CONSTABLE PATROL

As a reminder, the Association has a patrol contract through Harris County Precinct 5 Constable. We share 40 hours of patrol per week at random time with Aberdeen Green HOA. Please add the following dispatch number to your cell phones or post in a visible place at home in case you need support in a non life-threatening situation. Their non-emergency dispatch number is 281-463-6666. The Constable Patrol also offers a free vacation watch service. Log on to their website at www.co.harris.tx.us/pct5/forms.aspx to obtain a form and learn more about the program.

LOITERING AND VANDALISM

Please help us to keep our recreation areas safe and clean by reporting any and all loitering after dark directly to the Constable and then to management. Please also remember to report any suspicious persons walking around the community or at the parks immediately to the Constable Patrol non-emergency dispatch number at 281-463-6666. Better safe than sorry!

HOME IMPROVEMENTS

Please remember that any change or improvement to the exterior of your home or lot (even in the back yard) must be applied for through the Association prior to starting. You can find a copy of the home improvement guidelines and application on the website at www.highsierramanagementonline.com.

• The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin).

• On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

CY-CHRISTIAN TEAM FOR HALEY’S MIRACLE

Solar Screens and Shades

A group of Cypress Christian School faculty, students and families participated in the 2013 Be The Match Walk+Run in Sugarland in honor of CCS seventh grade student Haley Cannon. Haley is battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and she received her miracle on July 9, 2013 in the form of a bone marrow transplant from a donor on the international registry. The journey to that day is an incredible and inspiring story, because God had some amazing plans for Haley and her family. CCS teacher Mrs. Caroline Young participated in the event and wrote this about her experience: “I have never been a runner, but on July 10th, I started my first day of “Couch to 5K” training. I also signed up to be a team captain for Team Haley’s Miracle. Our team raised $1,450 to help match volunteer marrow donors with blood cancer patients, to help uninsured patients and to fund research. I started off walking and worked my way up to running. I trained almost every day for 10 weeks and on Saturday, September 14th,” I ran the 5K for Haley! It was a great feeling to cross the finish line for her since she couldn’t get out and run as she was recovering at home from her bone marrow transplant. It was an even better feeling when I signed up for the Bone Marrow Donor Registry. There are so many people who are still waiting for their miracle in the form of a bone marrow donor. It is very easy to sign up. Anyone who is interested can go to the Be The Match at http://bethematch.org/Home.aspx website for more information. Haley’s story was featured on ABC13 news, also. To view, visit http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/video?id=9239527.”

TRACKS-TO-TRAILS IDEA EARNS HOUSTON CHRISTIAN STUDENT A CATALYST AWARD FROM HOUSTON TOMORROW

A Houston Christian High School student’s leadership trip to Turkey inspired his award-winning proposal to convert unused Houston-area train tracks into pedestrian and bike trails. Michael McCreight, a junior, was the only high school student to receive an inaugural Catalyst Award from Houston Tomorrow, which held its recognition ceremony September 26th at the BioScience Research Collaborative. He was selected from students in 13 counties in the Houston region. The Crystal Awards recognize individuals who propose a large-scale catalytic change that would lead Houston to become the home of the healthiest, happiest and most prosperous people in the United States by 2036, Houston’s 200th birthday. Michael’s proposal, called “Turning Old Travels Into New Travels,” explored how to repurpose something old and unused into a healthy, lifestyle-changing amenity for many to access. “The land is already there and nothing would need to be torn down,” he said. While in Turkey this past summer with Global Trek, Houston Christian’s student leadership program offering cultural perspective led by Head of School Stephen Livingston, Michael noticed how “people walked to get places instead of just for exercise.” It reminded him of his own neighborhood, in Houston Heights. “I realized that we have guided trails to walk on versus the busy streets, which encourages our neighborhood to commute more on foot or cycling,” Michael said. “It was then that I realized this would be a good way to try and help Houston.” Former Houston Christian trustee Bill Peel encouraged Michael to enter his tracks-to-trails proposal in the Crystal Awards. The competition required an essay and brief video explaining the idea in detail. This year’s competition recognized individuals in five categories. Adult award categories included Emeritus, Excellence, Engaged and Evolving. The student award category, Emerging, targeted college and high school students. Michael earned the Emerging category for high school students. Houston Tomorrow is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to the improvement of life in the Houston area. Houston Christian High School is located at 2700 West Sam Houston Parkway North, at the corner of Kempwood Drive in West Houston. GIRL SCOUTS COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL

We would like to thank the adult and older girl volunteers who helped out at the Rally Nights that were held in September and October! Please contact Dianne Massie (dianne.massie@att.net) or call her at 281-550-9148 for more information on Copper Creek Meadows Community Girl Scouts. You can also check the website (www.gssjc. org) for Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council. New Girl Scout Leaders were invested as Girl Scouts at a meeting held on October 8th. They celebrated the birthday of Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low (October 31st) a little early with a special cake and a time to get acquainted. Our leader/Daughter weekend is an event that has made wonderful memories in the past, so we are looking forward to this year’s event. Talent show? Dutch oven cook-off? Trail ride? There are always lots of things to do… and having some one-onone time with your OWN daughter makes it even more special for our busy leaders! There are more activities in the planning stage, including a Daisy Day for our youngest Girl Scouts. Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18 who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the following elementary schools (and their corresponding middle and high schools): Wilson, Metcalf, Lieder, Tipps, Texas Christian School, Birkes, Fiest, Lowery, Horne, Owens, Hairgrove, Kirk, Lee, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Christian Life Center. Girl Scouting has been building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place - and we’ve been doing it since 1912! Give us a call - we’d love to talk to you!

JEFF FURSTENBERG EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT

Thanks to Jeff Furstenberg, 15 year old sophomore at Cypress Falls High School and group of fellow scouts from Troop 202, the Labay Middle School concession stand has been renovated and is ready for use. He did this for his Eagle project, a requirement for the highest and hardest rank to earn in Boy Scouts. For this project, the boys had to tear down all of the old paneling, cut new paneling, trim and windows, paint and install it all. It took 3 days to do the work (in 100 degree weather), but it took months to prepare. He had to fill out lots of paperwork, get it approved and had to earn money for the supplies. But it turned out well and Labay now has a usable concession stand. Before, the concession stand was very run down with rotted wood and paper thin paneling you could poke holes through and hazy windows. Now it is fresh and ready for use. Next time you go to a Labay football game, go check out the concession stand and buy yourself some snacks! Jeff would like to thank everybody who helped out including the scouts and the great assistant scout masters that volunteered their time. He couldn’t have done it without you guys.

BOY SCOUT TROOP 1296

Fall is an exciting time outdoors in Texas as vast numbers of birds migrate through our state to winter in warmer climates. Hawks to hummingbirds travel hundreds if not thousands of miles to visit or pass through Texas and are a few of the bird species skins that Audubon education director, Mary Ann Weber , taught the scouts about when she recently visited Troop 1296 scouts. She brought with her a special guest - a Great Horned Owl, rehabilitated from an injury and now on the teaching “staff.” He kept a sharp eye on everyone as they learned about birds, as part of their introduction to the Bird Study merit badge. The scouts have since been on birding trips during camp outs at Brazos Bend to investigate these avian neighbors. If you are interested in joining Boy Scouts, please call Troop 1296 Committee Chair, Mr. David Covington, at 281-8552239 or visit our website www.houston1296.mytroop.us. Boy Scout Troop 1296 meets weekly on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Holmsley Elementary School, located at 7315 Hudson Oaks Dr., next to Langham Creek High School, during the school year. Meetings include activities, skill sessions and planning for our monthly camp outs. Come join the fun!

Later in the month, some of our Scouts participated in Scout Day at Schlitterbahn in Galveston, where they earned a Swimming Belt Loop while having a great time playing at the park. The program, which was recently recognized at the White House in Washington, DC, allows veterans to meet during a “Closed Retreat” that starts on Friday afternoon and ends on Sunday afternoon. “Proceeds from this tournament will benefit the program which is offered at no cost to veterans,” says Sam Luna, founder of Vets Journey Home Texas Inc. The program benefits veterans with post-traumatic stress (PTS) and mild Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) but any veteran that applies is accepted. MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!

CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. MUSEUM OF DYSFUNCTION IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. ROME by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, workshopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 PM. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. “I’m In PAIN” Can Chiropractic Help ME ? We are often asked, “What’s the best way of finding out whether or not a doctor of chiropractic can help my problem?” We believe the answer can be found in a complete chiropractic consultation and examination, including x-rays. And to help find out for sure, we will do a complete consultation and examination, including x-rays, if necessary, (procedures that normally cost $187.00 or more) for $25.00. We will make this special program available through November. The only exception to the offer involves personal injury cases (workers’ compensation and auto accidents) in which there is no charge directly to the patient.

GIVE AN HOUR™ NETWORK PROVIDES FREE COUNSELING TO TROOPS AND FAMILIES

Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery, many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities to professional counselors. Give an Hour™ provides services that are separate from the military establishment, offering options to service members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care. Give an Hour™ is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental health professionals providing free counseling services to returning troops and their families. Give an Hour™ offers services to veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents, siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service.
