BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS

STREET LIGHTS

The monthly Board of Directors meeting for Williamsburg Colony generally are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 6:00 PM, at the clubhouse located at 2315 John Crump. Anyone that would like to attend a meeting and address the Board should contact PCMI’s office 281-870-0585, at least a week prior to the meeting so that you can be included on the agenda. ~ WCMA

Your Association pays for your streetlights from your annual dues, whether they work or not. If a light is out in your area, please call 713-207-2222 and report it. Each light pole should have a number on it. When reporting the out or malfunctioning light, give them the pole number and closest street address. We want all of our lights to work. A lighted area is a safer area.

CURFEW REMINDER

We would like to remind residents that being in Harris County means those under the age of 18 must not be roaming the streets after midnight. Any children spotted after midnight should be reported to the Constables at 281-463-6666. Most of the trouble we have in the subdivision that is attributed to mischievous minors occurs after the curfew. Once park hours are posted, anyone in the park after hours will be charged with trespassing.

GARAGE SALE SIGNS

To all Williamsburg Colony residents, garage sales are great, we can increase our attic and closet space, locate things we forgot that we had and most important, make a few extra bucks. The one thing that is sometimes forgotten is the placement and removal of our garage sale signs. So please neighbors, if and when you have a garage sale, let’s try and remember not to place garage sale signs on any of our community signs or poles. Also, remove signs that are staked when your garage sale is complete. Cleaner streets do make a difference.

Restraint is defined as the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by human being who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question. 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle. 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street.”

Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”

Katy-Fort Bend

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.

N

Oh Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. Psalms 34:3

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

SWEET WATERMELON ICE RECIPE

3 cups fresh watermelon juice 3 Tbsp sugar 2 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice

Instructions Pour the watermelon juice into a shallow glass baking dish. Add the sugar and lemon juice and stir well. Place the dish in the freezer and chill. Remove the pan every 1/2 hour and stir. The juice will form light, grainy ice crystals as it freezes. Repeat this process until the juice is fully frozen, about 4 hours, depending on the temperature of your freezer. You can also use an ice cream maker, following the manufacturer’s directions. Serve immediately or store in the freezer in a covered container up to several weeks. This recipe makes a refreshing ice that is perfect for hot weather. Yield: 4 to 6 servings Credits: Lois Ellen Frank posted on About.com

GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. Follow up with a dose of fertilizer the first week of September. • Plants come out of summer rest and go crazy. Insect populations explode as we get into cooler temperatures. Diseases that have been dormant wake up. - Citrus, croton, avocado and mango are susceptible to spider mites and thrips. Discourage them with a strong jet of water from a hose directed to the undersides of the leaves. - Hibiscus, citrus, palms, gardenia and ixora are susceptible to scale and mealybug. • Winter vegetable gardens and perennials get planted. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Fire ants baits should be put out in September-October to lessen the number of eggs that make it to Spring. • St. Augustine grass gets its fall fertilizer during September. Continue to mow at maximum height. You want to leave a lot of leaf surface to produce carbohydrate reserves for the winter. • Keep an eye out for sod webworms. First sign of them is grass that appears to stop growing. You need to get them early for biological controls to work. When the caterpillars are only 1/4 inch, Bacillus thuringiensis applications can slow them. Bt is a bacteria that works on the caterpillars’ digestive systems and makes them stop feeding. Do the application late in the day. The larvae feed at night and you want them to get nice fresh Bt. • When the heat and drought end, the weather could bring brown patch disease in the St. Augustine grass. Watch for yellowish spots if the nights drop into the 60’s and days stay in the 80’s. • Get any pruning of hedges and such done now. You want the flush of new growth to be hardened-off before the end of October. Tree pruning should be put off until winter, when the trees are dormant. • Pre-emerge herbicide applications targeting annual bluegrass and the earlier-germinating winter broadleaf weeds needed to be put out starting in mid-August.

281-617-2231 NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH SEPTEMBER 15TH - OCTOBER 15TH

Each year, from September 15th to October 15th, the United States celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month to recognize the economic, cultural and social contributions of the more than 44.3 million Latinos residing in the U.S. The dates of Hispanic Heritage Month were selected to include the Independence Day celebrations of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile and to incorporate October 12th, Día de la Raza, a holiday celebrated throughout Latin America to observe the colonization, exploration and multicultural heritage of the Americas. How to celebrate: • Visit a museum or gallery that has a Hispanic Heritage Monthrelated exhibit. You might learn about Hispanic artists, musicians or scientists who contributed to Hispanic culture around the world. • Go to your neighborhood bookstore or library to hear a lecture about Hispanic history. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about any one of the 21 countries represented by Hispanic society. • Attend a Hispanic dance performance or a Latin music concert. Take in the rhythm of the music or watch dancers move to the Latin beat. Or take dance lessons yourself, such as a salsa-dancing lesson. Ask ahead to find out whether or not you will need a partner for the class. • Watch a film in Spanish (with or without subtitles), see a play or musical related to a Hispanic tradition or see a performance put on by Hispanic Americans. If you don’t speak Spanish, learning a few words could open up a whole new world to you. • Volunteer for a Hispanic-related club such as a Mexican cooking club, Spanish literature group or Puerto Rican singles club. Begin writing for a publication written in Spanish or teach ESL. Whatever you choose, get involved in your community as a way to celebrate Hispanic heritage.

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL LITERACY MONTH

Millions of people have difficulty reading. That’s because, despite what many people think, literacy issues are not just relegated to children and young adults. To improve literacy in America, we must consider readers of all ages and backgrounds. Here are some tips to help you improve and encourage reading and literacy. Here’s How: 1. Read books every day and let people see you do it. You may be a role model (to your child, your niece or nephew or some other individual in your family or circle of acquaintances). 2. Get involved with your local library. Many libraries offer literacy programs, which encourage reading in your community. See what you can do to help. 3. Talk about reading. Ask questions about what the individuals in your life are reading. Check out www.Read3Zero.org for fun tips!

GRANDPARENTS DAY

This day has a threefold purpose: • To honor grandparents • To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children. • To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer. The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. As Grandparents Day approaches, help children and/or grandchildren to identify and date all photos in old family albums. Many happy memories can be derived from this. Everyone is a grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this day - a time to discover one’s roots and learn patience, understanding and appreciation for the elderly. Many times, only grandparents have answers to questions about family histories. When this information is passed down to the grandchildren, everyone can be assured of his heritage being preserved. Most important, Grandparents Day can signify a loving spirit that lives within us throughout the year, a spirit of love and respect for our elders. Grandparents Day is the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations. There are many, many elderly who are not fortunate enough to have family nearby. The need is increasing every day to fill the void of their loneliness. In every neighborhood, there are elderly who would love an opportunity to be a Foster Grandparent. Parents, churches, schools and senior organizations, help children to adopt a grandparent! Source: www.grandparents-day.com

BOARD APPROVES CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR PROPOSED SECOND STADIUM

During its regular July meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved the conceptual design for the proposed second stadium. The stadium project is one of three projects being considered for the District’s Student Activities Facilities referendum this fall. Members of the community, as well as Katy ISD end users and support staff attended a two-day design workshop held on June 26th - 27th and developed the conceptual design presented at the July 15th Board Work Study meeting. The second stadium would support student growth and success with additional athletic and fine arts support facilities at the secondary level within the District. PBK Architects were deemed best qualified for the stadium project, having successfully completed numerous stadium projects across the state, including multiple projects at the Rhodes stadium complex. Two other architectural firms have been selected for the STEM Center and Agricultural Sciences Center that are also components of the Student Activities Facility Proposal. For more information on the proposed second stadium, visit the Katy ISD website.

BOARD NAMES NEW AREA ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT

During its regular July Board Meeting, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees named David Kendler as the new Area 3 Assistant Superintendent. Kendler is currently the principal at Taylor High School. David Kendler began his educational career in 1986 as a high school basketball coach at West Mesa High School. His experience includes serving as principal at Paul Revere High School and Sharpstown High School in Houston ISD. He has been in his current role as principal of Taylor High School since 2007. Kendler holds a bachelor’s degree in

kinesiology and physical education from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree in education administration from the University of New Mexico. He has received many honors throughout his career including Secondary Principal of the Year while in Houston ISD and the Texas Music Educators Distinguished Administrator Award.

Katy Independent School District announced its policy for providing free and reduced price meals for children eligible under the federal income guidelines for the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program. A copy of the policy may be viewed at www.squaremeals.com. Children living in households with incomes at or below the federally approved levels, based on household size, may be eligible for free or reduced price school meals. Transfer students approved for the program from another school district may either complete a Katy ISD application or provide documentation of their eligibility status. Foster children who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside. The Nutrition and Food Service Department encourages parents in all eligible households to complete an online application prior to the start of school. The online application can be found at the district website at www.katyisd.org. A Free and Reduced meal application form and an information letter was also distributed in the student’s first day packet. A paper application will not need to be completed if you submitted the application online. If your child was on the program at the end of the previous school year, they were eligible for the same benefit for the first 30 operating days of the new school year or until a new application is processed. They also hosted a flip-flop decorating workshop at the Krause Center with more than 40 residents. EF FOUNDATION FOR FOREIGN STUDY HIGH SCHOOL EXCHANGE STUDENTS

Tammala Baszile, international exchange coordinator for nonprofit EF Foundation for Foreign Study, the leader in high school exchange, is currently accepting applications for host families for the 2013-14 school year. Host families open their homes to a 15-18 year old from one of 25 countries around the world. Students come for one or two semesters and attend the local high school. Through the exchange experience, both student and family get the chance to learn about a new culture and promote global understanding, right here in this community. According to Ms. Baszile, EF Foundation host families represent the diversity of American culture - with varied economic, religious and social backgrounds. Among those who embrace the exchange experience are parents looking to give their children a glimpse of the world, without having to travel the globe. In addition, there are many successful host families who have no children or adult children who no longer live at home, who are looking for new ways to connect to their communities, while gaining fresh perspectives on the world. Host family applicants undergo a screening process to ensure that they are well suited for an exchange experience. To host, one adult in the household must be at least 25 years old. Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Foundation for Foreign Study is the leader in high school exchange. Committed to promoting international understanding and global awareness for over 30 years, EF Foundation brings more students to the United States each year than any other high school exchange program. Since 1979, the organization has matched over 100,000 enthusiastic students from around the world with caring host families across the United States. EF Foundation is designated by the United States Department of State as an Exchange Program Sponsor.

Want to help create a world with more birthdays and less cancer? The American Cancer Society is looking for passionate, committed volunteers to be a part of the 2014 Relay For Life of Katy planning committee! Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, seek community support and underwriting, coordinate the cancer survivor dinner, coordinate logistics, find refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment activities, engage students at local schools and more. Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track or park, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay. Relay For Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups and people from all walks of life - all aimed at celebrating the lives of those who have had cancer, remembering those lost and fighting back against the disease. If you would like to join the Relay For Life of Katy as a volunteer committee member, please plan to attend our informational meeting on Monday, September 23, 2013, at 6:30 PM, at the Cinco Ranch Library located at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd. in Katy. If you are not able to attend, please express your interest to Erin Kasperek at the American Cancer Society by emailing her at erin.kasperek@ cancer.org or calling 713-706-5652.
