Over the last several months the Board has received several complaints about vehicles parking on the streets within Lone Oak. For the overall safety of our residents, as well as ensuring emergency vehicles are able to quickly maneuver through our streets, the Board has asked the deputies patrolling Lone Oak to address any/all vehicle violations; including speeding and parking. Section 7 of the Texas Drivers Handbook covers parking and states: DO NOT PARK VEHICLES: • In front of a public or private driveway.

• Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.

• Within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection.

• Within 30 feet upon the approach to any flashing signal, stop sign, yield sign or other traffic control signal located at the side of a roadway.

• Do not park more than 18 inches from the curb or in a way that obstructs the flow of traffic.

Speeding in Lone Oak has been a hot topic of discussion lately. There have been numerous reports of speeding and of running stop signs. We have notified the Sheriff of these reports and have asked that tickets be issued to offenders. Several surrounding schools and residents have purchased kid alert safety signs to be placed in front of their homes and or buildings to remind people to slow down. LONE OAK CRIME WATCH NEEDS YOUR HELP

Lone Oak’s Crime Watch Chairperson would like to encourage more residents to become involved in the Lone Oak Crime Watch Program. More Block Captains are needed! Each Block Captain is responsible for contacting the residents who are assigned to them when there is information to pass along regarding incidents in Lone Oak or surrounding areas. Most Block Captains set up their distribution list via email, so it is important for residents to know who their Block Captain is. The time required is minimal - attend a few periodic meetings, distribute information, be aware of happenings in your neighborhood and host a National Night Out Party once a year! If you would like to volunteer or would just like more information, please contact your Board.

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects.

• Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates.

• Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots.

• Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September.

• Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up.

- Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves.

- Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug.

• Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted.

• Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies.

• Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring.

• St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter.

• Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work.

When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day.

The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s.

• Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant.

• Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

CHEESY ACORN SQUASH INGREDIENTS: 1 acorn squash, halved and seeded 3 tablespoons butter 1 cup diced celery 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup fresh mushrooms, sliced 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 pinch ground black pepper 1 teaspoon chopped parsley 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place squash cut side down in a glass dish. Cook in microwave for 20 minutes on HIGH, until almost tender.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

We went looking for recipes for the National Cheese Pizza Day and the Acorn Squash Day this month. Enjoy!

FOUR CHEESE MARGHERITA PIZZA INGREDIENTS: 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 8 Roma tomatoes, sliced 2 (12 inch) pre-baked pizza crusts 8 ounces shredded Mozzarella cheese 4 ounces shredded Fontina cheese 10 fresh basil leaves, washed, dried 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and add celery and onion; saute until transparent. Stir in mushrooms; cook 2 to 3 minutes more. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and parsley. Divide mixture in half, spoon into the squash and cover.

DIRECTIONS: Stir together olive oil, garlic and salt; toss with tomatoes and allow to stand for 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Brush each pizza crust with some of the tomato marinade. Sprinkle the pizzas evenly with Mozzarella and Fontina cheeses. Arrange tomatoes overtop, then sprinkle with shredded basil, Parmesan and feta cheese.

Cook 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Uncover, sprinkle with cheese and put back in the oven until the cheese bubbles.

CYPRESS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL - READY, SET, SERVE OTHERS

CCS students enjoy serving others whenever possible. Recently two groups of students took the opportunity to really make a difference in the lives of children in our city and across the world. They encourage you to get involved wherever and whenever you can to help make someone’s life “better today than it was yesterday.” CCS CCS sophomores John Ethan Baldwin, sophomores John Ethan Baldwin, Scott Steinhauser and Lauren Beach Scott Steinhauser and Lauren Beach traveled to Belize with their church youth group. One part of the group worked primarily on construction, while others focused on a VBS (Vacation Bible School) with the village children. John Ethan was one of the main builders for a cabin the majority of the week and he helped out in various other construction projects - always giving 100% even when it meant digging a deep trench all day. Scott served on the VBS and construction teams. He even let the girls dress him up to dramatize the Bible story. He interacted with the children and always made himself available to serve in other areas.

Lauren spent the week helping with VBS. She set up crafts and talked with the children to make sure they understood the story. The CCS varsity cheer squad spent one of their camp days at Kids’ Meals Houston. They were able to pack more than 2,200 lunches for local children who normally would not have a lunch. The Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce FORE Cy-Fair Golf Tournament will be held at Blackhorse Golf Club on Tuesday, September 29th with an 11 AM shotgun start. A 1-hour yoga class suitable for all levels of experience is being offered at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary. VFW VOICE OF DEMOCRACY A NATIONAL ESSAY COMPETITION

The Voice of Democracy essay is a National Competition created in 1947 to allow high school students in grades 9-12 to voice their opinion on their responsibility to our nation. The theme for 2015 is: “My Vision for America.”

Students from public, private and parochial high schools and home schooled students, in the U.S. and in American high schools overseas may enter.

The oral presentation must be not less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes in length, spoken in English and recorded on the media specified on the application form, with no background noise or enhancements. The essay cannot contain the student’s name, city, state, grade level or refer to their nationality. Entries must be received no later than midnight Nov. 1, 2015. STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston.
