FOREVER YOUNG BENDIGO’S CHOIR LIKE NO OTHER

Dream

FROM THE DIRECTOR community event. It is hugely gratifying to see young people grow their understanding of the unique contribution that the elders in our community can make to the lives of those around them.

The Forever Young Rock Choir is now in its eighth year. In a world where things can change in the blink of an eye and there seems to be an incessant need to prove the worth of something in order for it to endure, it feels like a momentous achievement to still be singing strong.

grow and voices bloom. Our weekly rehearsals are something we all look forward to and I know that for many choir members it is the highlight of their week, which is unsurprising given the wonderfully therapeutic benefits of singing. Add friends to the mix and we all enjoy a little bit of magic each week.

Yet here we are, with more than 80 of Bendigo’s most enthusiastic Senior Citizens, not only enduring but flourishing, and sounding better than ever.

This year, the choir will sing alongside Kate Ceberano who is one of Australia’s most successful and popular singers. The students in the Girton Grammar String Orchestra and Jazz Band, who will support the choir, are a delight to work with and I thank them for their dedication to this important

It has been my joy and privilege to lead this wonderful community choir since its inception and to see friendships

DEREK GUILLE Derek Guille carved out a 28 year career as a broadcaster, including 25 years at the ABC. With his distinctively personable style and good humour, Derek presented the 774 and Local Radio Evening Program for nine years. While his programs had a focus on music and culture, Derek also created a sense of community via talkback. His audience became a regular part of the program, expressing positions and opinions through conversation in a trusted

and respectful environment and his outside broadcasts during the Black Saturday bushfires set a benchmark in emergency broadcasting. Since leaving the ABC Derek works as a Master of Ceremonies, Guest Speaker and Narrator. We warmly welcome Derek back as the Master of Ceremonies at Forever Young’s “Dream” concert.

My heartfelt thanks to the many, many people who make the annual Forever Young concert possible, not least our ‘roadie’, Marg Keech, who this year has aptly been awarded an Order of Australia Medal for service to the community of Bendigo. Many Girton Grammar staff members avail themselves of a variety of tasks to support the choir from marketing and arranging music to the provision of sound, light and stage expertise. Several very talented Girton Grammar Music teachers have supported the student musicians who will perform tonight and I thank each one of you. Community choirs have always intrigued me. Sometimes I think that if everyone were to join a choir and savour the feeling of collective effort, the world would be a better place. So tonight, sit back and enjoy this wonderful group of energetic older Australians as they come together in song and friendship and take pleasure from being a part of something so positive. K ATE CEBERANO Multi ARIA award winning artist, Kate Ceberano, has been in the business for over 35 years - writing and performing both jazz and pop music - with seven Platinum and seven Gold albums to her name. Kate first came to prominence in the mid-80’s as a 15 year old sensation fronting pop funk band, I’m Talking. Five consecutive hit singles and a Platinum debut album, Bear Witness, led to a swag of awards including Best New Talent at the 1984 Countdown Awards, followed up by Best Female Artist in the ‘85 and ‘86 Countdown Awards. After launching her solo career, Kate took out Best Female Artist at the ‘88 and ‘89 ARIA awards with her triple Platinum album, Brave, nominated as ARIA Album of the Year.

Kate is widely respected across multiple industries of film, television and music. In recent times, she has been celebrated in her three year tenure as Artistic Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, transforming it into one of the most successful festivals in the country. She is now co- directing the Live Love Life Festival with renowned artist, David Bromley. The festival will take place in Daylesford from 14-18 November 2018. Her work, her craft and her vision are now imbued in our collective DNA. Kate Ceberano is a bone fide national treasure, possessing one of the great voices of her generation. Long may she run.

In 1992, Kate hit the stage to perform the role of Mary in Jesus Christ Superstar. The show’s star-studded cast, which included John Farnham, toured nationally, performing over 80 arena shows - the album being the biggest hit of the year earning four times platinum status. Ceberano has barely drawn breath since, racking up 25 albums over 35 years to be the most prolific Australian female recording artist of this era. In 2014, Ceberano became the first - and only - Australian woman to be inducted into the Australian Songwriters’ Association (ASA) Hall of Fame. 2016 saw Kate on the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, becoming a member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the performing arts and charitable organisations.
