THANKSGIVING TRAVEL TIPS
A MapQuest poll regarding Thanksgiving traffic indicated that most people who travel by car for Thanksgiving, have more than an hour’s drive ahead of them and 25% have road trips that exceed 200 miles. With all those Thanksgiving travel cars on the road, traffic can get pretty messy. The busiest Thanksgiving travel days are Wednesday and Thursday. If your schedule allows, try to leave Tuesday. It feels early, sure, but nothing dampers the fun of a family holiday more than hours stuck in close quarters, as the highway - crowded with cars at a near standstill - stretches out interminably before you. And since you’ve started a day earlier than usual, you may then be able to avoid traffic jams post-Thanksgiving, by returning on Friday. The MapQuest poll suggests that Friday is the best day to return home for those traveling by car. Most people polled either leave Thursday night or stay for a long weekend. The time of day with most cars on the road appears to be between 9 in the morning and 12 noon. It follows, then, that either leaving very early or in the afternoon, should also cut down a bit on your time spent sitting in traffic during Thanksgiving week. www.luxuryresorttravel.suite101.com
THANKSGIVING ON A BUDGET
With the economy still slumping, a lavish Thanksgiving might not be on the table this year. But we can still - and should - feast. We just have to squeeze our fistful of dollars a little harder. GO FOR WHAT’S IN SEASON When planning your meal, first consult the calendar. This is no time for asparagus and artichokes. Buy produce in season and you will get much more for your money, not to mention livelier flavors. Brussels sprouts are at their peak in late November; farmers’ markets should have them in huge quantities, still on their stalks. (Serving them sliced rather than whole not only makes them more tantalizing but also helps them go further.) Fresh herbs have become available all year round, so it can be a better deal to buy a bunch rather than an expensive jar of the dried kind - fresh sage might be $1.99 compared with $6.50 for half an ounce dried, which could go stale by the next time you need it. BUY A SUPERMARKET BIRD In an ideal world we would all be eating heritage turkeys. They have outstanding texture and flavor and when we buy them, we help preserve unique breeds. But they are anything but a bargain: A 12 to 14 pound bird, which feeds eight, from Heritage Foods USA goes for $159 including shipping or more than $10 a pound. Supermarket turkeys can be fine alternatives for less than $2 a pound. Just be sure to buy a free-range or organic turkey rather than an industrial one injected with flavored oil. Plus, brining will add flavor and improve texture in even the least expensive birds, all for about $2.29 for a big box of kosher salt, an ingredient that can be used to season the rest of the meal. START FROM SCRATCH Some convenience foods are often ridiculously cheap, loaded as they are with high-fructose corn syrup and chemicals, yet they rarely taste better than homemade. To cut costs and ensure the

29615 FM 1093 Fulshear, TX (Next to Dollar General) tastiest of feasts, make your own piecrust, cranberry sauce and gravy rather than opening up a box or can. Instead of paying $8 for a single loaf from an artisanal bakery, bake up some dinner rolls with yeast, butter and flour for a little over $7. A bakery-bought pecan pumpkin pie can go for upwards of $50, but a homemade version will run you $15 and $5 less if you omit the pecans. KNOW WHEN TO BUY CANNED OR FROZEN Some canned and frozen foods are fine alternatives to fresh. Canned pumpkin is one of the great American ingredients and the generic brands are as good as premium labels. You could make a pie using a fresh pumpkin for $5, but you would wind up with a more watery filling than one made from a $2.49 can. And frozen vegetables can be both superior to and cheaper than out-of-season fresh ones; a bag of Cascadian Farms flash-frozen baby peas is $2.69, compared with $3.99 a pound or more for fresh snow peas, the only kind you are likely to find in November. DON’T BE A SLAVE TO A RECIPE If you don’t want to spring for three kinds of herbs in your soup or stuffing, choose one. Or none. Nothing but salt and pepper is ever really indispensable. Substitute water for canned stock in a soup; use a slurry of flour and water to thicken your pan gravy rather than making turkey stock. Instead of investing in a can of shortening for a piecrust, substitute butter for the two tablespoons needed in the recipe. The great thing about Thanksgiving is that the whole really is much more than the parts. Cut corners where you have to and all anyone will notice in the end is a heaping plate. MAKE IT A POTLUCK Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help. People are happy to pitch in and bring a dish or two and potlucks are trendy right now. Wine is not included in the budget here, so be open about suggesting a suitable-for-turkey California Zinfandel, like Rancho Zabaco Dancing Bull, which is less than $10. www.epicurious.com

• The Wampanoag Indians were the people who taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate the land. • The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days. • President George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795. • The state of New York officially made Thanksgiving Day an annual custom in 1817. • Sarah Josepha Hale, an editor with a magazine, started a Thanksgiving campaign in 1827 and it was result of her efforts that in 1863 Thanksgiving was observed as a day for national thanksgiving and prayer. • Abraham Lincoln issued a ‘Thanksgiving Proclamation’ on third October 1863 and officially set aside the last Thursday of November as the national day for Thanksgiving. Whereas earlier the presidents used to make an annual proclamation to specify the day when Thanksgiving was to be held. • President Franklin D. Roosevelt restored Thursday before last of November as Thanksgiving Day in the year 1939. He did so to make the Christmas shopping season longer and thus stimulate the economy of the state. • Congress passed an official proclamation in 1941 and declared that now onwards Thanksgiving will be observed as a legal holiday on the fourth Thursday of November every year. • Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States. But it was Thomas Jefferson who opposed him. It is believed that Franklin then named the male turkey as ‘tom’ to spite Jefferson. • The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition began in the 1920’s. • Californians are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America, the clothing of the Native Americans was made of animal skins (mainly deer skin). • On December 11, 1620 the first Pilgrims (or Puritans, as they were initially known) landed at Plymouth Rock. • By the fall of 1621 only half of the pilgrims, who had sailed on the Mayflower, survived. The survivors, thankful to be alive, decided to give a thanksgiving feast.

• Brown patch will continue to plague St. Augustine lawns as nights get cooler and humidity and rain continue. Discolored circles will appear in low areas almost overnight. Apply a fungicide recommended for brown patch according to label directions. Avoid walking through brown-patched turf. It spreads easily from the bottom of your shoes. If brown patch appears in the same lawn areas every year, add an inch or two of sandy topsoil to eliminate those low spots. • Fertilize St. Augustine turf with a winterizing formula to promote root growth over the winter months. Lower your lawn mover blades now and mow on a schedule that cuts no more than one-third of the grass blade away. • As chrysanthemums and other perennials finish blooming, cut flowering stalks to the ground to permit all strength to be used in making root growth. • Feed roses lightly, but avoid nitrogen fertilizers. Do not prune now. Keep up spraying program and water deeply. • Remove dead foliage and plant debris to help eradicate insects and disease organisms. Thin out and transfer volunteer seedlings. Beds made now will benefit by weathering before being planted. If soil is heavy, dig six inches deep, leave rough, cover with gymsum and strawy manure, water and allow to mellow. • Bananas are more likely to bear fruit if the trunk does not die back in winter. Cut banana stalks back to six feet, wrap with newspaper and burlap. • Continue mulching for winter. Build up a thick top mulch to protect roots from freezing and winter drying. Don’t throw away those pine tree needles; they make great acidic mulch for azaleas, gardenias and next Spring’s impatiens. • Place pansies in beds after weather has cooled. Use a little blood meat mixed in soil under each plant. • Now is the best time to plant trees and shrubs.

KATY ISD BOARD CALLS FOR NOVEMBER BOND ELECTION
During the August Board work study meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees accepted a bond referendum recommendation by the Student Activity
Cross Creek Ranch
Facilities (SAF) Bond Committee and called for a Nov. 5th Bond election. It is projected that there will be no tax rate increase from the current rate of $.40 with the $99 million authorization. The authorization of the bond referendum by voters would fund the building of three new Student Activity Facilities: Agricultural Sciences Center - $25 million The District has outgrown the current L.D. Robinson Pavilion and room for growth or expanded instructional opportunities is limited. Developing an Agricultural Sciences Center at the current Gerald D. Young facility on KatyHockley Road will address student safety and convenience; reduce animal safety risk caused by travel; address the negative impact on Katy HS and Leonard Merrell Center operations and allow for strategic investment in a long-term solution. STEM Project Center - $4.5 million The STEM Project Center will provide additional classroom and project space for students engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses and activities. It will provide increased space for students to conduct large-scale experiments such as robotics and would lend itself to a variety of engineering projects such as boats, catapults and chip manufacturing. Physics teachers would also have the ability to video a large-scale demonstration at the S.T.E.M. Center while students are viewing from their classroom. 14,000 Seat Stadium - $69.5 million A second stadium will address scheduling issues that will become increasingly difficult as future high schools are opened. Six Katy ISD high schools currently participate in varsity football, soccer and marching contests at Rhodes Stadium. With the opening of Tompkins High School, Katy ISD will schedule seven varsity football teams into Rhodes Stadium beginning in August of 2014. Scheduling seven schools in Rhodes Stadium will create a challenge for the District to comply with the U.I.L. 5-day rule.
Life is a journey meant to be shared.

KATY ISD NEW WEBSITE HOMEPAGE LAUNCHED
Dear Katy ISD Family, Katy ISD is proud to announce the launch of its new website homepage and the gradual transition of department and campus websites over the course of the fall semester. The new homepage is the culmination of a yearlong initiative to gather feedback and direction from parents, staff and other Katy stakeholders about how the District’s website could better serve our community’s needs. What emerged is a clean design, consistent and improved navigation, an upgrade to the technology that supports the site and quick acess to our most frequently visited District-wide webpages.

Department pages and campus websites will be transitioned to the new homepage format during the fall semester. In the meantime, some department pages and all campus websites will be temporarily linked to the older version of the District’s website. Some examples of pages in which visitors will experience redirects to the old website are the Transportation, Teaching & Learning and Special Education pages. We greatly appreciate your patience as we continue to improve upon the website to make it a better experience for all who visit it. Wishing you a successful school year, Katy ISD Technology Department.

Theater, Arts & Music MILDRED’S UMBRELLA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES ITS 2013-2014 SEASON!
CARNIVAL ROUND THE CENTRAL FIGURE by Diana Amsterdam. Regional Premier - November 7-23, 2013. A wild ride through theatrical terrain that sears the senses and impacts the audience at a visceral place, which also manages to be hilariously funny and heartbreakingly real in the five core scenes of a young woman’s visit to the death bed of her friend. Her moment of acknowledgment and comfort comes hard in the face of denial, moralizing, insane positive thinking, desperate chit chat and the existential fears we all harbor about the end moments of life - the great mystery.

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920’s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-4974904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org. PS: We are starting rehearsal for this Christmas Show. You have time to prepare for it.

BE A MENTOR AND GIVE A CHILD THE POWER OF A SECOND CHANCE
CROSSROADS mentors are regular people, just like you, who help prevent or reduce youth involvement with the juvenile justice system by fostering supportive mentoring relationships. These young people range from the ages of 10-17. The goal is to reduce juvenile crime and turn these young lives around to develop a positive attitude for positive results. Our mentors must be 21 years of age, willing to commit to one hour a week for one year and submit to fingerprinting and a background check. There are many zip codes available in and around the Katy area with suitable times of the week for mentors to meet with their assigned youth. We are in need of loving and caring mentors for young people that feel as though they are alone in this world. Please consider devoting a minimum of one hour a week that could possibly change a child’s life forever. Many times you are their only hope. Contact Denise Kennedy at CrossroadsVolunteer@hcjpd.hctx.net or 713-295-2779. For more information on our mentorship program, visit our website at www.crossroads-volunteers.org.

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator. FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact email@example.com or see www. ncjwhouston.org. Join NCJW in celebrating 100 years of helping women, children and families in Houston through advocacy and community service. Celebrate our 100th anniversary with us at the Royal Sonesta Hotel on November 23, 2013 (firstname.lastname@example.org).

The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the website at www.ftbendliteracy. org.
