Sigmar Polke (Olesnica, 1941-Köln, 2010) wordt wel een moderne alchemist genoemd: hij is vooral bekend geworden om zijn schilderijen, waarin hij allerlei materialen zoals verven, lakken, harsen en chemicaliën met elkaar mengt en de chemische reacties die zo ontstaan het resultaat laat bepalen.

Ook in zijn fotografie, waarop hij zich met name in de jaren zeventig concentreert, experimenteert hij met chemische processen waarvan de uitkomst telkens verschillend en onvoorspelbaar is.

Polke neemt de foto’s voor de serie São Paulo (1975) in een gay bar in São Paulo, waar hij terechtkomt omdat hij moet schuilen voor een onweersbui. De mannen in de bar poseren voor zijn lens. Tijdens het afdrukken van de serie experimenteert hij met het fotografisch procedé: hij mengt de chemische substanties van ontwikkelvloeistof en fixeer door elkaar en vouwt het dunne fotopapier dubbel zodat het past in de ontwikkelbak. De vloeistoffen worden hierdoor niet gelijkmatig over het papier verdeeld, met onregelmatige en vlekkerige afdrukken tot gevolg.

In de serie Ohne Titel (Fliegenpilz) (1975) staat de vliegenzwam centraal, voor Polke een belangrijk motief vanwege zijn geestverruimende werking.

Onderwerp van Fliegenpilz is een oud ritueel van de inheemse volkeren van de Great Plains, waarin de magische paddenstoel wordt vereerd. Voor de serie fotografeert hij afbeeldingen uit etnografische boeken en print deze op hetzelfde papier over elkaar heen.

Hoewel Polke voor elke foto drie tot vijf dezelfde afbeeldingen gebruikt, is door de verschillende chemische bewerkingen ieder beeld uniek.

De fotoseries van Sigmar Polke in de collectie van het Kröller-Müller Museum zijn afkomstig uit de collectie Visser. Vormgever en kunstverzamelaar Martin Visser was in het bijzonder geïnteresseerd in Polkes fotografische werk omdat dit volgens hem het dichtst bij de kunstenaar zelf stond.

Sigmar Polke (Olesnica, 1941-Cologne, 2010) has been called a modern alchemist: he is best known for his paintings, in which he mixes together all kinds of materials, such as paints, lacquers, resins and chemicals, and allows the results to be determined by the ensuing chemical reactions. In his photography, which he mainly concentrated on in the 1970s, he also experiments with chemical processes, the outcome of which is always different and unpredictable.

For the series São Paulo (1975), Polke takes the photographs in a gay bar in São Paulo, where he ends up while sheltering from a thunderstorm. The men in the bar pose for his camera. While printing the series, he experiments with the photographic process: mixing the chemicals of the developing solution and fixative together and folding the thin photographic paper in half so that it fits in the developing tray. Due to this, the liquids are not evenly distributed across the paper, which results in irregular and blotchy prints.

The series Untitled (fly agaric) (1975) revolves around the fly agaric toadstool, an important theme for Polke due to its mind-expanding effects. The subject of fly agaric is an ancient ritual of the Native Americans of the Great Plains, in which the magic mushroom is worshipped. For the series, he photographs images from ethnographic books and prints them on top of each other on the same paper. Although Polke uses three to five similar images for each photograph, they are all unique due to the different chemical reactions.

Sigmar Polke’s photographic series in the collection of the Kröller-Müller Museum are from the Visser collection.

Designer and art collector Martin Visser was particularly interested in Polke’s photographic work because, in his opinion, this was the closest to the artist himself.
