KATY ELKS SOCCER SHOOT BOASTS SIBLING WINNERS Saturday, September 14 was a very exciting day for sibling winners in the Katy Elks Lodge Soccer Shoot. Winning first place in the 7 and Under girls category was Kendall Grimes. This was her second Soccer Shoot win, as she did the same two years ago at age 5. Kendall’s brother won the 7 and Under boys division. This was his first outing as a contestant shooter. Both became eligible to compete at the district competition being held at Clear Lake Elks Lodge in September. Winners at district will advance to the State finals at the Elks Children’s Services Center at Ottine, between Lulling and Gonzales in October. th

The Soccer Shoot involves shooting three balls (after one warm-up shot) at five different sized goals from a set distance. Points are then awarded for each successful shot with increasing points awarded as the goals become smaller and more difficult.

GULF COAST DISTRICT ELKS ASSIST IN HOUSTON ANNUAL VETERANS’ STAND DOWN The rains of Friday, September 20, 2013 could not put a damper on the activities of the Houston Veterans Affairs sponsored Stand Down at Emancipation Park in Houston. As is the practice each year, the Gulf Coast District Elks lodges participate by supplying and serving meals to all the homeless Veterans who come to the park for the event, as well as volunteers there to help. Approximately 300-350 people were served a noon meal. Some of the services offered to homeless Veterans on this day include medical exams, job advice, gifts of backpacks or other supplies, legal advice and of course, a barbeque lunch and sack lunches to take away for later provided by area Elks.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Although this day may help some of the immediate needs of those Veterans who need us most, for many it can become the beginning of the road to independence and self-support through a number of the services provided on this important day each year. Some assistance is available for rent, employment and job finding in addition to the above-mentioned medical and legal assistance.

Elks from three of the area lodges were present on Friday to serve the food and provide an encouraging smile to those who greatly needed it. Clear Lake, Houston and Katy Elks lodges were represented at the Stand Down. Prior preparation of the meat and purchasing of supplies needed was handled by members of the Houston Elks Lodge, with their Auxiliary preparing sandwiches for the sack lunches. The motto: “Elks Care - Elks Share” was quite apparent.

THANKSGIVING ON A BUDGET Go for What’s in Season When planning your meal, first consult the calendar. This is no time for asparagus and artichokes. Buy produce in season and you will get much more for your money, not to mention livelier flavors. Brussels sprouts are at their peak in late November; farmers’ markets should have them in huge quantities, still on their stalks. (Serving them sliced rather than whole not only makes them more tantalizing but also helps them go further.) Fresh herbs have become available all year round, so it can be a better deal to buy a bunch rather than an expensive jar of the dried kind - fresh sage might be $1.99 compared with $6.50 for half an ounce dried, which could go stale by the next time you need it. Buy a Supermarket Bird In an ideal world we would all be eating heritage turkeys. They have outstanding texture and flavor and when we buy them, we help preserve unique breeds. But they are anything but a bargain: A 12 to 14 pound bird, which feeds eight, from Heritage Foods USA goes for $159 including shipping or more than $10 a pound. Supermarket turkeys can be fine alternatives for less than $2 a pound. Just be sure to buy a free-range or organic turkey rather than an industrial one injected with flavored oil. Plus, brining will add flavor and improve texture in even the least expensive birds, all for about $2.29 for a big box of kosher salt, an ingredient that can be used to season the rest of the meal. Start From Scratch Some convenience foods are often ridiculously cheap, loaded as they are with high-fructose corn syrup and chemicals, yet

they rarely taste better than homemade. To cut costs and ensure the tastiest of feasts, make your own piecrust, cranberry sauce and gravy rather than opening up a box or can. Instead of paying $8 for a single loaf from an artisanal bakery, bake up some dinner rolls with yeast, butter and flour for a little over $7. A bakery-bought pecan pumpkin pie can go for upwards of $50, but a homemade version will run you $15 and $5 less if you omit the pecans. Know When to Buy Canned or Frozen Some canned and frozen foods are fine alternatives to fresh. Canned pumpkin is one of the great American ingredients and the generic brands are as good as premium labels. You could make a pie using a fresh pumpkin for $5, but you would wind up with a more watery filling than one made from a $2.49 can. And frozen vegetables can be both superior to and cheaper than out-of-season fresh ones; a bag of Cascadian Farms flashfrozen baby peas is $2.69, compared with $3.99 a pound or more for fresh snow peas, the only kind you are likely to find in November. Don’t Be a Slave to a Recipe If you don’t want to spring for three kinds of herbs in your soup or stuffing,

choose one. Or none. Nothing but salt and pepper is ever really indispensable. Substitute water for canned stock in a soup; use a slurry of flour and water to thicken your pan gravy rather than making turkey stock. Instead of investing in a can of shortening for a piecrust, substitute butter for the two tablespoons needed in the recipe. The great thing about Thanksgiving is that the whole really is much more than the parts. Cut corners where you have to and all anyone will notice in the end is a heaping plate. Make It a Potluck Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help. People are happy to pitch in and bring a dish or two and potlucks are trendy right now. Wine is not included in the budget here, so be open about suggesting a suitable-for-turkey California Zinfandel, like Rancho Zabaco Dancing Bull, which is less than $10. www.epicurious.com

THE THANKSGIVING TURKEY Of all the Thanksgiving symbols, the turkey has become the most well known. The wild turkey is native to northern Mexico and the eastern United States. The turkey has brown features with

buff-colored feathers on the tips of the wing and on the tail. The male turkey is called a Tom and as with most birds, is bigger and has brighter and more colorful plumage. The female is called a Hen and is generally smaller and drab in color. The Tom turkey has a long wattle (a fleshy, wrinkled, brightly colored fold of skin hanging from the neck or throat) at the base of its bill and additional wattles on the neck, as well as a prominent tuft of bristles resembling a beard projecting downward from its chest. The turkey was originally domesticated in Mexico and was brought into Europe early in the 16th century. Since that time, turkeys have been extensively raised because of the excellent quality of their meat and eggs. Some of the common breeds of turkey in the United States are the Bronze, Narragansett, White Holland and Bourbon Red. Though there is no real evidence that turkey was served at the Pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving, in a book written by the Pilgrim’s Governor Bradford, he does make mention of wild turkeys. In a letter sent to England, another Pilgrim describes how the governor sent “four men out fowling” returning with turkeys, ducks and geese.

THEATER/ARTS MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!

Carnival Round the Central Figure by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery. Museum of Dysfunction IV - December 6-14, 2013. Short plays from 200 writers who submitted from all over the US and were chosen by a panel. Co-produced by Wordsmyth Theatre. Rome by John Harvey - World Premier - March 6-22, 2014. This original script is being written by local playwright, John Harvey, work shopped by designers, musicians and actors, video documented over a year and presented as a collaborative effort as our final play in the season. Located at Studio 101 at Spring Street Studios, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. All performances begin at 8 pm. Price - $18 regular/ $10 students and seniors. Pay as you can on Mondays and $25 for opening night with a party immediately after the show. More info/reservations: www.mildredsumbrella. com - info@mildredsumbrella.com or 832-463-0409.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS) Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920’s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org. Sports Group 1 (SG1) is proud to announce that our U12 girls team took first place in the 30th Annual Houston Labor Day Soccer Tournament held at Katy and Bear Creek Parks. “The ladies worked together, overcoming the heat, lack of substitutions and still remained without a loss throughout the three-day tournament, we are extremely proud of their efforts,” said SG1 Director, Mr. Alex Parra.

Not Cooling or Not Heating

Even more impressive was the fact that the team did not receive one goal against during the entire tournament. Fredy Sanguinetti, who prepared the girls for the rigors of multiple pressure packed games, coaches the team. Coach Fredy said “They played great and deserve that first place trophy.”

THANKSGIVING TRIVIA • The Plymouth Pilgrims were the first to celebrate the

Thanksgiving in the fall of 1621. • The drink that the Puritans brought with them in the Mayflower was the beer. • The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast. MPL#37282

GARDENING TIPS FOR NOVEMBER • Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply.

• Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

The new homepage is the culmination of a yearlong initiative to gather feedback and direction from parents, staff and other Katy stakeholders about how the District’s website could better serve our community’s needs. What emerged is a clean design, consistent and improved navigation, an upgrade to the technology that supports the site and quick acess to our most frequently visited District-wide webpages. Department pages and campus websites will be transitioned to the new homepage format during the fall semester. In the meantime, some department pages and all campus websites will be temporarily linked to the older version of the District’s website. Some examples of pages in which visitors will experience redirects to the old website are the Transportation, Teaching & Learning and Special Education pages. We greatly appreciate your patience as we continue to improve upon the website to make it a better experience for all who visit it. Wishing you a successful school year, Katy ISD Technology Department.

STOP THAT BARKING! Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored and restless. Many find relief in barking. Some respond noisily to any and all activity. Nothing is as annoying as incessant barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog is a yapper or a yowler, please consider some of these bark-abatement ideas to keep the noise down in your area. Your neighbors will thank you! • Training. Always the first recommendation for any behavioral problem! Training not only helps your dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps you, too. You may get some insight into why your dog barks so much, or what it is trying to communicate. • Citronella collars. A humane alternative to the electricshock, anti-barking collar and costs about the same. • Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing an outspoken dog indoors or confining it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance to neighbors. • For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave a radio on to mask it. • Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; they need companionship-a cat, bird or another dog. Consider a midday visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care facility once or twice a week.

Life is a journey meant to be shared.

Come join us on The Way.

Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as ou do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.

FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW” Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law. As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’ When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash to free a community

of unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program. VACCINATION Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans.

YOUR HEALTH NOW! LOW FAT, HIGH TASTE THANKSGIVING! Let the eating festival begin! Mashed potatoes WITH gravy, buttery biscuits, ooey gooey pecan pie, fried turkey, all the trimmings and THEN some. Sounds like your traditional Thanksgiving holiday menu? You CAN eat all your favorite foods low fat and with high taste this holiday season! Here’s how: • When making rue, use skim milk with a cholesterol free spread, like Smart Balance. • If a recipe calls for cream, use skim milk. It tastes just the same. • Mashed potatoes are a must, but use half potato-half boiled cauliflower. It will be tasty AND you will get essential vitamins. • Skip the fatty dips with your fruit and veggie platters. Presentation is everything. Make your platters creative and if these dips are a must: make homemade dips. • Green bean casseroles are the tradition, so use low or no sodium soup, freshly boiled and chopped green beans, skim milk, a dash of fresh pepper and you can still afford the French fried onions! • Love the pies? Make your own low fat pie crust from scratch. The ready-made crusts are made with shortening and other unnecessary preservatives and additives.
