MORNING WORKSHOPS
Skill-Builder Track
Introduction to Tableau: Martha Davis & Kevin McCarthy (9:30-10:30,
10:45-11:45)
Many organizations are using analytics and visualization to support their decisionmaking and improve customer and shareholder value. This is a critical skill in many businesses today. This session is geared toward beginners looking to get their feet wet with data visualization and Tableau, an industry-leading visualization tool. The session provides an overview of the tool’s features and a hands-on experience in basic principles for creating meaningful displays of quantitative and qualitative data to facilitate managerial decision-making in the field of business analytics.
Curriculum-Builder Track
K-12 Data Science: Safia Malallah (9:30-10:30)
K-12 data science education is a growing field which introduces the principles of analysis and visualization to students of all ages. This workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to various frameworks and models that promote data science education in the K-12 setting. Participants will improve their data science skills with hands-on activities and start building lessons of their own.
Data Carpentry: Tami Albin (10:45-11:45)
Data Carpentry is a lesson program within The Carpentries which teaches fundamental concepts, skills and tools to researchers who have domain-specific knowledge but lack data science training. Domain-specific workshops tailor the content to the needs of different areas and build new skills on familiar knowledge frameworks. Learn the priniciples which help The Carpentries design flexible, broad, and specific lessons for groups of various backgrounds.

KEYNOTE SPEECH
Lessons from UC Berkeley’s Data Science
Eric Van Dusen (12:00-1:00)
Data Science Education at UC Berkeley starts with student-centered, interdisciplinary curriculum based on an open-source educational stack to deliver interactive computing. Through data centered lessons students learn the skills which form the foundations of computational and inferential thinking. Lessons use computational notebooks to explore practical data sets. Students may then proceed to be involved in tutoring, building curriculum, or research projects. UC Berkeley’s open-source approach also informs its outreach efforts with community colleges and state universities, as well as nationally building a community around Data Science Education.
This session takes place in the DeBruce Center and includes a provided lunch.
Lunch is a build your own taco bar with chicken, pork, steak, and veggie-based proteins. Toppings and extras are labeled with allergens and dietary restrictions.
THIS EVENT WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY:

Community Data Lab Symposium
KU, Wichita State, K-State Students (1:30-3:15)
The flagship program of the Kansas Data Science Consortium is the Community Data Lab which brings together students from various disciplines to hone their data science skills by analyzing real-world information provided by partners. Community Partners are businesses, non-profits, and government organizations who will receive data-based solutions developed in the course. Students are invited to present their work on this semester’s projects. This forum will allow partners and community members to view preliminary results, and engage in conversation with students.
Jatin Talreja (1:30-1:45)
Viaanix is a Community Partner who supports the development of data science by contributing to the Community Data Lab and an organization which has data science at its core. Viaanix is developing an Internet of Things, an interconnected ecosystem, where devices of all types communicate for enhanced efficiency and profitability.
AIS Data Science Competition Winners (1:45)
The Kansas Data Science Consortium and Analytics and Information Student Club co-sponsored a competition for KU School of Business students using data provided by Viaanix. Finalist teams will present their projects and winners will be announced.
POSTER PRESENTATIONS
Poster Passport & Raffle
All attendees will be given a “passport” and will collect stickers for each poster they visit. Full cards can be turned in to KDSC Staff. At the end of the conference, cards will be drawn to win prizes!
