Data Science in Many Contexts (Room 110B)
Hosted by Safia Malallah
Educators from all backgrounds are teaching data science in all kinds of settings. This session will host a conversation to improve curriculum for all via shared insights gleaned from a variety of experiences. Although data science pedagogy tends to focus on bachelor’s and master’s degrees, we encourage participation from K-12 programs, associate’s degrees, and community education settings.
Immediately following the keynote speech, from 12:45 - 1:00, we will show a brief video about women in data science, introduced by Safia Mallalah.
KEYNOTE SPEECH

Data Science for Big Social Media Data
Presented by Jeffrey Girard
Social media is a treasure trove of information for researchers in psychology, business, and other human-focused fields. However, advanced data science techniques are required to harvest and analyze such data. Dr. Jeffrey Girard, professor of psychology at the University of Kansas and co-director of the Kansas Data Science Consortium, will share his recent adventures in leveraging big social media data to advance marketing and emotion sciences.
This will be a 45 minute presentation with 15 minutes for audience questions.
This session includes a catered lunch
Catering is provided by Wichita State University. Offerings will include vegan southwest salads, greek salads, chef salads, vegetarian muffuleta sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches, and ham & swiss sandwiches.
Afternoon sessions will not be hosted in Woolsey Hall. We will transition to these locations after lunch. The walk from Woolsey to Rhatigan takes approximately 20 minutes. If it is more convenient, participants can drive and repark.
AFTERNOON SESSIONS
1:30 - 2:20, Ablah Library
Partner & Small Group Meetings (Invite Only)
These meetings are only for students who worked on data projects for community partners and representatives from the organizations who participated in community data labs this semester. Partners who are not available to attend in person are expected to participate via zoom. Students are expected to bring their own computers and be prepared to briefly present and discuss their data science projects.
Room Assignments
After this session, students will proceed to Rhatigan for the poster presentations. Students who turn in their posters at the welcome table in Woolsey Hall can collect them at the welcome table in Rhatigan.

Education & Industry Connections
The Kansas Data Science Consortium takes pride in facilitating crosspollination between academia and enterprise. All organizations in attendance are invited to share the ways they implement data science, or potential opportunities to utilize data analysis and visualization. Together we will make connections with ongoing research and educational opportunities available in collaboration with those educators present.
Special thanks to our advisory board members: Sergio Salinas Monroy, Sue Abidnnour, Rosemary Radich Yeilding, Fujian Yan, David Cochran, Safia Mallalah, Jeff Girard, William Duncan, Michael Branicky, and Gryffin Eason.

Community Data Lab Symposium
The flagship program of the Kansas Data Science Consortium is the Community Data Lab which brings together students from various disciplines to hone their data science skills by analyzing real-world information provided by partners. Community Partners are businesses, non-profits, and government organizations who will receive data-based solutions developed in the course.
Students from KU, K-State, and Wichita State are invited to present their work on this semester’s projects. This forum will allow partners and community members to view preliminary results, and engage in conversation with students.
Students should contact their instructors for details regarding poster preparation. Posterboards and easels will be provided for display. Students who are travelling from outside Wichita are also encouraged to contact their instructors for assistance coordinating transportation and ride sharing.
