The New England Korean News English Version

ASK DUCKY Send in your questions to askducky@gmail.com! Dear Ducky, The New Yorker? Have you heard of it, my parents get the magazine’s subscriptions, and never thought much of it, until one day my parents took away the comics in the newspaper away from me. I needed a new source, and seeing comics online is just not the same excitement when you just click Next or Forward to view a new comic strip online. As I searched for a new interest, I grabbed one New Yorker, and to my amazement, found hilarious comic boxes. They were more mature than the comics that I had been reading, making them even funnier. Most contained political references, as well as personification of animals and other objects, adding to the conversation. Now, my parents think that I love reading the New Yorker itself, and misunderstand that I am in love with the content of the flimsy book, and not the comics. How can I let them know, without major disappointment? Comic Strip Dear Comic Strip, First, try reading a short article! I read the New Yorker at times myself, and some articles are pretty bearable. Also, if you find yourself asleep in the chair that you started reading the first sentence, try reading one of the movie reviews or short editorials because those are much more reader-based and are exciting. Then, if you are really falling asleep either way, just tell your parents as a joke saying, “Oh, I actually like the comics better” or “Actually, I pay more attention to the comics.” I think that your parents will not be too disappointment, and at worse they will just cross out all of the comics with a big fat sharpie, or a piece of paper. The best way to get out of this is to read the articles and see if your mind cannot change towards the exciting articles. Ducky

to erase, don’t worry, middle school doesn’t matter as much in record then high school will. Therefore, as long as you get back on track now you will be fine. However, what you are missing is the life lessons learned in middle school. The ways of your study methods may not work with study material that is at the high school level. Some study methods take years to develop, which you don’t have because you just flew through middle school, therefore you will be starting at the very beginning of study methods. Besides this reason, there is no reason for you to be so worried about messing it up. Good luck! Ducky Dear Ducky, My family is pretty big with their Korean dramas and so whenever a drama we like has aired; we play it on the big screen using our widescreen television and enjoy it by all sitting on the couches. We all love these nights, but I am from a family of two older sisters and one five-year old brother. My sisters and I are, I think, old enough to watch these dramas but I feel that my five-year old brother is definitely not. Korean dramas are definitely the highlight of half my week, but when I was five, they definitely were not. Is it the way this world is changing for the digital dependence age to come earlier, at five years of age, or should we be more careful about letting my brother watch dramas? Now, even if we don’t let him watch one episode he lashes out and throws a tantrum, ruining our night of dramas. Basically, I think that his addiction to Korean dramas came too early. What can we do? Sincerely, Worried Drama Viewer

Dear Ducky, As I enter high school soon, I am starting to regret the preparation I had set up for myself in my middle school years. I was always going to parties, never studying, and I never committed myself to anything big. I had some sports going for me, but once I had to start working out in my own time, that disappeared. My middle school years never came to a conclusion, and so far my biggest accomplish is in how I’ve had as many absences as I possibly can have in a school year without getting suspended or no credit of middle school. I didn’t have a very proud middle school life, but now that I bought some school supplied for high school, I just noticed how important high school year is and how I cannot mess it up. With my lack of experience, how can I get back on track? Sincerely, Off Track

Dear Worried Drama Viewer, You’re definitely right, that it can be assumed that Korean dramas are addicting! Their ever-changing plot twists are so hooking, but at five years, that may be a problem. I know that as the days go by, at younger ages kids are getting cell phones, personal laptops, iPods, and the works, but this in my view is definitely not good at all. Especially the addicting components of each of these electronics are going to let your five-year old brother not be able to have time for outdoor play, like you probably did when you were younger. It really doesn’t let them enjoy childhood, the way childhood was defined a mere few years back. To keep your brother from not watching K-dramas, introduce him to other fun activities like watching kid movies, cards, action figures, and other childhood items. To get him to like things he may grow out of later, is much better than giving him a chance to like a life-long addiction. Good luck! Ducky

Dear Off Track, Even if middle school was a phase of your life you want

Dear Ducky, I am 16 years old and my brother is 12 years old. When-

ever my little brother has play dates I get super-duper excited and I always want to hang out with them, instead of my own friends. I love playing with them, instead of my grade. My grade is so boring. My parents thought it was good that I was not to mature, but now they are worried because apparently I am really immature. My younger brother thinks I am annoying because I act younger than him, and so now I think, am I abnormal? Sincerely, Immature Confusion Dear Immature Confusion, It may be better to hang out with friends your age if your parents are worried. You may just like hanging out with them because of the feeling of superiority and meaning your parents do not have to be worried that you are young for age. Also, it is not a bad thing if you are a little bit young for your age! Have you ever walked down the aisle of the makeup section in a department store? At least half of the products are age-erasing products. Just think of those products as people who are too mature for the age and would like to become less immature like you. Have fun! Ducky Dear Ducky, Whenever I think about going to college, I am so thrilled but it also means that I am getting older. I started getting skin imperfections and dark circles! I am aging! What to do! Before going to college, there are so many things that have to be done and I never have time to sleep. I am not usually tired, but my face is showing my lack of sleep. Music, sports, camps, school work, SAT, what else? Do colleges really want students to be these overachieved robots that today’s society seems to strive for? Sincerely, Overachieving Robot Dear Overachieving Robot, Your name just describes how you feel! You are still young and if you are still thinking about getting into college first, you are younger than most of the majority on this Earth, if you think about it because if there were only 100 people on this planet and each age was represented once equally, say you are 16, 84 people are still older than you compared to the 15 people who are younger than you. Go sleep after reading this, and be less tired! Also, many people overstress the extracurricular activities. Colleges do not count all the clubs, societies, and other things you have participated in. If they did, everyone would do random things that they are not even interested in and everyone would be, not robots, but just blobs of fat walking from one club to another club. You are going to be fine! Ducky
