YEAR 9 CAMP URBAN EXPERIENCE

During the CUE programme, the City of Melbourne becomes the classroom. On camp, students will be involved in a variety of activities that support and enrich the curriculum, add to their life skills, and familiarise them with Melbourne’s CBD and public transport.

Students have a broad range of activities to select from for sessions 1 and 2 on Tuesday, Session 2 on Wednesday, and the three evening sessions. These activities are linked to ...maths, humanities ....... The cost of these activities depends on the students’ selections.

Students visit a world class High Performance Centre and see elite Australian athletes at work. It is also an opportunity to immerse themselves in the “Be Fit. Be Well” program. However, it needs to be noted that a modest amount of physical activity and testing is involved.

The Salvos’ School Tour is an experiential excursion where students learn about the issues that contribute to youth homelessness and the work of The Salvation Army.

Students are introduced to the role of forensic science in police investigations. Students will learn about different scientific techniques commonly used to investigate and solve crimes. They will discuss several Australian cases where particular forensic techniques were crucial to the police investigation.

Melbourne is at the forefront of games development in Australia. Since opening here in 2004, AIE has cemented its place within the local games and visual production industry as the place where studios go when looking for talented artists and programmers. Students will be taken on a tour of AIE and then participate in a hands-on practical design session.

VIS elite athletes escort students through the high performance and recovery areas and then choose from a variety of electives - nutrition, sport science, sports media, sport psychology or fitness regimes. Approximate cost $1115.00

A workshop explores the causes, effects and stereotypes of youth homelessness. This is followed by a 40-minute guided walking city tour to visit locations where people “sleep rough”. The guide will discuss real stories and real people, whilst addressing the issues homeless people face on a nightly basis.

Students will then examine their own crime scene and be asked to examine a murder scene, where the body of a young man has been found partially buried in a bush location.

Living Library workshop (State Library of Victoria) A living library is more than just books on shelves – it is a unique space where everyone is welcome to unearth stories, raise questions, find inspiration and create ideas. Students will go on an engaging multimodal trail around the Library’s galleries and exhibition spaces to gain an understanding of the significance of the Library’s role in collecting and preserving Victoria’s history. During the workshop, students will create a memento of their visit to the Library by producing an eBook inspired by the discoveries they make during the tour. Approximate cost $8.00

TUESDAY SESSION 2: MATHEMATICS OR HUMANITIES Made by Maths app: Swanston Street walk This mathematical challenge features buildings and architecture that were constructed with mathematics at the forefront of the architect/designers’ minds. Students will explore Pythagoras, right angle triangles, geometric patterns, Roman numerals and fractions of circles. Included in camp price

Shrine of Remembrance Students will gain insights into the experiences of Australian soldiers and nurses during the Great War. This tour includes looking at uniforms and everyday equipment to enable students to empathise with soldiers and nurses and to understand what life would have been like 100 years ago, particularly for young Victorians. This tour examines the legend of ANZAC, the values it embodies and its contemporary relevance to ideas of national identity. Students will also view images and original artefacts in the Galleries of Remembrance and Sanctuary in order to understand the past. FREE

Port of Melbourne Cruise: Port, Docklands and Garden Cruise This cruise gives students the opportunity to see two totally different perspectives of Melbourne. The cruise will head upstream past Federation Square, The Royal Botanic Gardens, The Governor’s residence, National Tennis Centre, The Glasshouse, Olympic Park and Herring Island before heading downstream to pass the city centre and discover routes of early settlers, now one of the busiest trading ports in the Southern Hemisphere. The historic Victoria Docks will give students a glimpse into Melbourne’s maritime heritage and the boom of the gold rush era. Points of interest include Southgate Arts & Leisure Precinct; Crown Entertainment Complex,

The World Congress Centre & Trade Centre, Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, 19th Century sailing ship Polly Woodside, Shipping Channels & dock areas, Bolte Bridge and Westgate Bridge. On this cruise students will be undertaking a study of land use along the Yarra; linking to their study of Geographies of Interconnections. Approximate cost $13.00-15.00 Early Melbourne Walking Tour Student will learn about

the early explorers and founding settlers on the Birrarung or Yarra Yarra River and the events that led to settlement in defiance of British law. During the tour students visit locations that tell stories of the colonial period such as settlement and explorer locations, Aboriginal sites, shipping and trade, the gold rush, Eureka stockade and Marvellous Melbourne. Students will also discover the impact of settlers on the Indigenous people of the Kulin Nation. Approximate cost $13.00-15.00

Melbourne Geography Walking Tour

$13.00-15.00

This tour commences and finishing at Federation Square and explores built structures, the Yarra River and Birrarung Marr looking at the human and geographic characteristics of central Melbourne. Students will look at how Melbourne places since settlement to today have been important to particular people, their culture and their relationship with land. This tour examines how Melbourne’s natural features, vegetation and differing climates were utilised and sustained by Indigenous people and later settlers and contemporary Melbournians over time and how they have valued the land in different ways. Students will select from a special menu for school groups which consists of appetizers, a choice of two main meals and two desserts. All soft drinks are included. Approximate cost $40.00-45.00

The historic and iconic Melbourne General Cemetery is the final resting place of many notable Victorians, including Australia’s longest serving Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, famous author Marcus Clarke, legendary billiards player Walter Lindrum, the famous Princess Theatre ghost Federici and the memorial to ill-fated explorers Burke and Wills. MGC guides will introduce students to the cemetery’s who’s who, while providing fascinating insights into one of Australia’s most historically significant cemeteries.

Historic crimes can reveal an enormous amount about the social context, culture and values of our society. It is also important for our society not to forget that many victims of crime are yet to achieve justice. Students will investigate crimes from Early Melbourne, Squizzy Taylor, Underbelly and the present day. The crimes explored are varied: humorous, historic, intriguing, minor and deadly serious. The tour starts at Federation Square and ends in Bourke Street travelling via Swanston, Collins, Spring and Bourke streets and through Chinatown.

Under staff supervision, students will experience Melbourne’s largest and best array of global street food, artisan and vintage stall holders. There will be a chance to watch one of three live music performances and wander around the historic Market sheds.
