PICK UP YOUR DOG’S WASTE

When walking your dog, please do not allow them to walk in people’s yards. In the event your dog does wander onto someone’s property and uses the bathroom please pick up all of the waste. A single gram (about the size of a dime) of dog feces contains 23 million fecal coliform bacteria. Dog feces may harbor dangerous bacteria and viruses such as: whipworms, roundworms, tapeworms, parvo, giardiasis, salmonellosis and cryptosporidiosis. Pet waste is not fertilizer. It actually kills plants and grasses. Improperly disposed of or left unchecked, dog waste pollutes our environment and can even filter into our water supply. Uncollected dog waste that washes into streams and storm drains is the #3 contributor to water contamination. Pick up your dog’s waste. Not only will it help the environment, but it will ensure you and your dog a clean and safe area to enjoy together!

CINCO RANCH LOST AND FOUND PETS NETWORKING VOLUNTEERS & SHORT-TERM FOSTERS NEEDED

With over 8,700 homes in Cinco Ranch, we need volunteers from each “neighborhood” to receive email blasts for lost and found pets in our community. Would you be willing to receive occasional emails when there is a lost or found pet in your area? We need additional caring, animal-friendly neighbors to help us network to get them back home quickly. If you would like to help reunite lost and found pets with their grateful families, please send your name and contact information to our volunteer coordinator at paigeh618@hotmail.com.

PARKING IN THE STREET

Did you know it is against Cinco Ranch Covenants for residents to park in the street (Article XII, Section 2(a))? Additionally, when a number of vehicles park in the street, emergency vehicles have a difficult task maneuvering down the street. Due to the size and clearance needs of these emergency vehicles, a street lined with parked cars obstructs the passage and delays response time. While it is understood that during certain events, vehicles parking on the street is an unavoidable circumstance, please be aware of clearance needed for traffic. Ask your guests to park their car as close to curb as possible and not line both sides of the street. Be a courteous neighbor by communicating you are having a gathering at your home and may need additional parking. Ask if they would mind guests parking in front of their homes to help eliminate the congestion on the street. Remember, parking on the street for residents is prohibited and can impact the ability of emergency services to reach you or a neighbor in an emergency. Your cooperation will ensure Cinco Ranch retains its reputation as the premiere area to live in.

DO YOU KNOW WHO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVE COMMITTEE (NRC) REPRESENTATIVES ARE? Did you know that each area of Cinco Ranch has Neighborhood Representative Committee (NRC) Representatives positions? While not

These are volunteers from your neighborhood. Your NRC rep is a tremendous source of information and a resource you should use. But, you have to know who your rep is, in order to contact him/her. A quick call to the Cinco Property Association Office at 281-599-0408 is all it takes to find out the name and contact information for your rep. All the NRC reps are trying to build contact lists to keep you informed, but they need you to reach out and let them know you want to be added to their contact list. Many NRC reps have started Facebook pages to help keep their neighbors informed. There are many issues facing Cinco Ranch that you should be aware of. Knowing who your NRC rep is, is one way to stay in the know. So call today and find out who your NRC rep is and contact them to let them know you want to be added to their listing.

HELP KEEP OUR LIGHTS ON

Cinco Ranch Residents pay a maintenance fee where a large portion includes the electricity to light our streets. Each streetlight costs the Cinco Ranch Associations approximately $30 dollars a month. This fee is billed to us whether the light is working or not. If you see a light(s) burned out, please help us by getting the number on the pole. You may submit the work order to Centerpoint Energy or report it to the Associations Office. To report the outage yourself you will either fill out the form available at: www.centerpointenergy.com/outage or you can call the information into Centerpoint Energy at 713-207-2222. The electronic form is much faster as you won’t be put on “hold.” You can also report dim lights, leaning poles, etc. on the electronic form. Copy the email to the Cinco Ranch Residential Office at: CincoRanchCustomerCare@pcmi-us.com so we can keep the list of lights reported. Thank you for your help in this matter. Cinco Residential Property Association, Inc.

PET LEASH LAWS IN THE CINCO RANCH AREA HARRIS COUNTY - LEASH LAW

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat or to allow any dog or cat to become a stray.”

August 2013

7

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following circumstances: 1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question. 2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle. 3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does not have access to sidewalk or street. While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly restrained. Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Harris County Precinct #5, Contract #87: 281-463-6666 Harris County Animal Control: 281-999-3191 Harris County Health Department, Rabies/Animal Control Section 2223 West Loop South, Houston, Texas 77027-3588 www.countypets.com

FT. BEND COUNTY - LEASH LAW

Laws written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property or kept on a leash make freeing a community of unrestrained and free-roaming animals easier. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies-infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the animal control program efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal become lost. Licensing also: • Ensures that rabies vaccination are current • Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident • Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal control program

VACCINATION

Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals and humans. To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly restrained please contact: Fort Bend County Animal Control - 1210 Blume Road Rosenberg, TX 77471 - 281-342-1512 - AnimalServices@co.fort-bend.tx.us.

Do you have a transformer in your yard? If you do, please do not directly surround it with mulch or dirt. Transformers must have the sides exposed so they can cool properly. Otherwise they will over heat and burn out. Also, the sides of a transformer can rust through due to mulch holding moisture against them. Please do your part and clear the area around transformers in your yard.

Bend County, call Road & Bridge at 800690-ROAD (800-690-7623) and if you are in Harris County, you can call 281463-8703 for Service Requests & Road Maintenance. If you see any curbs needing repair around the islands in the Cul de Sac or along the boulevards, please call and report these, too. On a related note, the driveway “apron” is the responsibility of the individual property owner, no matter who maintains your street. Also, the sidewalks adjoining residential lots are the responsibility of the owner. The association maintains sidewalks in common areas only. • Leaking fire hydrants or storm drain problems - Please contact your Water District. Cinco ST Environmental phone number is 281-398-8211.

DO NOT FEED THE DUCKS!

Recently, signs have been added to the area surrounding the lake at Lake Pointe advising residents not to feed the ducks at the park and lake. The duck population at Lake Pointe is a concern and feeding the ducks is encouraging the ducks to loiter. The ducks are a part of nature and the lake is a natural area, but feeding the ducks in this manner causes a duck population growth and subsequently the mess that goes along with it. Please keep this in mind the next time you are enjoying the park and lake. Thank you for your consideration and attention. - Management

DO YOU HAVE THIS PHONE NUMBER IN YOUR CELL PHONE?

Two phone numbers suggested you save in your cell phone are the nonemergency Harris County Precinct 5 Constables and Fort Bend County Sheriff’s numbers. 911 should always be used in case of an emergency, but many times we need to contact the Sheriff’s Department and need to do so quickly. Don’t hesitate to call the Sheriff’s Department if something in your neighborhood seems questionable. This will give our contract deputies probable cause to investigate. This would include suspicious vehicles (vehicles exhibiting unsafe or erratic driving behavior), suspicious persons or behavior, activity at you neighbors home when you know they are on vacation and anything else that may be out of the ordinary in your neighborhood. Don’t take a chance on you or your family’s safety. Harris County Precinct 5 Constables 281-463-6666 Fort Bend County Sheriff 281-341-4665

NRC REPRESENTATIVES WOULD LIKE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION

The Neighborhood Representative Committee is requesting residents to submit their contact information to their neighborhood rep. Your email is the best form of communication amongst the neighborhoods. Each representative will collect a listing for their neighborhoods to help with community communication. This information will be used for community awareness only.

PROTECT STORM DRAINS

Just one quart of motor oil can ruin the quality of 250,000 gallons of water. Decomposing leaves and grass clippings can cause large amounts of algae to grow which depletes the oxygen level in the water and can lead to fish kills. The blowing, sweeping or dumping of grass clippings and other pollutants down the storm drain is against Texas State Law punishable by a fine of $5,000 for each offense. PLEASE CALL 281-398-8211 TO REPORT OFFENDERS.

CINCO MUD 8 SAYS SPRUCE UP YOUR SPRINKLER SYSTEM AND SAVE

It’s been a long, hard winter for your yard. While your plants go dormant to cope with the colder weather, your sprinkler system can feel the effects of winter, too. Cracks in the pipes can lead to costly leaks and broken sprinkler heads can waste water and money. You could be losing up to 25,000 gallons of water and more than $90 over a six-month irrigation season - the cost of about 300 daffodil bulbs! Now is the perfect time to spruce up your irrigation system before you ramp up your watering efforts this spring and summer. To get started, follow these four simple steps - inspect, connect, direct and select: • Inspect. Check your system for clogged, broken or missing sprinkler heads. If you’re not the do-it-yourself type, go with a pro - look for an irrigation professional certified through a WaterSense labeled irrigation program.

• Connect. Examine points where the sprinkler heads connect to pipes/ hoses. If water is pooling in your landscape or you have large wet areas, you could have a leak in your system. A leak as small as the tip of a ballpoint pen (1/32nd of an inch) can waste about 6,300 gallons of water per month. • Direct. Are you watering the driveway, house or sidewalk instead of your yard? Redirect sprinklers to apply water only to your lawn or prized plants. • Select. An improperly scheduled irrigation controller can waste a lot of water and money. Update your system’s schedule with the seasons or select a WaterSense labeled controller to take the guesswork out of scheduling. Don’t forget to add “sprinkler spruce-up” to your spring cleaning list this year. Learn more about maintaining a water-smart yard by visiting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense website at www.epa.gov/ watersense/outdoor See www.cincomud8.com/documents.html for REBATE information.

Dogs and cats are much more susceptible than humans to hot weather related conditions such as dehydration and heat stroke. They have sweat glands only on their paws and mostly pant to cool themselves. Pets with “pushed-in” faces, like pugs, are especially prone to heat stroke as they cannot cool themselves as efficiently by panting. HEAT STROKE CAN BE FATAL. Dogs and cats can also suffer from sunburn. Fortunately, most of these problems can be easily prevented. Unfortunately, many pet guardians - even those who obviously cherish their four-legged family members - are unaware of these simple preventive measures. I’ve heard of a couple of fairly recent incidents in our area where dogs collapsed and died of heat stroke after being taken out for runs by their well-intentioned guardians. Here are some important hot weather safety tips:   • Exercise your pet during the cooler parts of the day and never after a meal. Always carry cold water for your pet and allow him to drink periodically - he might be feeling overheated, thirsty and fatigued even if you’re not. Allowing your pet to drink from a pool of standing water is not safe - it may be loaded with bacteria, virus particles and organisms like Giardia. Easily portable pet water dishes are widely available. Soaking your dog’s coat with cool (not cold) water before exercising may help, especially if she’s long-haired. • NEVER leave your pet alone in a vehicle. Even with a moderate outdoor temperature and open windows, the vehicle can quickly become a furnace. A pet can die within minutes. • Make sure your pet is well-conditioned for a particular activity. Be especially sensitive to overweight and old pets. Remember that our pets age much more rapidly than we do. • Never leave your pet standing on hot asphalt. It may burn his paws.

• For pets kept in the backyard or in a cat or dog “run,” provide plenty of water and shade. Bring your pet indoors during the hottest part of the day (which is most of the day during our summers)! Never leave your pet on a leash for prolonged periods. • Don’t shave your dog’s hair down to the skin. This takes away sun protection and may cause sunburn. • Biking and rollerblading with dogs on-leash is too hard on them, particularly in hot weather. In fact, in some cities (including those in cooler climates), it is against the bylaws to cycle with a pet on-leash. We can go much further on wheels before we tire out compared to our pets on their feet. Dogs will often push themselves to the point of collapse (and even death) to keep up with us.    HEAT STROKE IS AN EMERGENCY and can occur quickly. Signs are excessive panting, hot skin and dark pink or reddish gums. If these are present, soak your pet in cool water and take her immediately to the nearest veterinarian. Remember, prevention is key.   Amba Balu, MD

For more info., contact Pam Donnelly (281-725-0364) or Lorie Phillips (580-716-5066).

• Time now to make plans for fall landscaping projects. • Clean up flowerbeds of fallen foliage, yellowed leaves and dead wood. Light green leaves may signify lack of iron (chlorosis). Correct with iron cheleates. • Cut off old dead foliage on irises. Scratch in a little bone meal around the roots. • Prune roses to reshape and groom plants for fall growth. • Wait until November to plant petunias and pansies. • Chinch bug damage is obvious now. You will have areas of thin and/or dead turf where they weren’t brought under control. There is a new generation going now. This batch causes the most damage. Use Dursban to stop the damage. • Until the weather gets back to the 80’s, St. Augustine grass grows slowly. If you fill in with sod, don’t expect a fast turnaround. The sod may look like it’s not growing while it puts down roots. You will need to water the new sod often and deeply to get it started but this also creates a disease environment. Water early so the sun can dry the turf. • Now is a good time to work new beds. Till them up, add organic material, mix it in, then let them cure for a month or so. Add in any amendments like micro-nutrients. Keep the beds moist so the microorganisms have a favorable environment.

KATY ISD PREPARES FOR HURRICANE SEASON

Katy ISD is preparing for tropical weather hazards and the 2013 hurricane season that officially began June 1st. The district reminds families to prepare, as well by making a plan, putting together a hurricane survival kit and staying informed. The Houston region has many helpful resources to guide students, parents and school personnel through these three steps.

Beck Junior High School

“In order for Katy ISD to be ready for storms, we need our community to be informed and prepared,” said John Bremer, Katy ISD emergency management coordinator. “Prepared families help by allowing us time to close schools and secure the buildings well ahead of any impending threats. If families are prepared, then we can make better decisions about school operations.” The Texas Department of State Health Services has a number of tools for families to use, including a brochure on Hurricane Preparedness, an emergency supply checklist and a video on surviving disasters. The Ready Houston regional preparedness page also has helpful information on how to prepare for disasters, including hurricanes at: www.readyhoustontx.gov. “Make a plan, put together a survival kit and stay informed are three steps Katy ISD uses to prepare for hurricane season; these are the same steps students, parents and school personnel can use to be ready,” added Bremer. District preparations include annually reviewing and updating the tropical weather annex of the emergency operations plan; maintaining flood control features and inspecting roofs of the schools and making sure that emergency resources are available and ready should a storm threaten the Texas Gulf Coast. In order to respond ahead of any storm, Katy ISD stays informed by working closely with the National Weather Service and by listening to regional partners at the City of Katy, Harris County and Fort Bend County.

KATY REBELS-D’ADDIECO TEAM

The 9th/10th Grade Katy Rebels-D’Addieco team took first place at the June 8-9, 2013 Tournament for Hope in Austin, TX. This is now an incredible 5 first place finishes so far this year. In this tournament, the Rebels had key players missing and more key players battling through significant injury and they still managed to win the tournament. They showed some admirable grit and character to rise up as a team and pull together for the wins. The team shooting efficiency was well above their normal average all weekend, including a team record in both 2 pt. and 3 pt. percentage in the first game. The improved shooting, along with the typical disciplined defense, a steadily improving low post offense and domination on the glass were the main differences in the games. Congratulations to Allison, LaShanda, Kim, Sydney, Natalia, Kayla, Anna, Delaney, Myangiel and Emily on your fifth championship!

HOSTING A FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT IS EASIER THAN YOU MAY THINK

During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families.

Special Pals offers Adoptions, Boarding, and Clinic.... the ABC’s of being a great pet owner!

3830 Greenhouse Rd. Houston, TX 77084

281-579-PETS (7387) clinic@specialpalsshelter.org

In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is responsible for more than 60,000 students from 75 different countries spending the school year in the United States. There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2013-2014 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Please contact Heather Wells by email ayusakaty@gmail.com or by phone 281-770-3414.

SIRE, HOUSTON’S THERAPEUTIC EQUESTRIAN CENTERS

The only time our clients say they feel free is when they’re riding a horse in a brisk walk around the arena or driving a carriage through the wooded pastures or feel the nudge of a horse’s muzzle at their shoulder saying, “I’m glad to see you, my friend.” Nothing else can compare with therapy on horseback. Equine-assisted activities improve physical balance and coordination, mental acuity, emotional stability and social interactions. At SIRE, we see miracles on horseback happen every day. The work of our dedicated volunteers helps guarantee that children and adults with disabilities in the Greater Houston Area will have the programs they need to live longer, healthier, more productive lives. In addition to their weekly work in the arena, many of our volunteers donate their time and talents at fund-raising events such as our annual Ride-A-Thon and the yearly Trailblazers Luncheon. Volunteers are on hand during the NARHA on-site certification and annual SIRE Show-Off and volunteers are vital to our Clients’ successes at the Top Hands Horse Show, during the Houston Rodeo and competition at the regional and state Special Olympics. Therapeutic horseback riding creates a bond of success between the rider and their horse. Volunteers are their own personal cheering section and the instructor is their mentor and coach. Clients become more empowered and better equipped to fully live their lives, each day. To volunteer, please call one of our arenas and ask to speak with a volunteer coordinator. HOUSTON CHILDREN’S CHARITY

Join a group of people dedicated to improving the lives of children. If you are searching for a good cause to lend a hand to, you need look no further. Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered. Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. This is a great way for school age kids to get in community service hours. Do you have gently used children’s clothing, shoes and jackets? At Houston Children’s Charity we are setting up the “HCC Closet.” All of the items donated will be given to children – not sold at a retail store. Please contact our office at 713-524-2878 or visit our website www.houstonchildrenscharity.org for more information on our organization.

STANDUP FOR KIDS

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we want to help them get off the streets.

ADOPT A US SOLDIER

Adopt A US Soldier is a non-profit organization that seeks volunteers and donors to help show the brave men and women fighting for our freedom that their sacrifices will not go unnoticed. It connects supportive civilians with deployed soldiers and offers a channel by which to communicate encouragement and express gratitude to those serving in the United States Armed Forces. Adopt A US Soldier is sustained by its volunteer workforce located across the United States. After a supporter asked a soldier what they needed, his response was as follows: “No requests, just don’t want to be forgotten.” -LCPL O.J.T. III When registering for Adopt A US Soldier your involvement can range from writing letters and sending postcards, to mailing care packages full of items a soldier may need or want. Handwritten letters are most important and meaningful to soldiers. Adopt A US Soldier encourages civilians to adopt a soldier to show your support for those that are making sacrifices for our country. If interested, please go to www.adoptaussoldier.org to register.

SPECIAL PALS SUMMER CARE FOR ANIMALS

Special Pals Shelter wants to remind you to keep your animals hydrated and cool this summer. Leave your pets indoors as much as possible, since there’s no guarantee on how much shade they’ll get being left in the yard. Never leave your pet in the car; it only takes a few minutes for your animal to be exposed to deadly heat stroke, even if the windows are cracked! If you take your dog out for walks or runs, be sure to bring a bowl and a container of water and only exert them in the hours when the temps are lowest.
