BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS

The monthly Board of Directors meeting for Williamsburg Colony generally are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6:00 PM, at the clubhouse located at 12315 John Crump. Anyone that would like to attend a meeting and address the Board should contact PCMI’s office 281-870-0585, at least a week prior to the meeting so that you can be included on the agenda.

PARK USE

Park hours have been posted. Park hours are 8 AM to 8 PM. Also, those wishing to play baseball in the park or street, please be careful. Any damage done to resident’s property is the responsibility of those parents of the children that cause it. Also it has been brought to the Board’s attention that use of foul language and trouble at the park must stop. If Constables report such behavior, individuals may become barred from park/pool area. Let’s all have fun and play nice. Older kids watch out for little ears nearby.

Remember, $250 reward to anyone who provides information about damage or vandalism to the park. This reward will be paid and no one will ever know who reported such damage.

MINUTES OF THE WILLIAMSBURG COLONY MAINTENANCE ASSOCIATION, INC. SPECIAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS

OCTOBER 12, 2011 A meeting of the Board of Directors of the Williamsburg Colony Maintenance Association, Inc., was held on Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at 5:00 PM at the community clubhouse, pursuant to Notice attached as Exhibit “A.” Directors in attendance were Ken Rychlik, John Eberlan, Jana Heaton and Shelli Shaw. Also in attendance was Dolores Sue representing Planned Community Management, Inc. (PCMI).

With a quorum present the meeting was called to order at 5:00 PM. HEARING The primary purpose of the meeting was to hold a hearing with a resident for a fence that needed repair. The homeowner explained that he feels that a homeowner with the following criteria should be exempt from deed restriction enforcement.

1) Has the largest home in the neighborhood 2) Property Value is higher than any other home in the neighborhood 3) If you have lived in the neighborhood for more than ten (10) years.

The Board explained that the deed restrictions apply to every lot in the neighborhood. The homeowner asked for the process in which to amend the deed restrictions and include the above as exemption from deed restrictions. The board explained the process.

With no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 5:39 pm.

ABANDONED OR OVERGROWN PROPERTY

Do you live next door or near someone who has abandoned or left a house vacant? Has the grass grown two or more feet high? Are there rodents and snakes coming from their backyards? Would you like to get the property cleaned up? Can you see over the back fence from your property?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you are the one who needs to make the first move in getting this matter resolved. Williamsburg Colony Maintenance Association cannot call the Harris County Health Department at 713-439-6270, since we can only report on property adjacent to the front entrance and the Pool/ Clubhouse areas. We need someone who will give permission for the Health Department to come on their property to view violations of neighbors. So please, help us get rid of dangerous conditions in our subdivision.

STREET LIGHTS

The homeowner did agree to comply and repair the fence within three (3) weeks from October 12, 2011.

Your Association pays for your streetlights from your annual dues, whether they work or not. If a light is out in your area, please call 713-207-2222 and report it. Each light pole should have a number on it. When reporting the out or malfunctioning light, give them the pole number and closest street address. We want all of our lights to work.

Most of the trouble we have in the subdivision that is attributed to mischievous minors occurs after the curfew. Once park hours are posted, anyone in the park after hours will be charged with trespassing.

So please neighbors, if and when you have a garage sale, let’s try and remember not to place garage sale signs on any of our community signs or poles. Also, remove signs that are staked when your garage sale is complete. Cleaner streets do make a difference.

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.

Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by human being who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question or 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle or 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.”

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained.

Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

INGREDIENTS: 4 large baking potatoes, baked 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon paprika 1/8 teaspoon pepper 8 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled 1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese 1/2 cup sour cream 4 green onions, sliced

DIRECTIONS: Cut potatoes in half lengthwise; scoop out pulp, leaving a 1/4-in. shell (save pulp for another use). Place potatoes skins on a greased baking sheet. Combine oil, Parmesan cheese, salt, garlic powder, paprika and pepper; brush over both sides of skins. Bake at 475 degrees F for 7 minutes; turn. Bake until crisp, about 7 minutes more. Sprinkle bacon and cheddar cheese inside skins. Bake 2 minutes longer or until the cheese is melted. Top with sour cream and onions. Serve immediately. Beets. Choose beets that are firm with a deep red color, smooth surface and slender tap root. You can also judge freshness from the condition of the beet tops. Wilted or decayed greens may indicate a lack of freshness. However, beets that remain firm to the touch, rather than wilted or soft, may still be good. Beets can be stored refrigerated in a plastic bag or vegetable crisper for about 1-2 weeks.

The greens should be removed prior to storage. If eating the greens, be sure to thoroughly wash them in cold water. Beet greens will keep refrigerated for about 3-5 days.

Broccoli. Fresh broccoli should have fresh-looking light green stalks of consistent thickness. Bud clusters should be tight and dark green, sometimes with a purple hue. Avoid broccoli with tough stems or open, flowering bud clusters. Fresh broccoli will keep refrigerated in the crisper for up to 3 to 5 days.

Cabbage. Cabbage heads should be firm and heavy for their size.

Look for crisp blemish-free leaves with an even color that clings tightly to the head. Cabbage will absorb odors of other foods. Refrigerate uncut and unwashed in a plastic bag or container for up to seven days.

Carrots. Look for carrots that are well-shaped with firm, smooth exteriors. Colors should be vibrant orange to red orange although there are white and even maroon varieties of carrots available in specialty markets. Tops are typically trimmed closely since the leafy greens decay rapidly and contribute to the decline of the carrot itself.

Flabby, soft or wilted carrots, or those that show any mildew, decay, growth cracks or splits, should be avoided. When purchasing fresh carrots with tops, remove the tops and store unwashed in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Celery. Choose stalks with rigid ribs that snap crisply when bent. The inside surface of the ribs should be clean and smooth. Leaves should be fresh with no signs of wilting. Refrigerate covered, unwashed celery for up to 2 weeks. Leave the ribs attached to the stalk until ready for use.

Grapefruit. Choose grapefruit that are heavy for their size and well shaped. The skin should be smooth with a blemish-free outer peel.

Don’t worry about any slight greening of the skin after harvesting; it does not affect the quality of the fruit. Surface marks that result from the fruit being wind-brushed against the tree do not affect the quality of the fruit either. Keep refrigerated. The fruit will keep for 7-10 days.

Grapefruit does not ripen further after harvest.

Greens. Cracked ice around and in packages may help extend shelf life. Keep at proper humidity levels to prevent wilting. Collard greens should be handled like spinach. Kale will freeze at 31° F, -.6° C. Do not store or transport ethylene-sensitive items with commodities that produce ethylene. Two can be lightly frozen several times without sustaining serious damage.

Herbs. Typical shelf life: bag, 5+ days; tub, 7+ days when stored at the proper temperature.

Mushrooms. Look for firm, evenly colored mushrooms. Avoid those that are broken, damaged or have soft spots, as well as those that seem damp. A good mushroom will have a good smell. Store fresh mushrooms, unwashed, in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Oranges. Reach for firm fruit that is heavy for its size. Take a sniff too. There should be a distinct citrus aroma. Avoid shriveled or soft fruit. Keep your oranges at room temperature. They should last for about two weeks. Make sure to turn them often and check for signs of mold, especially in a high humidity environment.

Spinach. Choose leaves that are crisp and dark green in color with a nice earthy fragrance. Avoid limp, damaged leaves with yellow spots.

Refrigerate unwashed spinach in a plastic bag for up to three days.

Before using, rinse thoroughly to remove grit.

Squash. For summer squash like zucchini and yellow squash, look for blemish-free skins and average size selections. Overly large choices may be stringy with tough exteriors. For winter squash such as pumpkins, look for shells without crack, bruises or decay.

Pumpkins should be fully ripe with firm rinds, bright orange color and heavy weight. Summer squash can be stored refrigerated for 3 to 5 days. Winter squash can be stored whole in a cool (50 to 60 degrees F) dry area for several months.

Sweet Potatoes. All varieties of potatoes should be uniform in size, clean, firm and smooth. Avoid potatoes with wrinkled skins, soft dark spots and cut surfaces. A green tinge - indicative of prolonged light exposure - is caused by the alkaloid solanine, which can be toxic if eaten in quantity. Store potatoes in a cool, dark and airy place uncovered. They will keep for several weeks.

Drs. James Jacobs and Nicolas Manriquez, of Your Total Foot Care Specialist, are pleased to announce, two $1,500 “Stepping Into The Future” scholarships for 2012 KISD graduating seniors. Applications must be submitted to the offices of Your Total Foot Care Specialist

by March 29, 2012, 5:00 PM. A third party committee will select the two winning applicants. The “Stepping Into The Future” scholarship program is available to seniors graduating with GPA’s ranging from 2.5 to 3.7. The scholarships are geared towards those students showing academic promise through a combination of demonstrated academic achievement and leadership potential. The two “Stepping Into The Future” scholarship recipients will be announced at the Katy ISD Awards Ceremonies during May.

Katy Tween/Teen Talent Showcase Competition

Global Arm, Inc. and Teens Exercising Extraordinary Success (T.E.E.S.) hosted the inaugural Katy Tween Teen Talent Showcase Competition on Saturday, December 3, 2011, at Zo-ca-lo Lounge (510 Mason Road). Contestants from Katy ISD and Ft. Bend County ISD entered the competition. Along with their parents, they networked with many recording industry professionals and received valuable advice on career paths, personality, stage presence and business matters. Vocal ability wasn’t the only surprise of the day - two of the contestants performed their numbers by playing the guitar. The 1st place winner of the showcase was Ms. Reagan Douglas, of Katy, TX. Ms. Douglas performed a song she wrote entitled, Till The End (dedicated to Cancer victims), with her guitar; 2nd place winner was Ms. Skyler Sadler (Katy, TX) who performed At Last by Etta James; and the 3rd place winner was Ms. Kaitlyn Wright (Katy, TX) who performed Change by Carrie Underwood. Each winner received a trophy, courtesy of Katy Trophies. 2nd and 3rd place winners received a Chili’s Gift Card, courtesy of Don McGill Toyota. The 1st place winner won a package valued at over $16,000 which consisted of a complimentary studio session at Music World Studios (courtesy of Matthew Knowles), a complimentary photo shoot (courtesy of Jamie LeBlanc Photography), a featured song on Coast 2 Coast Mix tape hosted by Wildman Teddy T (courtesy of Star Quality Entourage) and a featured song on the upcoming film soundtrack starring Snoop Dog (courtesy of Vision World Entertainment).

Community Events Keep Kids Connected

Valentine Card Making event on February 4th in the afternoon at Bonnie Holland Elementary. Last year the event was put together by a few moms in a playgroup and over 50 people showed up and they raised almost $2800. This year they are moving to a bigger venue and hope to have more children making cards for the kids at MD Anderson.

Bingo Fundraiser on Saturday, March 3rd at 6 pm at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Old Katy. The event will start with an enchilada dinner from 5-6 pm for $6 for anyone who is interested.

The Bingo Fundraiser is $25 per person for 12 games (on 9 cards for each game) with a free bingo dauber for each player. For more information, email keepkidsconnected@gmail.com.

Keep Kids Connected was created to help kids stay connected to family and friends while they undergo their treatment for cancer or any other life-threatening illness. The idea for the organization was created by Caitlyn Mortus who is, herself, a cancer survivor. While going through her treatments, she was given a Netbook computer from a family friend. The computer kept her in contact with her friends and helped keep her spirits up when she was in the hospital for her treatments or unable to have visitors. Her wish is that every kid battling cancer or any life-threatening illness be given a computer so they can stay connected to their family and friends while they are going through their treatments. Her wish has become our mission.

Enjoy the outdoors with your child, age 2 1/2 to 5, at Audubon nature programs (called the “Titmouse Club”) offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10:00 to 11:00 AM, from mid-September through mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester Boulevard. The programs feature fun nature talks, stories, crafts, hands-on activities and walks in the woods. It’s official, Houstonians through the Houston Fire Fighters raised a record breaking $509,961 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association making them the #1 Fill-the-Boot department in the country for the last 9 out of 10 years raising more than $6.3 million during that time.

For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-theBoot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will also be out March 10th, April 14th and May 12th to collect funds for the campaign.

The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDA’s outpatient clinics at Texas Children’s Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas.
