FROM THE HEADMASTER Tonight you will experience a showcase of hard work and talent as our students perform for their families, friends and the wider community. Our music students have a range of skill levels and musical aspirations, but the thing that they collectively share is expert guidance from our highly qualified and passionate Music staff, who strive to develop in every child a deep love of music in all its forms. Experiential learning is key to providing the tangible improvement in the craft of making music that every music student at Girton benefits from, with 30 instrumental and vocal ensemble groups practising and performing together regularly. Combined with over 650 instrumental and vocal lessons conducted each week at the school, we have one of the largest and finest regional music programs in the country. The Music Department at Girton provides a three-pronged approach to music that involves individual tuition, ensemble participation and classroom education. It is the ensemble performances, like those you will see tonight, from which memories are made. Students make friends, share the joy of making music together and learn from one another. Performing in an ensemble teaches students to learn to listen and to communicate non-verbally with each other to create music as a team, and this is where the reward and the magic happens. The musicians on stage tonight understand that the joy of learning is in giving back what they have learned to their friends, their family, their teachers and their community. On behalf of the performers tonight, I thank all those who have supported children in their musical pursuits and hope that you enjoy the creative self-expression of our wonderful music students.

FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL Welcome to our Junior School musical showcase event of the year. At Girton Grammar Junior School we are immensely proud of the breadth of musical opportunities that are provided to our students. Our choirs and instrumental ensembles have been very successful in the various competitions and eisteddfods in which they have competed this year. Hours of individual practice, group rehearsal and classroom tuition have been undertaken by each of our performers so that they can perform at their best. Under the strong leadership of our Head of Junior School Music, Mrs Laura Dusseljee, our students have opportunities to excel in individual and group performances. In addition to studying general musical theory within their individual class groups, every student who is enrolled with us from the Preparatory year has the opportunity to study strings, sing in various choirs and play in the Junior School Band. Our Year Two Strings programme and our Year Five/Six Band programme provide an opportunity for all students to learn a musical instrument. Many of our students will also elect to learn an additional instrument or play in one of the smaller ensemble groups.

4

Music provides our students with another way to express themselves. It instils individual discipline, teamwork and cooperation and opportunities for personal growth through performing to an audience. We are certainly proud of our programme and the achievements of our students. We trust that you will share in our pride as you enjoy the items presented tonight.

The Friends of Performing Arts parent group combines the energy, enthusiasm, talent and time of the previous Friends of Music and Friends of Drama groups, reflecting the growth in Performing Arts at Girton Grammar over the last decade. This growth is partially owing to the School’s wonderful Performing Arts Building, with the “Black Box” being the jewel in the theatrical crown, and also because of the close and professional working relationship between the Music and Drama Departments at the school. Girton Grammar fosters an appreciation of Art, Music and Drama from a young age, starting in the Junior School where every child learns a string instrument and is part of a choir.

Two thirds of Girton students, from Prep to Year 12 currently participate in Performing Arts, with over 100 performances within the school and the broader community every year, making the school a key player in the Bendigo Arts scene. The primary role of the Friends of Performing Arts group is fundraising, to support public performances and to continue to offer facilities of a high standard to all students. Interested parents, guardians and friends are welcome to become part of this exciting group by contacting Girton’s Performing Arts Administrator on (03) 5441 3114.

FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL MUSIC Making music in an ensemble can be likened to being part of a community. How we behave, what we do, and the manner in which we do it all impact on the other members. When we are part of an ensemble it is the whole that is greater than the parts, but the skills, contribution and actions of the parts affect the whole. Performing in an ensemble teaches leadership, discipline and focus and allows us to be part of something greater than ourselves. While we may spend many hours practising and mastering our own instrument, our best memories of making music are always of making music with others. Many hours have gone into preparing for tonight’s concert; students have been rehearsing hard in order to not only play or sing the correct notes but to produce the sound at the right time and with all elements of music like tempo, tone and dynamics accurately delivered.

8

It is no secret that the study of music has a significant beneficial impact on the development of intellect, self-esteem and discipline. Students also learn how to interpret the conductor’s gesture and style of silent communication as well as performance etiquette. Tonight we come together to celebrate the results of the many hours of study over the course of the first two terms and to enjoy the efforts of students. I invite you to sit back and enjoy the 2018 Ensembles Concert.
