OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) program is dedicated to increasing awareness about the importance of the early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide campaign. NBCAM started as a weeklong campaign in 1985 with 2 founding members. Today the American Cancer Society is one of many national public service organizations, professional associations and government agencies that form the NBCAM Board of Sponsors. During October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the member organizations of the Board of Sponsors join forces to spread the message that early detection of breast cancer followed by prompt treatment saves lives. The American Cancer Society recommends early detections. Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. The third Friday in October each year is National Mammography Day, first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1993. On this day or throughout the month, women are encouraged to make a mammography appointment. To find a facility in your area, please call: American Cancer Society (800) 227-2345 National Cancer Institute (800) 4-CANCER Or visit nbcam.org or www.cancer.org for more information. FIGHT THE BITE! REDUCE YOUR RISK

BBQs, gardening, swimming pools, hikes... and mosquitoes. Enjoy the outdoors, but remember to protect yourself and your family from mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile Virus. Your best defense against being bitten is simply to be prepared. Help Fight the Bite! • When outdoors, use an insect repellent containing the active ingredient DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 to reduce exposure to mosquito bites. Always apply as directed on the label. Do not allow young children to apply repellent to themselves; have an adult do it for them. • If possible, wear long-sleeved clothing and long pants when outdoors at dawn and dusk, which are peak mosquito biting times. • Place mosquito netting over infant carriers when you are outdoors with infants. • Don’t feed the storm drains. Sweep up lawn clippings, leaves and tree limbs from sidewalks and driveways. • Remove/empty containers that can hold water such as flowerpots, buckets, tires, toys and plastic swimming pools. Birdbaths and pet water bowls should be changed at least twice a week. • Cover your boat or store in a covered place. Drain any standing water and make sure the bilge pump is working. Turn over canoes, kayaks and small boats to store upside down. • Keep rain gutters clean and draining and repair any outdoor household leaks. • When watering the lawn, be aware of any excess water that may accumulate. Fill in low areas around the yard. • When mosquitoes are noticed in your yard, spray with an outdoor mosquito spray. Be sure to use according to directions on the label. To control mosquitoes in your house, use a “flying insect spray.” Be sure to use according to directions on the label. • Household pets can be exposed to West Nile Virus (WNV). Contact your veterinarian for more information. Source: Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services

GARDENING TIPS FOR OCTOBER

• Dig and store caladiums before the foliage dies. Allow the bulbs to dry in the shade, shake off the dried soil and dust with sulphur to control fungus. Store by hanging in open mesh bags or old panty hose. • Flowers planted for spring can begin when the temperatures are going to stay cooler. Shrubs and trees can be planted now. Woody plants concentrate on root growth through the winter and the more headstart they can get before summer, the better. • October 15th is about the time for dividing and planting daylilies. • Watch out for brown patch in St. Augustine grass. These circular brown patches are caused by a fungus that is activated by moist cool weather. Control with Daconil. • If you need to do any pruning, do it early in the month. The re-growth stimulated by pruning needs to harden off before that odd-ball frost of Halloween. Prune fruit trees when leaves begin to fall. Remove all dead, weak and over-crowded growth. Tip back main branches to control size and shape. Spray w/dormant oil when temperature is between 30-60 degrees. • Cut back tops of perennials after they have bloomed. Divide roots and transplant anytime from now until March, the earlier the better. • Get the ant baits down. This will greatly reduce your spring populations. • Clover left over from last year may be growing. It’s best to hit it with the post-emerge herbicides in October and November. At least two applications are usually needed, even if done this early. • For color throughout the winter, begin planting pansies.

It will provide increased space for students to conduct large-scale experiments such as robotics and would lend itself to a variety of engineering projects such as boats, catapults and chip manufacturing. Physics teachers would also have the ability to video a large-scale demonstration at the S.T.E.M. Center while students are viewing from their classroom. 14,000 Seat Stadium - $69.5 million A second stadium will address scheduling issues that will become increasingly difficult as future high schools are opened. Six Katy ISD high schools currently participate in varsity football, soccer and marching contests at Rhodes Stadium. With the opening of Tompkins High School, Katy ISD will schedule seven varsity football teams into Rhodes Stadium beginning in August of 2014. Scheduling seven schools in Rhodes Stadium will create a challenge for the District to comply with the U.I.L. 5-day rule. KATY ISD’S PARTNERS IN EDUCATION DEBUTS “HEY VO!”

If you’ve ever thought about being someone’s sweetheart, Katy ISD invites you to watch “Hey VO!” (http://vimeo.com/72830951) - the district’s new invitation to volunteers. Starring Cinco Ranch High School Choir Director David Lee and choreographed by Taylor Drill Team Coach Darby Boyd, the film features dancers and singers from all seven Katy ISD high schools and a cameo by Superintendent Alton Frailey. This cinematic call to action is a reminder that volunteering is fun and that every Katy ISD campus needs and welcomes volunteers. Last year’s volunteer video, “Call Us Maybe,” won the prestigious Crystal Award from the Texas Schools Public Relations Association.

ST. PETER’S

UNITED METHODIST CHURCH EXPANDS KATY CAMPUS

www.refinishingdoor.com

Driving down Kingsland Blvd., it’s obvious that changes are taking place at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Katy. New walls are peeking up from behind construction fencing and dump trucks and cement trucks line up periodically as footings are dug and foundations are poured.

CONCRETE PATIOS • PAVER PATIOS • STAMP OVERLAYS

A focus on children, youth and music motivated the congregation of St. Peter’s to raise $5.2 million to provide additional space for a children’s worship center, an expanded student center and a new rehearsal space for the church’s choirs and orchestra. Ground was broken for this building project on April 14th. In addition, the funds will allow for renovations to the sanctuary, nursery and welcome center. Construction is projected to be finished in early 2014.

Senior Church Groups KINGSLAND BAPTIST CHURCH WEEKLY EVENTS FOR ADULT 55+

Game Day - Meet with us every Wednesday in the Crawford Fellowship Hall from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM as we fellowship around the table playing Chicken Foot, Scrabble, Cards, etc. Senior Aerobics offered at Kingsland Baptist Church Please join our Adult 55+ exercise class at 11:00 - 11:45 AM each Thursday morning in the gym at Kingsland Baptist Church. Peggy Skaggs is our trained and certified instructor and the class is open to all levels.

Dr. Pat Sparks joined St. Peter’s as the new senior pastor at the same time the construction was beginning. “On my first Sunday after I was appointed as St. Peter’s pastor, we had our groundbreaking service,” he said. “Now as I look outside of our office windows, the construction is really ramping up. It is exciting to see the walls on the new children’s worship building going up. I look forward to being a part of what God will be doing in the lives of the people who will worship, learn and play in these new facilities.” Mike Eastland, chairman of the Building Committee, said the building program will expand the vital children’s ministry area at St. Peter’s. “We will reach more children with our new children’s worship facility and the centrally located, enhanced nursery space will better serve families in both our contemporary and traditional services.” The new rehearsal space will allow the various choirs, ensembles and orchestra to assemble comfortably as they prepare for worship on Sunday mornings and also will provide storage areas for the musicians’ equipment. “The Music Department is grateful to the people of St. Peter’s who appreciate and support our music ministry,” said David Galasso, director of music ministries. “The financial support that will make this expansion possible is an expression of appreciation that inspires us to work even harder as we offer our musical gifts to God,” he said.

PATRIOT DAY 5K – AMERICA’S RUN

Patriot Day 5K has a very simple mission - to educate people about Patriot Day. In 2002, Patriot Day was designated as a Day of Remembrance honoring those killed by the terrorist attacks of September 11th. There are still many people across the United States who do not know about Patriot Day and what it means. We would like to change that. Join us Saturday, September 28th, at Minute Maid Park (501 Crawford St., Houston, TX 77002) for this chip-timed, certified 5K course. Our goal is to honor the victims of 9/11 and raise awareness for Patriot Day and its meaning. We will also be raising money for our very worthy charity Partners: Voices of September 11th, 9/12 Generation, Wounded Warriors, Jeep’s S.A.F.E.

Theatre, Arts & Music SEVEN LAKES HIGH SCHOOL PRESENT TWELVE ANGRY JURORS

Seven Lakes High School’s award winning Studio VII Theatre Company will present Twelve Angry Jurors, based on the Emmy award winning teleplay by Reginald Rose and adapted for the stage by Sherman Sergel, on October 10-12, 2013, in the SLHS Performing Arts Center (PAC). Go inside the Jury Room and witness first-hand the dilemma of 12 jurors as they decide the fate of a 19-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his father. What looks to be an open-and-shut case unravels when Juror #8 is the sole holdout of the initial guilty vote. Tempers flare, arguments grow heated and they become “Twelve Angry Jurors.” Will they end up finding the defendant innocent or guilty? Will they sentence him to death? How will their personal biases and prejudices affect deliberations? Will “reasonable doubt” result in a “hung jury?” Don’t miss out on all the intense legal drama of Twelve Angry Jurors, presented by Studio VII Theatre Company, directed by Chocs Landgrebe, with Technical Direction by Joshua Heerssen. Performances will be held October 10th, 11th and 12th, at 7 PM, each day, with a 2 PM Matinee on October 12th. Presale Reserved General Admission Tickets go on sale the week of September 30th. Prices are $8 for Students, $10 for Adults and $5 for KISD Gold Card holders. PAC Box office hours are from 10 AM-3 PM Monday through Friday. Advance Ticket reservations can also be made by calling the box office at 281-237-2836. Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. We have been performing in the Houston area for over 35 years. We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year includes songs from the 1920’s, as well as a Spiritual Medley that will start your toes tapping. Come visit any Friday. We would love to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please call Pat at 281-4974904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org. SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day.

FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses.

Catherine Wilder, DDS Lauren Shepard, DDS

Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www. ncjwhouston.org. Join NCJW in celebrating 100 years of helping women, children and families in Houston through advocacy and community service. Celebrate our 100th anniversary with us at the Royal Sonesta Hotel on November 23, 2013 (specialevents@ncjwhouston.org).
