The donation was a result of proceeds from the 7th Annual Katy Wine Fest, held on November 9, 2012. The $25,000 grant will help underwrite the next steps in the Brookwood Community’s evolving training and outreach programs, as well as a future Center for Learning. The goal of these ventures is to share Brookwood’s philosophy, methods and best practices with others working in the broader field of disabilities and to provide venues for meaningful exchange with like-minded organizations and ministries. The 8th Annual Katy Wine Fest, scheduled for Friday, November 8, 2013, will once again benefit The Brookwood Community. The event will be held at The Tuscany Villa from 7 PM to 11 PM. Restless November, a local teen rock band from the Katy area, performed at CureFest 2013 on behalf of Katy Rocks, Inc. at the Humble Civic Center in August. This all-day music festival raised funds for brain cancer research and included many talented artists including Jason Chapman, Chris Boise, Darrell Supercinski, Elena and Country Music Artist, John Michael Montgomery. TRASH & RECYCLING INFORMATION
Effective April 1, 2013, trash service has been changed to one day per week curb service. Trash day is on Tuesday and you should place your trash at the curb in the receptacle provided by Republic Waste. Please note you may also place lawn debris in trash bags and bundled and tied limbs at curb for pick up. Heavy trash day will also be on Tuesdays. There has been no change to the recycling schedule, which will remain on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month. Republic Services is providing a blue 95-gallon cart for recycling. If you need a cart, please call Republic Services and they will provide one with no additional charge. • Set the cart within 5 feet from the curb by 7:00 AM • Wheel-side of cart should face home and the cart opening toward the street • Do not overfill the cart; the lid must be closed • Minimum distance of 3 feet from any obstacle (car, mailbox, heavy trash, etc.)

Heavy trash will be collected Tuesday for those items that will not fit in your trash containers. • Heavy Trash: Appliances, hot water heaters, mattresses, heavy or large volumes of bagged yard waste and other white goods appropriate for disposal, shall be placed within five feet of the curbside and will be collected on the same day as your regular trash. • All branches and tree limbs must be cut to 4 foot lengths and tied in small bundles that can be lifted and handled by a single person. Bundles should be no larger than eighteen inches in diameter and weigh no more than forty pounds. • Refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers or items that contain CFC’s (Freon), by law must have the gas removed by a licensed technician and be red tagged prior to collection. Republic Services will collect and dispose of all your residential garbage unless restricted by law or if the item would cause damage to the collection equipment. Listed are some items that are restricted: cross ties, tires, solvents, paint, petroleum products, pool chemicals, fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides, hazardous materials/chemicals, logs or stumps, car batteries, soil, rocks, concrete, carpet, carpet padding, construction material, medical waste, medical sharps and closed containers. Please make note on your “gate access request form” how many stickers are needed for your family. These stickers are numbered for accountability and are tied to your address. You must take the stickers off and mail them back to Crest Management when you move from the community or sell the vehicle. The stickers will not be reused, but this will keep unauthorized persons from visiting the community without being noticed. Katy Animal Control works in conjunction with the Katy Police Department enforcing City and State laws. Lost pets are kept in a 3,000 sq. ft. temperature controlled, state-inspected building. The Katy Animal Shelter does not adopt out animals, therefore, it is extremely important that pets are licensed and vaccinated at six months of age. The department strives to make the licensing process as convenient as possible and can be scheduled by calling the shelter at 281-391-4740 or email dbrown@katypd.com. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM and can be reached at 281391-4740 (all calls are logged and returned, so please leave a message). benefiting Pediatric Cancer Victims It’s that time once more when the members of the Katy, TX based Bayou Belles Charity Service Organization, Inc. are tirelessly working to organize our Fourth Annual Charity Gala scheduled for October 12, 2013. The theme this year will be “ALL THAT GLITTERS ISN’T GOLD” benefiting Pediatric Cancer Victims. The venue (TBA). Our organization will be partnering with Texas Children’s Pediatric Cancer Center to select local families who are struggling with the expenses of having a very sick child. This heartfelt fundraiser will include an elegant dinner, cocktails, dancing and silent auction. This fundraiser is being dedicated to, but in NO way benefit: In Loving Memory of Jerald Paul Auzenne, Sr. As you may recall, BBCSO, Inc. is a (non-profit 501(c)3) and is “Grass Roots” in nature. THE LONE STAR SYMPHONIC BAND The Lone Star Symphonic Band to launched its 21 Season in August. The group recently recorded a Christmas themed CD, which will be available for purchase at all concerts this season. The Band is based in west Houston, with rehearsals and concerts held at CrossPoint Community Church off of Westgreen Blvd. and I-10 (The Katy Freeway). Five concerts are slated for the Lone Star Symphonic Band’s 21st Season, with tickets for all concerts available on the Band’s website, www.lssband.org, for $5.50 each and will be available the day of the concert at the door for $10 each. All concerts begin at 4:00 PM and feature the Lone Star Dixieland Band for 30 minutes prior to the main performance in the foyer. On October 13, 2013, the Band will perform a concert titled “Life in Living Color.” All selections performed will feature life’s many colors. December 15, 2013 will be the Lone Star Symphonic Band’s Christmas and Hanukkah themed concert, titled “Celebrate the Season.” On March 2, 2014, the Band will perform “Lone Star,” a concert as big as Texas! The Lone Star Symphonic Band will perform on May 4, 2014, a spring-filled concert titled “Spring into Fun!” The annual patriotic concert, titled “We Hold These Truths,” will be held on June 29, 2014. The Lone Star Symphonic Band is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to bringing performances of artistic merit to the Houston metropolitan area. Founded in 1993 as the West Houston Concert Band, the band is comprised of musicians from all walks of life and instills the value that music is a life-long event, continuing well beyond high school and college. We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. A focus on children, youth and music motivated the congregation of St. Peter’s to raise $5.2 million to provide additional space for a children’s worship center, an expanded student center and a new rehearsal space for the church’s choirs and orchestra. Ground was broken for this building project on April 14th. In addition, the funds will allow for renovations to the sanctuary, nursery and welcome center. Construction is projected to be finished in early 2014. Dr. Pat Sparks joined St. Peter’s as the new senior pastor at the same time the construction was beginning. “On my first Sunday after I was appointed as St. Peter’s pastor, we had our groundbreaking service,” he said. “Now as I look outside of our office windows, the construction is really ramping up. It is exciting to see the walls on the new children’s worship building going up. I look forward to being a part of what God will be doing in the lives of the people who will worship, learn and play in these new facilities.” Mike Eastland, chairman of the Building Committee, said the building program will expand the vital children’s ministry area at St. Peter’s. “We will reach more children with our new children’s worship facility and the centrally located, enhanced nursery space will better serve families in both our contemporary and traditional services.”

The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. RUOK PROGRAM Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computergenerated call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning,

at about the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens of their community. KATY ISD BOARD CALLS FOR NOVEMBER BOND ELECTION During the August Board work study meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees accepted a bond referendum recommendation by the Student Activity Facilities (SAF) Bond Committee and called for a Nov. 5th Bond election. It is projected that there will be no tax rate increase from the current rate of $.40 with the $99 million authorization. The authorization of the bond referendum by voters would fund the building of three new Student Activity Facilities: Agricultural Sciences Center - $25 million The District has outgrown the current L.D. Robinson Pavilion and room for growth or expanded instructional opportunities is limited. Developing an Agricultural Sciences Center at the current Gerald D. Young facility on Katy-Hockley Road will address student safety and convenience; reduce animal safety risk caused by travel; address the negative impact on Katy HS and Leonard Merrell Center operations and allow for strategic investment in a long-term solution. STEM Project Center - $4.5 million The STEM Project Center will provide additional classroom and project space for students engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses and activities. It will provide increased space for students to conduct largescale experiments such as robotics and would lend itself to a variety of engineering projects such as boats, catapults and chip manufacturing. Physics teachers would also have the ability to video a large-scale demonstration at the S.T.E.M.

SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT RETURNS TO KATY FOR 2014 Katy ISD announced recently that the Southland Conference basketball tournament will return to the Merrell Center on March 12 - 15, 2014. The men’s and women’s basketball tournament brings more than 15,000 visitors to the Katy area each March and is responsible for approximately 2,000 nightly rooms in local hotels. “The Southland Conference is again very pleased to bring our marquee Basketball Tournament to Katy and the
Merrell Center,” said Tom Burnett, commissioner of the Southland Conference. “We’ve had a successful run over the last six years in Katy and the seventh tournament at the Merrell Center should be even more exciting for the teams and fans!” The Conference provides an opportunity for Katy ISD students to participate in a variety of volunteer capacities such as ball boys/girls and student trainers. Students can also earn hours for the National Honor Society. “This event is a great opportunity for Katy ISD students to participate in a major collegiate sporting event. The Southland Conference puts on a first class event and we’re thrilled to have them back to the Katy area,” said Ben Rolens, general manager of the Merrell Center.
