Welcome to the 2014 Berkshire International Film Festival Come journey with us in this incredible ninth season, as we travel to Jordan, Afghanistan, Philippines, India, Chile, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Iceland, Morocco, Israel, and across the US. As we promise to do each and every year, the BIFF brings a diverse program to our wonderfully engaged and dynamic community.

We have programmed an incredible array of films dealing with complex and inspiring subjects: politics, activism, the environment, faith, education, innovation and of course, love. On that subject, we are thrilled to have the East Coast Premiere of MAY IN THE SUMMER for our opening night film. A wonderful story that weaves the clash of cultures, traditions and family, beautifully filmed with the exotic backdrop of Amman, Jordon. Celebrate one of the most stirring and inspirational, but little-known story in America’s favorite pastime with the BATTERED BASTARDS OF BASEBALL. Whether or not you are a baseball fan, this crowd-pleasing film, tells the true underdog story of the irrepressible Bing Russell (father of Kurt Russell) and the rise of the Portland Mavericks which he bought for $500. It will leave you cheering. England’s favorite comedy duo, returns to the big screen with THE TRIP TO ITALY. Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, reprise their hilarious culinary and cultural road trip through Italy improvising their impressions of their favorite actors over plates of delicious pasta and seafood. The trips just keep getting better! In addition to those highlights, BIFF brings 75 of the best independent narratives, documentaries and shorts from 18 countries…BIFF brings the world to you! With each year, the BIFF gets stronger and we achieve more than we set out to do and this year is no different. Thanks to everyone that has joined the REEL Friends Film Society. Because of the tremendous response and your generosity, we have been able to make BIFF year round with monthly events for our film society, special screenings and receptions with filmmakers. As always, a great many people have spent the entire year helping to bring this festival to our community. Thank you to an incredibly dedicated board of directors and BIFF staff led by Lauren, the endless, selfless efforts of the advisory board and programming producers, the generous support and loyalty of our sponsors, the energy and spirit of our volunteers, my PIC, the Triplex and Beacon staff, Mahaiwe staff, as well as the towns of Great Barrington and Pittsfield and the support of the merchants and restaurant-owners. And lastly, and most importantly, thank YOU - the best, most engaged audience for whom this has all been created. I would like to dedicate this year’s Festival to the memory of our dear friend, colleague and past President of the Academy, Tom Sherak, who died this past winter. He was a huge fan of the BIFF and supported the creation of the Filmmaker Summit. We were fortunate to have him as part of the BIFF family and will never forget his passion for life and the movies. Let’s kick-off another wonderful cultural season in the Berkshires see you at the movies!

The Battered Bastards of Baseball is an account of one of baseball’s great, unheralded true stories. In 1973 skepticism was high when actor Bing Russell, most well-known as Deputy Clem on Bonanza, created the only independent baseball team in America, the Portland Mavericks. With a team of unkempt, quirky, rejected players and operating in what was a wasteland for professional baseball, Bing’s Mavericks generated unprecedented success: they shattered attendance records, signed Kurt Russell (Bing’s son) as a player and team’s Vice President, produced the most successful batboy in baseball – Oscar® nominated filmmaker, Todd Field, re-launched the controversial career of Jim Bouton, had the first ever lefthanded catcher, the first female general manager, and inspired one of America’s beloved bubblegums – Big League Chew. Their spirit was contagious and the Maverick’s independence alarmed the professional baseball establishment, setting the stage for an epic showdown in 1977.

Two men, six meals in six different places on a road trip around Italy. Liguria, Tuscany, Rome, Amalfi and Capri. Rob and Steve are asked by The Observer to do another series of restaurant reviews. Rob, tired from the responsibilities of being father of a young child, is looking for adventure. Steve has been living a life of abstinence and hard work in Los Angeles but, now on a hiatus from his job, has the time to return to Europe and wants to see his children. On their journey, we see the hotels, the restaurants, the kitchens and chefs that make the food and then the bill at the end.

Rebecca is one of world’s top war photojournalists, capturing dangerous and chilling images in the most dire landscapes, all in an effort to shed light on the real cost of modern war. But she’s also a wife and mother, leaving behind a husband and two young daughters every time she travels to a new combat zone. After a near-death experience chronicling the ritual of a female suicide bomber, husband Marcus levels an ultimatum: give up the dangerous profession or lose the family she counts on being there when she returns from each assignment. Yet the conviction that her photos can make a difference keeps pulling at Rebecca’s resolve, making it difficult for her to walk away entirely. With an offer to photograph a refugee camp in Kenya, a place allegedly so safe that daughter Steph is allowed to join her, Rebecca comes face to face with just how much she risks each time she steps back into the fray. In this BIG CHILL for the iGeneration, a group of childhood friends come together for the last time at the scenic lake house where they all grew up, to comfort each other, rekindle old flames and drunkenly stumble down memory lane. The house brings out the adolescence in all of them, and what follows is a weekend full of drinking and dancing. Laughter and secrets. Sex, drugs, mischief and regret. Equally full of humor and heartbreak, BESIDE STILL WATERS explores the relationships that bind us together and keep us coming back for more.

But the Los Angeles Olympic Games were a disaster for them, and Pierre had to face up to his shortcomings. With the help of his wife Nadia and groom Raphaëlle, Pierre regained Jappeloup’s confidence and built a relationship that took them to victory in the Seoul Olympics in 1988. The film is set in the near future, and it looks back on how peace was made in 2013 between Israel and Palestine. It is the story of two businessmen - one Palestinian and one Israeli - who struggle to set up a solar energy company. Both come from societies where there is strong opposition to cooperating with the other, and the film tells how they overcome hostility from within their own families and from the people around them. In the end, they mount a Facebook campaign that brings popular support both to their joint venture and to the peace process. The film was produced by Amir Harel, an Academy Award-nominated Israeli producer, and directed by Sameh Zoabi, a leading Palestinian film-maker.

Based on the Tony Award-winning play by David Ives, which is based on Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s novella, VENUS IN FUR is set in a Paris theater after a long day of auditions. Writer-director Thomas complains that no actress has what it takes to play the female lead: a woman who enters into an agreement with her male counterpart to dominate him as her slave. Then actress Vanda bursts in. Not only is she a perfect fit (even sharing the character’s name), but she has researched the role exhaustively, memorized her lines and bought her own props. The likeness proves to be more than skin-deep as the balance of power shifts completely. English subtitles

Mark Landis has been called one of the most prolific art forgers in US history. His body of work spans thirty years, covering multiple styles and periods. And while the copies could fetch impressive sums, Landis isn’t in it for money, but instead donates his fakes to museums. When his ruse is discovered, Landis must confront the museum professionals clamoring for him to stop. However, it’s not clear that he can. ART AND CRAFT starts out as an art caper, rooted in questions of authorship and authenticity. In the hot and deadly summer of 1964, the nation eyes were on Mississippi. Over 700 student volunteers joined with local African Americans in an historic effort to shatter the foundations of white supremacy in one of the most segregated states. They canvassed for voter registration, created Freedom Schools and established the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party with the goal of challenging the segregationist state Democratic Party at the national convention. FREEDOM SUMMER highlights an overlooked but essential element of the civil rights movement: the patient and long-term efforts by outside activists and local citizens in Mississippi to organize communities and register black voters — even in the face of intimidation, physical violence and death. Through intimate, verité footage of both families, we witness first-hand the complexities within America’s child welfare system. Moreover, we come to understand the powerful role poverty and prejudice play in keeping parents and children apart—and the obstacles parents must overcome in order to put their families back together. May 29–June 1, 2014 | Ninth Annual

THE WINDING STREAM tells the story of the American roots music dynasty, the Carters and the Cashes, tracing the influence of their music from the 1920s through present day. The Carters didn’t just play the music of their hill country upbringing.

Saturday, 9:15pM - BEACON #5 Sunday, 11:30AM - Triplex #3

56

Yet the Carters suffered periods of obscurity. No one would have guessed that a young man who seemed more renegade than reverent adherent, would be the one to lift up the Carter legacy - Johnny Cash. The story of how the family rallied to help him beat back the demon of substance abuse and how he promoted the Carters name and music is one of tremendous reciprocity and love. Thomas is fourteen and perhaps because not much happens in his remote village in southwestern France, he likes to tell tales. But then one day, something really does happen to him, something that upsets his life and the lives of everyone around him. The lives of his grandparents. The life of his father, Maurice. The life of Martin, a stranger and fugitive he meets one day. The life of Alice, the companion of the two brothers, attached to them by childhood love, an attachment she will break only in death. The life of Lili, his mother, above all. Lili loves Thomas more than anything, but she has never done anything she should have done. Dissatisfaction is brewing in her like the storm that hits the village that day; she was only waiting for a flash like Martin to leave everything behind and go off to follow her destiny.

BIFF AT THE MOUNT Edith Wharton: The Sense of Harmony USA | 1999 | 57 min Director: Elizabeth Lennard

Sunday, 3:00pM - The Mount $10 general; free for Mount members and BIFF pass holders

A sweeping biography that follows Edith Wharton from the beaches of Newport to the frontlines in France and beyond and features the only known, and very rare, film footage of Wharton. Author of numerous bestsellers, Wharton was a cosmopolitan when cosmopolitanism was still a privilege of the elite. Wharton’s eyewitness accounts from the WWI battlefront helped convince the American public to join the allied forces. Wharton translated her “literary” concerns with the social plight of women into action by initiating selfsufficient “ouvroirs,” as well as hospitals and orphanages. A woman of action and a tireless traveler, Wharton took great pride in the building and design of her own home, “The Mount,” in Lenox. Director Elizabeth Lennard will give a talk-back after the screening.

Deep below snowy, cobblestone streets, in networks of winding subterranean tunnels, lives a civilization of hardworking mice, terrified of the bears who live above ground. Unlike her fellow mice, Celestine is an artist and a dreamer – and when she nearly ends up as breakfast for ursine troubadour Ernest, the two form an unlikely bond. But it isn’t long before their friendship is put on trial by their respective bear-fearing and mice-eating communities. ERNEST & CELESTINE leaps across genres to capture the limitless possibilities of animated storytelling. Based on the classic Belgian book series by Gabrielle Vincent, the film was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 86th Academy Awards.
