Spring Yard Maintenance

Spring is here, it’s time to look after our yards and landscaping. Treat for weed growth before it takes over the yard, cut and edge your yards as needed, since growth is beginning as temperatures climb. If you have low hanging branches, carefully trim them back. You don’t want to get poked in the eye by a low hanging branch. If your grass is thin or gone below you trees, consider having the tree limbs thinned out to let more sun through to the grass below the trees. Let’s keep our community looking as good as it did last year, thanks.

FM 529 Construction Update

TXDOT began construction in late January on an eight mile section of FM 529 from Greenhouse Road (west of Sheffield) to Hwy. 290. The two-way middle turn lanes are being converted into channelized turn lanes, similar to what has been done on FM 1960 and south Hwy. 6. You will be limited by where you can make left turns across oncoming traffic, so pay attention to where you may have to make left turns, it may be easier to turn at a red light. Completion is expected by late 2013.

Queenston Road Construction Update

You may have noticed that a double left turn lane was completed in January 2013 southbound at Queenston and FM 529, thereby increasing traffic flow at that busy intersection.

2013 Maintenance Assessment

Homeowners received their 2013 Maintenance Assessments in the mail with the amount remaining the same at $550 per home. Payment was due by January 31, 2013. It is your responsibility to contact Crest Management if you do not receive your billing statement. Avoid late fees and interest by paying on time. Crest Management has changed banks thereby offering more payment options to homeowners such as free e-check and more credit cards are accepted. You can pay your assessments on-line at www.crest-management.com. If you want to pay early before the billing statements come out, please contact Crest Management for your account number as they have changed from last year. Green Arrow Recycling (on Hwy. 90 on left about a mile or so west of Katy High school) takes lots of stuff including batteries and yes, even glass, which is the easiest recyclable. All Katy schools take paper and cardboard and many churches do as well to fund activities.

Please note that Sheffield garbage pickup is twice weekly, on Tuesday and Friday (heavy trash day). Please DO NOT put your trash out at the curb until the night before pickup (Monday and Thursday). Tree trimmings should be in three-foot lengths and tied together if possible. Items such as televisions and computer monitors should not be put in the trash, but instead taken to a recycling center or to a trash site that takes these items. Harris County has special trash events 1-2 times yearly. Contact the Precinct 3 office for more information. Carpet and padding are also items that the trash company will not take. Please have your contractor dispose of these for you. Also, please do not store your trashcans in plain sight of the street. Keep them in your garage, behind your fence or elsewhere out of sight. Litter Pickup

Just a reminder, if you see trash in the neighborhood, please be a good neighbor and pick it up and dispose of it properly. Otherwise, then trash will either end up in someone’s shrubbery or trees or else get washed down the storm sewers, contributing to mosquito breeding and backing up of the storm drains in times of heavy rains. Thanks to those of you who regularly pick up other people’s litter.

Please remember that you are not allowed by law to let your dogs and cats run loose in the neighborhood. If caught, you may receive a ticket in the amount of up to $500 for such a violation (we have had residents receive such a ticket). If you see loose pets you can contact Harris County Animal Control. A number of Sheffield residents either walk their dogs or let their cats run loose. It is a violation of deed restrictions to let your pet leave their poop on another resident’s lawn or the common grounds (they belong to all of Sheffield’s residents). If your pet does have to go to the bathroom, please be courteous and carry a plastic bag (store bags or the newspaper delivery bag are great for this), pick up the pile by placing your hand inside the bag, grab the pile through the bag, tie the bag up and throw it in the garbage. Leaving your pet waste around encourages the possible spread of pet disease, such as Parvo, which can be life threatening, or parasites. A number of complaints have been made about stray cats roaming the neighborhood. To report stray or unconfined animals call 281999-3191, Monday thru Friday during the hours of 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM.

Chocolate Covered Easter Eggs

INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup butter, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened 2 1/2 pounds confectioners’ sugar 1 cup creamy peanut butter 1 cup flaked coconut 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 cups semisweet chocolate pieces 2 tablespoons shortening or vegetable oil (optional)

DIRECTIONS: In a large bowl, mix together the butter, vanilla, and cream cheese. Stir in confectioners’ sugar to make a workable dough. For best results, use your hands for mixing. Divide the dough into four parts. Leave one of the parts plain. To the second part, mix in peanut butter. Mix coconut into the third part, and cocoa powder into the last part. Roll each type of dough into egg shapes, and place on a waxed paper lined cookie sheet. Refrigerate until hard, at least an hour. Melt chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir occasionally until smooth. If the chocolate seems too thick for coating, stir in some of the shortening or oil until it thins. Dip the chilled candy eggs in chocolate, and return to the waxed paper lined sheet to set. ATTRACTING HUMMINGBIRDS TO YOUR GARDEN

There are several different ways to attract Hummingbirds into your garden. One way is by planting a Hummingbird garden with the appropriate flowers, trees, shrubs and vines. Your best bet is to attract them with high visibility and nectar plants as Hummingbirds do not have much sense of smell and the flowers that do attract hummingbirds have very little or no fragrance at all. Due to their long and tapered bills, Hummingbirds are able to hover in front of the flowers and sip the nectar with their tongue from the centre of tubular flowers. Hummingbirds eat soft insects and spiders to get their intake of protein. Protein is needed to help build their muscle mass. Therefore, it is best that you do not use pesticides in your garden, as this will kill off the small insects that the Hummingbirds rely on and they could even ingest the pesticides, which can make them sick or even kill the Hummingbird. Hummingbirds provide an essential role as pollinators as they fly from flower to flower for nectar.

Hanging a Hummingbird feeder is another way to attract Hummingbirds into your garden. Be patient as it may take some time before a Hummingbird finds your feeder in their hunt for food. Sugar-water feeders must remain clean and the syrup must be fresh or the Hummingbirds will not feed from them. Hummingbirds get their energy from nectar and the sugar-water from feeders. When mixing the sugar and water the rule of thumb is that it should be one part cane sugar to four parts of tap water or simply purchase premade liquid mixtures. The Hummingbird feeder needs to be cleaned out at least every three to four days. Also, clean it if it shows any signs of mold or if the syrup is cloudy. Try to refrain from using red food coloring in the water as it is not known if it is harmful to the Hummingbirds, purchase Hummingbird feeders that contain the color red instead. Another way to try to attract Hummingbirds to your garden is to place some ripened fruit close to the plants and/or feeders. The fruit will attract flies and the Hummingbirds will enjoy this extra protein in your garden. Researchers who followed nearly 5,000 people for 20 years found that happiness spreads through close social networks like a contagion. One person’s happiness can extend as far as three degrees of separation, the study found - “infecting” the friend of a friend’s friend. The researchers used data collected from the long-running Framingham Heart Study, which began in 1948 and includes multiple generations from the town of Framingham, Mass. The study’s extensive network allowed researchers to gather information about participants’ close relatives, friends and coworkers. People’s happiness was measured on a depression rating scale. The study found that a person’s happiness is determined, in part, by whether those around him or her are happy. The study also found that, although happiness can spread from person to person, it has a limited range.

SLUG CONTROL

Slug Pellets - Purchase some organic slug pellets and scatter them in the affected areas of your garden and flowerbeds. Only put down a few pellets, as it does not take much to kill a slug or a snail. Beer - Another method to help get rid of slugs and snails is to put some beer in a saucer or a flat plastic lid and place it on the ground amongst your plants. Another way is to pour some beer in a jar and place it in the ground so that the lip of the jar is level with the ground and the slugs and snails will fall in the jar of beer. Copper Band - Try placing a copper band around the tops of you flowerpots or plant containers. The copper band acts as a repellent to slugs and snails. Predators - Frogs, toads, ground beetles, hedgehogs and birds are all predators to slugs and snails. If you have any of the above in your garden encourage them to stay around, as they will help keep the population of slugs and snails down. places, try to trap the slugs by placing some flat pieces of slate, flat pieces of wood, rectangular building bricks and clay flowerpot trays in and around your flowerbeds/plant beds. The slugs will crawl up under these objects in the evenings and then in the mornings you can turn the object over and they are then exposed to the birds or simply collect and dispose of the slugs yourself. DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME

Benjamin Franklin is credited with the concept of Daylight Saving Time. The basic idea is to make the best use of daylight hours by shifting the clock forward in the Spring and backward in the Fall. Daylight Saving Time has been in use throughout much of the United States, Canada and Europe since World War I. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed an act into law whereby Daylight Saving Time begins on the last Sunday of April and ends on the last Sunday of October each year. However, any State can opt out of Daylight Saving Time by passing a State law. Hawaii does not observe Daylight Saving Time and neither does Arizona (although the Navajo Nation, in northeastern Arizona, does). For many years, most of Indiana did not observe Daylight Saving Time with the exception of 10 counties. Beginning in 2006, all of Indiana now observes Daylight Saving Time. However, the state remains divided in two time zones. Seventy-four counties (including state capital Indianapolis) are in the Eastern Time Zone. The 18 remaining counties are in the Central Time Zone.

ST PATRICK’S DAY

Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig is the Gaelic way of expressing a wish that you have all the blessings of St Patrick’s Day and the “luck of the Irish” to go with it. There are many humorous explanations for this expression. One comes from the legend of the “Little People” of the land, known as leprechauns. Finding or catching a leprechaun (who would then give you gold), was a lucky event that could only take place in Ireland. The Irish are descendants of great Celtic and Viking fighters and invaders. Their natural fighting skills often ensured survival and hence they became known as the “lucky” people, a classic case of making your own luck. But then, “The Luck of the Irish” may all be legend. So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that it was the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on St. Patrick’s Day. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDANT

Dear Parents and Community Members: The journey toward an equitable state funding system took a positive turn on February 4th when a Texas judge ruled the current system unconstitutional. District Judge John Dietz ruled in favor of the more than 600 Texas school districts - including Cypress-Fairbanks ISD - that filed a lawsuit against the state last year. In a statement regarding the ruling, Judge Dietz echoed many of the same comments he made while ruling the state funding system unconstitutional in 2005. He also voiced the same confusion for school finance that I and countless other educators, have felt for many years: “I have to say, there are 26 million Texans and I doubt there are 26 people in this state who understand this system,” he said. Judge Dietz also declared that “there has never been a more expeditious trial of a school finance case anywhere in the United States,” cementing my belief that this was the only logical decision to be made during this 44-day trial. I applaud Judge Dietz, the four plaintiff teams that defended the school districts’ case and the dozens of superintendents and school funding authorities who provided critical testimony in reaching this key decision. The final, written order in the case is expected to be delivered in early March, at which point the state has pledged to appeal the ruling to the Texas Supreme Court. Although there will be more obstacles before an agreeable solution is reached, we look forward to working with legislators and other state leaders as we plot the path toward equitable school finance. Cy-Hope provided an additional $1,000 grant to fund reinstatement of the district wide Choral Festival for fifth-grade students, last held in 2006. The upcoming event will be held April 11th at the Berry Center. “Our teachers and students are very excited to bring back this great tradition,” said Loretta Bourn, coordinator for elementary music. “It’s a special opportunity for 340 voices to come together to sing at the Berry Center.” The $10,000 donation is anticipated to benefit 16,564 elementary and 1,100 secondary students. A variety of needs will be addressed, including Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) registration assistance, music equipment for classrooms and additional master classes for secondary campuses. “We are grateful and excited that Cy-Hope has made this generous contribution for our students. This will benefit many of our programs which otherwise would not have this opportunity,” said Larry Matysiak, CFISD director of fine arts. “Our teachers and students are very excited about this wonderful grant, which will go a long way to help our students succeed.”

Smith Middle School is seeking community mentors to serve as positive role models for our students. Being a community mentor is extremely rewarding and only takes a commitment of 30 minutes to an hour a week to mentor/meet with one of our 6th, 7th or 8th grade students. Mentors must attend a one-time, district orientation before they begin mentoring at the school. Then, it just takes 30 minutes a week to truly make a difference in the life of a child. Kelechi Osemele, a 2007 graduate of Langham Creek High School, performed on a football player’s ultimate stage when he took the field for the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII. Osemele, a rookie offensive lineman, started all 16 regular season games as a right tackle before moving over to the starting left guard position for the playoffs.

“I remember he was doing one lap around the track for a physical fitness test, just walking and he tore the patella tendon in his knee. That’s the kind of condition he was in,” Woodfin said. “But by the time he graduated, he was an incredible physical specimen. We thought he had a chance to be something special.” Current Langham Creek head coach Todd Thompson maintains periodic contact with Osemele and has invited him back to speak to Lobo athletes. “We had him down here to speak to the team the day before the NFL Draft last spring and he was a great example for our kids,” Thompson said. “He’s a down-to-earth guy who’s a product of hard work and academic success. Osemele doesn’t have an ounce of arrogance in him; he’s just a good person.” Woodfin said he still keeps in touch with Osemele and is proud of his progress into a Super Bowl starter. “He’s really blossomed in a short amount of time this season,” he said. “He sticks out on the field and has done a fantastic job. I know he’s thrilled to death about this game and I’m thrilled to watch him perform on this level.”

The Langham Creek Colorguard debuted its 2013 indoor competitive show, “My Bleeding Heart” in February at the Cypress Lakes contest. The show, which is set to the music of The Moody Blues, showcases the group’s trademark precision with equipment in a sea of white sheer and 10’ tall moving props. “As always, the program will continue to grow and develop as the season progresses,” said longtime Director Tim Newburn. “But we are very pleased with the preparedness of this year’s group. They have such an increased sense of communication as performers and are taking the next steps in their dance training very seriously. They work both hard and smart and we couldn’t be more proud of them.” The current group, comprised only of Freshmen and Sophomores, placed second at their first outing and had the crowd wanting more. the event have been the envy of those who didn’t attend. This year’s Dutch oven cook-off had lots of entries and everyone enjoyed the results. All we can say about this year’s talent show is - you had to be there! Many thanks to Julie Mayer and her team for organizing the weekend! On March 2nd, Copper Corners Girls and their special guys will have a “Bella notte” at the “Me and My Guy” event. Plan to get dressed in your best for an exciting evening of fun, food, dancing, crafts and more - all with an Italian theme. A group of girls and adults from several troops paid a special visit to the Cypresswood Nursing and Rehabilitation facility on Feb. 9th. They assisted the residents in making “Valentine” Chinese lanterns and Valentine cards, decorated a Valentine mailbox and served cookies, brownies and other treats. Working and visiting together was a lot of fun and the results were really creative! We are already starting to make plans for a “Bridging event” this spring, as girls move on to new levels in Girl Scouting. As part of the bridging activities, older troops work with younger girls as they prepare to move on to the next level of Girl Scouting. Many of our troops will earn their special bridging patches in the process as they complete various activities. Girl Scouting is open to all girls aged 5 (must be in kindergarten) through 18, who are willing to live by the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Girls may join at any level and no previous Scouting experience is required.

March 12th will be the 101st birthday for Girl Scouting in the United States. Many of our Copper Corners Girl Scouts will be celebrating with birthday parties and special service projects. Girls may participate in special roles at their place of worship on Girl Scout Sunday or Girl Scout Sabbath.

Copper Corners service unit serves girls in the residence areas for Birkes, Fiest and Lowery Elementary schools, Aragon and Labay Middle Schools and the corresponding high schools. Home schooled and private school students are always welcome. It is never too late to become a Girl Scout.

Hosting a foreign exchange student is easier than you may think

During the 2012-2013 school year, students from all across the world will have the opportunity to travel to Houston and surrounding communities to spend the entire school year in the United States, learning and working with American Families. In order for the students to come to the U.S. they must have proper host families lined up. Now is a crucial time of year for the Ayusa program as local staff coordinators to find local host families for the upcoming school year. The Ayusa program is celebrating its 30th year this year and is

There are not many strict requirements that need to be met to host a student. The most important thing is that those who host students are doing so for the right reason; providing a loving experience and an exposure to American culture. There are a few basic requirements, of course. Anyone older than 25 and can provide food and shelter for a student fulfills the requirements of being a host family. There is a background check, reference check and an interview. Background checks have to be done on everyone over 18 living in the home. The host families have to be interested in it for the right reasons, the cultural exchange of learning from them and them learning from us. It’s the language, the cooking, the music, the food. The host family has to be genuinely interested. Once the host families and students are matched, Ayusa stays involved by monthly contacts with the families, students and quarterly contacts with the schools. Ayusa coordinators also handle the host family orientations and the student orientations. Group activities, such as community service and seeing things with the group of exchange students is also arrange throughout their academic year. With the current school year quickly coming to an end Ayusa’s local staff is busy looking for families for students for the 2012-2013 school year. Many families are needed and with the schools having deadlines and limits for foreign exchange students the earlier the better. It also gives the families and students time to get to know each other via skype, facebook, etc. while waiting for their year abroad to start. Cornerstone Umc “CHRIST IN THE PASSOVER”

What do the Jewish Passover and Jesus’ Last Supper have in common? A representative of Jews for Jesus will answer that question in a presentation called “Christ in the Passover” on Holy (Maundy) Thursday, March 28th at 7 PM at Cornerstone United Methodist Church. Using a visual display of traditional Passover accouterments, the “Christ in the Passover” presentation enhances the Christian’s understanding and appreciation of the Jewish background of the Christian Communion. Ancient and modern Jewish customs are discussed and described with an emphasis on the aspect of redemption, which Christ accomplished at Calvary. A table is set with the traditional Jewish Passover items, including representative foods, which are explained, but not eaten. The ceremonial seder plate, the three-compartment pouch in which the matzo (unleavened bread) is kept, as well as the traditional cup of Elijah are presented and new insights to their christological significance are provided. Jews for Jesus has presented this demonstration in over five thousand churches. It was originally written in 1956 by Moishe Rosen, the founder and former executive director of Jews for Jesus. The presentation was abstracted from the writings of the late Rabbi Leopold Cohn, who came to faith in Jesus in 1894 and died in 1936. Dr. Rosen contends that some of the most important elements of Christian doctrine, such as the Trinity, the principle of substitutionary atonement and salvation through a personal relationship with the Messiah, are implied in the Seder (Passover feast) as observed by Orthodox Jews even today. According to Dr. Rosen, “The Christ in the Passover presentation is one way Jews for Jesus can help churches appreciate the Jewish roots of the Christian faith.” Cornerstone United Methodist Church is located at 18081 West Road (across from the CFISD Berry Center). • PALM SUNDAY SERVICES (March 24 ): At the 10:45 AM service, the children will lead a processional in worship waving palm branches as we remember and celebrate Jesus entry into Jerusalem. Also at the 8:30 and 10:45 AM services, the Chancel Choir accompanied by an orchestra will be performing their Easter Cantata. Northwest Flyers Youth Track Club orientation/Registration

The Northwest Flyers Track Club will host an orientation/registration session for all middle and high school athletes and their parents interested in joining for the 2013 season. The event will be held on Friday, April 12th, from 7:00 – 8:30 PM at Cypress Creek High School, 9815 Grant Rd., Houston. The Northwest Flyers is a youth (ages 6 -18) track organization, affiliated with USA Track & Field. The club provides a full program of “track” events such as sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance and relays and “field” events such as long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, discus, shot put and javelin. It is an excellent “offseason” program for young athletes who currently compete on their middle school or high school track teams. Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer (FFPS) is open for boys and girls ages 4 to 18 for the Spring Season. Games start on April 13, 2013. FFPS is a non-profit youth soccer program dedicated to providing a positive youth sports experience for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, FFPS has grown to 22 leagues and 15,000 players throughout the Greater Houston area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including one practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal playing time and play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive coaching and more. No tryouts are required. Online Registration schedule and fees (sign up early and save): Thru March 8th: $99 March 9th to March 18th: $104 March 19th and After: $109 Go to www.FFPS.org to sign up. Registration fee includes a full uniform (shirt, shorts and socks), trophy, trained positive coaches, nice fields and background checks on all volunteers. All major credit cards are accepted. Coaches will call players to schedule practice by April 10th. Practice times and location will be determined by the coach and team. The schedule includes eight games, with all games played locally on Saturdays from April 13th - June 1st. FFPS has three locations in the Cy - Fair Area.
