Message from the Head of School.

It has been an exciting week with lots of different enrichment activities going on. I am incredibly proud of the opportunities that we offer our students, above and beyond the curriculum.

During this week, all students participated in MiLife Mental Health Workshops. We recognise that the pressures on young people today can be quite over whelming. The students were shown various coping mechanisms and told where they can seek additional help and support if needed. This is the second year that MiLife has visited the school, their workshops built on their good work from last year. Many students benefit greatly from events like this, as well as the time and care our staff show them on a daily basis.

As a school we have remembered those lost through Remembrance assemblies, the sale of poppies and marking the two minute silence today. It is quite amazing to be in a school as it falls completely silent, I am proud of the respect shown by every single student in our community, as this event was marked today.

Can I remind Year 11 parents that we have the Information Evening on Monday 13th November at 6pm in the School Hall. The theme of the evening is ‘How to support your child through Year 11’; we will also review the transition to 6th Form and subject entry requirements. Their results from the recent assessments will be available for discussion with their individual subject teachers at the Parents’ Evening on Thursday 30th November. Please do remind your child to make their appointments with their subject teachers.

Next week, beginning Monday 20th November is the Year 10 Assessment Week; students should be revising and preparing for these assessments with revision materials supplied by their teachers. Please also note that the Year 9 Exam week, commences on Monday 20th November.

As you are aware the school is in the process of joining a multi-academy trust with The Boswells School, Chelmsford Learning Partnership. There will be a consultation with parents, carers, staff, students and the wider community on this proposal. The governors will be sending out a consultation pack on Monday the 13th November, the consultation period will run until Friday 15th December. Please put a note in your diary that the Parent Consultation Evening will be on Monday 27th November at 6.30pm.

Can I also remind parents of our Uniform Code, full details are further on in this bulletin and I would like to thank you for your support with the school jumpers. Please can I also remind parents that girls/ boys are not allowed to have acrylic nails which are of an unsafe length or brightly coloured. th

Finally, can I also remind parents that the school is closed to students on Friday 24 November.

Dear Parents, Following our successful launch of Show My Homework to all year groups last half term I am writing to thank you for all the positive and helpful comments that many parents have given and clarify our expectations based on that feedback.

The purpose of SMHW is for teachers to set homework in a way that allows parents and carers at home to see what has been set and support their child at home in their learning. It also enables teachers to report to parents that pupils have submitted, or failed to submit, their homework. The expectation is that all homework will be set on SMHW and that teachers will record that homework has been submitted or not within one week of the homework deadline. While we embed this practice and in response to your feedback we will not RAG homework for the present time on SMHW and staff will contact parents directly where there is a pattern of unsatisfactory homework.

This competition runs throughout Europe whereby students write poems to increase the awareness of road safety.

A Life Changed

Today a life changed forever.

But was it really her own fault however?

She was standing there, headphones on quietly humming Peeking out between the parked cars to see what was coming.

Standing on the other side of the road I could see the lorry racing along with its heavy load.

I could have yelled I could have screamed But I just stood there frozen in a dream.

The memory of seeing sheer horror on her face Is a memory that I just want to erase.

The lorry driver screeched his breaks However it was just too late...

There are still a few available places on the Year 7 Residential trip to Boughton Woods.

This is a fantastic and educational opportunity for Year 7 students and has been praised highly by students.

Year 8 Year 8 students attended a Mi Life assembly during period 3 on Thursday 9th November. Students were engaged in practical activities and contributed with excellent enthusiasm around the topic area.

Year 8 Remembrance Assembly Year 8's experienced a very powerful assembly today regarding Remembrance Day which was delivered by Mrs. Cain. The school held a 2 minute silence at 10.58am on Friday. Mr. Hudgell has encouraged all students this week in Year 8 to wear a Poppy, marking respect for those that we will be remembering during this silence.

Year 8 Ski Trip There is a Ski Trip to Italy taking place during February Half Term in 2019. Letters have gone out this week to students interested with deposits required by Friday 17th November.

Year 8 Boys Football On Monday 6th November, the Year 8 boy’s football team played Davenant in the WESSA league campaign and won 3-1. The boys played some excellent football throughout and created chance after chance in the first half but failed to find the net with the score 0-0 at half time. Five minutes after the restart, Leon Harris chipped the keeper from just outside the area to make it 1-0.

After a few substitutions by Roding, a second goal quickly came from a brilliant cross by Charlie Hanshaw, whose work rate was excellent down the right wing all game, and was met

by Onur Yildiz who smashed the ball home from close range. The third came shortly after the second and again it was a well worked goal which was finished superbly by Lewis Choules on the volley into the bottom corner.

Highest Attendance Congratulations to Mr Tisdale and 8T for having the highest attendance over the past 4 weeks. On Friday students will be rewarded with croissants and orange juice to celebrate.

Well done again 8T!

Davenent kept pushing and thanks to some brilliant saves from Finlay Cooper and some last ditch defending from the back four, Roding were keeping them out.

With 5 minutes left a counter attack from Davenant secured their only goal of the game with a shot from the edge of the box into the top corner of Finlay’s goal.

Roding carried on attacking until the final whistle and could and should have added to their 3 goals already scored in the game but all in all it was an excellent team display with some fantastic individual performances as well.

Year 9 Study Skills Day

Exam Week is approaching which begins Monday 20th November. Students will be notified by class teachers when there exams are and the topics they will need to revise.

On Wednesday, 8th November, Year 9 took part in a Study Skills Day which involved students doing a wide range of activities to enhance their teamwork, communication, problem solving and extended writing skills; as well as a session on revision techniques. Students really enjoyed the day and have developed skills which they can apply in lessons and preparation for their upcoming exams.

Year 9 Green Entrepreneurs Europe Project Event Having returned from their trip to the Field Studies Centre in High Beech in September, 14 Year 9 students took their involvement in the Green Entrepreneurs Europe Project one step further and got to work on designing a sustainable product. The groups worked extremely hard after school and in their own time to complete a range of tasks in order to prepare to ‘launch’ their products. The groups independently created prototypes, decided on their social media strategy, made a pricing plan and justified the sustainable credentials of their products!

Monday 6th November saw the 4 groups of Roding Valley Year 9 students pitch their ideas against Year 9 students from Brampton Manor Academy. To begin with, we heard speeches from industry experts about how their companies were improving sustainability in their companies. Experts from Ford talked about their work on electric cars and experts from Glaxo Smith Kline taught us about their recycling of asthma pumps to limit waste wherever possible. Following this, our students presented with confidence and professionalism to the audience!

The following presentations took place: “Socology”, a biodegradable up cycled sock made from synthetic bamboo fabric so that you would never need to throw away socks again!

“The Bubblicious Ball” which serves to replace the water bottle with a small liquid-filled bubble which you drink from and then eat!

Entrepreneurs: Angus Ely, Ayaan Azam and Finley Dickson

Entrepreneurs: Molly Spencer, Fran Salmon, Amy Giltnane and Hannah Grace “Dissolvabottle” which is a water bottle that fully dissolves when placed under boiling or hot water.

You buy 1 bottle and then use 5 different sachets of different concentrates in order to create the flavour you want- before watching your bottle dissolve away!

“Stylo Viride”, a fully biodegradable and recyclable pen which, like a fountain pen, has replaceable cartridges. However, this pen also has recyclable coverings and the quality of a biro!

The winners are then announced and we can proudly say that Socology from Roding Valley High School won and were awarded the price!

Year 10 Trip to the Fantastic Plastic Lecture at Queen Mary University On Tuesday 7 November a group of 20 Year 10 students went to Queen Mary University in Mile End to participate in a Chemistry Plastic Lecture. The afternoon was very interesting, and allowed students to see the endless career opportunities in Science and how new materials are being developed just by using plastics. These include: fake snow, wallpaper TV, an intelligent shopping trolley-where there is no need for a check out and an automatic iron-which am sure many of us would benefit from! The day was enjoyed by students and gave them an insight into University life. It was a pleasure spending the afternoon with them. ''Feedback from the lecture: The lecture was absolutely fantastic and phenomenally conducted. It was very intriguing and I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially when she said to confront the teachers about proving information and disproving some of the misconceptions of science; it really broadened my knowledge!

Thank you for this trip today, it was amazing and well worth it!''

Leighton Brooks ''The lecture was really interesting and engaging because the presentation of it was very visual with the demonstrations witch defiantly made it a lot more fun and easy to remember. I feel like I learnt a lot of cool and new things today about polymers (at type of plastic that isn't solid but isn't liquid) and how they can be used in new products. The entire thing was really thought provoking, opening up a new scope of possibility's and ideas for future inventions and products. I’m so glad that I went and would defiantly go to something like that again''.

Patsy Stow ‘’Twenty year 10 students travelled to Queen Mary’s University in Mile End, to explore plastic in the form of Fantastic Plastic, listening to a fascinating lecture, learning more into the depth of it.

In a lecture theatre, we were taught about the ingredients of plastic, and were shown many different forms that plastic can be found in, opening our minds up to more about the material. The professor proved the point of polymers being a long chain, as she cut through the liquid with scissors, as well as showing us many other experiments. They also taught us about the future uses of plastics, such as contact lenses that allowed you to identify exactly what you are looking at through augmented reality, for example when looking at someone, their names and information would show up!

We were informed with knowledge that fridges could recognise the food you have through tags made from a plastic, and create recipes for what you have bought, also telling you what food you forgot when shopping, from the list you told them.

Washing machines would even recognise what type of clothing was in it, so could put itself on the correct wash for the types of clothing inside.

Overall it was an amazing experience even for the future of university but also to understand how interesting plastic is and helped us get an idea of future jobs that we could have that involves these topics’’.

RVHS Sixth Form Head Boy and Head Girl So far, this year has been incredibly busy for the Sixth Form. Having increased the overall size of the Sixth Form, never before have Year 12 and 13 been more driven to achieve. With that in mind, we as a Sixth Form committee want to ensure that we are supporting the younger students in life at Roding Valley. UCAS season is well underway for the Year 13s; 95% of last year’s cohort applied to university, setting the bar high for the current year group! We have all been given plenty of support with writing our personal statement; listing all the activities that we have participated in over the years at Roding Valley does just show how valuable Challenge and Enrichment opportunities are. Whilst Sixth Form and university applications seem years away for some of our younger students, now is the time to get involved with some of these extracurricular activities. Having led the school productions last year with two of my good friends, we saw how much our peers from younger year groups developed in confidence.

Our school shows ‘Aladdin: The Pantomime’ and ‘Wonderland’ gave 60 young people the opportunity to perform on a stage, many of them for the first time. We even inspired two new Year 12 students to step up and now they are directing Roding Valley’s hit new show, ‘Peter Pan’. You have got to ask yourself what you are going to do to step up. Roding Valley’s ‘fantastic’ Sixth Form does not just expect good grades anymore, we expect to see a student, who has benefitted the wider community and has participated in extracurricular opportunities. There are a plethora of extracurricular activities to get involved within the school; these are listed later in the parent bulletin. Extracurricular clubs are a brilliant way to meet new people and give back to your school, so why not try something new, push yourself and sign up to one of our clubs.

Already one half term down, and both year twelve and thirteen are now adjusted to their new timetables and study plans. So soon in the year, it is lovely to see the sense of unity in the study centre, as everyone starts preparation for the Christmas PPE’s exams. The realities of one final year for year thirteen is sinking in as UCAS applications are being polished up and apprenticeship deadlines are approaching.

This is also a time for year eleven students to begin their sixth form journey as they consider their post sixteen options. Something to consider will be the relationships and experiences you already have with the school. Teachers know you and the ways in which you work, creating a much easier transition period. Our sixth form is also very student led, where we all have the opportunity to lead events, take on roles of responsibility and makes the student voice count.

We may still be a relatively small sixth form, but the opportunities on offer will be above and beyond that of others. It is our smaller numbers which enables your experience to be more personalised; the school does not just focus on helping you to achieve the best grades possible but also promotes your personal development too as you prepare for the wider world of work or university. Roding Valley Sixth Form Open Evening We are delighted that so many of our previous Year 11 students have stayed on to study for their A Levels here, taking advantage of the positive working relationships that they have developed with staff over the years.

Roding Valley High School enjoys a good reputation within the local community and it is our ambition that we will become the school of choice for students, parents and staff in the area in the years to come. As Part Epping Forest District 6 (EFD6) Sixth Form Consortium, which includes; Roding Valley High School, Debden Park High School and Epping St John's, we continue to go from strength to strength. Nearly 1,000 A-Levels and BTEC qualifications were taken across EFD6 this summer.

The Consortium has announced an A-Level success rate of 99 per cent, above national averages, with over 95% of students making applications to University, and many students taking up places at prestigious Universities across the country including Oxford, Cambridge and Durham. Whether you decide, University, Apprenticeship, employment or overseas study at Sixth Form our highly professional staff are dedicated to ensuring that every student realises their full potential. All students are challenged to make excellent progress and our no excuses culture ensures that all students are driven to achieve their best.

Supporting Student Achievement Since the start of the autumn term we have carried out focused strategies to support the raising of student achievement.

Since September, we have asked staff to enter Attitude to Learning Grades, followed up with a Parental Concern Evening for under performers. We have carried out systematic learning walks, a 6th form student voice survey, followed by lesson observations. Most recently we have asked staff to enter a current attainment grade.

Our most recent data suggests our focused strategies are having a positive impact.

In the lead up to Christmas will see Year 12 and 13’s taking their PPE’s. It is important all students take these seriously. I have included some key information to support students and parents on the next page. The PPE timetables will be released to students/ parents next week, and the countdown is on. PPE’s start, week beginning Monday 11th December.

Tips for Preparing Effectively for the PPE Examinations PPE’s (Preparation for Public Exam) are the pre-exams that students face before their summer exams. The purpose of these exams is to prepare students for the final exams. If you do well in your PPE examinations, then there are better chances of your excelling in the summer exams as well.

How to Relieve Stress Students usually get stressed before their exams which affects their performance. Know that PPE’s Examinations are not your final exams. These are just to help you prepare for your real exams. So take these exams as a part of the preparations. So, relieve the stress and help students pay complete attention towards their studies. This way they will be in a better position to maintain a focus, and get better scores even in the summer.

Study on a Daily Basis Make studying daily as a habit. It is seen that most of the students don’t prepare on time and leave things till the last moment and then they face problems when they start their preparations a few days before their exams. They should be re-organising folders, attending revision sessions, making independent sessions count in school, and carrying out a significant amount of additional work at home.

Prepare a Proper Schedule Now this is something very important that all students must need to do. Preparing a schedule will help students in studying or covering the course in a disciplined manner. Students should make a list of all the chapters that they need to cover.

Calculate how much time they have left in their preparation. Set time for each chapter on the basis of the time left. If they have more days, then study at least two chapters daily, and if they have less time then cover as many chapters as you can in a day. In this way, they will also get time for revision.

Discuss your Problems If you have any kind of problem or confusion regarding your studies, then discuss it with subject teachers. Many teachers are now A-level examiners.

Do Not Panic Help students to stay calm so that they can prepare for the PPE’s with a relaxed mind.

This week the Year 9 and Under 16 Netball Team played their Borough fixture against Debden Park at home.

Unfortunately the U16 lost out; however the Year 9 team won 24-9.

Year 7 Football Playing against a very strong team from St. Bonaventure’s in Newham, the year 7 boys found themselves 2-0 behind at half time for the first. A stirring second half performance saw the boys pull one back within 5 minutes of the re-start, equalise through a penalty with 3 minutes to go and score a winner with the last kick of the game!

They have now scored an amazing 39 goals in 5 matches!!

6th Form Football Result: Wednesday 8th November - 2nd Rd Division 3 Cup Roding Valley 10 - 1 Palmers 3 Our 1st game in a month started sluggish & slow with RVHS conceding & going 1-0 down. However, the response from Roding was electric going in to half time with a 5-1 lead. The 2nd half was the most dominant display of the season so far, adding another 5 goals to the total and not allowing the opposition a chance on target all half. We now advance into the Quarter Finals with an Away trip to Colchester SFC 2 on Wednesday 6th December.

Next game is against Brampton Manor at Home9th nextNovember Wednesday.

The opening game of the U16s WESSA District basketball league do not disappoint in entertainment value.

A high scoring affair which does not reflect the performance and application from Roding Valley. A high work rate, togetherness and a never die attitude allowed Roding to compete throughout with a higher possession rate & chance created.

Highest points scorer was Glen Zarych with 10 points and MVP goes to Cengizhan Takbasti for a superb & much improved display.

The team can take a lot of positive from this display leading into our next fixture against Davenant Foundation School with a date TBC. 15 | Page

Write Up Business Awards 2017 On Thursday 9th November, the YES Partnership held their ‘Investors in Young People Business Awards’ at Waltham Abbey Marriott Hotel. Roding Valley High School nominated 3 local employers in recognition of their continued support for the students at Roding Valley as well as three students. One student was nominated for his outstanding achievement in the work place and the other two students for their contribution and commitment to school life.

All three companies continually support the staff and students of Roding Valley; they regularly attend the Careers Fair, Business Breakfast and Mock Interview Day. They offer valuable advice and guidance to our students to prepare them for the world of work

Students: Matthew Tinker: Contribution and commitment Matthew is a truly outstanding and inspirational student who consistently gives up his time for his school and students. He certainly goes above and beyond and is so very generous with his time for younger students. He is most definitely deserved of this award and we wish him every success in his future career

Grace Cain: Contribution and commitment Grace makes a massive contribution to the school council and has facilitated the voice of other students across the school. Grace has been a key player in fundraising for our chosen charity Beyond Ourselves in Zambia and worked tirelessly raising funds that has enabled a group of student to travel to Zambia. Grace contributes to all school productions she is currently organising rehearsals and auditions for the school show. She is an excellent role model and is always prepared to go the extra mile and whilst still keeping up with school work and school life.

Sonny Ray: Nominated by Galliard Homes for his outstanding achievements in the work place Sonny showed real commitment and willingness to want to learn no matter what task he was set. I could see he had a common sense approach to his thought process that he applied to tasks which is a real benefit to this industry. He was punctual well-presented and polite and we would have no problem recommending him to a future employer.’

Student Absence If your child is unable to attend School for any reason please report their absence by phoning the school number by 9.30am at the latest, you must also ring in each day of your child’s absence.

020 8508 1173 On their return to School please ensure your child brings with them a letter or medical evidence if requested explaining the reason for the absence for our records.

Medical Appointments Please make sure you make any medical or dental appointments outside of school time. If this is not possible, then please try to ensure that your child attends school before and/or after their appointment.

Holidays in Term Time It is not school policy to authorise any holidays during term time except in exceptional circumstances. A ‘Leave of Absence’ form must be completed (these are available at Student Reception) should you require leave for your child. A letter detailing your exceptional circumstances should accompany it.

Please be aware if the absence is not authorised and the holiday is taken, the case may be referred to the Education Welfare Service, who may issue a Penalty Notice for £120 (or £60 if paid within 21 days) to each parent for each child taken out of school.

School Communications We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively.

We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App. MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school.

We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example Parent Pay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place.

You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us.

The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left.

RVHS Recruitment School Caretaker Required Roding Valley High School is currently looking to recruit We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, conscientious and self-motivated person who would like to provide a key role in maintaining our school site, to ensure a welcoming and safe environment for the whole school community.

This is a permanent contract for 37hrs per week, 52 weeks per year with 22 days paid holiday entitlement plus bank holidays Shift pattern to include one day at the weekend.

EXAMINATION INVIGILATORS REQUIRED Roding Valley High School is currently looking to expand our team of Invigilators for the forthcoming and subsequent examination sessions and is looking for efficient, flexible and well organised people. The role involves overseeing and supervising examinations and ensuring Awarding Bodies guidelines and regulations are followed.

There are also internally scheduled examinations held throughout the school year where you will be required. Hours will be on a varied/ad-hoc basis, held throughout a school day. We do ask that you can commit to working 8-10 hours (per week if required) during exam periods. There will be appropriate training for successful candidates.
