NATURAL MOSQUITO REPELLANT

Mosquitoes have complex methods of detecting hosts and different types of mosquitoes react to different stimuli. Most mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk, but there are also mosquitoes that seek hosts during the day. You can avoid being bitten by making sure you aren’t attracting mosquitoes, using attractants to lure mosquitoes elsewhere, using a repellent and avoiding actions that diminish the effectiveness of the repellent.

Many mosquitoes are attracted to the slightly cooler temperatures of the extremities. Mosquitoes are attracted by perspiration because of the chemicals it contains and also because it increases the humidity around your body. Even small amounts of water (e.g., moist plants or mud puddles) will draw mosquitoes. Standing water also allows mosquitoes to reproduce. These natural products will effectively repel mosquitoes, but they require more frequent reapplication (at least every 2 hours) and higher concentrations than DEET. Because of the differences between types of mosquitoes, products that contain multiple repellents tend to be more effective than those

FATHER’S DAY JUNE 17TH The third Sunday in June is Dad’s time in the sun. And contrary to what some cynics contend, this holiday was not the invention of a greeting card company - commercial greeting cards as we know them didn’t even exist when Sonora Smart Dodd thought up Father’s Day in 1909. Father’s Day was the brainchild of Sonora Smart Dodd, whose mother had died giving birth to her. At a time when many widowed men sent their offspring to live farm in eastern Washington. In 1909, grown and married, Sonora was in church listening to a Mother’s Day sermon when the thought struck her that fathers deserved credit too, especially hers. Through her efforts, Spokane, 1924, the custom had spread through the country and Calvin Coolidge made

requested that Congress pass a joint resolution making the third Sunday in June

Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.
