2024 WINTERIM CATALOG
The world is the true classroom.
The most rewarding and important type of learning is through experience, seeing something with our own eyes.
Jack Hanna
WHAT IS WINTERIM?
Fellowship Christian School’s Winterim is a series of specialized school days that allow students to engage in experiential learning on and off campus.
The commitment of Fellowship Christian School’s faculty, parents, and mentors in the community makes Winterim possible for our students. Our vision is for students to gain insight and experience in their interests and abilities through Winterim, further developing their potential as image-bearers of Christ.
Winterim takes place during the first two weeks of school following Christmas break, ending on the Friday before the MLK weekend, between the fall and spring semesters.
JUNIORS and SENIORS
Winterim Internship Overview
Winterim internships add to the high school experience by providing junior and senior students the unique opportunity to shadow and explore various career fields. These real-life work experiences enable students to make more informed college and career choices as well as provide them the opportunity to explore their field of interest. Students may discover the career field to which they feel called, or conversely, they may learn that a career does not align with their interests and gifts! Either way, an internship is an invaluable tool in providing students with a deeper understanding of living out their faith in a real-world work setting and providing a better understanding of how they are wired.
Internship Timeline
All juniors and those seniors who are NOT attending the Passion Conference:
Thursday, January 4th through Friday, January 12th
Seniors attending the Passion Conference:
Passion: Wednesday, January 3rd through Friday, January 5th
Internship: Monday, January 8th through Friday, January 12th
Attendance
These are scheduled school days; attendance is required. Any unexcused absence will have the normal corresponding consequence and documentation expectations.
Attendance will be taken by the Winterim Faculty Advisor through the daily logs and reflections that each student writes.
Attendance is required just as it is during both semesters of traditional academic education. 11th and 12th grade students will secure off-site internships that allow them to work alongside professionals in their area of interest. Students are expected to adjust their internship schedule to attend all practices and games for their winter sport.
Potential conflicts should be discussed with the Faculty Advisor or Winterim Director and the High School Principal prior to the end of the fall semester.
Internship Hosts
Internship Hosts are community partners who agree to be the liaison to guide students in their places of business for two weeks in January. Some businesses and organizations contact FCS about hosting students; however, it is primarily the student’s responsibility to find and set up their internship experience. Students can find internship opportunities by networking through family connections, friends, school, and community relationships.
We are looking for additional internship hosts! Internships are non-paid, could have performance expectations (i.e., intern tasks), or could be shadowing a position for up to 7 days, allowing students to get real-world experience in different fields of interest while experiencing what life beyond high school/college could look like. The Winterim period is January 4 (or January 3 if requested) through Friday, January 12. If you or someone you know is interested in hosting a student intern, please complete the 2024 Winterim Internship Host Interest Form.
Internship Faculty Advisors
Each student is assigned an Internship Faculty Advisor who will assist them in managing the timing, communication, and paperwork requirements necessary to approve their internship choice. The Faculty Advisor will utilize Google Classroom or email to send and receive information, contracts, and other communication directly to the student interns, who will communicate with their Internship Host The Faculty Advisor is not responsible for and will not find an Internship Host for students; juniors and seniors are responsible for finding their own Internship Host at an off-site work location for their internship
During the two weeks of Winterim, Faculty Advisors will check in with their student interns, read each student’s daily log, and answer any questions. Once the Faculty Advisor receives each student’s final daily log they will turn in the student’s grade based on the completion of all assigned deliverables.
Expectations/Evaluations
The parent(s) and the student’s Faculty Advisor must approve each student’s internship.
A Winterim internship must accumulate 30-40 hours per week, and the intern cannot be paid.
Students must provide their own transportation just as they would to/from school.
Students will be evaluated by their Faculty Advisor for their prompt submissions via Google Classroom in preparation for and during their internships

WINTERIM ELECTIVES & EXCURSIONS OVERVIEW
