Welcome How do you accept other people whose foundation is entirely different to your own? On behalf of Bendigo Theatre Company, I would like to warmly welcome you to our production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, a show that asks an important question: how do you accept other people whose foundation is entirely different to your own? The way we respond to this question is equally as important today in 2018 as it was upon the show’s release in 1964. We are living in a time where things are complicated, fear is creeping in, and we need to love harder. We are all human, we all want and need the same things. I hope our production makes you reflect on the current state of affairs, maybe you will even start seeing them in a different light. That is the true power of theatre, its ability to engender empathy; to pose questions. A special thank you must be extended to our incredible creative team, Bevan Madden, Kristie Woodward, Emily Calder and Anita Scott, as well as the dedicated production team ably led by Kyrilee Bodin. The expertise and dedication given by this group of people is unparalleled, thank you.

I would like to make a special mention to my fellow committee members (both incoming, and outgoing): Kristen Beever, Barbara Billings, Colin Brown, Conor Cunningham, Maureen Fleiner, Jordan French, Loretta KingstonBrown, Casey Lodge, Keva Lloyd, Bevan Madden, Julie McGregor, John Murray, Rebecca O’Sullivan, Stania Tresize, Vern Wall, Ken Wells and Mary White. The committee’s work is not always seen by everyone, but it is integral to the company’s success. This group of individuals has overseen a huge shift in the operation of our company as we continuously strive to be more professional, efficient, and engaging. I thank them for their determination and passion; they truly embody the nature of community theatre. Finally, we would like to thank you, our audience for your continued support and patronage – it is you, who allow us to do what we do. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. Abe Watson President

Director's notes “All the world’s a stage…”

William Shakespeare

I have always believed that theatre acts as a mirror held up to our everyday lives, exposing the unspoken truths of our world and forcing us to confront them. This isn’t easy, and nor should it be. Fiddler on the Roof has embodied these ideas since its debut 1964. The central themes of Love, Loss, Loyalty and Exodus are still so important in today’s society and are perhaps even more relevant in our increasingly interconnected world. The diaspora of the Jewish community depicted here reflects what is seen today in places around the globe such as Syria and Malaysia. It has been an absolute pleasure and a huge honour to be able to bring to you our interpretation of Fiddler on the Roof. Working with this incredible and amazingly talented group of people over the last 15 weeks has been a privilege and I would like to thank them for their talent and abilities, their hard work, their dedication and most importantly, for their friendship. After exploring the deep and rich characters created by Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich (written under the pen name Sholem Aleichem), we all feel a part of Tevye’s family and a part of Anatevka. We hope you’ll join us there today. To the cast, thank you for your patience and commitment. It may have been slow going or tedious at times, but it is all worth it. Your ability has never failed to leave me speechless. To the production team, thank you for your boundless expertise. This show looks, sounds and feels amazing, and that is all thanks to you.

To Kyrilee and the BTC Committee, thank you for your trust and belief in me and for your endless support. As a newcomer to directing, this opportunity has been once-ina-lifetime and nothing short of incredible. The company is like a family to me, even though I’ve only been a part of it for 18 months. A culture like that is no accident. And finally, to you, reading this now. Thank you for supporting local theatre. Thank you for helping us do what we love. Thank you for dropping off, picking up, painting, drilling, sawing, lifting, sitting, watching, crying, laughing. Thank you for being here with us and thank you for letting us show you our creation. We hope you enjoy the show. Bevan Madden

SALLY HYETT-LONG

Golde A love of music, dance, and an early introduction to local and international theatre led Sally to her first role in Cinderella with BTC in 1989. Since then her roles with local theatre have included Guinevere in Camelot, Laurey in Oklahoma!, Baroness in The Sound of Music, Glinda in The Wizard of Oz, Carrie in Carousel, Fiona in Brigadoon, Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls, and supporting roles in The Boy from Oz, Les Misérables, Cats, and Evita. Born in Bendigo Sally attended Girton College and MLC Kew, where her interest in the performing arts was nurtured by her involvement in school productions and choirs. She graduated from the University of Melbourne with a degree of teaching (Early Childhood) and her subsequent career in education has allowed her to pass on her love of music, theatre and dance to children. She has also lived in the UK and performed in the UK and France. Sally is passionate about the importance of music in family, education and in daily life. She is very appreciative of the support she receives from her five children, her extended family and her colleagues and friends.

Kristen’s last stage role was Lumiere in Nexus’ production of Beauty and the Beast in 2010. She began an internship at Nexus Bendigo Youth Theatre in 2011, and since then has worked as an acting coach, assistant director, leadership coordinator, stage manager and director over the past 7 years. In 2015 she graduated from university and directed and performed in Nexus’s Alumni’s opening production of Our Town. This is Georgia’s third production with Bendigo Theatre Company, previously performing in Tribe Youth Theatre’s Wyrd Sisters and the BTC production of Beauty and the Beast: The Pantomime, both in 2018. She is extremely excited to be playing the role of Chava, who arguably has one of the most heartbreaking stories in the show, but aside from all the tears and turmoil on stage, off stage it’s quite the opposite, and she has loved every second of rehearsing alongside such an incredibly talented, energetic and committed cast.

Some fun facts about Katie would include that she is an avid dog lover and Candy Crush addict, who loves to dance and party.

ADELINE JOHNSTON (15)

Claire’s first love has always been dance. Her first theatre performance was as Tzeitel in Fiddler On The Roof in 1997 with Echuca Musical Theatre Company. It was her first of 13 shows with EMTC, as a performer, director and choreographer. Career highlights include playing the Wicked Witch in The Wizard Of Oz, Katie Brown in Calamity Jane and a student/ whore in Les Misérables, where she was choreographer/assistant director, and where she met her husband to be, Dan.

Zeljko wrote and produced a 12 episode sitcom series, which can be viewed on his YouTube channel (just Google Zeljko Vanis). Since coming to Bendigo, he has performed with BTC and Synchronicity. He is currently writing a screenplay for a movie, which will be pitched to the major American film companies. Zeljko is extremely proud to be back on stage at BTC in the magnificent production of Fiddler on the Roof.

Mason graduated from Victory Christian College last year where he studied VCE Drama. He learned dance with MarShere Dance Studios (2013-17), received vocal tuition from Emily Bibby (2016-17), and was a member of the Australian Youth Choir (2006-09). (NexusBYT, 2016), the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera (NexusBYT, 2017), the Beast in Beauty and the Beast – The Pantomime (BTC, 2018).

Max is in year 11 at Bendigo Senior Secondary College. He has loved acting ever since his debut role as Santa in his kindergarten Christmas play and has loved the violin ever since he picked it up at the age of 12. The opportunity to combine Max’s two biggest passions was so exciting and he has had a blast in Fiddler on the Roof.

SEAMUS ALLAN (17)

LORETTA KINGSTON-BROWN

Fyedka

Shaindel

The Russian Soldier, Fyedka is a departure from what Seamus has done in the past, but he has enjoyed every moment of exploring the history behind the character. Fiddler on the Roof is a timeless show, with themes extremely relevant to today’s audience, and Seamus hopes you enjoy the show as much as we have enjoyed creating it!

Loretta has a soft spot for the song ‘Chavaleh’, a captivating song about a little bird leaving the nest, or a daughter leaving her family; it is about reflecting back on happy times and wishing things wouldn’t change so quickly. Loretta is very grateful for all the opportunities that Bendigo Theatre Company has offered her and her family.

Fiddler on the Roof sees Seamus chalk up five shows with BTC, having performed in the TENx10 2017 short play anthology, One Man, Two Guvnors, Amos Scudder in Barnum, and Jagger Fleming in the TENx10 2018 showcase. Seamus also recently had his directorial debut in the annual TENx10 season and loved gaining an insight to a different side of theatre.

When Loretta was in Grade 6, she was invited to accompany a friend’s family on a road trip to Alice Springs. She sat in the back of the car, between her friend and her friend’s brother, so they wouldn’t fight and they listened to the Les Misérables soundtrack all the way to Central Australia. It was an incredible adventure that sparked a love of musical theatre.

Kristie spends every waking hour immersed in musical performances, so it came as no surprise to her family when she took on another major musical this year. Kristie coaches over 25 students from the Bendigo area in their weekly singing lessons and loves nothing more than watching as they shine on the stage. Kristie is in demand herself as a soloist at public events and special ceremonies. Her theatre performances include: Jesus Christ Superstar and Chess (CTProductions, now known as Apollo Productions), Mary Poppins (Bendigo Theatre Company) and The Pied Piper of Hamelin and The Magic Pudding (Victorian Opera). A career highlight was performing in the role of Marion Woolnough in BTC’s Boy from Oz (2016). Kristie’s weekly schedule is filled with rehearsals, as she takes part in small and large vocal ensembles including Bendigo’s Apollo Chorus and the Gisborne Singers. As a performer, Kristie was thrilled to sing at Carnegie Hall, New York City in January 2017. Working as a teacher at Girton Grammar Junior School has provided Kristie the opportunity to extend her theatre expertise to a directing role (Peter Pan Jnr. and Aladdin Jnr.) and she has more recently provided vocal coaching for the lead cast of The Lion King Jnr. and Alice in Wonderland Jnr. Being part of Fiddler on the Roof has been an exceptionally joyful experience. Kristie will be beaming with pride as this vibrant cast take you on the emotional journey of three young women who follow their hearts, despite the family’s expectations and traditions. This story resonates well with Kristie. She is forever grateful to her eternally patient husband, Craig, and their two children for their love and support.

Emily Calder has had a long-term association with the stage. Originally introduced to the world of music at the age of 4, Emily Plays the violin, viola and cello, teaching and performing on all three. Emily was a principle strings pedagogue with the Mitchell Conservatorium of music in Bathurst NSW for 8 years, where she directed a number of string ensembles and performed with the Macquarie Philharmonic Orchestra, Bathurst Chamber orchestra and the Colour City Chamber Orchestra (Orange, NSW). Emily holds a Diploma of Teaching through USQ (2010) and a Bachelor of Music through UNE (2017). In 2011 Emily had the opportunity to study conducting and ensemble directing with the worldrenowned Jerry Nowak. Emily’s love of theatre was first inspired in primary school when she was enrolled in drama lessons. Emily worked her way through the AMEB syllabus and completed her Certificate of Theatre and Performance Australia with honours in 2004. In the intervening time, she has studied Theatre and Performance with NIDA and at a tertiary level through UNE where she is currently studying her Masters of Theatre and Performance. Emily has taken part, on and off the stage, in many musicals and plays including Sweeny Todd, The Sound of Music, Oliver Twist, The King and I, Calamity Jane, Secret Bridesmaids’ Business, Much Ado About Nothing and most recently The Phantom of the Opera with Nexus BYT.
