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Rob Schneider for his generous support of the Finance Scholars Program. Mr. Schneider’s valuable contribution has played a pivotal role in financing student opportunities and facilitating the development of the program.
We are grateful to Paul Edgerley for his support of the College of Business and Center. Mr. Edgerley hosts a group of Finance Scholars in Boston and connects them with companies in the area, including Bain Capital.
