BIFF also celebrates the centenary of another legend, Pauline Kael, with the opening night film WHAT SHE SAID: THE ART OF PAULINE KAEL. Variety called the film, “an exquisitely crafted documentary about the woman who was arguably the greatest movie critic who ever lived.” Ms. Kael made her home in Great Barrington and watched films at the Mahaiwe Theater, so it feels more than appropriate to celebrate this woman at this time, in this community. BIFF closes with a film about one of the greatest achievements in the Berkshires—MASS MoCA. Premiering a few months ago at SXSW, this documentary takes us through the journey of conceiving, creating and building the largest contemporary art museum in the world in the depressed small town of North Adams...and what a journey it has been! In addition to the dozens of remarkable films, BIFF will host some special events throughout the weekend including GWFF USA’s Juried Prize Award for narrative and documentary filmmaking, free family film screenings, and panel discussions. It is also our third year hosting “Tea Talks.” This year’s lineup includes topical films and conversation about farming and big AG, gender disparity in the film industry, legal and medical marijuana and the CA music industry in the late 60s. I am so proud of the impact BIFF has had on our community and in the independent film industry. I want to thank everyone who has joined and continues to support the REEL FRIENDS Film Society as you are really the reason we can continue to produce a world class festival and bring great events and films to the Berkshires throughout the year. One of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema, Mr. Scorsese has created an astonishing number of masterpieces over his five-decade career. His love of the genre is extraordinary and is evident in every film he makes. As an artist, a historian, a mentor, and an inspiration, Mr. Scorsese has left a mark on cinematic history that will live on for decades to come. Over the past 14 years, BIFF has gathered stories from nearly every corner of the world and brought them to our Berkshire community. GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR BIFF EXPERIENCE! There are a lot of moving parts to the BIFF. The following rules and suggestions are to ensure that everyone who comes to the BIFF has the best experience possible and that our volunteers and staff can manage all of our events and screening.

ADMISSION

NOTE TO OUR PASSHOLDERS: To guarantee admission and priority early entry, you must be present at the venue 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time—a standard for all film festivals. Late seating is only permitted if easily accessible seats are available. Empty seats will be sold to festival-goers waiting patiently in our RUSH LINE.

RE-ENTRY INTO THEATERS

If you must exit the theater you must alert a BIFF usher to ensure re-entry to that same screening. This policy applies to passholders too.

FESTIVAL ETIQUETTE

• Do not bring outside food into the festival theaters. Our theater partners offer a variety of food and drink through their concession stands. Please help us honor their support of the BIFF. • Exit the theaters immediately after all screenings. This will allow staff and volunteers to clean and ready the theater for the next screening. • Do not save seats for other guests between shows. • Take your trash with you when you leave the theater. • Keep talking to a minimum when exiting theaters as to not disturb patrons in other theaters. • Recording equipment is not allowed in the theater. • Turn off all cell phones during the screening. • Do not talk during the screening so all of our guests may enjoy the film. • There is no late seating if the theater is at full capacity. • Lines often extend outside of the theater and temperatures in the theater vary. For your comfort, bring layers and dress appropriately.

The festival opens with WHAT SHE SAID: THE ART OF PAULINE KAEL, in celebration of the centenary of her birth. WHAT SHE SAID tells the story of longtime New Yorker film critic and best-selling author Pauline Kael. Featuring a rich blend of interviews with filmmakers and colleagues, never-before-seen archival footage, and Kael’s own words—the latter of which are drawn from interviews, private letters, and published writings that are narrated by Emmy Award winning actress Sarah Jessica Parker—WHAT SHE SAID depicts the storied writer’s battle to make a name for herself through covering some of the biggest cinematic milestones of the 20th century. ntroducing Martin Scorsese as a “filmmaker” is like calling the Great Pyramid of Giza a “rock.” His work, however (like the Great Pyramid), is a compelling lure to all tourists who trek into the dimly-lit land of the movie theater. And, like the Pyramids, experts continually study Scorsese’s films to try to unearth the secrets of their construction. For instance, what is it about the juxtaposition of the romantic glide of Travis Bickle’s yellow taxi through the rain-soaked, black streets of New York—girded by Bernard Herrmann’s provocative score— that so effectively sets up the tension of longing, despair and violence to come?

And what exactly is a “Scorsese film” when his oeuvre spans nearly every genre, from female-centric romantic dramas like ALICE DOESN’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE and THE AGE OF INNOCENCE to the brutal, hyper-machismo films like MEAN STREETS, RAGING BULL, CASINO and GOODFELLAS, to thrillers such as SHUTTER ISLAND and Oscar-winning

masterpiece, THE DEPARTED to historical biographies like THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, KUNDUN, SILENCE, THE AVIATOR, and his newest film, THE IRISHMAN. Add to this list black comedies (THE KING OF COMEDY and THE WOLF OF WALL STREET) and his fandom documentaries paying homage to subjects as disparate as The Band (THE LAST

WALTZ), Elia Kazan (A LETTER TO ELIA), George Harrison (GEORGE HARRISON: LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD), Bob Dylan (NO DIRECTION HOME)...to his parents (ITALIANAMERICAN), and to the New York Review of Books (THE 50 YEAR ARGUMENT) and one can understand that there isn’t a descriptive net big enough to capture all of Scorsese’s genius.

Oddly enough, despite being known for the violence of his films, perhaps it is the family-friendly, phantasmagorical HUGO that best describes what is a “Scorsese film.” First of all: it is the quintessential film nerd’s creation that draws from cinema’s past while using the technology of the future. Shooting in 3-D, unknown when he began his career in the late sixties, allowed Scorsese not only to reinvent the known “language of film” but to look backward, paying homage to the beginning of film itself by celebrating Georges Méliès, one of the fathers of cinema. The themes of loneliness, romantic longing, cruelty, the exploitation of power, and anxiety of belonging combine with his respect for family, historical figures, and the power of music. All of these themes are Scorsese’s obsession, found over and over in his work and expressed, as in HUGO, with the tools of craft—acting, editing, lighting, music, writing and technology—that have been sharpened by a lifetime of passion.

They were to be America’s answer to The Beatles. They weren’t. Instead they invented folk rock and attracted a generation of recording artists to Los Angeles. ECHO IN THE CANYON is a look back at the influence and the music of those artists (The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas & the Papas, the Beach Boys) from Southern California’s age of innocence (1965-1967), the beginnings of Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon music scene and how the echo of these artist’s creations reverberated between each other and across to London (where it alters the course of The Beatles themselves.) The songs from that era provide an entry point as Jakob Dylan and a new generation of artists whose own body of work reflect the echoes of that pivotal time (Beck, Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, Regina Spektor, Cat Power and others), interpret and perform the songs paying homage to, and in many cases in front of, its authors.

An 80-year-old translator, Ali Ungár, comes across a book written by a former SS officer recounting his war experiences in Slovakia. Ali realizes that one of the chapters may well describe his own parents’ execution. And so, armed with a pistol, he sets off to Vienna to look for the SS man and take his revenge. But once there, the only person he encounters is the man’s 70-year-old son Georg, a former teacher who has spent his whole life avoiding his father and suffering from an addiction to alcohol. The translator’s visit arouses Georg’s curiosity and he decides to invite Ali on a trip through Slovakia. But whilst Georg is basically out to have a good time, Ali is hoping to find out how his parents really died. Gradually, these two very different men begin to warm to each other and together, they discover a country that would prefer to forget about its past. Oscillating between comedy and tragedy, Martin Šulík’s road movie focuses on two old men weighed down by the unresolved conflicts that have plagued their lives who are now trying to free themselves from this oppressive burden. Premiering to rapturous reviews in this year’s Director’s Fortnight at Cannes, Ognjen Glavonić’s debut feature, THE LOAD, is a taut, suspense thriller. Set during the NATO bombing of Serbia in 1999, the story follows Vlada, a truck driver, who is hired to undertake a treacherous journey across a war-torn country to deliver a mysterious cargo.

MS. PURPLE is a drama about two Asian American siblings, Kasie & Carey, who grew up and are stuck in Koreatown, Los Angeles. Their mother abandoned them when they were young and they were raised by their father who is now on his death bed. They both have deep scars left from their upbringing that they are constantly trying to overcome as they struggle to navigate their own lives. Ultimately this story is about a mending of a relationship between a brother and sister and the regrouping of a family in the final days of their father’s life.

The classic Shakespearean tragedy is reimagined through a bold and new perspective, featuring Daisy Ridley (STAR WARS) as the title character. Naomi Watts and Clive Owen co-star.

The Fikirtepe district of Istanbul. Urban transformation is sweeping away the poor communities and Syrian refugees take shelter in deserted buildings. Kamil and his wife Remziye risk losing their home. Unemployed for a long time, Kamil, has no choice but to secretly accept a job on a construction site. Not only is he taking the job from a Syrian refugee, he’s also working for the company that’s destroying the area next door. Oppression and anxiety both in his neighborhood, where he fears discovery, and at work, where he’s accepted the low wages paid to refugees, gradually transform him. When Kamil suddenly disappears, Remziye has to face the consequences of his actions, which do not fit the man she knows. But she will not give up.

SAINT JUDY tells the true story of immigration attorney Judy Wood and her landmark case that changed American asylum law forever. In her first case, Judy Wood represents Asefa Ashwari, an Afghan woman who fled her home country after being persecuted by the Taliban for opening a school for girls. While juggling her life as a single mother, Judy fights tenacious battles alongside Asefa, both in and out of court. Eventually, their efforts bring them before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, where they succeed not only in saving Asefa’s life but, by changing the US Law of Asylum, the lives of countless women from around the world.

With SHADOW, director Zhang Yimou (HERO, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS) once again pushes the boundaries of wuxia action to create a film like no other, masterfully painting a canvas of inky blacks and grays punctuated with bursts of color from the blood of the defeated. In a kingdom ruled by a young and unpredictable king, the military commander has a secret weapon: a “shadow,” a lookalike who can fool both his enemies and the King himself. Now he must use this weapon in an intricate plan that will lead his people to victory in a war that the King does not want.

The year is 1956. During a visit to the cinema in West Berlin, high school pupils Theo (Leonard Scheicher) and Kurt (Tom Gramenz) see dramatic pictures of the Hungarian uprising in Budapest on the newsreel. Back at school in Stalinstadt, they spontaneously decide to hold a minute’s silence in solidarity with the victims of the uprising during a lesson. But the gesture causes much bigger ripples than expected: while their headmaster (Florian Lukas) initially tries to put the whole thing down to the whim of youth, the schoolchildren become objects of the political machinations of the fledgling East Germany. The People’s Education Minister (Burghart Klaußner) condemns the action as a clearly counterrevolutionary act and demands that the ringleader be named within a week. But the schoolchildren stick together, thus facing with a decision that will change their lives for ever. From farmer’s son to soil scientist to missionary and back to farmer again, organic pioneer David Vetter has dedicated his life to a “ministry to the soil.” With camera and camper in tow, Hawthorne leaves her urban California comforts in the rearview mirror to learn from the Vetters about what’s really going on in the corn belt. As interest in regenerating soil explodes worldwide, Hawthorne discovers that David Vetter is way ahead of the game. In the summer of 1965, the most popular song in America was the debut single by The Byrds. They were to be America’s answer to The Beatles. They weren’t. Instead they invented folk rock and attracted a generation of recording artists to Los Angeles. ECHO IN THE CANYON is a look back at the influence and the music of those artists (The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Mamas & the Papas, the Beach Boys) from Southern California’s age of innocence (1965-1967), the beginnings of Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon music scene and how the echo of these artist’s creations reverberated between each other and across to London (where it alters the course of The Beatles themselves). The songs from that era provide an entry point as Jakob Dylan and a new generation of artists whose own body of work reflect the echoes of that pivotal time (Beck, Fiona Apple, Norah Jones, Regina Spektor, Cat Power and others), interpret and perform the songs paying homage to, and in many cases in front of, its authors. FROM SHOCK TO AWE asks, “How do we heal our deepest wounds?” An intimate and raw look at the transformational journey of two combat veterans suffering from severe trauma as they abandon pharmaceuticals to seek relief in the mind-expanding world of psychedelics. Recent scientific research reveals that these substances can be used to heal PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). FROM SHOCK TO AWE also raises fundamental questions about war, the pharmaceutical industry and the US legal system. The documentary centers on veterans, Matt Kahl and Mike Cooley, and their challenging post-war lives, lives shattered by the trauma of war. The vets personally struggle with anxiety, fear, depression, anger and an overall inability to find an equilibrium in society and with their families. In order to deal with their erratic emotions and haunted state-of-mind, doctors prescribe intense pharmaceuticals with various side effects that bring them face-to-face with death. In response to the negative impact of traditional Western medicine, both vets begin to use cannabis as an alternative. Although beneficial on many levels, our heroes yearn for deeper healing. Mike and Matt decide to take ayahuasca, an Amazonian brew traditionally used for healing and spiritual insights. These warriors attend a weekend ceremony filled with hope...and fear of the unknown. Upon returning to home, they quickly learn that their families are not prepared for the rapid change. Unexpected twists and turns, and a desire to understand their husbands’ journeys, Aimee and Brooke embark on their own psychedelic healing journey with ayahuasca and MDMA respectively.

In response to a wave of discriminatory anti-LGBTQ laws in Southern states and the divisive 2016 election, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus embarks on a tour of the American Deep South. Led by Gay Chorus Conductor Dr. Tim Seelig and joined by The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, the tour brings a message of music, love and acceptance to communities and individuals confronting intolerance. Over 300 singers traveled from Mississippi to Tennessee through the Carolinas and over the bridge in Selma; performing in churches, community centers and concert halls in hopes of uniting us in a time of difference. The journey also challenges Tim and other Chorus members who fled the South to confront their own fears, pain and prejudices on a journey towards reconciliation. What emerges is a less divided America, where the lines that divide us—faith, politics, sexual identity—are erased through the soaring power of music, humanity and a little drag.

Lush and luxurious, California’s Napa and Sonoma Valleys are known for their topnotch wine making. The unsung heroes of the industry are the vineyard workers and small producers, who lovingly oversee all aspects of the wine-making process, from vine to vintage. Unfolding over the course of one of the most dramatic harvests in history, HARVEST SEASON follows three people whose lives are rooted in wine making, immersing the audience in the challenging and unpredictable process.

Every summer since 1914, Camp Pathfinder, a summer camp located on a small island in the wilderness of Canada’s Algonquin Park, invites a community of boys and young men from all across Canada and the United States to spend a few weeks in the backcountry learning how to camp, hike, canoe and fish. Two years ago Camp Director Mike Sladden, enraged by the tragic images from the growing global refugee crisis but inspired by Canada’s growing intake of asylum seekers, had an idea. In this documentary we get to know Arvo Pärt as an artist combining an incredible sensitivity with humor and energy in his work. His reputation stems from his deeply-held belief that it’s not through words that a great artist communicates, but simply through music. Though he may seem reclusive in his person, what he wants to say and what he means is written in notes. Pärt is known for his minimalistic style that employs his self-invented compositional technique “tintinnabuli.” It is this harmonious, spiritual and minimalistic approach to music that forms the basis of THAT PÄRT FEELING—a feeling of wholeness, beauty and essence of being, embraced by millions of persons all around the world. Cannabis has been off-limits to doctors and researchers in the US for the past 80 years, but recently scientists have discovered its anti-cancer properties. Armed with only these laboratory studies, desperate parents obtain cannabis oil from underground sources to save their children from childhood cancers. WEED THE PEOPLE follows these families through uncharted waters as they take their children’s survival into their own hands. Some of their miraculous outcomes beget the unsettling question at the heart of the film: If weed is truly saving lives, why doesn’t the government want people to access it?

THE WEIGHT OF WATER is a story of a blind man balancing fear in the chaos of kayaking whitewater rapids...not to mention drowning and the powerful desire to be free from a prison of darkness. He embarks, paddling his own boat, into the most iconic whitewater in the world, the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Erik has already overcome some stunning challenges for both sighted and blind people, including climbing Mount Everest. Whitewater kayaking is different. The current moves unpredictably. This is a story of a village kid, Dhruv. He is like any other kid his age—pure, playful, innocent and full of questions. His granddad is his constant companion— drops and picks him up from school, fulfills all his demands and tells him stories. One morning, Dhruv wakes up to see his granddad lying on the floor, wrapped in a white sheet, surrounded by people. He follows the people who carry his granddad on a stretcher to the river bank. The granddad now rests on a pile of wood and the pyre is lit. Dhruv has encountered death for the first time and his mind is full of questions. Raakh (Ashes) tries to delve into a child’s mind in the face of loss.

A hitman brings a down-on-his-luck guidance counselor into the desert to dig his own grave...but it turns out the ground is super hard and digging is WAY more difficult than it looks in the movies. As the day drags on, they learn about the fragility of the male ego, the myriad ways a small decision can destroy our lives, and how much it sucks to die in the desert.

Two goodfellas are driving across the hot California desert to see the Boss when they are forced to stop at a traffic light that has literally just turned red. Long minutes pass as it refuses to turn green.

Outside of Wrigley Field, a group of die-hard Cubs fans have attended years of games and only rarely entered the park. Instead they spend the innings on the corner of Waveland and Kenmore in the hopes of catching home runs in what they call the far outfield. Their shared passion has led to lifelong friendships and a community spirit harkening back to the early days of the game. In the fall of 2016, after a 100-year dry spell, the Cubs will play in the World Series and these Ballhawks have a chance they’ve only dreamed of—to catch a World Series home run ball.

Elderly people in our society are often discarded, their stories unheard. We see in the film that as soon as the paint brushes come out, the conversations start. The film asks: What is important at the end of life? And what is the role of memory?

SCOTT COHEN

Jayne Atkinson has enjoyed a long and varied career as an actress, director, and producer. A graduate of Northwestern University and Yale Drama School, she has appeared in regional theatre, off-Broadway, and Broadway, and counts two Drama Desk, an Outer Critics Circle and two Tony nominations to her name. She is best known on television for her long-running roles in 24, Criminal Minds, and the current Netflix original series “House of Cards,” and on film for her roles in FREE WILLY and FREE WILLY 2. Directing and producing credits include benefit productions of “Motherhood Out Loud” and “Can You Hear Me, Baby?,” for WAM Theatre and the Berkshire Festival of Women Writers. After working in regional theatres, including Connecticut’s esteemed Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Jayne appeared in the Manhattan Theatre Club’s off-Broadway production of Bloody Poetry in 1987. That same year, she made her Broadway debut in a revival production of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons.” Broadway credits also include “The Rainmaker” (Tony nomination), “Our Town”, “Enchanted April” (Tony nomination, Drama Desk nomination; Outer Critics Circle Award) and “Blithe Spirit”. She has also appeared offBroadway in a number of productions, including “The Art of Success” (Drama Desk nomination) and “The Skriker” (Drama Desk nomination). Many may recognize Jayne from her film and television roles. Her feature film credits include FREE WILLY, THE VILLAGE and SYRIANA. On television she is known for her guest appearances on the hit series The “X-Files”, “Gossip Girl”, “Chicago Med” and “The Good Wife”, among others. As a recurring character, she has played Karen Hayes on the award-winning “24”, Erin Strauss on “Criminal Minds” and, most recently, Secretary of State Catherine Durant on the Netflix original series “House of Cards”. In addition to acting, Jayne runs Jadana Productions, which specializes in entertainment development. Her other areas of expertise include coaching for professionals in the area of public speaking and project presentation, directing and teaching. In her spare time, she promotes women’s causes, travels, participates in fundraisers and coaches acting students. She is married to actor Michel Gill. Together they have one son.

Scott Cohen is recognizable from his many character portrayals in television, theater and film. A very versatile actor, Cohen has garnered rave reviews for his varied, wide range of performances. Cohen stars opposite Famke Janssen and AnnaSophia Robb in Janet Grillo’s JACK OF THE RED HEARTS, and recently starred in Miles Joris-Peyrafitte’s AS YOU ARE, Sundance ’16 Jury Prize winner, opposite Mary Stuart Masterson and Charlie Heaton and the upcoming Stacey Cochran Film, A+, with Emily Mortimer and Finn Whitrock. Cohen can be seen on Showtime’s BILLIONS opposite Paul Giamatti and the upcoming Jim Carrey’s I’M DYIN’ UP HERE on SHO. Last season, he starred opposite Hope Davis in NBC’s “Allegiance”. Other recent film projects include Tim Blake Nelson’s ANESTHESIA and WHO ARE WE NOW with Emma Roberts. Cohen starred opposite Natalie Portman in Don Roos’ film adaptation of “Love and Other Impossible Pursuits.” He also appeared in the Robert DeNiro film, EVERYBODY’S FINE, in the Nicole Holofcener project, “Please Give,” and Ed Zwick’s film, LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS. Cohen wrapped the third and final season of the USA hit, “Necessary Roughness”, where he played “Nico”, the team’s mysterious fixer. Cohen has a loyal following for his role as Max Medina on “Gilmore Girls”, his portrayal of Wolf in “The 10th Kingdom”, and Harry Denby in his two season arc on NYPD BLUE. His recent and diverse television credits include ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm“, “Elementary”, “Person of Interest”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “The Good Wife”, “Mysteries of Laura” and “Unforgettable”. On stage, Cohen starred in the Broadway comedy “Losing Louie” for the Manhattan Theater Club, in David Ives’ “The Other Woman” and “A Nervous Smile” opposite Amy Brenneman. Cohen’s prolific stage work also counts numerous appearances at the Williamstown Theater Festival, including “The Big Knife” and “La Ronde,” both directed by Joanne Woodward. Recently, Cohen was seen at Bard College in the play “In Audela” written by his wife, Anastasia Traina; he starred in the Playwrights Horizons production,” Three Changes” alongside Dylan McDermott and Maura Tierney; and appeared in the American premiere of Caryl Churchill’s “Drunk Enough To Say I Love You” at the Public Theater with Sam West. As a producer, Mr. Cohen is working to procure rights and guide multiple projects for web based series, Television and film. Along with his acting projects, Cohen is an adjunct professor at CUNY’s Hunter College, also serves on the Columbia County Film Festival Advisory Board, now in its 19th year and is on the Board of the NY International Children’s Film Festival.

GRETCHEN RENNELL

Kent Jones is an internationally recognized writer and filmmaker. He is the author of several books of criticism, has been a regular contributor to Film Comment magazine for many years, and was selected as a 2012 Guggenheim Fellow. He has worked with Martin Scorsese throughout the years on numerous documentaries – he was the co-writer of his survey of Italian cinema, MY VOYAGE TO ITALY, the writer and director of the 2007 film VAL LEWTON: THE MAN IN THE SHADOWS which Scorsese produced and narrated, and the co-writer and director with Scorsese of the Emmy-nominated and Peabody Awardwinning 2010 film, A LETTER TO ELIA. They are currently at work on a follow-up to MY VOYAGE TO ITALY. Jones co-wrote Arnaud Desplechin’s Portrait of Jimmy Picard starring Benicio del Toro and Mathieu Amalric, which is currenly in post-production. He is preparing a feature film, IT NEVER ENTERED MY MIND. Jones was appointed Executive Director of The World Cinema Foundation in 2009, and he currently serves as its Artistic Director. In November of 2012, he was appointed Director of Programming for the New York Film Festival. Kent Jones recently shot is latest film DIANE in January and is in post-production. The film stars Mary Kay Place, Jake Lacey, Deirdre O’Connell, Andrea Martin, Estelle Parsons, Joyce Van Patten.

Gretchen Rennell started her career in the theatre business answering phones for Harold Prince, the Broadway director and producer. It was an exciting time in NYC as he had four shows up and running on Broadway. From there she moved into the world of feature film casting and trained under the sharp eye of Marion Dougherty. She was vicepresident of casting at Paramount Pictures before she moved on to Head of Casting at Walt Disney Pictures in Burbank. Some of the movies cast have been FLASHDANCE, COTTON CLUB, CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD, THE COLOR OF MONEY, AGNES OF GOD, MATINEE, NOTHING TO LOSE, LEAP OF FAITH, THE HORSE WHISPERER and some she would just as soon not mention. Now living in Sheffield, Massachusetts and happy to have landed here.

MARIA NATION

Peter Riegert has been acting, writing, directing and producing for nearly 45 years. His movies include: ANIMAL HOUSE, LOCAL HERO, CROSSING DELANCEY, CHILLY SCENES OF WINTER, COLDBLOODED, UTZ, OSCAR, PASSED AWAY, THE MASK, TRAFFIC, WHITE IRISH DRINKERS, and MIDDLETON and the short films THE WALK and THE RESPONSE, which received the ABA Silver Gavel and was short listed for an Academy nomination for live-action short. Television credits include: “The Sopranos,” “Damages,” “Gypsy,” “Barbarians at the Gate,” “Concealed Enemies,” “Law and Order SVU,” “The Good Wife” and “One Tree Hill.” On Broadway he was in “The Old Neighborhood,” “An American Daughter,” “The Nerd,” and “Dance with Me.” Off Broadway includes: “Sexual Perversity in Chicago,” “The Birthday Party,” “Mountain Language,” “Isn’t It Romantic” and “A Rosen by Any Other Name.” His directorial film debut was the Academy nominated short BY COURIER, followed by his first feature, KING OF THE CORNER, with Isabella Rossellini, Eli Wallach, Rita Moreno, Beverly D’Angelo, Eric Bogosian and Dominic Chianese. He is currently preparing a TV series based on the novels of Cornelia Read and her Madeline Dare character. He’s working on a documentary about the oldest cemetery in Queens, NY, PROSPECT CEMETERY, est. 1668 (see Kickstarter campaign).
